TiVo and US satellite TV provider, DirecTV, have extended their existing partnership with a new, non-exclusive deal that calls for the companies to develop, market and distribute a new TiVo-powered HD DVR service to DirecTV customers. The deal also extends various mutual intellectual property arrangements between the two companies. DirecTV has offered a version of the TiVo service, branded as "DirecTV with TiVo," since 2000. However, since 2005 it has not been actively marketing the service, instead pushing a DVR service based on the XTV platform of interactive TV and conditional access technology provider, NDS. Nevertheless, DirecTV and TiVo have continued to collaborate on some level, signing in April, 2006 an extension of their commercial and advertising relationship (they say that relationship will be further expanded via their new agreement), and earlier this year deploying a software update to existing DirecTV with TiVo boxes, that enables various new features including DirecTV's Remote Booking service.

Under the terms of the new deal, DirecTV and TiVo will work together to develop a version of the TiVo service for DirecTV's broadband-enabled HD DVR platform. The companies say that the resulting offering will support the latest TiVo and DirecTV features and services, including TiVo's Universal Swivel Search and TiVo KidZone. The new platform is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2009, and the companies say that they will release information on its pricing and packaging in conjunction with the launch. DirecTV says that it will continue to develop and offer its own portfolio of set-top boxes as "primary offerings" both for new and existing customers and that the new TiVo-powered box will be offered to those customers as an "alternative choice."

According to a regulatory filing by TiVo, as part of the new agreement "DirecTV will pay a substantially higher monthly fee for households using the new high-definition DirecTV DVR's with TiVo than the fees for previously deployed DirecTV DVR's with TiVo service...The fees paid by DirecTV are subject to monthly minimum payments that escalate during the term of the agreement starting in 2010," the filing continues, "and those minimum payments are substantially higher than in the prior agreement." The filing also states that, under the new agreement, 1) "DirecTV is...obligated to annual marketing commitments, including significant cross-channel promotion of the high-definition DirecTV DVR with TiVo service to be developed by TiVo"; and 2) "DirecTV is entitled to most favored customer terms as compared with other multichannel video distributors in the United States to whom TiVo grants a license to distribute certain TiVo technology in the future." "We have had a very successful history with DirecTV," TiVo president and CEO, Tom Rogers, said in a prepared statement. "Together we brought the TiVo experience to millions of DirecTV customers and now we look forward to launching a next-generation product that uses TiVo's latest features to truly showcase DirecTV's broad selection of high-definition programming--all stitched together with the elegance of TiVo's renowned user experience. This agreement demonstrates our continued embrace of mass distribution opportunities in cooperation with major multichannel operators who recognize the value of giving their customers a choice of compelling user experiences." Added Chase Carey, president and CEO of DirecTV: "As the industry's content and technology leader, DirecTV has a long-standing reputation for developing innovative, advanced products and services, including our highly successful series of DVR's and HD DVR's. We will continue to work with TiVo and make this new product available to all new and existing DirecTV customers who may want to add TiVo on top of our industry-leading experience."

In other TiVo news:

• The company has formed a partnership with Research In Motion (RIM), a developer of technologies for the wireless mobile industry and the company behind the BlackBerry family of smartphones, to bring customized TiVo services to the BlackBerry platform. According to the companies, the partnership will see them developing a range of mobile entertainment services that "marry" the BlackBerry with content delivered to consumers through TiVo's service. The first of these planned services--which is scheduled to be available later this year--will enable BlackBerry users to access an EPG and schedule TV recordings on the go, the companies say, and their future collaboration will focus on software applications that further simplify mobile access to video content. "TiVo subscribers will soon be able to wirelessly control their TiVo DVR's using a BlackBerry smartphone--anytime, anywhere--and that is a powerful example of how our respective technologies can complement each other to serve our mutual customers," RIM's co-CEO, Jim Balsillie, said in a prepared statement. "As the BlackBerry smartphone continues its evolution as a modern lifestyle device, the importance of home entertainment integration will continue to grow and TiVo will be the key in providing consumers with greater flexibility in accessing television content."
• The company has launched a new, high-definition DVR, called the TiVo HD XL, which it claims offers more recording capacity than any other DVR available today. The new box, which is priced at $599 and which can currently be purchased through TiVo's Web site and through Amazon.com, Magnolia Home Theater and a number of other retailers, offers 150 hours of HD recording capacity and is THX-certified. Other features include dual tuners, a backlit remote control, an HDMI cable, standard TiVo features such as Season Pass recordings, Universal Swivel Search and WishList searches, and support for the various broadband services now offered by TiVo, such as movie and programming downloads, on-demand music videos from Music Choice and songs from Rhapsody, and the ability to browse and watch YouTube videos. According to TiVo, extensive video analysis and performance testing by THX will ensure that the new box always records and plays back content at maximum quality and resolution. "TiVo pioneered the DVR category, and they are maintaining that position with the new high-performance, high-capacity TiVo HD XL," Michael Rudd, chief AV Architect at THX, said in a prepared statement. "As more consumers adopt high-definition programming, they will expect their recorded content to reflect the same level of quality and consistency as the original broadcasts. With a Terabyte hard drive, the TiVo HD XL lets users enjoy more HD movies, sports and other programs in high definition than ever before, and THX certification ensures that the quality is always superb."
• The company has signed a deal with Entertainment Weekly magazine, under which programs recommended in the latter's "What to Watch" section will be automatically recorded by broadband-enabled TiVo boxes. According to the companies, the new service--which they are billing as allowing "two powerful properties to work together to create a more seamless television viewing experience for their respective audiences"--will launch in the fall, and will be jointly marketed. The companies' deal will also allow TiVo subscribers to download broadband video content from Entertainment Weekly's EW.com Web site, including such original programs as "Just a Minute," "Ausiello TV" and "Idolatry," and behind-the-scenes footage from photoshoots. "We are pleased to have an opportunity to work with one of the most respected entertainment brands to help change the dynamic of how a franchise like Entertainment Weekly and the TV world can be combined to create a whole new level of service for the reader and the viewer," TiVo's Tom Rogers said in a prepared statement. "TiVo is all about providing easy solutions so that television viewing can be molded to an individual's lifestyle and Entertainment Weekly's development of this complete solution for its readers is just what TiVo stands for."
• According to news agency, Reuters, US District Judge David Folsom has delayed his ruling on whether DISH Network owes TiVo additional damages in the so-called "Time Warp" patent case between the companies. (Note: The patent dispute between TiVo and DISH dates back to 2004, when TiVo sued the then-EchoStar, alleging that it was violating its US patent, #6,233,389--i.e. the "Time Warp" patent--which was granted to the company in May, 2001. The patent describes methods for recording one program while playing back another, and for watching a show as it is recording, as well as a storage format that supports "trick-play" capabilities, such as pause-live-TV, fast-forward, rewind, instant replays, and slow motion.) TiVo, which was awarded $74 million in damages in the case, claims that it is owed an additional $220 million in damages for the 18 months during which the verdict in the case was stayed while DISH/EchoStar unsuccessfully appealed it (DISH claims that it only owes TiVo an additional $16 million). Judge Folsom said that he would try to rule on the issue by October 1st, but cautioned that his ruling might come as late as November. News of the delay caused a 16.5% decline in the price of TiVo's shares.
• In its most recent earnings release, the company included an update--presented as a quote from an unnamed "top Comcast executive"--on the current status of its relationship with Comcast: "We are pleased with the progress of the TiVo service and have broadened its footprint in our New England market to Connecticut," the Comcast statement read. "Refinements to optimize the product's performance have been mostly completed, significantly improving the user experience. Importantly, we intend to light up a full marketing campaign around TiVo in September and, upon this occurring, we will be announcing multiple additional markets to which TiVo will be rolled out through next year. We will also continue to fund development work for the TiVo product, which will include expanding the feature set and adding support for tru2way infrastructure." TiVo also stated in the earnings release that "the TiVo service on Cox, which is currently in trials, is on track for a launch in Cox's New England market later this year."

Korean MHP and OpenCable specialist, Alticast, contacted [itvt] last month to let us know that satellite TV operator, SkyLife (has around 2.3 million subscribers), has successfully completed its roll-out of next-generation HD set-top boxes, which are equipped with Alticast's AltiCaptor middleware. The boxes are powering a new HDTV service, called simply SkyLife HD, which is billed as the first H.264-based HDTV service in South Korea. The operator claims that the new service--which offers content from, among others, Discovery HD, KBS Prime, MBC Drama, UTV, XTM, JGolf and Sport Channel--has attracted 60,000 new subscribers since its roll-out began in May. In addition to 15 linear HD channels, the service offers a range of interactive TV applications, including fortune-telling, weather, karaoke and games apps, as well as VOD. The new HD deployment builds on an existing relationship between Alticast and SkyLife, under which the former provides the satellite company with MHP middleware, ITV applications and an EPG. "The system functioned just as it was supposed to function, and it was extremely easy for us to build our new HD services on Alticast's middleware." SkyLife CTO, Sung Yong Woo, said in a prepared statement.

In other Alticast news:

• The company said last month that it has successfully passed all site acceptance tests for the implementation of MHP-based interactive TV with Taiwanese cable operator, kbro. The latter--which claims to have 1.2 million subscribers and to enjoy a 25% share of the Taiwanese cable TV market--has tapped Alticast to provide it with middleware, a headend system and an EPG; it has also tapped Prime and Hyundai Digital Technology for its digital broadcast receivers and Nagravision for its conditional access system. According to Alticast, kbro plans to launch a range of interactive services by the end of the year, including VOD and PVR. "We are very excited about this first successful commercial launch," C.H. Jih, SVP and head of technology at kbro, said in a prepared statement. "I would like to thank Alticast for their dedication and unsparing effort to complete this project on schedule even under high pressure for time and for providing us with the stable and compelling platform. The system functioned just as it was supposed to function, and it was extremely easy for us to build our new HD services on Alticast's middleware." kbro is a member of the Cable Broadband Institute of Taiwan (CBIT), an organization whose membership includes cable and broadband providers, content suppliers, regulators and elected officials. Alticast says that it hopes that kbro's successful launch of MHP-based ITV will "serve as an example to other CBIT members that have plans to develop or commercialize digital broadcasting and interactive TV services based on DVB-MHP and to accelerate the service launch of other major MSO's that Alticast is currently under negation with."
• The company showcased a number of new solutions at the IBC show in Amsterdam last week. They included:
  1. a GEM HD DVR solution based on the tru2way standard and the Broadcom 7405 chipset. In addition to typical DVR functionality, the solution offers picture-in-picture support, enabling the viewing of and navigation to other channels, while simultaneously watching or recording a separate channel.
  2. the latest version of its channel navigation solution, altiExcite. According to the company, the solution features an HD graphical user interface and supports VOD, push-VOD, near-VOD and IPTV. Alticast claims that it offers "unparalleled" channel navigation speeds and can run in all set-top box environments.
  3. a solution called altiTOK TV Plus, which it says enables video services in a non-QoS network environment, using DnP (Download and Play) and push-VOD technologies. Alticast claims that the solution dramatically improves download times for on-demand programs and interactive TV services. "Alticast is very excited about this year's exhibition at IBC," Alticast managing director, Anthony Smith-Chaigneau, said in a prepared statement. "In this fast-paced digital TV world, Alticast continues to present great technology and innovation for the industry and is clearly out to impress. During the past year, we have significantly improved and expanded both our technology solutions and strategic partnerships worldwide."
• The company has also secured a middleware deal with EchoStar Europe--see article in this issue.

Hoje, depois de alguma pesquisa, por pura curiosidade, acerca dos preços e velocidades das conexões por todo o Brasil, me peguei pensando nas dificuldades que encontramos para, acreditem, podermos usar a internet de sem limites. Quem pensa que estou me referindo ao limite de tráfego na banda larga, engana-se redondamente. Refiro-me à época da linha discada, ainda presente na realidade de muitos, porém com os seus dias contados. Ainda bem! Adquiri meu primeiro PC em 2004, logo naquela mudança do plano real. Até hoje eu me recordo de como fomos enganados. Naquela época nem sabia o que era HD, memória e etc. Minha configuração era de um 486, com Windows 3.11, 256MB de HD, 4MB de memória Ram, Kit multimídia, um monitor horrível de 14 polegadas. Essa velharia, na época, me custou, pasmem, 3.500 reais. Internet era coisa de pesquisa para universidade naquela época, restrita aos professores de computação, mas era algo que eu ouvia dizer que chegaria em breve. Durante meses foi explorado pelo vagabundo dono de uma loja da cidade que me vendou esse PC usado e montado às pressas. Vejam como funcionava a coisa toda... se eu tinha algum problema de configuração, levava para a loja e pagava 60 reais, apenas para instalarem um drive. Precisando de um Microsoft Word pirata? Pagava 100 reais e os malandros roubavam e roubavam.

No final de 94 ou começo de 95, não lembro ao certo, chegou o primeiro provedor de internet na cidade. Corri pra lá, fiz a assinatura, comprei um modem US Robotics 28.800 kbps, instalei no PC (mais 60 reais) e lá estava eu na internet. Achava o máximo. Lembro que no site do UOL tinham apenas uns 3 revistas, mias alguns jornais e uma sala de bate-papo. Nossa, era tudo muito primitivo. Ah, melhor era o meu plano de acesso. 20 Horas por mês. Imagina isso? 20 horas por mês! Tínhamos que calcular as horas conectados, os pulsos telefônicos, que naquela época custavam 4 centavos quando você conectava e depois, mais 4 centavos a cara 4 minutos.

Em seguida abriu o segundo provedor da cidade e trouxe consigo uma inovação. Por 30 reais mensais você tinha internet ilimitada. E foi uma festa! Muita gente correu pra lá. Me recordo que tentei fazer a assinatura, mas eles não comportavam mais assinantes para não prejudicar a qualidade. De maneira relutante, o primeiro provedor cedeu e também disponibilizou internet ilimitada na cidade. Alguns meses depois surgiu mais um, e depois mais outro. A diferença entre eles, no entanto, não era de velocidade, pois ainda estamos falando da linha discada, mas sim da disponibilidade da linha. Os dois primeiros tinham tantos assinantes que conseguir fazer a conexão era uma tarefa difícil, pois a linha estava freqüentemente ocupada. Claro, que isso só acontecia depois da meia noite e a partir do sábado das duas da tarde até a segunda seis da manhã, horários em que a cobrança de pulso era única.

Todos os meus amigos estavam conectados nos dias de semana dá meia noite até às 6 da manhã. Era uma febre. E qual era o programa mais utilizado? O mIRC é claro!!! Era maravilhoso! Você poder entrar em contato com outras pessoas, de outros lugares, trocar uma idéia era realmente fantástico. Já nessa época comecei a me interessar pelo que se chamava Broadband. Lido sobre o ADSL e seus derivados e fiquei fascinado. Mas nem sinal de chegar aqui. Surgiu em SP as primeiras conexões rápidas, ADSL Cabo e Rádio. A possibilidade de ficar conectado a qualquer hora e o tempo que quisesse era de arrepiar. Depois de esperar alguns anos, assistir às primeiras reportagens sobre a banda larga, e babar, chega na cidade as primeira conexões a rápido. Os preços eram absurdos! Primeiro só instalavam em prédios com, no mínimo, 10 assinantes. Até tentei contratar o serviço para minha casa, porém, a mensalidade de 500 reais acabou com o meu sonho.

Acho que no começo de 2001, a Telemar lança o ISDN, sistema que requer duas linhas, pois utiliza os dois canais para aumentar a velocidade da sua conexão. Não colou!Muito instável e caro. Finalmente em 2003 chega o ADSL da antiga Telemar, hoje OI. As velocidades eram 256k, 512k e 728k. Caríssimo, como era de se esperar. Contratei a de 256k. Na época era uma maravilha, mesmo com o sistema de autenticação arcaico, eu poderia navegar e ficar conectado o tempo que eu quisesse. Infelizmente, tendo a Telemar, OI como empresa dominante na cidade, a coisa ainda não evoluiu tanto. Hoje tenho uma conexão de 1MB. Não tenho tanto do que reclamar, exceto que o suporte é inútil, não resolve nada e tenta, invariavelmente, colocar a culpa no seu PC. Conseguir falar com a OI, caso sua conexão esteja lenta?Acho que só através do PROCON agora.

Vi nesses dias, com bastante alegria, que a empresa JETCOM já disponibilizou velocidades de até 4MB. Claro que os preços ainda estão altos, mas se compararmos 1MB da Telemar que custa 169 por mês, o da Jet está bem melhor, pois mesmo 1MB custa 89,90 ainda muito caro, mas não esquizofrênico como o da OI. Temos outra empresa, dessa vez a Cabo, mas os preços que ela cobra não merecem nem comentários. Só, para ter uma idéia do delírio dela, ela cobra 450 por 1MB. Com isso, acho que não preciso falar mais nada. Ahh, agora tem a Claro. 1MB, com franquia de 1G por mês. Um LIXO! Só seria boa para quem não tem opção alguma. Mas concorrer com a OI e a JCOM com limite de tráfego? Vai sonhando, Claro vai! Eu sei que eles têm o iPhone, mas já me manifestei sobre os preços do iPhone no Brasil em um post anterior.

Acredito ser apenas uma questão de tempo para os preços caírem mais e mais, e espero que o Ministério Público continue atuante, como sempre, e de olho na OI. Os preços são realmente abusivos onde eles não têm concorrência. As mensalidades são irreais em alguns estados, e totalmente acessíveis nos estados onde a concorrência está presente. O monopólio deve ser brutalmente combatido e a concorrência fomentada, para o nosso bem.

Saya nggak mau defensif, saya tetap positif karena toh saya pun pengennya budget lebih efisien. Saya juga nggak suka kalau terlalu gambling. Dan saya pun lebih senang kalau bisa lebih menguntungkan. Tapi realistisnya sebetulnya udah nggak perlu dicorat-coret lagi pun udah bisa kebaca. Yang udah pasti harganya itu ada beberapa, diantaranya:

• Sound post udah pasti kena minimal 50
• Proses DI udah pukul rata aja deh 300
• Cetak 45 copy juga ketahuan deh 400
• Iklan bareng 21 di Kompas aja kemaren abis 250

Itu cuma ujungnya produksi film aja udah keluar angka 1m! Cuma ujung, nggak lengkap pula. Sementara, produksi belum dihitung sama sekali. Sisa 500 buat sewa alat, operasional, lokasi, art, kostum, bahan baku, dari A sampai Z belum dihitung. Terus, apa pemain dan kru nya gratis? Kemaren nyebut-nyebut maunya next one pakai sutradara dan editor yang 'bagus', tapi kalau begini ya mana masuk angkanya. Apa mau potong ekstrim, syuting ala FTV cuma 5 hari? Duh jangan, kayak nggak belajar dari pengalaman namanya. Kamera dan alat lain bisa saya tekan, nggak usah pake 790 lagi, pake Z1 aja, tapi berapa gede sih bedanya? Si Z1 butuh lampu banyak juga. Avid di kantor walaupun yang Meridian dulu keren, nggak bisa buat online HD. Au ah. Ngacak-ngacak itungan dulu besok. Mau tahu yang realistisnya berapa. Atau kalau lagi nawar barang "abisnya berapa nih?". Saya pengen stay positive aja, aduh jangan sampai film ke 2 diundur. Mati angin saya.

Yeni sezona yine birçok iddialı yapımla giren Kanal D, izleyicilerine, Meltem Cumbul ve Özcan Deniz’in başrollerinde oynadıkları yeni dizisi “Aşk Yakar”ı Ekim ayında yayınlayacakları müjdesini verdi.

Aşk Yakar Dizisi HD Kalitesiyle Ekranlarda

Türkiye’de HD (yüksek çözünürlük) yayınına öncülük yapan Kanal D, yıl sonuna kadar dizi, film ve programlarının yüzde 80’ini, prime time’daki programlarının ise yüzde 90’ını HD olarak yayınlayacak.

Televizyon yayıncılığında “ilk”lerde hep imzası bulunan ve her daim sektörün lideri konumunda olan Kanal D, 1 Eylül 2008 tarihi itibari ile HD (High Definition) yani, yüksek çözünürlüklü yayına başlayarak, Türkiye’de bir ilke daha imza attı.

En sevilen diziler HD olarak yayında

Kanal D, milyonları ekran başına kilitleyen; “Aşk-ı Memnu”, “Binbir Gece”, “Asi”, “Yaprak Dökümü” dizileri ile “Sabahların Sultanı” ve “Esra Ceyhan’la” programlarını HD olarak yayınlıyor.

Kanal D, bir buçuk yıldır HD yayını üzerinde çalışıyor ve bir yıldır da bu konuda stüdyo yatırımları yapıyor. Kanal D, Doğan TV Center’daki stüdyolarının HD yayınına uygun hale gelmesi için şu ana kadar 5 milyon euroluk yatırım yaptı.

HD yayını izleyiciye seyir keyfi yaşatıyor
Yüksek çözünürlükte beş kat daha net bir yayın yapan, renklerin daha gerçek, derinlik ve boyut algısının daha iyi olduğu ve sanki seyredilen dizi, film ya da programın içindeymiş gibi duygu veren HD yayını için, Kanal D yatırımlarını bundan sonra da sürdürecek.

One statement was made that compared this next-generation Wii to the Game Boy being succeeded by the Game Boy Advance. If so, the “Wii HD” might get a massive hardware upgrade.That direction is somewhat different than what Nintendo has taken in the past. Since the release of the Wii, they have claimed that hardware isn't everything – and they were proven right with the tremendous success of the console.

The new console, if indeed on track, is estimated for a release in 2011.

How do you spell it: DirecTV, DiectTV or Direct TV?  While you figure it out, I'll first tell you why you need to spell it correctly.

1.  DirecTV has more channels than Dish Network (main competitor in satellite TV) and cable.

2.  Local channels are included in all DirecTV packages, not in cable and Dish Network.

3.  DirecTV has a more affordable DVR service, with the 4 months for free.

4.  Free S&H.

5.  DirecTV has more subscribers than Dish Network as of 2008.

6.  DirectTV offers additional sports viewing fetures like the bird’s eye view and others.

7.  DirectTV has no activation fee unlike Dish Network and some cable networks.

8.  DirecTV has a more affordable HD programming.

9.  Only DirecTV has the advanced Tivo technology.

10.  DirectTV allows more options and a better control of pay per view charges.

So how do you spell it?  It doesn't matter.  As long as it's better. :-)
