‘Relief workers say they are powerless to stop the attacks and say that if they do speak out,

'Relief workers say they are powerless to stop the attacks and say that if they do speak out, they fear that the Sudanese government will tell them to leave the country.

Humanitarian group Refugees International said in a report last year that rape was "an integral part of the pattern of violence that the government of Sudan is inflicting upon the targeted ethnic groups in Darfur."'

NICE.

"Some relief workers say that almost every woman living in aid camps has been raped or become a victim of gender-based violence. Many teenagers, while out running errands such as collecting firewood, are raped multiple times by militiamen, the workers say. Video Watch women face dangers in Darfur »

They say the situation has now become so bad that many women are now resigned to rape as a way of life and men are unwilling to accompany them because they fear that they will be killed if they try to defend them.

But despite the extent of the abuse, the Sudanese government insists there is no problem, adding to the difficulties faced by the victims, who are often ostracized by their communities or fall afoul of a legal system seen as favoring their attackers. iReport.com: Share your photos, videos of Darfur

"There is no rape in Darfur," said Mohammad Hassan Awad, a Humanitarian Aid Commissioner for West Darfur, who accuses foreign aid workers of persuading people in refugee camps to make false claims.

Although few aid workers dispute the extent of the attacks against women, they say survivors are unwilling to come forward. But those who do reveal shocking levels of abuse.

"She said they removed their scarves and used it to tie them up and were taking turns to rape them. One is 13 years old; the other one is 16 years," Ajayi Funmi of the UNAMID police, who is trying to educate women, said after talking to two girls.

Making matters worse, aid workers say scores of babies conceived through rape are being dumped by their mothers.

"Abandoned babies are reported, but because of the stigma attached to it, there is no detailed report, because the women don't come forward," said Dr Naqib Safi of the U.N. children's body UNICEF.

As many as 20 babies a month are being dumped in one camp of 22,000 people.

With U.N. officials calling for more female officers to better educate women against rape and women saying they won't feel safe until the under-equipped and undermanned United Nations force is strong enough to protect them, the situation shows little sign of improving."

Sonia

TV2 TTV kaldte de forfulgte for oprørere 22. december 2006 : http://danmark.wordpress.com/2006/12/22/det-ligner-en-fornaegtelse-efter-afskrivning-fra-regeringsrapport/

Problemerne i Dafur skyldes klimaet, hævdede FN : http://danmark.wordpress.com/2007/06/17/balladen-i-forbindelse-med-indvandringen-skyldes-klimaet-haevder-fn/

Random thoughts from my brain to yours this week . . . have at them.

"Jesus for President" is one of the coolest books. I am thankful for our study group. The discussion has been awesome. Quotes that got me thinking:

"It is hard to imagine a gospel that is more of an antitheses of Jesus' gospel and the Beatitudes than what we hear today in the church: "Blessed are the rich"; "Blessed are the troops"; "We will have no mercy on the evildoers."

So are we saying the United States of America is not a Christian nation? The United States is Christian inasmuch as it looks like Christ.p174

The more the early Christians reflected on the life and message of their rabbi-messiah, and the more they tried to live the way of the gospel, the harder they collided with the state and its hopes and dreams, militaries and markets. In fact, Christians in those first few hundred years were called atheists because they no longer believed in the Roman gospel; they no longer had any faith in the state as savior of the world. p141

[John] did not simply argue that various aspects of the market exploit this or that; rather he placed his concerns in light of a cosmological struggle between right and wrong…is is possible we can't see the destructiveness of our economy not because we don't know it's terrible but because deep down, we feel that it's necessary and that therefore it's hopeless to criticize it?p153

Restaurant chips and salsa are the bane of my diet, or should I say lack thereof? Following a close second are those chocolate covered coffee beans Sylvia brought to study group last Sunday. Ack! Although, I was able to beat my whole team in three games straight later that night at bowling league. Secret weapon? Hmmm.

There simply needs to be more time in a day so I can catch up on books. Of course, if I'd stop acquiring them, then I might actually do it in 24. Yeah, right.

Change is good. Change can hurt. Change is really the only constant in life. How's that for an oxymoron? Nothing like living in THAT tension.

Looking forward to the CSM mission trip to Philly. I've got a feeling this is will be life-changing service in less than a month for all of us. They always are, anyways.

How can people refuse aid to help all the suffering in Myanmar? How horrible to be thirsty and have children suffering like that. What makes people refuse aid? I don't get it. I just don't get it.

"Don't blame the dark for being dark. Blame the light for not shining on the dark."

"While the Church at large is great at telling people to avoid their gutters, I've found that this approach just doesn't work anymore. … Things have changed, and people don't do things just because they're told to do them or because those things are expected of them. So we as a Church have to change our approach and get dirty. Modern Christians must take risks and get out of their comfortable pews and classrooms and do something for God. If we don't, who will?"
From the Save Darfur website today: "Reports indicate that the government is detaining, torturing and killing Darfuris in and around Khartoum, and that janjaweed militias have commenced attacks in North Darfur.
Humans, Like Baboons, Stake Out Territories, Only We Call Them National Borders >>>
Moving

Humans, Like Baboons, Stake Out Territories, Only We Call Them National Borders >>>

Moving fences is always dangerous. The people next door seldom see the merit in it. When the fence defines a national border, the foolhardiness swells proportionally. Every time a frontier between hostile peoples has been redrawn for reasons of ethnic homogeneity, discord and misery have invariably followed. It happens less often these days -- although Kosovo, Baghdad, the Caucasus and Gaza demonstrate that the notion is still very much alive -- but as recently as fifteen years ago it was tearing whole nations apart, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union being prime examples.

Years may pass before one community can abide the proximity of the other. Although tidying up geopolitical fragments may warm the hearts of irredentists and justify the work of ethnographers and socio-linguists, it should never be considered as a solution to ethnic troubles unless people are positively at one another's throats. That's the point: in trouble spots all over the world, people who object to the way their neighbors speak or dress or pray are reaching for AK-47s and sallying forth to set history aright.

Every reasonable person wishes communities could get along, but there's no use putting on blinders. Many don't and can't be made to. Some mixed communities do set a fine example in neighborliness and enrich themselves culturally and intellectually in the process. But only a woolly-headed idealist would suggest that these examples are likely to influence people who hate the folk in the next valley as much as their grandfathers did. To suppose any community might reach perfect accord is absurd. But there is much to praise in the melting-pot model of Los Angeles and Sydney and in the amicable coexistence within Switzerland.

Against this must be set the examples, shading progressively from mildly disquieting to utterly abhorrent, of Canada, Belgium, Malaysia, Georgia, Kenya, Lebanon, Kosovo, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Sudan. Mutual dislike is far more common than mutual regard. Many times in modern history, mediators charged with sorting out intractable ethnic problems have "solved" them with pencil lines on the map. This has been done with great subtlety, as when the new border between Denmark and Germany picked its way around towns that voted in the 1920 plebiscite. It has also been done with singular lack of finesse, as in the Partition of India and termination of the Palestine mandate. And it has been done with unspeakable ruthlessness: Greece-Turkey 1922, Poland-Germany 1945, Cypress in the 1970s and Yugoslavia in the 1990s.

Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware was a voice crying in the wilderness when he proposed that Iraq, its three main communities having long passed the point of reconciliation, should undergo a managed partition. His views were dismissed out of hand by Condoleezza Rice and ignored by voters in the Democrat primaries. The Bush administration subscribes to the common but absurd notion that people should be made to get along together whether they want to or not. Yet they have no such position on Palestine. In Rwanda and Northern Ireland, partition is not practical, but Iraq is more like Yugoslavia. If President Obama or President Clinton chooses Senator Biden as Secretary of State, a whole new vista of possibilities will open in Iraq.

The idea of shifting borders is attractive only as a last resort. That moment surely ought not to be when people are already slaughtering one another, but when it is clear they intend to. Or perhaps when choices come down to drawing a new line or sending cascades of refugees over the old one. There are always pockets of frightened minorities left behind. A cynic will say a well-drawn line makes sure displaced persons have exactly the right number of empty homes and farms available on the other side. Many people, especially in pluralist America, say that this is the shameful way out. But the alternative is not very rational - that people should be forced to love their neighbors.

Clearly, some countries would be better off partitioned. Kosovo has this year set an example, for all that the idea is hated in Belgrade. Dafur should be allowed to split from its masters in Khartoum. Independent nationhood in these cases of irreconcilability should be not merely allowed, but encouraged, managed and enforced by the major powers. Sri Lanka is another prime argument for partition. Many Singhalese would rather have another century of civil war than allow such a split. They should reflect that many people in neighboring India felt much the same way not so long ago, and yet the old Raj is now three countries that nobody thinks of uniting. Nobody even says it is a pity they went their own way.

Some people object on practical rather than moral grounds. A period of anarchy is almost inevitable. People not personally involved are more often than not ignorant about the imperatives of ethnicity, nowhere more so than in melting-pot America. We may imagine a Chechen lives next door to an Ossetian and just across the way from a Russian, or that there are neighborhoods like those of the Italians, Irish and Jews of New York in its immigrant heyday. Of course, American cities are still divided into white, African-American and Hispanic areas, but even in Chicago, the Polish identity has largely faded.

If the U.S. and Europe had been far-sighted and willing in 1992, it would have been possible to draw a line that, without asking a single family to set a foot outside its front door, would have caused 300,000 Serbs to leave Croatia and 250,000 Croats to join it. The civil war need not have happened. But nationalists all over the would rather uproot a million households than surrender an inch of sacred fatherland. They should be made to if that's the only way to prevent bloodshed and brutality on a barbaric scale.

Ideally, no doubt, Albanians and Serbs would attend each others' weddings, play sports together and work side by side even though they read different newspapers, attend different places of worship and send their children to different schools. But when large numbers of Albanians earnestly believe the only good Serb is a dead one, and when enlightened, tolerant Serbs can say Albanians may be all very well in their way but I wouldn't like to live next to one, then the communities are better kept apart.

In Jerusalem before the mass immigrations that followed World War II, Jews and Muslims lived together relatively peacefully, if not amicably. Muslims and Christians cohabited in Beirut, Greeks and Turks in Nicosia, Germans and Poles in Danzig, Protestants and Catholics in Belfast. But once latent hatreds are fanned, passions are not doused for generations. The Tutsis and Hutus of Rwanda and Burundi are one case where the combatants genuinely are inextricably mingled and the problem therefore intractable. Civil wars in Korea in the 1950s and Cambodia from 1970 to 1993 were political in nature rather than ethnic.

National governments take good care to keep the world at large ignorant about their minorities. The Interior Ministry of the old Soviet Union was a hive of fanatical race-counters. To prove they weren't Russian chauvinists, they listed hundreds of "nationalities." (One had a single representative.) Yet in all the talk of Azerbaijanis, Uzbeks, Kyrghizstanis and Kazakhs, nowhere was there mention of Turks, which is what all these people are. Ankara may have patented the word Turkey but Turks were around before the Ottoman Empire.

To say that Western-dominated global media are not well-versed on ethnographic niceties is to put it mildly. They are appallingly ignorant at the level of editorial boards and TV news directors, even though the correspondent on the ground may understand these things very well indeed. Western professors who do understand usually don't write for the papers. So Moldavians are not widely known to be Romanians, "Thai Muslims" are not called Malays and Burma's Shans not Thais. Macedonians are supposed to be altogether different from Bulgarians.

Some say human beings are genetically preprogrammed, like other social mammals, to isolate and destroy the outsider. Certainly the history of 20th-century warfare does nothing to contradict that view. Civilization may be only the overcoming of ancestral brutishness. Technology certainly doesn't help; it just makes the killing more efficient. As the baboon troop marks its territory, so humans put up their fences. Our border patrols may be as natural as the baboon's. To be sure, this is a depressing thought. But until reason and compassion and good neighborliness are shown to be truer human attributes, perhaps it is best to help rival communities draw better boundaries.

In June and July 2007, Waging Peace researcher Anna Schmitt conducted a three week fact-finding miss

In June and July 2007, Waging Peace researcher Anna Schmitt conducted a three week fact-finding mission to Eastern Chad. The aim of the mission was to assess the humanitarian, human rights and security situation in the region and to collect testimonies from Darfuri refugees and Displaced Chadians.

While collecting testimonies from adults, women told Anna how their children had witnessed horrendous events when their villages were being attacked. This prompted Anna to talk to the children. She gave the children aged 6 to 18 paper and pencils and asked them what their dreams were for the future and what their strongest memory was.

When the children handed Anna their drawings, she was shocked to see the details of their memories of the attacks. While a handful of children had submitted drawings of daily life in the village or in the refugee camp, the majority of the drawings described the attacks on their village by Sudanese Government forces and their allied Janjaweed militia. Many of the drawings depict adult men being killed, women being shot, beaten and taken prisoner, babies being thrown on fires and Government of Sudan helicopters and planes bombing civilians.

The five hundred drawings collected by Waging Peace amount to a form of criminal evidence from silent witnesses. The killings, bombing and looting shown in the drawings directly contradict the Government of Sudan's version of events over the last four years of bloodshed. The pattern that emerges from these drawings corroborates what we know has been taking place in Darfur and shows a worryingly similar pattern of attacks developing in Eastern Chad.

The drawings will be exhibited in London and throughout the world to raise awareness about the crisis in Darfur. They will also form part of a submission of evidence to the International Criminal Court which is investigating crimes taking place in Darfur.

The villagers that are attacked are coloured in black, while the attackers have lighter (orange) skin – showing the ethnic character of the attacks (ie Arabs attacking ‘black Africans’ – in this case Massalit). In the bottom right of the drawing are two young men, attached by the neck, led away by a janjaweed fighter. These boys could be taken into slavery, or may become child soldiers.

This method is often used by the Janjaweed as a means of psychological torture, killing some of the men and not others, leaving the women to watch helplessly. One woman and one man are shown with tears falling down their cheeks. In the bottom left hand corner of the drawing, a Janjaweed is searching the men’s suitcases for belongings to loot. Once again, the skin colour of the victims and the attackers is different, reflecting the ethnic character of the attacks. The attackers are on worse-back and in machinegun-mounted pick up trucks, both widely used by the Janjaweed militia.

Says The Root magazine.

But the world always naps when catastrophes that aren't Western occur; no, I think the issue with Darfur is the famous names that have attached themselves to the project. It personally turned me off and I think this may also be the issue for others; tellingly, I would describe myself if asked as socially and politically conscious.

I know Clooney et al mean well but I'm not sure is we haven't tired of these celeb endorsements? Telling us how we should feel and who we should vote for. Trying to make us feel guilty for buying this or that ala Bono but not putting your money were your mouth is!

We've entered such media savvy times, that only the foolish and the voluntary naive do not question a celebrity's involvement with a cause not seeing it as a profile enhancing mission. This means, that people like me and I'm sure others pretty different;just turn away. We switch off. We guffaw. A cynically wry grimace appears across our face, as we read or see these pledges.

And unfortunately, if not typically it means Darfur in Africa takes the brunt of our flippant actions.

Not good.

In every political conflict, it is the innocent who suffer. As a world community, we failed to prote

In every political conflict, it is the innocent who suffer. As a world community, we failed to protect the people of Rwanda 14 years ago. Let us not be indifferent to the plight of the Sudanese people.

The president of Sudan has continually run murderous campaigns against the non-arab citizens of Sudan since his military coup in 1959—just 5 years after Sudan’s independence from English colonization. The Christian Africans of southern Sudan directly suffered for years from Bashir’s continuous onslaught. By the time a peace accord was reached, 3.5 million people had been murdered, millions more displaced and an untold number are still enslaved in northern Sudan. (see iabolish.org for information on southern Sudanese slaves and survivors) Violence against southern Sudan has again erupted and the delicate balance of the peace accord is in danger of disintegrating.

Because of the world’s indifference, there is a lack of coverage and discussion on the atrocities waged against the southern Sudanese and Darfurians. Let us not stand idly by as Sudanese citizens continue to suffer genocide and oppression.

After 5 years, violence against Darfur continues to escalate. More than 2,000 villages have been destroyed, 4 million people have been displaced, more than 400,000 have been murdered, tens of thousands have been tortured, people are malnourished, in need of medical and psychological care, deprived of their homes, farms, schools, and their very freedom. Many ngo’s and world governments have called for peace talks in Sudan. UNAMID has been formed as the hybrid AU and UN peacekeeping union in the Darfur region. With only 9,000 peacekeepers among millions of refugees, 24 helicopters and many more thousands of peacekeepers are needed.

Doctors Without Borders (Medicins Sans Frontieres) are one of the few humanitarian aid organizations still helping refugees on the Darfur/Chad border. On April 13th, 2008, Global Days for Darfur day, a walkathon and rally will take place in Montclair, NJ, from 2-4pm. We will walk in solidarity with the people of Darfur to raise funds for humanitarian relief—all donations will benefit Doctors Without Borders specifically for the refugees of Darfur. We will join professional and Olympic athletes, politicians, genocide survivors and Darfurians for action steps urging both the U.S. and China to press for the immediate deployment of the UN Peacekeeping Force. Please visit ecc4darfur.org for flyers, registration forms, and letters to sign and send to President Hu of China and President Bush of the U.S.

Please write and call your elected government officials and the U.N. to implement a cease-fire in Sudan, and media organizations for more coverage on Darfur and southern Sudan. We must continuously support the oppressed by raising our banners and our voices to shout ‘never again!’

Nyhedsbureauet Newspaq oplyser 5. april 19:04:

Siberien.

Was it really an April Fools trick or did the World Council of Churches (WCC) actually admit that Christians in Islamist Sudan endure some unpleasantness?

According to an April 1 report from the WCC news service, a WCC delegation recently visited Khartoum and was “shocked” to learn that a Christian cemetery in the nation’s capital is also being used as a used car lot.

Once the visiting ecumenists recover from their shock, maybe they’ll get around to realizing that Sudan is governed by theocratic Islamists who killed 2 million southern, mostly Christian Sudanese during the war that concluded in 2005.

The Religious Left has adopted the suffering in Darfur, a Sudanese province, as one of its pet issues. Their concern for Darfur is admirable. Hundreds of thousands of African Muslims have perished there, usually at the hands of Arab militias backed by the Islamist regime in Khartoum. Since Darfur is about Muslims killing other Muslims, it evidently is permissible for the Religious Left to take an active interest in it.

But the even more horrible and genocidal sufferings of the southern Sudan rarely provoked a peep from the Religious Left in the United States or elsewhere in the West, including the Geneva-based WCC. The war in southern Sudan was negotiated to a tenuous peace in 2005 with help from the Bush Administration, urged on by a coalition in the U.S. of evangelicals, Jews, black church leaders and other human rights activists who began organizing in the 1990’s. The world’s worst case of Islamist terror somehow never aroused enormous interest from the WCC, the National Council of Churches in the U.S. or other Religious Left groups supposedly so concerned about global justice.

But miracles do occur, and the WCC finally found its way to Khartoum, evidently having heard rumors of difficulties for Christians there. The WCC official report sagely observes: “It is hard for Christians to have their own place - even after they have died. The city's Christian cemetery, which has been turned into a sales park for second hand cars, illustrates well the challenges faced by the minority Christian community in the northern, predominantly Muslim part of the country.”

The only official cemetery for Christians in the city of 8 million is a 4 acre plot land given to Khartoum’s churches in 1975. But in 2007 a livestock market was set up on half of the acreage. "Can you imagine?" the Sudan Council of Churches chief Peter Tibi is quoted asking in the WCC report. "Animals were being sold at a venue which by nature is a holy ground."

After complaints from church leaders, the livestock were eventually cleared away, only to be replaced by exhibitions and testing of used cars. Thoughtfully, the visiting WCC delegation, led by outgoing WCC chief Samuel Kobia, raised the cemetery issue with Sudan’s Minister of Guidance and Endowment Hassan El Tighani. "I was shocked when I learnt that a livestock market was profaning a place that should be sacred", Kobia is quoted as telling the Sudanese official. Tighani assured the visiting prelates that he shared their pain and would appeal for a solution from the Islamist regime’s council of national ministers. A solution is on its way, no doubt.

The WCC news release briefly noted that the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement had concluded a “devastating 21-year civil war between north and south that left 2 million dead and 4 million displaced persons.” Despite its own ostensibly Christian affiliation, the WCC report declined to elaborate that the “civil war” was really about the Islamist Khartoum regime attempting to kill and suppress non-Muslims who did not care to live under Sharia. The WCC report did acknowledge that Sudan’s churches face “tremendous tasks and challenges"

Helpfully, the WCC report mentioned that 90 percent of Sudan’s Christians live in the south, including Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Orthodox, Pentecostals, and Evangelicals. Since the peace agreement, the southern Sudanese now have some autonomy, however precariously. But Christians in the north still must live directly under Khartoum’s Islamist rule. As the WCC noted, as “part of their condition of religious minority, Sudanese churches face sometimes insurmountable difficulties to obtain a piece of terrain in which to build facilities.” Sometimes the regime has seized their worship places, the WCC reported.

The kindly minister of the Islamist regime who met with the WCC delegation assured them that Christians were not singled out for problems. Indeed, it had taken even the minister about 10 years to get his own personal plot of land, he claimed, which is “just normal when it comes to land property in Sudan.” He even told the WCC that some mosques had been, in the words of the WCC report, “equally expropriated” by the government. But the minister is working vigorously to overcome these “cumbersome procedures.”

Sudan’s “ Special Commission for the Rights of Non-Muslims in the National Capital” also courteously met with the WCC delegation. As the WCC report sagely noted, “non-Muslims” is a “euphemism” for Christians. The commission is half staffed by Christians and half by Muslims; dealing with the “issues derived of the implementation of the Sharia, the Islamic religious law, in regard to Christians,” as the WCC described it. The commission’s Islamic head admitted that the livestock sales in the Christian cemetery were “very insulting.” And the commission’s Christian president assured the WCC that Muslims had “seriously protested” with the Christians. But why the used car lot still remains in the cemetery is still a “mystery,” the Christian president admitted.

Despite the WCC’s “shock,” will anyone else be surprised if the Christians of Khartoum just have to get used to the used car sales in their only cemetery? The WCC describes its delegation to Sudan as an “opportunity for the international ecumenical representatives to express solidarity with the Sudanese people and listen to the churches in the country.” The WCC team will “will learn about their concerns, hopes and needs.” Good for the WCC for finally getting around to Sudan, about 25 years too late, and 2 million dead later. Maybe the WCC team can inform the rest of the Religious Left that Khartoum’s theocratic savagery did not begin in Darfur but in southern Sudan, against primarily Christians, more than a quarter century ago.

As Sudan brazenly defies the world’s wishes, and the death toll closes upon half a million, the pity is that the people of Darfur can in fact be saved.
This is the type of military logic that got the United States in trouble in Iraq. Sure, the projection of United States air power could destroy the Sudanese military, and perhaps even lead to the collapse of the regime. But what would happen after that? Who and what would deal with the potential anarchy?

When, oh when, is the United States going to take its self righteousness about which moral problem, as they define it, they choose to "ameliorate" off the table. And which is the next "dictator" or country the US chooses to "stabilise".

The rest of the world generally cringes when the US "helps".

The world would be much better off if you take your money, your morals, your troops and your helpers home and stay there. Your own economy might be better too.

Ask Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Guatemala, Nicaraugua, Salvador, Panama, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Salvador, Iraq, etc. and a host of others who have refugees in the hundreds of thousands as a result of the internal effects after the US "helps" or invades the country concerned... and to put it politely, the opinions are less than satisfactory.

Try doing nothing for a change. It may help.
