Space, somebody once said, is the final frontier. But, as far as your negotiation is concerned, it

Space, somebody once said, is the final frontier. But, as far as your negotiation is concerned, it's the first frontier. The ways that you use the space around you when you negotiate are as individual, distinctive and particular as you are. We all, for example, have what is known as a 'personal space'. This space is roughly circular in shape with us occupying an off-centre position - with more personal space to our front than to our rear. The size of this circle depends upon our personality, age, gender and status. It is also influenced by the situation that we're in - such as whether we like or dislike the people around us. The way that we use this and other parts of the space around us sends signals to the people around us. For example, if you wish to control a meeting then the best place to sit is at the head of the table or, if there isn't a table, in the chair which is largest or occupies a key position in the room. The distances that we keep or allow between us and other people are eloquent about how we feel about them. For example, most of the informal conversations that you'll have — like those that might occur on the fringes of our negotiations — take place with a distance of half a metre to 174 metres between you and the person you're talking to. In the more formal part of your negotiation this separation distance can rise to as high as 3'h metres. As a consequence you'll have to speak louder, supplement your words with gestures or facial expressions and signal which person you're talking (or listening) to by the direction of your gaze. In negotiations that involve large teams, separation distances can rise to as high as 71/2 metres. At this sort of distance you'll have to use emphasized vocal cues, posture and gestures to replace the eye contact and facial expression that you used when you were closer to each other. Status can also influence this separation distance with high status individuals needing — or being given — more and better protected space. But status isn't the only factor that influences the way that you use your negotiating space. You'll sit or stand closer to the people that you like, are similar to or need approval from and you'll sit or stand further away from those that you dislike or think of as being somehow 'different'. All of these factors influence the ways in which you'll use and arrange the spaces of your negotiation.

Many, but not all, of your negotiations will be conducted while you are seated. When you sit you adopt a posture that's halfway between the extremes of lying down and standing up. When you sit down with someone, you signal your social availability to them. Sitting with someone means you are accessible to them; you can see, touch and hear each other. This sitting together can be informal, as when you talk to your friends or when you eat breakfast together with your family, or formal, as when you sit with your boss to be told whether or not you've got a pay rise this year. What you intend to do when you sit together and the way that you intend to do it influence the seating arrangement that you choose. For example, the corner seating arrangement is the most informal. In this, you're close to the other person, you can see and touch them as well as being able to see their papers or notes. While sitting side by side is less informal, it is usually seen as a seating arrangement that is cooperative. It is easy, for example, to compare or exchange written material in this position. But when you're in competition with or unsure about someone, then you almost always choose to sit opposite to them. You do this so that you can see and watch what they're doing. Many of your formal negotiations will adopt this 'sitting opposite' seating arrangement. The opposing teams will face each other across a rectangular table with the team leaders seated opposite to each other. But in really big negotiations — such as those between several opposing groups — the people present are often limited to the representatives of those groups and are seated in a large circle or at a circular table. What happens at these negotiations is often controlled by a chairperson — who has to act impartially — and speakers may even have to get up to go to a stand or podium to make their case.

But you don't have to use rectangular tables, nor do you have to abide by the 'sitting opposite' arrangement. For example, you and the other side can sit at a round table or even at no table at all, and you don't have to sit in opposition to each other — you can mix the two teams up by sitting them adjacent to each other. Whatever you decide to do about the seating arrangements for your negotiation it is worth making sure that:

the seats that you use are comfortable

the people on your team that you need to check or consult with are seated near you

the person from the other side with whom you have the most conflict or difficulty is seated near to or opposite to you — so that you can make eye contact with them you can make eye contact with the key people in both your team and theirs.

In 2009, who would you like to see in CF?

If the Yankees plug in Brett Gardner, the OF would shape up to be Gardner in center, Damon in left and Nady in right. That's a fairly solid defensive configuration. Of course, this arrangement is contingent upon the notion that Melky Cabrera will not be a starter next year and will likely make the team, but as a defensive replacement, off the bench (our 4th outfielder).

The second configuration could skimp on the defense, allowing for more offense. The Yankees could plug Damon into center and then figure things out from there. They could sign Manny Ramirez to a 3 or 4-year deal and let him roam RF (move Nady to LF), or they could try Matsui in the OF and hope that he doesn't die. This would open up the DH hole, allowing them to add another bopper.

Why go the offensive route when the pitching is more important, you ask? Well, say the Yanks fail to lure CC Sabathia or sign AJ Burnett (Burnett is still a huge drop off from CC). They would have to "settle" for Derek Lowe and maybe Jon Garland (unless they try to trade). I figure they would probably add Joba into the rotation as well, since the 4 starters (Wang, Lowe, Pettitte, Garland) can be counted on to eat innings, however, the rotation itself isn't as strong as it could've been with a Sabathia or a Burnett. You're essentially adding offense to offset the output expected from your pitchers. It's a strong rotation but it's not lights out, therefore more hitting would make some sense and it would allow the Yankees to take Joba out of games earlier (with a lead) and limiting his workload (it'd help Jon Garland too).

What do you think? Is the first option best or is the second option best? Or, do we simply have to wait and see because the pitching will decide how the story is told?

.

Something new this time. xP
.

It's a piano arrangement of Okami songs, from the Okami Piano Arrangement album (at least, I think it's an album?). It's the ending credits song from Okami (I'll post the YouTube video one day, no spoilers!), but the whole Okami soundtrack is really nice! The songs are all so soothing and peaceful, and sounds "otherworldly". =D
.

And this song is really nice, I wanna play it. T_T
.

Note: I don't own this piece. The video is copyrighted by the guy at YouTube, and the piano arrangement is copyrighted by its original arranger!

.

Enjoy!

When I lived in Pune, India I once had an opportunity to take some yoga classes at the Iyengar Institute there. I remember that unlike yoga classes I had been to in the West, these were based on elaborate props to help students into difficult positions: headstands, arm balances, etc. There was one teacher who addressed this in one of his talks. “People think using props is cheating,” he said, “But it’s essential. If you want your body to learn the proper way to do a pose, you have to put it into that position first, before it is strong enough to get there on its own. That way it remembers. The body, the muscles, the joints, they all remember.

I’ve been taking a lot more time with demo recordings recently. It’s hard sometimes to spend time on a demo that you know you might discard somewhere down the road, but I find that recording has an important impact on my songwriting. It’s like a type of muscle memory: when I arrange my songs fully and flesh out their instrumentation, they seem more alive, more real to me; and as a result, when it comes time to play them live, my ears and heart “remember” all the sounds that went into the recording and feel them on some level as I play. Without putting my songs into the harness of a recording, they remain more limp and static, like bodies that cannot sense themselves and so remain stuck in their habitual patterns of tension. I used to think that music production was cheating, and of course there are a lot of people out there who use production to cover up their lack of musicianship. But production can also be like a flashlight, shining into corners of a song that were dark and hidden, but nevertheless there all along.

There’s a spiritual lesson in all this too, I think, and that is that creativity always has to confront a part of the mind that is constantly accusing it of “cheating.” One of my teachers calls this “learning to give ourselves pats on the back,” because we are taught from a young age that we shouldn’t praise ourselves if we don’t want to become egotistical. And it’s true, of course, that there are many things we do that we shouldn’t give ourselves credit for. But when we do something worthwhile – some virtuous action – it’s essential to give ourselves credit, because it is precisely that affirmation that is the cause for that virtuous action re-arising in us more easily. If we make it feel good to do good, in other words, we will do more good.

The same principle applies in art. Whenever you can make something more beautiful, make it more beautiful. If a melody sounds wrong and you don’t know why, add a string arrangement. There will always be a part of your mind that tells you you are trying to polish a turd, but I think it’s important not to give in. If the goal of art is beauty, then all beauty is acceptable (none of it is “cheating”) and all beauty will lead to more beauty, whether that means a new melody or a new song or painting or whatever.

I marvel at how bad of an education I got in how to live a creative life. It’s no one’s fault, I know, but it never fails to amaze me how much easier it is for me to crack the whip on myself than to let my talents follow their free and easy wandering towards what is beautiful.

Only so many hours a day you can work without feeling like a piece of sun-dried cabbage by the end of it. But that's the life of a New Yorker, I suppose - it's all about hard work here. So what happens after spending years on the go? Finito?

Even after hours of being busy with all sorts of arrangements, deadlines and submissions, as well as sessions, meetings and hang-outs (alter ego problems!!) I still feel as though I haven't made the most of the available 24 hours per any given day... "If only I had done more yesterday, I'd have been able to do even more today...." That's my motto... but not a healthy one, I agree!

Having finished drafting the radio show for my program on Tuesday morning, I am officially done for the night... But oh wait, what about typing out the manuscript I drafted last night? Still haven't done that... But when???

Not complaining, God forbid, never! What's better than being hectically busy around the clock and barely finding the time to take a quick breather? Well, maybe a little catch-up with a friend online - the one across the ocean... Oh yes, that is always special, I agree. Yet, work is always there staring me in the eye whenever I turn around to cast a quick glance at what's cooking on the desk!

May it always be that way... busy, busy bee!

This is what the top of my wardrobe looked like before I had to pack some figures away for transport. (Some being 4, Corti, Chie, Lucy and Haruhi)

This was after I moved alot of my mini figs to make room for the new gals, Bianca and Serio, Shion is down next to my laptop, along with the Strarf the Devil Type Busou Shinki.(who I will get round to posting about soon... I promise... I got 3 more on saturday aswell lol.... so cute....)

Just a pic I took while fiddling with camera settings, still haven't got it fully worked out... I know... it's sad... and I should be ashamed lol. Isn't Koko lovely though?!!? She's one of the figures I saw on one of Danny-san's event photoshoots, and I knew I wanted her, that pose, the face, the hair! I loved her...(just realised I do have another shy-looking figure other than Serio lol.... I'll change what I wrote...) I might do a little review thing of Koko, when I get her returned to me at uni, (am only allowed to bring limited figures to begin with... 4...:sob: but I'm bringing my Nendo Miku, Figma Haruhi and all 4 Busou Shinki's too lol, and my Lucky Star Puchi Nendo's. You can fit alot in the dead space in figure boxes. :icchan grin:

Executive board of International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed the third review of The Gambia

Executive board of International Monetary Fund (IMF) has completed the third review of The Gambia's performance under a program supported by a three-year Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility (PRGF) arrangement.

Completion of the review allows for disbursement of SDR 2 million (about US$3.1 million), which would bring total disbursements under the arrangement to SDR 8 million (about US$12.4 million) to The Gambia.

PRGF is IMF's concessional facility for low-income countries. PRGF loans carry an annual interest rate of 0.5 percent and are repayable over 10 years with a 5½-year grace period on principal payments.

IMF's executive board also approved the authorities' request for waivers of nonobservance of four structural performance criteria concerning submission of two special audit reports, making operational of a credit reference bureau, and establishment of a central register of fiscal expenditure commitments.

Arrangement with The Gambia was approved on February 21, 2007 for an amount of SDR 14 million (about US$21.7 million).

Following the Executive Board's discussion, Mr Takatoshi Kato, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair, said: "The Gambian authorities are to be commended for maintaining macroeconomic stability in the context of robust growth and moderate inflation. The PRGF-supported economic program has been implemented satisfactorily, despite the recent increases in world food and fuel prices.

"Over the medium term, The Gambia will face the challenge of maintaining strong growth while further reducing poverty and attaining the Millennium Development Goals. To this end, the authorities are committed to promoting fiscal discipline, private sector growth, and investment in infrastructure, education, and health. The authorities are advised to consider steps to improve The Gambia's international competitiveness through measures to improve the business climate, such as alleviating the burden of central and local government taxation on businesses."

He concluded by commending The Gambia saying it has made strong and successful efforts to improve revenues, in particular through improvements in tax administration.

Mr Kato said Gambian authorities recognise need to focus on broadening tax base and making it more buoyant, including by reducing scope of import duty exemptions. "Making further progress in strengthening public financial management will also help to ensure that budget formulation is realistic and in line with priorities in the country's Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP)," he said.

So,

time for the first show, eh?
A man called me up the other day asking if i was the one who could arrange some gigs at KSET. Fuck yeah, not a month has passed since i created a myspace profile, not to mention that i should be the one doing the calling, begging and eventually ass-kissing. The name (of the band) is Gretta, a rock band who had released a debut album a few months ago, and now they want to promote it.
This came in really great, because promotions usually don't cost anything, so basically all i have to do is set the date and arrange the posters. At least that's what i thought. I listened to couple of their songs on myspace, they sounded alright, so i went to their rehersal to hear some more.
Basically, a mainstream rock group, kind of like distorted U2 - The Police combination, of which i'm not a big fan, but it sure beats some demo punks or death metallers. No offense :)
These guys play good, they stay in rythm, and in tune, which figures, since they do have an album released by a major Croatian label. More importat, i think they're capable of putting together a good show. Of course, it being an album promotion doesn't help moneywise - i don't expect to have a sellout show, if there would be any selling, because of the promotion, and the need to get as many people as you can, even if that means free entrance.
And that would be the first thing to discuss with the band - the entrance. The band thought it should be free, however, with a free entrance you have no way of tracking the number of guests in the club. So basically i had to put some price on the tickets, and the minimum i could go for was 15/25kn (3/5$) the first price being for presales, and the second on the day of the show. Now, they wanted about 300 invitations, which means no tickets would be sold, because the club's capacity is round 300 people. I gave them two hundred, explaining it had to be enough for all the families and close friends and people who helped to put the album together.

They weren't happy.

And to tell you the truth, neither was i, because it was half way between nothing. Then we agreed to a solution which seemed to satisfy us all: basically they can make a list of 250 people who will be coming at the promotion. This covers absolutely eveyone who they want to invite, plus, the list is open to changes till the very start of the show, leaving them with 250 people who will almost certainly come. It also leaves me 50 tickets to sell.

Now, i know, it is an album promotion, it should be free, but here's what i think: what if you like the band and you want to go to the promotion, and you can't because you're not on their invites list? And again, leaving a totally free entrance is not an option. I think i did the right thing.

The second issue was the date. They wanted mid-october and i couldn't get anything before 10th of november. I realise it's four weeks later, but the club was fully booked, and they wouldn't go and change dates for someone who is arranging gigs for the first time. The problem in the 10th of nov. is that it's monday. Ok, monday is a really bad day to have a concert, but all the fridays and saturdays are booked throughout the year, and there are other weekly programs which i can't (don't have enoguh power to) postpone or cancel.
After an half an hour argument, a few calls, and a beer, i managed to get them nov 11th, tuesday.
And there it is! My first gig is set, now for the physical part...

Yeah, one more thing - i'm meeting their manager this week. Hope it goes as smooth as it should.
I will post more details on the show, links, pictures and stuff in a few days. Until then,

Peace, niko
