Like Flamini, I liked Hleb, and a lot and in a way we miss him, but the man lacks in respect and as if leaving the club was not enough, now he's trying to persuade Cesc in joining Barcelona. He told El Mundo Deportivo:

We get on very well on and off the pitch. For me he is like a brother. We call each other a lot to talk about things. He tells me he misses me at Arsenal and, without wanting to detract from anyone, I would love it if he came to Barca to be a part of all this. I don't stop insisting that he should return to Barca and he doesn't stop insisting that he is very happy at Arsenal and with Arsene Wenger.

I will keep boring him until he changes his mind. If in the end he listens to me, I think it would be great for Barcelona.

Pretty annoying comments if you ask me. Maybe the way he wanted and obtained his so-called "dream move" to Barcelona was expected, but I would never expect him to accept being used by Barcelona to get to Cesc.

5 points dropped in the past two games. Not a good sign. I'm not losing hope, and I think we can rise above it, but it certainly doesn't feel good. And we're not playing that poorly, either... things just don't seem to be going our way.

I'm not so sure the klugy 4-5-1 or 4-4-1-1 they were running yesterday was the best approach. Far be it for me to question Le Boss, but I don't think we're cut out for it, even with all the talent we have. I also think Nasri should have started the match. I honestly think that one change could have had massive impact on the match. But we started Song, who is not a bad choice when you need a defensive midfielder. At 83' Song lost the ball outside the area and Leadbitter took a tap and a whack at it... Almunia could do nothing. It rattle the crossbar and bounced in. I took foul language to a whole other level and dimension for the next ten minutes or so. But then, we won a corner from the right. Robin van Persie placed it perfectly and of all people, the 5'8" Cesc Fabregas rises above the mob and heads it home. Beautiful shot, Cesc! And it saved us one point where it looked we would get none.

I'm not sure what to make of Sunderland after this. They laid back and clogged the box pretty hard for a home team. I can't iamgine what they'll try at the Grove when they visit.

Moving from one legend to another, Nicklas Bendtner, he wore yellow boots so people could see his runs better, he's shagging Steve Bruce's daughter, he doesn't even need friends at Arsenal to have a good time and what's best of all, he believes he'll be better than Thierry Henry, he's just too cool. He even had time to recognise the players around him, and the brilliant future we have;

''It was strange [on Tuesday] for me because I was the fourth oldest player and I've never tried that before. It was good, I don’t really mind, I've played with those players before and I know them very well so it was OK for me. We played really well and it was good. We all get taught the same style of football from a young age at Arsenal and I think that's great. It indeed a treat but it's also a treat for us to watch, Tuesday was an outstanding evening for everyone who made it to the Emirates, to see the future stars playing the same as the current crop, it's great to know that I could not watch a game for 5 years and go back to it and see the same wonderful stuff being played at fortress Emirates. Arsene Wenger had some wise words too, his view of Vela, why he didn't buy anyone, the team news for Hull and how he'll use the Carling Cup players;

"I'm pleased [with Vela] but I'm not surprised because I knew what he could do, Eduardo is coming back and Bendtner will be top class plus we have van Persie and Adebayor, but it's just an answer for the people who asked why we didn't buy. There was a period when we had to look for players abroad because we couldn't find the talent in England, but if you look at the players we've produced like Sidwell and Bentley, quantity wise, we're the most complete we've ever been.''

Plus there's been a lot more, James Harper, Jermain Pennant and Matthew Upson (okay, we brought them at 16, but Wenger spoted the talent), Justin Hoyte, Stuart Taylor, amongst other Championship players like Julian Gray and David Noble. More on team news now, but he didn't mention Samir Nasri.

''Song will have a fitness test today, Silvestre is available as is Clichy, he had a training session yesterday and in the next 48 hours, he'll be a lot better. We didn't lose anyone from last week so everyone will be fit. The Carling Cup players will be used over the coming months in the Premier League but against Hull, I'm not sure yet. We have a priority to win games but also a priorty to give players games, we're top now and we want to stay there longer than last season.''

So he didn't mention Nasri, he just said everyone from last week will be fit, which means van Persie's got through another week unscathed, well done Robin. Silvestre looking like he'll play some part to get his debut out of the way, if of course we're winning, as Wrighty7 rightly said, ''we can't underestimate Hull because it will bite us in the Arse'', as we've found out before. So Appiah is qualified in the way the boss likes them, unfancied and broken. You know I jest, but stranger things have happened.

I think he will persevere with the other well known crock, Diaby and use out of position centre back Song as cover, but it's almost irrelevant as we know it's him or no one, I like Appiah but as someone said the other day, if West Ham want him, why would we? they have a fantastic crock record themselves with Dyer, Freddie, Parker and Bowyer, but they are fed up with us as we have more injured players, and it makes them angry as we are winning the only thing they can.

OK, joking aside I can't wait to get back to football, all this England shit is only good if Theo is playing, I think he will come back with king size gonads and Cesc will come back hating the Spanish team, so we did okay for once in international week.

Gran fin de semana de fútbol el que hemos tenido. Empezó el viernes con una vibrante final de la Supercopa de Europa, en la que los rusos  del Zenit (rivales del Real Madrid en la Champions) superaron a un Manchester United que sin Ronaldo, no tuvo ni profundidad por bandas, ni juego en el medio, ni pegada arriba.

Interesantes los rusos, que de la mano del portugués Danny, fichaje estrella del Zenit esta temporada, machacaron al Manchester. El ex del Dinamo de Moscú, que ha costado 30 millones de euros, demostró su enorme talento, dominó el centro del campo y fue el principal creador de las contras. Ha venido para sustituir a Arshavin, y lo puede hacer a la perfección. El segundo gol así lo atestigua. El portugués con sangre venezolana controló el balón en el medio del campo, y partiendo desde la izquierda llegó al área donde mareó a Ferdinand y se la cruzó a Van der Sar. Si al final Arshavin no sale del Zenit, van a formar una pareja letal.

Me alegré mucho por Pogrebnyak, porque se lo merecía. Es un delantero sobresaliente que se perdió la final de la pasada UEFA por sanción y la Eurocopa por una inoportuna lesión, pero por fin ha logrado resarcirse, aunque sea en parte. Marcó el primer gol e hizo un excelente partido.

El Manchester me decepcionó. Le faltó contundencia arriba, algo que probablemente solucionen si al final firman a Berbatov, pero sobre todo, le faltó presencia en la medular, porque Scholes es un excelente llegador, y Anderson un mediapunta con mucha clase, pero se notaron muchísmo las ausencias de Carrick y Hargreaves. El 2-1 fue obra de Vidic y el United sacó la casta de campeón en el tramo final del encuentro, pero no fue suficiente porque sólo el 'apache' Tévez llevó peligro a la portería de Malafeev.

Además ha empezado el Calcio con sorpresas y tropiezos de los grandes. El Milan de Ronaldinho y Shevchenko cayó en casa ante el recién ascendido Bolonia. Los rossoneros son un cementerio de elefantes, con una plantilla cuya media de edad sobrepasa ampliamente los 30 años. Con Kaka' lesionado, Pirlo se encuentra muy sólo en la creación y Flamini deberá adaptarse a una nueva liga y a un técnico como Ancelotti. Ronaldinho tuvo un debut aceptable, acostado (no literalmente) en la banda izquierda, se dedicó a poner centros peligrosos e incluso dio el pase de gol a Ambrosini, pero aún le falta mucho para coger la forma, y dudo que pueda volver a ser el de los mejores años del Barcelona.

Otro que tropezó fue el nuevo Inter de Mourinho, que empató ante la Sampdoria del ex-gordo Cassano en Génova. La apuesta de poner a Cambiasso de central no dio resultado, y a Figo, que fue la sorpresa en el once titular, se le vio falto de ritmo durante todo el encuentro. El que si brilló fue Ibrahimovic, el sueco marcó el gol a pase de Mancini, pero estuvo muy desasistido en el ataque. Aun así el Inter asusta, con la mentalidad ganadora de Mourinho y una plantilla muy amplia, son candidatos a todo.

El partido estrella del Calcio fue el que enfrentó a Juventus y Fiorentina. Los turineses, sólidos y conjuntados se adelantaron con un gol de Nedved y todo parecía ponerse de cara para ellos cuando el árbitro dejaba con diez hombres a la Fiorentina al expulsar al ex mallorquinista Felipe Melo a 7' minutos para el final. Pero el conjunto viola, que no podía contar con Mutu, se lanzó al ataque a la desesperada y consiguió su objetivo cuando Gilardino introdujo en la red un balón peinado por Pazzini. Era el minuto 89 y el electrónico reflejaba el 1-1 final.

Lo más destacable de la Premier League, fue el partido entre el Tottenham de Juande y el Chelsea de Scolari. Un encuentro lleno de tensión, donde la calidad se vio a cuentagotas. Empezaron dominando los blues, y se adelantaron en el minuto 28 con gol de Belletti, pero los Spurs se rehicieron y lograron empatar antes del descanso cuando Darren Bent aprovechó una falta de entendimiento entre Lampard y Carvalho para poner el empate en el marcador. En la segunda mitad, no hubo oportunidades claras, dominó el centrocampismo y el marcador no se volvió a mover.

En el Liverpool-Aston Villa se lesionó Fernando Torres y los de Benítez acusaron su baja y sólo pudieron empatar a cero ante los hombres de Martin O'Neill. Sin Torres, el Liverpool pierde mucha pegada, y a pesar de la llegada de Robbie Keane, parece que la responsabilidad goleadora esta temporada, volverá a recaer en el 'niño'.

Volvió Cesc y lo notó el Arsenal. Los gunners arrollaron al Newcastle con dos goles de Van Persie y uno de Denilson, que crece notablemente cuando juega al lado del catalán. Con esta goleada, los londinenses han logrado aplacar las críticas por su juego ramplón de las dos primeras jornadas. Hay que destacar que en las urracas, volvió Joey Barton, que acaba de salir de prisión tras cumplir 75 días de condena por agresión.

Y por si esto fuese poco, también ha empezado la Liga con el Numancia haciendo historia. Los sorianos, con el presupuesto más bajo de toda la primera división vencieron al todopoderoso Barcelona gracias al gol de Mario Martínez, el jugador que menos cobra de toda la Primera  División y también el primer soriano que anota un gol con la camiseta numantina en la máxima categoría del fútbol español. Los de Guardiola se atascaron en ataque, y aunque tuvieron varias oportunidades claras no supieron definir. Volvieron a aparecer fantasmas de los últimos meses de Rijkaard. Henry deambulaba por el campo y aunque sé que soy pesado, sigo creyendo que los blaugranas van a echar mucho de menos a Deco.

En el Real Madrid, la vida sigue igual, que diría Julio Iglesias. Llevaba 17 años sin ganar en Riazor y esta temporada no ha sido una excepción. Un Deportivo muy serio doblegó a los blancos con goles de Mista (sí, Mista, yo tampoco me lo creía) y Lopo. En ataque los de Schuster salieron con todo menos el descartado Robinho. Robben, Higuaín, Raúl y Van Nistelrooy, pero eso les dejó sin equilibrio en el centro del campo. Guti vagaba por La Coruña mientras que Diarra no daba abasto para contener los ataques del Dépor. ¿Y De la Red?, en el banco. El botón que sirve como muestra para corroborar que el Madrid sigue cometiendo los mismos errores, es que los dos goles del Dépor vinieron en sendos saques de esquina, de nuevo balón aéreo, peligro para los blancos, y Casillas, extrañamente fallón, se olvidó de salir y casi se le cae el larguero en la cabeza. Volvió a cumplir el de siempre, Van Nistelrooy, que convirtió un rechace cerca del área en el único gol de los blancos. Pocos refuerzos y mucho trabajo por hacer.

Donde están en una nube es en el Calderón. Exhibición en Champions y primer liderato en la Liga. El Atlético de Madrid le endosó un 4-0 al Málaga con mucha autoridad. Agüero fue decisivo otra vez y Forlán volvió a demostrar que lleva el gol en la sangre. Además Heitinga y Ujfalusi han mejorado mucho la defensa con respecto al año anterior. Buenas vibraciones, pero tratándose del Atleti, habrá que ver cuanto les dura la alegría.

El Valencia de Emery también dejó muy buenas sensaciones. Goleó a un flojo Mallorca y demostró que la debacle de la vuelta de la Supercopa sólo ha sido un espejismo. Al igual que en la ida de la Supercopa, de nuevo Villa, Mata y Vicente fueron los goleadores.

Por último, dos notas de color para el blog. Dos clásicos, dos partidos grandes. El Celtic-Rangers y el Oporto-Benfica. El derbi del Old Firm se lo llevó el Rangers por 2-4 y para colmo, el autor de dos de los goles de los protestantes, fueron obra de Kenny Miller, ex-jugador del Celtic. De los españoles, sólo jugó Nacho Novo, que entró en el campo en el minuto 78' y no pudo ayudar al Rangers. Su compañero de equipo Aarón y el jugador del Celtic y ex-barcelonista Marc Crosas no intervinieron en el partido.

Y el partido grande del fútbol portugués tuvo mucha presencia española. Quique estaba en el banquillo del Benfica, que aguantó el chaparrón del Oporto, y logró un valioso empate a uno. Se adelantaron los locales con un gol de Lucho González de penalti y el paraguayo Cardozo empató para los lisboetas. En la recta final del partido, el defensa benfiquista Katsouranis fue expulsado pero los de Quique aguantaron el resultado y se llevaron un valioso punto. Dos apuntes, Di María, el jugador de moda, no brilló como se esperaba, buen partido de reyes y el 'payaso' Aimar se lesionó en el minuto 50 (otra vez). Como también salió lesionado el lateral Leo, en Lisboa comienzan a cuestionar los métodos del preparador español Pako Ayestarán.

Una última cosa, el Ajax de Van Basten y Oleguer perdió con el modesto Willem II de Tilburg... vaya debut tuvieron los hombrecillos.

I have finally decided to start my blogging on Arsenal and my expectations for the season... So i will recap the transfers, and the last 2 games.

Today I have to admit that once again I am worried about my team... but this I am used to so I am hoping that the tables turn 180 and we see better football from "the" north Londoners. This transfer window so far we have lost the little depth that existed at Arsenal with the departures of Flamini, Hleb, Gilberto, Hoyte and the loan of Traore and Barazite . These were key players in the arsenal ranks(with the exception of Hoyte and Barazite) and sadly the incoming freshmen are not up to the level of the graduating class. The new boys were Nasri, Ramsey, Bischoff and Silvestre (I question Arsene's judgemnt here). So the midfield seems really depleted, and with Toure, Diaby, Rosicky and Fabregas sidelined the seasons opening games were sure to be tough. So said so done.

Now the game against West Brom saw Nasri bag his first goal for the Gunners, Arsenal's top scorer for last season seemed to be below par on the day. Fortunately they held on to the 1-0 lead and took the three points. The positives from the game would be that the team were able to hold out for the win, Denilson looked fit to play in Fab4's spot. However, in the game against Fulham the team looked substandard. Lack-luster would be an understatement as far as I am concerned. Adebayor might have renewed his contract but he needs to renew his goal tally too... I think he depends on feeds from Fabregas to get into the game. Turnovers galore and poor targeting riddled Arsenal's game. Hopefully with the return of Cesc in midweek we will see a better team performance.

My personal opinion is that Arsenal needs a defensive midfielder. I heard speculation that Tore will be converted to that place in the meantime and either Silvestre, D'jourou or Song will play as centre back... hmmm not too sure of Toure in the defensive midfielder's role but one thing i know is that he would do the best he can. And in the preseason  warm ups we saw Wilshire and Vela having some impact so it's a wonder when we will see them on the pitch.

Finally as i said before i usually have these doubts about Arsenal in the earlies but Wenger always seems to calm my nerves.. I know he will ready the Arsenal for the rest of the season.

‘The Cincinnatti Kid’ (El rey del juego, 1965) relata la historia de ‘Kid’, un jugador de poca monta que se gana la vida apagando faroles en el sesudo arte del póker. ‘Kid’ – interpretado por Steve McQueen-, posee un sexto sentido para anticiparse a la jugada, y ansía tener su oportunidad para destronar al implacable rey del póker, Lancey Howard – encarnado por el genial secundario Edward G. Robinson-. Al final, ‘Kid’ y Lancey se enfrentan en una maratoniana e intensa partida clandestina, donde el corazón del espectador no gana para sobresaltos cada vez que ‘Kid’ o Howard dan la vuelta a sus cartas. El desenlace de la partida entre partidas llega cuando Howard realiza una apuesta muy elevada, haciendo creer a todos los presentes que se está largando un buen farol. ‘Kid’ pica el anzuelo, cree tener amarrado a Howard y echa el resto. Cuando Lancey destapa sus cartas, ‘Kid’ recibe una dura lección. La que dicta que, en la vida, uno siempre tiene que estar preparado para pasar de verdugo a víctima. De halcón a paloma. Algo así como la fábula moral del cazador cazado. En los últimos tiempos, Ramón Calderón vive a caballo entre la piel de Teo (aquel protagonista de cuentos infantiles de los ochenta) y la piel de ‘Cincinnatti Kid’ (el personaje que se gana la vida ejerciendo de tahúr). Primero faroleó anunciando que tenía un trío de ases con Kaká, Cesc y Robben, y cuando las cartas se descubrieron, Don Ramón no pasaba de una pareja de doses. Ahora, después de un año de operación de acoso y derribo, donde el farol se llamaba Cristiano Ronaldo, resulta que Calderón vuelve a ver cómo le apagan el farol antes de tiempo. CR7 concede una entrevista al diario portugués Publico en la que anuncia que no dejará el Manchester United. Otra calderonada más.

Vaya usted a saber si influenciado por Teo, el hecho es que Calderón imita la omnipresencia y versatilidad del añorado ídolo de los más pequeños. Eran de obligada referencia aquellos tebeos donde el protagonista tenía la capacidad para estar en muchos y diferentes destinos. Así hubo un “Teo en la escuela”, seguido del “Teo en la granja”, del “Teo en el hospital”, del “Teo en la oficina” o incluso de “Teo en el museo”. En todos, amén del componente educativo y social, el bueno de Teo se recorría el mundo para deleite de los niños de anteriores generaciones. El presidente del Real Madrid, imbuido en el espíritu del inefable Teo, no ser pierde una. No se pierde un sarao, una fiesta, un convite, un bautizo, una comunión o cualquier cosa que sea objeto de una cámara de televisión donde arrojarse de cabeza. No hay tebeos que valgan, pero no por falta de material. Un día desayunamos con Calderón en el Festival de Cannes, otro con Calderón en la oficina, al siguiente la temática es Calderón en Roland Garros, al otro es Calderón en el Gran Premio de Barcelona, más tarde Calderón en Wimbledon, ayer Calderón en Hamburgo y cualquier día, Calderón en La Moncloa. De hecho, la capacidad viajera y la omnipresencia del palentino sólo encuentran parangón en su sorprendente capacidad para acumular farol tras farol.

No es que Ramón Calderón tenga querencia por el naipe – al menos, no es una afición conocida ni notoria del presidente-, pero el hecho es que, en el mundo del póker, Don Ramón podría ser un pseudo-imitador del personaje de ‘Cincinatti Kid’. El personaje encarnado por Steve McQueen era amigo de farolear con las peores parejas. Tenía especial habilidad por jugarse el resto con dos cincos, con dos seises o dos sietes. Incluso, cuando hilaba fino, ‘Kid’ tenía la costumbre de achantar a sus rivales de mesa echando el resto sin tener ni siquiera una triste pareja de cuatros. Ramón Calderón alardeó de un trío de ases (Kaká, Cesc y Robben) para llegar a la presidencia, y nadie fue capaz de apagar aquel farol. Cuando llegó la hora de enseñar sus cartas, Don Ramón sólo tenía doble pareja de cuatros y doses (Saviola, Metzelder, Dudek y Drenthe). Y como no hay dos sin tres, Ramón volvió a la carga con el farol el pasado verano. Aireó que tenía atado a Kaká y el resto de jugadores de la mesa tragó el anzuelo. Pasado el verano, Mijatovic destapó las cartas del presidente y no dudó en señalar ‘jamás hemos hecho una oferta por Kaká’. Con dos Ligas bajo el brazo, la tercera jugada de póker de Ramón ‘Cincinnatti Kid’ Calderón se llamaba Cristiano Ronaldo. Bueno, pues agua.

El problema para el presidente del Real Madrid es que, a día de hoy, sus compañeros de viaje ya le han tomado la matrícula. Hay quien le baila el agua y filtra contratos verbales, acuerdos con agentes, pactos de silencios, verborreas de verano. También los hay que desconfían, que piensan que la policía no es tonta y que la operación CR7 sólo es una nueva cortina de humo, otro globo sonda. Sea como fuere, la jugada de Calderón no es nueva. Sotto voce se rumia el plan “B” de siempre (Van der Vaart, un gran jugador sin demasiado ruido mediático), se afila un plan “C” (a vueltas con David Villa y su querencia al blanco) y se sigue intoxicando con el plan “A” (ese cromo de verano que se llama Cristiano Ronaldo y cuyo fichaje parece un culebrón venezolano inacabable, tipo “Cristal” o “La Dama de Rosa”). Nada nuevo bajo el sol. Ni en el tapete de esa mesa de póker en la que Calderón se siente como en casa.

En la ficción, en el camino de ‘Cincinnatti Kid’ se cruzó Lancey Howard para masticarlo a fuego lento y dejarle más tieso que la mojama. ‘Kid’ se confió, no le vio venir y pasó de verdugo a víctima en una abrir y cerrar de ojos. Howard, viejo zorro, no iba de farol. Ahora, Calderón se encuentra en la encrucijada. CR7 ha hecho público que Don Ramón ha vuelto a hacer el paripé con dos cuatros. Le han apagado su enésimo farol y ya no hay quien crea en el poder negociador del presidente blanco. Sea como fuere, al presidente del Real Madrid no le caerá la gota gorda por la frente como a los dos protagonistas de la película “El Rey del juego”. El motivo es sencillo. Howard y ‘Kid’ se jugaban su prestigio y su dinero. Ramón Calderón tira con pólvora ajena. Maneja el dinero de los socios – incluso el de la gran mayoría que no le votó-, pero no perderá ni un solo euro de su bolsillo. Por eso Calderón nunca pierde. Juega con el dinero y con el prestigio del Real Madrid, no con el suyo. Y no hay nada más fácil que apostar con el dinero de otros. ¿Ochenta millones de euros? Rojo, impar y pasa. Porque, a falta de echar un buen vistazo debajo de las alfombras, en el Real Madrid, siempre toca rojo, impar y pasa. Y si pasa, se le saluda. Dice un buen amigo mío que algunos dirigentes de clubes de fútbol tienen la cara de cemento armado. Algunos, visto lo visto, la tienen de acero inoxidable y no se les cae de vergüenza. After Denilson's impressive displays in pre-season, echoing Flamini's attempts to force his way back into the first-team fold last summer, Wenger may well be excused for asking himself whether or not he needs to sign another central midfielder.

Although Wenger has recently admitted that he is interested in a couple of names, but will keep us guessing as to whom, I wonder whether the strong showing of Denilson has perhaps left him undecided as to what to do. He said at the beginning of the summer that he was looking to bring in an experienced player that has knowledge of the Premier League and that seems to match up to the current rumours regarding Xabi Alonso teaming up with Cesc in our midfield. However, with Liverpool wanting around £16-18m for the Spaniard, it might be a possibility that Wenger will stick with what he's got, knowing what he's like with bringing youngsters through.

Indeed, after the Real Madrid game, Wenger was quoted as saying that if he couldn't find an experienced top class midfielder by August 31, he'd be more than happy to rely on the youngsters he already has.

Alonso would be a class signing and one that would be welcomed by myself and many other Arsenal fans. However, would it not perhaps send the wrong message to the likes of Denilson, Diaby and even Ramsey that Wenger's still not confident enough to put them in midfield alongside Cesc, who himself was placed in the centre of midfield at a very young age?

Having watched how the team has gelled already over the summer and been impressed by the performances of Denilson, Vela, Nasri, Bendtner and Wilshere, I do wonder whether we will see any other new faces in the red and white before the start of the season.

As much as I like seeing new players come into the club, if Wenger is confident in players like Denilson or Diaby, then who are we to argue? Don't get me wrong though. I'd love for a big player to join us this summer and because Wenger keeps his cards close to his chest, it may be that he's got something up his sleeve that will surprise us.

Whatever happens - I can't wait for the season to begin.

This season's Arsenal team is getting younger if its even possible. Well it is, considering that Cesc, who seems to be around for quite some time already but is still only 21, is already the man with the 2nd most number of appearances in the team behind Kolo Toure.

Target

The target this year will be to win a trophy. Win a trophy, Cesc will be happy to stay and we can build a solid team around him. The Premier League will be a tough one with Man Utd managed to hang on to Ronaldo, Chelski just keep getting more players in and the mugsmashers (Ha, free treat to anyone who knows why pool fans are called mugsmashers without checking the internet.) brought in Keano. We will be able to sustain a challenge if we keep ourselves relatively injury free, but with Van Persie and Rosicky in the team, that is at least 30 games lost between them. Arsenal might not last the pace, and with Wenger seldom going for any massive rotations in his 1st eleven, the league may be still out of the reach this year. A more reasonable trophy will be to aim for Champions League and FA cup, especially in the FA cup, where Wenger likes to play some fresher legs. As for the Carling Cup, maybe not, since the carling cup squad may probably get so young that Jack Wilshere and Jay Simpson may be the senior players of the team, a bit too inexperienced.

Out: Gilberto, Aleksander Hleb, Mathieu Flamini, Jens Lehmann

As usual, out goes some experienced players, and in comes younger replacements. Vela and Nasri are definitely 2 exciting prospects, Ramsey pops out of nowhere while Wenger describes unknown Bischoff as a gamble. Flamini is a big boot to fill. I am not sure whether Ramsey is the one though. Out of the current squad, I will prefer putting Song (1st choice) or Diaby (2nd) alongside Cesc, although I do prefer Wenger getting a more experienced central midfielder in, Gareth Barry anyone? Hleb is skillful, no doubt. But seriously, he should have contributed much more to Arsenal than his 10 goals in 3 seasons. I am sure Nasri is more than capable to fill his boots. And there is Walcott too, so I am not too worried about the loss of Hleb.

Players to watch/get rid?

Carlos Vela plays with a similar style to our dear dudu (hope he can come back by Christmas). A natural goal scorer, hopefully he can adapt to the rough and tough of English football and make an instant impact. I foresee him being more of a substitute for Van Persie in games at least for the first half of the year.

Jack Wilshere. Only 16, he seems almost able to take on the physical challenges of the premier league already. The mere mention of his name will excite any Arsenal fan. He is the next great hope out of the academy. And hopefully, he can do what Robert Pires has contributed to Arsenal in the past.

Emmanuel Eboue. Get rid of him. Or at least just be a deputy for Sagna. I never liked him. A diver, actor and total disgrace to the football club. It is a great mystery why Wenger is still keeping him, and playing him on the right wing as first choice at times.

Denilson. Ermm.. unable to usurp Cesc's place, and I will rather play Rosicky or Nasri in the center if Cesc is unavailable, Denilson does not fit in. His qualities are not good enough yet, but at least youth is on his side.

Bendtner, A poorer version of Adebayor. We don't need 2 strikers with poor touches and need a zillion tries a la Andy Cole before scoring. Ade and Bendtner cannot play together, but the good thing about them is their physical size. We need some striker who can head, and Bendtner is still ahead of Ade on this count though.

Manuel Almunia. Does not have the aura a goalkeeper should have, even with his bleached hair. A good goalkeeper must always exude an aura that gives confidence in his defence or scare the shit out of the opposition. Good goalkeepers like Cech, Reina, Buffon and van der Sar all exhibit this quality. Almunia.. nah.. How I wished we managed to sign Gomes instead of Spurs and offload Almunia to Blackburn instead. Gomes is a pretty decent goalkeeper I think, and most importantly he has the aura. I hope Wenger signs some good keeper with the aura.

Apparently, it's been reported that Fabregas has spoken to Spanish newspaper Marca about rumours of a move to Real Madrid. I don't believe it, and you shouldn't either.

The paper has nothing better to write about, and when Madrid can't get their number 1 target, they decide to pick on the second best player in the Premiership. BTW: I'm by no means indicating that Ronaldo is better than Fabregas, I'm only basing that on the PFA Player of the Year award!!!

On a side note, I never thought I'd say this, but you have to give credit to Tottenham for the sales of players. They sold Carrick for £18m, they want £32m for Berbatov, and Keane is close to a £20m deal to sign Liverpool!!! How on earth do they get these sort of figures for such mediocre players??

Siempre vehemente, el entrenador alemán, según una información aparecida en la web de El Mundo, es rotundo: "Yo también haría lo que está haciendo Ferguson, le comprendo perfectamente. Mens jeg var væk er der sket et par ting.

TH14 blev kåret til den bedste kanon nogensinde foran Dennis. Fair nok, det var tæt løb, men Dennis er hollænder så han burde have vundet.

Gilberto er blevet solgt til Panathinaikos. Jeg er sikker på, at han kunne have været nyttig for os næste sæson, men 31 år gammel og med massere af unge (og gode) drenge klar i kulissen, så er det en god beslutning fra Wenger. Gilberto bliver den bedst betalte spiller i den græske liga og vi får helt sikkert en yngre model til at danne par med the Cesc på den centrale midtbane. Jeg glæder mig enormt til at finde ud af hvem...

Hleb er røget til Barcelona. Det irriterer mig. Jævnfør tidligere blogs om min holdning til Hleb. Han var en af mine favoritter.

I lørdags spillede vi sæsonens første og den årlige tilbagevendende venskabskamp mod Barnet. Jeg så den desværre ikke. Vi vandt 2-1 og Wenger roste Aaron Ramsey. Jeg er virkelig spændt på at se ham, når sæsonen starter.

Following the departure of Flamini to Milan, could Abou Diaby now become the perfect partner for Cesc in the center of the Arsenal midfield? Diaby was signed from Auxerre in 2006 as a central midfield player but has been manly used as cover on the wings for the injured Tomas Rosicky. I have said for a long time that Diaby is wasted on the wings and we are never going to see the best of him until he is given a run of games in the middle of the park. I'm a huge fan of Diaby and I feel that next season he can step up and become a key player for Arsenal "IF" he is played in his best position. At 6ft 2 Diaby was said to be the new Vieira, but due to injury's and playing out of position fans have not seen the talent that made Wenger fight off the interest of Chelsea and sign the French prospect. But now is the time for Diaby to step out of the shadows and show the fans what he can do. Next to Cesc this can become our perfect partnership, Both very talented. Young and full or running. Cesc maybe has more of an eye to pick out a pass but Diaby is maybe a better runner with the ball and can also shoot from long range. Speaking to alot of Arsenal fans on the forum and many feel that Diaby is not a defensive player and cant play in the same team as Cesc? My answer to that is how do you know it wont work until you try it, I cant remember a single game were Diaby and Cesc have started in the middle? For me it can work well,Playing Diaby in the middle will also add some height that has been lacking. A huge season for Diaby and I have full confidence that he can deliver.

1.we make a lot of money of Ade and spend it on a striker who wishes to play like henry before being paid like henry.

2.Ronaldo is off to madrid and manu languishes mid-table due to lack of ideas(too optimistic...i know)

3.Walcott finally saves wengers a** and turns into a real striker while the whole world believes he is a great winger.

4.Bendtner finally gets some ice packs to sleep with and has no Ade to fight over who misses the best chances.

Aparte, Hleb dejó ver que no mantiene una buena relacion con su actual entrenador, Arsene Wenger, diciendo que nunca estaría de acuerdo con él.
Según palabras textuales de Hleb : ''"mi forma de ver el fútbol es muy distinta de la de Wenger. Para mí no es fácil marcharme".

También le dedica unas palabras a su compañero Cesc : "Cesc es uno de los motivos por los que no he alcanzado mi máximo nivel en el club. Es egoísta porque siempre que tiene posibilidad de disparar lo hace, sin pensar que a lo mejor hay otro jugadores mejor posicionados. Es una cosa que yo no hago".

Si las palabras son las correctas y no han sido sacadas de contexto estamos ante lo que podríamos calificar como ''salida de tono'', y espero una rectificación en sus palabras, ya que se equivoca totalmente.

Personalmente, no entiendo a qué vienen estas declaraciones y tampoco entiendo porque los jugadores a la hora de querer cambiar de club se dedican a desprestigiar al suyo actual, al que, seguramente le debe el que otro equipo quiera ficharle.

Still no one can slag off the chosen one and stay, so well done Hleb, you will get your wish and Cesc won't complain, so it leaves the doors open to sign a big player for big money, or does it?

The Hleb story, which was an exclusive here on the Grove last week has proved once again that player power works, don't forget Wenger signed him, he wasn't from the ranks and at over £11 million, he didn't come cheap.

Wenger needs to sign a replacement that won't take years to bed in, my money is on Barry and shift the team around, he may even go for a winger like SWP or he may get Veloso and put Nasri in, whatever he does he needs to do it now, before pre season.

Arshavin, I could go either way on, at least Wenger can't say he doesn't have the money now.

Ramsey is saying he hopes to start against West Brom, so maybe he will feature more in the Hleb rather than the Flamster role, whatever he does, he needs to be positive and move fast, maybe YaYa, who knows, you got it ...Arsene does.

Someone needs to explain the finances to the boss though, the stadium cost £450 million, not a billion.

Cesc Fabregas has been voted the O2/Arsenal Player of the Season. And rightly so. Cesc's performance this past season has been nothing short of astounding. His work ethic and touch on the ball are unparalleled and his presence alone is a boost to the team morale. There's some debate about whether he is still too young to take the armband, but I think he's ready. No disrespect intended to our current or other potential captains, and there are several. Congratulations, Cesc. This awards is well-deserved and I for one am looking forward to this season and what it will bring.

Iker  Casillas: Tras la Eurocopa ha demostrado por qué es el mejor portero del mundo, por delante del gran Bufón. Como dijo Luís Aragonés es “un diez como capitán, como persona” etc. Para la historia quedará esa tanda de penaltis ante Italia que le encumbró como mejor portero de la Eurocopa.

Pepe Reina: El suplente perfecto, jugó ante Grecia y se le vio con ganas y rápido, como es normal en él. Fuera del campo ha sido básico para la unión del grupo.

Andrés Palop: Ha sido el único que no disputado ningún encuentro del torneo, pero hizo lo que Luís quería, aportar en los entrenamientos y aceptar su rol. Bonito gesto en la celebración al enfundarse la camiseta de Arconada.

Sergio Ramos: Empezó flojo. Perdiendo balones en zonas del campo peligrosas, subiendo en ocasiones equivocadas y metiéndose a veces hacia el centro del campo sin sentido ninguno. Pero tras la “bronca” con Luís, creció, siendo la final su mejor encuentro, mostrando su garra y entrega habitual sumada a sus ya famosos amagues en ataque.

Álvaro Arbeloa: Jugó ante Grecia y no fue su mejor partido, aunque no se complicó la vida en los despejes. Es un jugador tan polivalente y tan joven que será básico en el futuro de la selección.

Carles Puyol: Volvió. ¡Y de que forma! Rápido, contundente, bien por arriba y totalmente involucrado con el equipo. Junto con Marchena ha sido la mejor pareja de centrales del torneo. Infundió respeto desde el túnel de vestuarios.

Raúl Albiol: En el partido contra Suecia tuvo que entrar en la primera parte por lesión de Puyol. Y aunque empezó nervioso según avanzó el partido se vio la “madera” de gran central que tiene. Contra Grecia falló en el gol no siguiendo a su marca. No tiene miedo en sacar el balón jugado, es rápido, coloca bien el cuerpo y además por arriba es seguro.

Carlos Marchena: Venia con la etiqueta del punto flojo de la Selección, pero ha bordado la Euro. Como de costumbre fuerte en las faltas necesarias, sin evadir la pelea con Luca Toni, Ibrahimovich o Ballack. Es el jugador con carácter de la Selección, insustituible tanto por ello como por su gran momento de forma durante el torneo. Muy seguro.

Juanito: Estuvo aceptable ante Grecia mostrando sus galones y su veteranía en un equipo en el que todos eran jugadores jóvenes.

Joan Capdevilla: No siguió con su olfato goleador, pero con un trabajo muy poco valorado, dentro de un nivel muy aceptable, hay que saber observar como de dos despejes (o pases) suyos se consiguieron el primero gol ante Rusia en la primera fase, o el segundo de Villa en el descuento ante Suecia.

Fernando Navarro: De los mejores en el partido contra Grecia. No falló a la confianza de Luís, y pese a la competencia del lateral izquierdo es muy posible que empiece a ser fijo en las convocatorias futuras.

Marcos Senna: El jugador del torneo (con permiso de Xavi). Impresionante es la palabra que resume lo que ha sido Senna en esta Eurocopa. Colocación, perfecta. Robo de balón, perfecto. Distribución de juego, perfecto. Subida de balón, perfecto. Disparo, perfecto.  Fue el pulmón del equipo, en ningún partido se le vio desfallecer llegando a tirar un penalti contra Italia estando medio lesionado. Cierto es que era la posición mas dudosa al comenzar el torneo, pero ha acabado siendo la más segura.

Xabi Alonso: Por fin Xabi pudo disfrutar de unas muy buenas actuaciones con la roja. Saliendo desde el banquillo aportó siempre lo que necesitaba el partido. Marcando el ritmo del juego en los minutos mas complicados de los encuentros. En el partido de los “suplentes” fue elegido mejor jugador del mismo, dejando una exhibición en tiros lejanos, pases y movimientos con el balón.

Rubén De la Red: Pasó el examen con notaza. Golazo y minutazos de gran juego en el único partido que jugó. Pinta muy bien para el futuro.

Xavi Hernández: Como la UEFA dijo, el mejor jugador del torneo. Para la historia del fútbol quedará el manejo del balón y del partido de Xavi. Buscando siempre la responsabilidad de subir el balón, buscando el pase inteligente y no cansándose de tocar y tocar la pelota hasta dar con el momento perfecto para matar el partido. Además aportó el primer e importante gol de la Semifinal. Tuvo momentos en donde bordó este juego. El cerebro del equipo.

Andrés Iniesta: Al principio del torneo quizás notó los problemas derivados de una larga temporada y de la gastroenteritis que sufrió antes del torneo. Se le notaba flojo. Pero Luís siguió dándole confianza y minutos para que cogiese la forma, realizando una semifinal y una final maravillosa. Es un jugador diferente con pase de gol (como el que le da a Xavi en semifinales) y encarando y regateando con muchísima calidad a los defensas.

Santi Cazorla: Entró como última pieza en la convocatoria y ha sido básico. Saliendo siempre desde el banquillo sus cambios de ritmo y la buena compenetración con jugadores como Villa o Xavi, con los que nunca antes había jugado, ha sido espectacular. Se movió entre líneas como quiso, y sorprendía por sus cambios de banda. Tiene muchísima calidad en sus dos piernas.

David Silva: Se entregó durante todo el torneo. Quizás mejorable su aspecto defensivo para aprovechar mejor esos kilómetros que no para de correr. Su entrega y su clase (¡que clase!) fueron claves en el partido contra Italia. Increíblemente frágil tiene un desparpajo asombroso.

Cesc Fábregas: Su pase de gol a Guiza en semifinales es la imagen con más genialidad del torneo. Aunque le costó empezar siempre bien cuando salió, acabó cambiando el control de Xavi, por su verticalidad cuando la selección lo necesitó. Demostró sus ganas de ser importante en este equipo lanzando el penalti definitivo en cuartos. Fue el jugador número doce y por la lesión de Villa jugó la final como titular formando en una alineación histórica.

Sergio García: Jugó solo contra Grecia estando activo pero fallón. Quizás notó el jugar durante todo el partido en diferentes zonas del campo, estando un poco perdido, pero siempre mostrando sus ganas por aportar algo diferente.

Dani Güiza: El Pichichi de la liga demostró por que lo es. Compensa el no tener una gran velocidad con un uno contra uno contra el portero perfecto, además de rematar genial al primer toque y de cabeza. Se llevó dos goles preciosos y una actitud muy combativa y valorable cuando jugó.

David Villa: El Guaje fue la referencia de la Selección. Para enmarcar sus tres goles (y su dedicatoria a Torres) en el primer partido. De crack su gol en la definición ante los suecos. Encomiable su lucha contra Italia. Y genial al dejar la suerte de jugar la final a un compañero ante su lesión en semifinales. Máximo goleador de la Eurocopa (por primera vez para un español) pero no solo eso, si no una verdadera estrella.

Fernando Torres: La historia hizo justicia con él. O él hizo se hizo justicia, porque su gol en la final fue maravilloso, de los que solo el Niño sabe hacer. Peleando, ganando en velocidad y con un toque magistral para levantarla ante el portero. Villa aprovecho mucho de su grandioso trabajo en todos los partidos, peleando hasta el último momento y sin parar de buscar desmarques y jugadas de uno contra uno, que no todas le salieron pero que siempre aportaban al partido y cansaron a las defensas. Fernando es un delantero único una verdadera joya mundial para este equipo. Y además forma una pareja de ataque también única con el Guaje.

And after him, it will be Casillas - and he's only 27 and a goalie, so he will be around a long time. Oh, and he also just captained Spain to their first title in 44 years.
2. You can be a United legend. While you didn't come up the ranks at United like Scholes or Giggs, you came here at 18. That's almost the same thing. To be a true legend at the club, if you join them early and stay for a long time, you are a legend. It will not be the same if you join Real Madrid. Are Zidane or Figo or Roberto Carlos or any of the other galacticos a legend? Yes, you are younger than they were, but if you think you will play at Real for 10 years, you are crazy. You won't last long enough there. Why, you ask? Next point...

Once you are in the team, don't you think the next guy contesting election is going to want his own galactico - maybe Bojan Krkic or the next freakishly talented Brazilian? At United, you will always be on a pedestal, much as Giggs and Scholes still are. Real is notoriously unstable because of the shenanigans that go on around the elections (Barca too). That's why they keep changing coaches as well. Who is going to be your coach once Schuster doesn't win the Champions League next season?
4. You play on the best team in England and in Europe. It is a young team too. Other than Arsenal, there is no other young, world class team like it in the world. And Arsenal hasn't won squat in four years. This team is the best team in the best league in the world. So, you are the player of the year in the best team in the world (and United will prove that by winning the World Club Cup later this year - BTW, you won't play in that or the European Super Cup this year if you leave United) in the best league in the world - and a team that is poised to challenge (if not dominate) for a few years to come. And you want to trade that for a dream? Talk to Kobe for some pointers, son.
5. Let's talk about the platform a bit. First, the club. At United, Rooney and Tevez and the rest of the guys will do the tracking back that you don't always have to do. You take the penalties and free kicks. No egos from guys like Rooney or Tevez or Rio or whoever. You really think that happens at Real? From players like Raul and Guti and Ruud and Robben? Forget what they say now. Wait till you are there. Ruud is going to take penalty kicks (especially after your recent two high profile misses, it is not a foregone conclusion that you get to push him aside for those) and Wesley Sneijder is going to take a fair number of free kicks. Then, the same thing will happen to you that happened to Torres. Defenders will not let you beat them with your pace as they won't play up as much, won't give you as much space and the midfield will be more compact as well so it is going to be harder for you to do your usual damage. The leagues are just different. The slower pace of La Liga is going to be to your disadvantage. Also, at United, you interchange with total freedom. Rooney, Tevez and whoever is playing attacking mid or opposite wing (Giggs or Nani) move around freely and let you move around freely. You come inside, switch wings, go crossfield, drop back, whatever. At Real, you will play like you do at Portugal. Except Real have players with even more ego and reputation. You will play more on the wing and have to serve balls to Ruud and Raul. Your goals will drop and so will your reputation. Trust me - we got a precursor at Euro 2008.
6. The fans love you at United. Yes, they will love you at Real as long as you are doing well. Can you imagine white hankies waving at United? United fans embraced you after World Cup 2006 even though you were mischievous in your contribution to getting Rooney and England booted. The country even forgave you - somehow I don't see that happening with a Portugese man in Spain.
7. The blame will be on you if Real don't win the Champions League within the next two years.
8. Messi plays in La Liga. You don't want to play in the same league as him since he will now be the showpiece at Barca and will come out of it as the player of the year in La Liga. Stop with the "I am a competitor; that's a challenge I would relish" line. I am not saying he is better than you - just that he will come off better given his team situation relative to yours.
9. Quieroz is at United and will probably be the next coach of United.
10. Spain has just won Euro 2008. Casillas, Xavi, Cesc and Torres are going to be ahead of you in Spanish minds for a while - and God help you if they win the World Cup too. It's more likely they win than England.
11. You signed a contract. You are just one year in. I bet you United gives you more money, but at the level you are, does some more money mean more than winning and being the best?
12. Karma is a mother. Loyalty seems to be an ugly word and yes, United and Fergie have thrown players out (see Becks and Ruud) after they were loyal to him and the club. However, this is ridiculous. The man protected you. The club and the fans embraced you. And you repay them like this?
13. You are 23 years old. In two or three years you will enter your prime. Most United fans will not begrudge you your desire to move if you do so at that point. It would also be perfect reasoning as you can say it is contemporaneous with Fergie leaving. IF, that is, you decide it makes sense to move then. It makes no sense to do so now. Can you imagine how much of a bigger deal you would get if you solidified your United fan base and then moved after you had won a couple of World Player of the Year awards. It would be a much bigger move than doing so now.
14. You will be joining a league where the rest of the teams have no real stars. Even Barca would have lost Ronaldinho, Deco, Eto'o and Gio Dos Santos. Contrast that with all the good players coming to the Premier League at Spurs, Everton, Portsmouth, Liverpool and Arsenal.

To be fair, let's talk about some reasons to go:

The weather is better. Your girlfriend is Spanish. Playing for Los Blancos is a bit mythical. Fergie's going to quit soon. It's not going to be easy to top, let alone match, this season - on a personal and team level. The competition in England for the Premier League is going to be even more fierce. You will probably make more money from the image rights deal in Spain. You probably speak Spanish better than English. It's your dream. Your mama wants you to go there.

The only thing that I have left to say is - if it's your dream that's great. Who says you have to wake up today to realize it - "wait a couple of years and then figure out if you want to live the dream or simply dream the dream while living the life you already have" CH12, July 1, 2008...
