Questa volta, però, non voglio sprecare la cartuccia. Nel tentativo di rendermi sempre più molesto, e, soprattutto, di dare un senso a questa mattinata uggiosa, ho cercato di costruirmi un account di posta elettronica su gmail che utilizzerò realmente. Un indirizzo che renda ogni tentativo di comunicarlo per telefono un'impresa di almeno mezz'ora.

Per fare ciò, avevo due alternative: la prima era scegliere una cosa tipo klsdfklpcpojn.9kadsfuuion@gmail.com.
Banale, e, soprattutto, troppo faticoso per me e troppo poco per il mio eventuale interlocutore. Il lavoro avrei dovuto farlo tutto io, dettando l'indirizzo lettera per lettera (mi verrebbe da dire "spellando" l'indirizzo, con un inglesismo brutale ma non insensato, dal punto di vista metaforico).

L'alternativa che mi è piaciuta di più, invece, è quella di creare un indirizzo complicato dal punto di vista cognitivo; un indirizzo che confonda la percezione del suddetto interlocutore, rendendo le sue aspettative pregresse sulla struttura stessa dell'indirizzo un grumo di inutilizzabile pattume.
Se proprio si vuole, un'operazione meritoria, dal momento che metterebbe all'improvviso di fronte a inattese e attraenti complicazioni intellettuali una persona, invece, ottusa sul compito banale, inane e del tutto non gratificante quale è quello di ottenere l'indirizzo e-mail di uno straccione come me; poi dite che non faccio nulla per il mio Paese.

Il mio nuovo indirizzo, che consegno anche alla vostra attenzione, è:

Ora mi metto accanto al telefono, e aspetto con ansia che qualcuno chiami per averlo;evento raro, ma non tanto raro da rendere del tutto insensata la mia aspettativa per una conversazione telefonica finalmente vivida e interessante.

Today I opened my inbox and found lots of "spam' in my spam folder. Just for curiocity, I opened one of them and I found this. See screenshot:(click to enlarge)

I was glad to see the red strip above text of mail. Look closely, its a warning from Gmail about this mail. I already knew this mail is popular phishing mail but for non-technical users, this is important. Good work Gmail!!

Sleeping soundly, aren't they?

UNFORTUNATELY HOWEVER, the first time I loaded iChat, I was bombarded with "Request Authorization" prompts that filled my screen....One hour and 500 "newly added" contacts later, I had managed to import MSN contacts into iChat (which doesn't usually support MSN formats). But there was still one more catch - some contacts couldn't be "authorized" so I've had to do it manually by adding them all into my Address Book and then deleting/adding them again. Absolute nightmare! And what makes all of this worse is that I am pedantic about giving all my contacts Nicknames so that I know who they are. So yeah, I've still got AGES until I'm done :(

EDIT: Ooooo... I've just noticed that when not logged into iChat, and logged into Gmail chat instead, all my MSN Messenger contacts appear in the Gmail window! Woot!

Esa cajita misteriosa en la esquina izquierda superior tiene a muchos desesperados. No se sabe que se traerá Google ahora. Muchos piensan que es un error de CSS ya que en IE6 no aparece y tampoco en Opera, pero suele salir en Firefox.

Yo no creo q sea un error. Quizás es algo que Google está planeando.

This procedure (except Step 2) must be done by everyone who wishes to start/involve in the conference/group chat.

1. Add "partychat#@gmail.com" as your buddy. # can be replaced by any no. from 0-9.
2. Login to G!Mail and start a chat with partychat#@gmail.com and type "/create roomname password" where roomname and optional password are some valid strings. ( This step by only one person )
3. In the same chatbox type "/join roomname password" to join the chat room. ( Each person should do this individually )
4. And Voila! your private chatroom is ready now.
5. And while each one is leaving the conversation be sure to type "/exit" or else the messages sent after you leave will be received as offline messages.

Though you can chat/converse with G!Talk, the commands MUST be typed ONLY in the G!Mail Chatbox.

Your @gmail.com mail will become @googlemail.

Here's what Google said about that:

"You may have noticed the Google Mail logo. We are changing our service's name in the UK. Starting October 19, 2005, all new users will have @googlemail.com addresses. Don't worry, though – all messages are being sent and delivered as before."

But why they are going to change it?
"Another company has claimed rights to the Gmail name. We have tried to resolve this dispute through negotiations, but our efforts have failed. "

When will you start offering @googlemail.com addresses? When will this change take place?
Starting October 19, 2005, the Gmail service will be renamed Google Mail in the UK. We will no longer issue new @gmail.com addresses. All new addresses will be @googlemail.com addresses.

What if I'm a UK user who already has a Gmail address? Will I also need to change that address?
No, this change doesn’t affect existing Gmail addresses. For now, our plan is only to issue @googlemail.com addresses to new users. Trust that we will do the best we can to offer all our users a reliable and consistent email experience.

So, someday you will start using googlemail instead of gmail. I think its too long so I don't know what they are going to do about it.

If you didn't notice there's a smart thing when you login into your google account. If your mail name has dots, then you can use it without using the dots. For example "Edward.K@googlemail.com" is the same "Edwardk@googlemail.com" ;)

Advantages

So, I was really cruising along last week, making tremendous progress on my ms.  And then...this week hit.  Ugh.  (Stupid work!)  Ugh.  Let me just say that it soldified in my mind that I definitely do not want to be in management any longer.  Not even one more day (though I have to, bleh).  I can't stand it!  And here's why:  it completely sapped all my creativity, stunted my writing progress, stressed me out, exhausted me.  And I am so-ho-ho resentful.  >:(

So, yesterday, I had the whole day to write.  In theory.  But what did I do?  I was at least able to critique a contest entry for a critique groupmate (ooh, it's reallllly good!), but I got no writing of my own done yesterday.  Why?  I was so zonked from this past week at work that I mostly slept yesterday, then I zoned out while playing solitaire on the computer and then while sewing a bag together out of an old kitchen curtain while I watched Spiderman 2.  I'm not crafty at all, and usually lack patience, so the fact that I spent like two hours on this sloppily stitched bag is a sure sign to me that I was decompressing from the workweek.  I also saw the fam for a bit and some fireworks from my house last night -- that was nice.  But it was mostly a rainy, lazy, uninspiring Fourth of July, and around 7 or 8 o'clock last night, I told my hubby, "I just want this day to be over with" so that I could sleep and wake up refreshed for the next day!

Soooo, today's the next day.  Is it any better for writing?  Well, after running some errands and doing some chores, I sat down with the laptop.  I opened my novel files.  Stared at my novel files.  Closed my novel files.  Checked email (Gmail).  Worked on stuff for my online writing workshops.  Checked email (Yahoo! this time).  Played around on youtube.  Found a great scene between Kate and Sawyer (I could just watch this over and over!).  Checked email (Gmail again).  Found a succinct romance writing website.  Opened my novel files.  Checked email (Gmail, shmemail, la di da).  Decided to write for my blog (Hi.) . . .

Sigh.

You know, the other part of this is that I have two other new story ideas creeping into my head.  Argh.  I just want to finish this one!  But the one idea is pretty darn good!  It's hard to pass that up.  Maybe I should just draft it and get it over with.  That's how I came to draft this paranormal ms.  At least I'd be writing again, even if it is something other than my paranormal.

کار تمومه، از این به بعد روی هر لینک میل تویی که کلیک کنید، صفحه فرستادن میل جیمیل باز میشه، نه برنامه های دیگه !

البته برای برگردوندن، به حال پیشفرض، میتونید به آدرس Tools>Option...>Applications برید و با سرچ عبارت Mail to، و با .انتخاب دیفالت، اون رو به حالت اولیش برگردونید

А проблем номер 2 е, че чата не ми зарежда (както виждате Google Talk си работи). Ако пък случайно зареди, вместо 20 имена ще пише 20 пъти undefined...А аз толкова да защитавам Firefox и да бързам да си го тегля още от 1 ден....

Internet Surfing has been revolutionized in this new era and a major contribution is from Google and it's myriad tools and services. The main reason for it's wide spread domain is because of the 'free' tag. Most of it's services like orkut, gmail, gearth basic and gtalk are available free of cost. So, were does google find its profits? It's advertising services is the answer to that. Google's powerful bots don't just crawl the net to get you the best search results, they can even crawl your mails to display relevant ads on your mail page.

So how private is your life?

Let me look at the google services I use. iGoogle, Gmail, Orkut, Gtalk, GReader, GEarth, Google Blog Search, Picasa, YouTube, GVideos, GGroups, GBooks, GAnalytics. That's a good long list, would have cost me a fortune if these weren't free.

My online life is so much dependent on Google. No doubt there will many others like me. Now lets look at how gOOgle's eyes follow you.

iGoogle - Customisable Search Page. It knows what you search for, what you want from the internet, and hence your fields of interests. I remember using Google search to know about my ailment during illness. So based on the search history, anyone who has access to it can know of my physical and even mental status. With such information, the lifestyle of any individual can be constructed.

Gmail and GTalk - Google's mail and chat services. Again your interests, contacts, friends are there in your mail box. I know of an incident when we gained access to our friends gmail account by keylogging. From his chat history, we gained so much of personal information, like his new crush, reasons for observable changes in his behavior etc.

Orkut - For Indians, social networking got a new meaning through orkut. Your profile represents your online self. And you tend to make your profile as unique as possible, ending up giving more of personal info, sometimes info that shouldn't be that public, like home address and personal phone number. You can closely follow a profile and get to know so much about the person in real life.

GEarth and WikiMap - You will be thrilled to find your place of residence on them and mark them as say "My House", but it also permits strangers to know of your physical location. Well, I guess that's dangerous.

Youtube and GVideos - These service changed the way we watch videos on the internet. Again it logs your video interests, letting people know more about you.

These are just instances, few examples I realised out of my Googling experiences. I myself know people who get information about others just based on online data, sometimes just from Orkut. The only hindrance they faced is the new privacy settings. Hence, it may be difficult for unauthorized people to cross your life, yet people with authority and permission to access Google data can construct the complete life of any individual simply from online data even without having any contact with the individual. He will never know his life is being watched upon.

It might be scary to realize that there could be someone watching every step of yours, knowing your little secrets and understanding your weakness more than the best of your best friends. But we can pacify ourselves :

"We are just one in a billion Google users. Who is jobless to trace our tracks? "

Para configurarem o vosso browser para abrir os links com o GMail, basta seguir os seguintes passos, não tem nada que saber.

• Ir à barra de endereços e digitar about:config
• Verificar se o valor network.protocol-handler.external.mailto está a true. Se não estiver, alterem-no a clicar duas vezes por cima do mesmo.
• Fazer o login no GMail.
• Copiar o seguinte texto na barra de endereços

• Clicar em Adicionar Aplicação (Add Application)

Pode sempre que quiser mudar essa opção a partir das preferências do Firefox, no separador Aplicações (Applications).

La posta di Gmail è consultabile via pagina web all'indirizzo http://gmail.google.com. E' pero possibile usare anche un client di posta per ricevere ed inviare posta dal server di posta Gmai. Bisogna innanzitutto configurare il nostro account. Apriamo quindi il browser internet e puntiamo all'indirizzo http://gmail.google.com, eseguiamo il login inserendo Nome Utente e Password.
Una volta entrati nella pagina iniziale clicchiamo sul link "Settings" in alto a destra e successivamente sul link "Forwarding and POP", ci troveremo di fronte ad una schermata simile a questa:

L'opzione da cambiare è segnalata da una cornice rossa (la n. 1), clicchiamo quindi su "Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)", se vogliamo ricevere tutti i messaggi ricevuti precedentemente all'abilitazione dello scaricamento tramite Client di Posta; se vogliamo scaricare solamente i messaggi dal momento in cui stiamo cambiando questa configurazione, selezioniamo la seconda opzione: "Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on".
Un'altra interessante opzione è la n. 2, la prima voce del menù a discesa (Keep Gmail's copy in the Inbox) ci permette di mantenere la posta scaricata tramite Outlook Express anche nella posta in arrivo di Gmail, la seconda voce (Archive Gmail's copy) archivia i messaggi scaricati, e la terza voce (Trash Gmail's copy) elimina i messaggi e li inserisce nel "Trash", nel cestino, che dopo 30 giorni sarà automaticamente svuotato. Una volta selezionate le opzioni preferite confermiamo cliccando sul pulsante "Save Changes"

Terminata questa operazione possiamo chiudere il browser Internet. Apriamo Outlook Express e clicchiamo sul menù "Strumenti->Account", dalla piccola finestra che verrà aperta clicchiamo sul pulsante "Aggiungi ->Posta Elettronica" : si apre una finestra, semplicemente compiliamola inserendo il nostro Nome e Cognome o qualsiasi testo si voglia far apparire come mittente della e-mail inviata. Clicchiamo su Avanti

In questa finestra inseriremo il nostro indirizzo Gmail (es.: utente@gmail.com), se sbagliamo a digitarlo o ne inseriamo uno non corretto la persona alla qualche invieremo e-mail non sarà in grado di risponderci o la mail di risposta verrà inviata ad un'altra persona;

Qui inseriamo il server di posta in arrivo (POP3) e il server di posta in uscita (SMTP), rispettivamente pop.gmail.com e smtp.gmail.com; vedi immagine:

Nell'ultima schermata inseriamo come nome account l'indirizzo completo di Gmail (utente@gmail.com) e la password, quindi clicchiamo su Avanti e Fine.

Terminati questi passaggi, clicchiamo sul menù "Strumenti->Account", selezionamo dalla lista l'account Gmail appena creato e clicchiamo su "Proprietà". Si apre una finestra, clicchiamo sul Tab "Server" e selezionamo l'opzione "Autenticazione del server necessaria" come in figura:

Spostiamoci ora sul Tab "Impostazioni Avanzate" e selezioniamo le opzioni "Il server necessita di una connessione protetta (SSL)" sia per la sezione Posta in Arrivo che Posta in Uscita, nella casella della posta in arrivo inseriamo come valore "465" e in quella della posta in uscita il valore "995", verificare in figura i settaggi corretti:

Se abbiamo inserito tutti i dati correttamente possiamo finalmente iniziare a scaricare ed inviare la posta Gmail tramite Outlook Exspress.

N.B.: Se si utilizza un firewall, integrato in un router ADSL o ISDN oppure un firewall software o hardware, è necessario rendere disponibili ("aprire") le porte "465" e "995" affinchè Gmail funzioni correttamente, in caso contrario potreste ricevere errori di connessione al server sia in ricezione che in invio posta.

I never get spam emails. Ever! It's wonderful!

However, yesterday when I logged on to check my inbox, to my great surprise, there was an new email entitled "I need you to get back to me now asap," from a person named Yom Kulio.

Now, I am experienced enough in the world of email to know that this was not actually of any importance and was definitely SPAM.

The subject's bad grammar and the name that I've never even heard before are obvious red flags.

My initial reaction was, "Gmail, how could you?!"

"After years of an unblemished record in protecting my inbox from online sweepstakes and male enhancement ads, why now??"

I was hurt. Let down. Betrayed.

That was until I decided to read it. (You know, for giggles...)

The African friend told me of an investment opportunity in Africa and
he convinced me to come along with loads of money when coming down. On
getting here, all his intention was to take away the money from me,
play me and leave me on my own.

I came from the United States with all the money I've gotten from my
Dad's business and contracts renumeration. Because the african Friend
told me of an idea to invest in West African sculptures there. When I
got here, he made all possible means to get the money from me and
runaway with my money.When I noticed this, I took the money and my
travelling boxes and deposited it with a Security/Insurance Company
here in Africa in order to safe myself and my assets.Thereafter I left
the Friend apartment.

I don't want to fall into another terrible situation again after all
these that I have faced and I am not ready to be used this time. I
need to be very very careful of whom i will go out with or date this

Seguramente muchos de ustedes tienen una cuenta en GMail que usan como predeterminada. También es probable que se desesperen a la hora de dar click en algun enlace mailto y se ejecute Microsoft Outlook

Si eres como yo y te desagrada esta situación, sigue estos pasos para darle una solución.

• Abre tu cuenta de correo de GMail y pega el siguiente texto en la barra de direcciones: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler ("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")
• Si eres usuario de Google Apps en vez de usar el código anterior pega este: javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler ("mailto","https://mail.google.com/a/example.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")
• Firefox te preguntará si quieres asignar el servicio de GMail a los enlaces mailto.
• Finalmente, cuando quieras enviar un correo te preguntará qué aplicación quieres utilizar. Solo tienes que dar click en GMail, marcar la casilla que dice que no vuelva a preguntarlo nunca y listo.

Tambien les recomiendo el siguiente complemento para Firefox: Gmail Notifier. Sirve para checar tu cuenta automáticamente cada cierto intervalo de tiempo. Es compatible con Firefox 3.0
