Was meint ihr?

What Is It?

This is not only another Marvel comic book movie, but the first to be entirely the creation of Marvel Studios.

Iron Man is the story of Tony Stark. He is a weapons mogul and an electronic and mechanical genius. Terrorists, capture him, using his own weapons to do so, then try to force him to build a new weapon for them. Instead, he secretly creates a metal suit that he uses to escape. (All of which is in the preview.) When he finds out that his company has been selling weapons to America’s enemies under the table, he perfects his suit to undo the wrongs that were done in his name.

How Was It?

It is said that Charlie Sheen had tried for the part of Peter Parker in Spider Man. He should have held out. Tony Stark is a cross between Charlie's womanizing alcoholic character on Two and a Half Men and the “wise as a serpent” lawyer James Woods portrays on “Shark”. Unfortunately for both actors, Robert Downy Jr's performance not only propels the movie, but insures he will wear the suit for many sequels to come. Between Downy and a great supporting cast, with a well thought out story, and a great supporting special effects crew, this was a fun movie to watch. This film moves, pounds and blows up from start to finish; all the while fueled by a “Power Metal” soundtrack (bracketed by AC/DC's Back in Black at the opening and Black Sabbath's Iron Man at the end).

Is It Good For Kids?

This is a hard one. Tony Stark is a rich play boy and it is not played down like in the BatMan movies where it's “all just an act.” He does admit that his life was wrong but does not go into specifics. Still, a lot of kids will not be able to make that logical leap with such a likable character.

The violence is ever present but is not always “comic book” style. Where Iron Man vs Fighter Jets, is exciting, Tony Stark vs Terrorist is also a touch gruesome. This was not meant to be a kid’s movie.

The final warning is the sexuality of the movie. We don't see anything more than you would see on a beach (though we probably see too much there) but it all has a sexual context. We even see Stark in bed with a girl who is wearing a shirt and underwear, but the scene changed once we “know what's going on”. The hard thing is that these people are dressed inappropriately, but the camera does not “Stare”, it simply lets us know what a letch the character is. What makes this hard is that while the images are there, they are not front and center, blurring the line of distinction.

I did hear one second string character take the Lords name in vain, but screenit.com found much more that I missed.

I strongly suggest you read the break down on Screenit.com before bringing kids and teens.

What About Spiritual Issues?

Though every Marvel movie brings up God, I am happy to announce that this is the second Marvel Franchise to reference God and not be Heresy. (Ok, The Hulk was just too confusing to know if it was good or bad, and I have not seen Blade or Electra.)

Stark shows off a new weapon, which is designed to “protect” us. It will destroy an entire city and is called “Jericho.” When demonstrating Jericho, the missiles explode behind Stark as he holds out his arms in a Jesus Christ pose and the winds blow behind him and nearly push over the onlookers. There is also a comical reference to Matthew 22:21.

Stark is said to have “Come back from the dead” when he returns from captivity. Of course after this “resurrection” he announces that he finally knows his purpose in life and why he was put here. All of this of course suggests that there is an intelligent designer who has a plan for Starks life. From the other inferences we can assume which “Designer” they are thinking of, but it is nowhere as specifically Christian as the Spider Man Series.

What is your Recommendation?

The few shots of scantily clad girls were short enough that you know they were just there to tell the story, but a bit too long for me to be comfortable with.

Barring that, it was an exciting and often tense movie with some welcome messages and symbolism. Still, if you are looking for Tense thrills with Biblical Symbolism, “I am Legend” does it better.

If you are looking for Comic Book action with Biblical Messages, “Spider Man 3” does that very well.

If you are looking for a flawed man searching his soul through a film with messages about finding God's purpose for your life, all with a Comic Book Superhero Motif, then look no further than M. Night Shyamalan's, Unbreakable.

But if you are just looking for “Iron Man,” I would say it's the second best offing Marvel has for us.

If you’ve seen the rather silly movie, “I Am Legend”, you might make the connection between the title and body of this article. And believe it or not, I’m gonna use the silly movie for a bit of an analogy. (Though some preachers have already beaten me to it.)

If you haven’t seen the flick, “I Am Legend”, here’s the situation. Will Smith is the only living human left in New York City. A virus wiped out the rest of the population of the world except for some whom the virus turned into rabid, killer zombies. (Hey, I didn’t write it, I’m just recapping.) So Will’s trying to survive in this rather empty, scary world.

Those of us who’ve been through de-conversion, know how it looks when you’re right in the middle of the process. It’s upsetting, and frankly scary. Familiar beliefs, touch points, and in many cases even people that you knew are gone. It’s a bit like the I Am Legend world.

In I Am Legend, Will occasionally plays “Three Little Birds” by Bob Marley. The song has the chorus, “Don’t you worry ‘bout a thing, ‘cause every little thing’s gonna be all right.” The song seems quite out of place in a lonely world where rabid, killer zombies are on the rampage.

So how does this tie in for the de-converting folks out there?

If you’re in the midst of feeling your faith slipping, or you’re in the middle of giving it up, or you have just given it up, then you’re world is changing/will change/has changed. Right now your world looks lonely, it looks scary, it may even look monstrous.

Along the de-conversion way, you will encounter troubles, and feel the uncertainly of a world now bereft of the faith that has probably defined your very existence, and you may face animosity, or even lose touch with friends or family members.

But from the vantage point of a year to two or more post de-conversion, many of us on this blog can tell you that it’s not so bad in the end. From the far side of the whole process we can tell you that it will be OK. You will rebuild your life. What we on this blog can say to you is, “don’t you worry”, “everything’s gonna be all right”.

I can’t tell you what a wonderfully clear view of the world, and of life, one has from a ‘no deity’ perspective. It’s, well … to borrow a line from a different song, a familiar hymn, it’s as if, “I once was blind, but now I see”. De-converting may not be easy or pleasant to go through, but for me, and for many others, it’s well worth it.

Take it away Bob...

Series stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are reportedly game for a third outing of the popular alien cop franchise according to series producer Walter Parkes. Al that's needed now is an opening in the actors' schedules as Smith is busy with a gazillion projects including The Last Pharaoh and an I Am Legend prequel while Jones is hard at work shooting Islands In The Stream, his second movie as a director. That and there's no script yet. Anyway, Men In Black III (MIIIB?), are you interested?

Apparently democratic nations are entitled to a system of “one man, one vote.” Unfortuna

Apparently democratic nations are entitled to a system of "one man, one vote." Unfortunately, that doesn't apply to the United States, or else Al Gore would have become President in 2000, and either we'd a) all be driving hybrid cards and the world would be at peace, or b) we'd all be dead and the animals will have taken over our planet, a la the zombies in I am Legend. In actuality, "one man, one vote" really comes down to "one man in Florida, one vote that actually counts," and "one man in MA/CA/NY/TX/KY/TN, go out for Tuesday night's all-you-can-eat pasta at Uno's instead, because your state's already decided... so your opinion just doesn't matter."

Now, of course, someone will argue that if everyone in these states believed this were true, then there might come the election day when no one would vote, Uno's would be filled to the brim, and Ralph Nader would be elected president. Thankfully it seems that only cynics and cost/benefit economists would actually boycott voting in a silent protest against the system on election day. The rest of the country proudly does its civic duty so that the world doesn't capitulate into a zombie-like state with an incompetent man as its leader... (insert Bush joke here). Still, I am sure that there are many people who would have voted but didn't, because they knew their voice would not be heard... unless they moved to Boca Raton.

Apparently there were reasons for the electoral college back in the day of T-Jeff and G-Dubs (the original). And there is historical precedent as to why Iowa, of all states, is first in the all-important primary season (surprisingly, it's not because of its astounding diversity). But how is our system democratic today, when only a few decide for us all? It sometimes seems like Iowa and New Hampshire give us our choices, and Florida and Ohio pick our President. Is it so hard to hold a two-hour event where our candidates make speeches, perhaps sing, and then Americans just call in to vote? Ryan Seacrest could host. That'll show those guys in Iraq what real democracy is all about.

But in all seriousness, I'd like to see a change in the system that has produced us Mr. George W. Bush...twice. Why not have an election-year lottery to determine the order of voting in primaries? It could be a family event, like watching the NBA draft lottery or the Powerball numbers. And why not get rid of the electoral college in favor of a truly democratic vote? I know that would drag me away from the pasta bowls to actually do my civic duty.

After director Matthew Vaughn (Stardust) bailed out to helm Kick-Ass and D.J. Caruso (Eagle Eye) threw his name in the mix, another filmmaker is now attached to Marvel Studios' forthcoming adaptation of the comic book Thor, one that is the most unusual and the most interesting.

Indeed it's none other than Northern Irish actor/director Kenneth Branagh (Much Ado About Nothing), who is probably being sought for his strong affinity with shakespearean themes, which are apparently prominent in the comic. If this pans out, I'm convinced Branagh could churn out an amazing film.

Thor will be firmly set in the same continuity as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and other forthcoming Marvel films, and like those movies will lead into the planned 2011 The Avengers movie. Thor will be released in 2010. The screenplay was written by Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend).

After months of speculation, a prequel to last year's sci-fi hit I Am Legend is now officially underway with director Francis Lawrence and star Will Smith set to return and newcomer D.B. White penning the script. The film will follow Smith's character Robert Neville a few days before and a few days after a virus mutates mankind. I was extremely disappointed by I Am Legend, especially considering Lawrence's previous film Constantine, so I'm pretty much unexcited, how about you?

Brian Lumley: His Vampires Do a Lot More Than Just Suck

Brian Lumley doesn't just write novels (and short stories and poetry) he writes series of novels, and series of series of novels. He's a seemingly unstoppable force of nature -- or perhaps, considering his subject matter, a supernatural force. The prolific British author (over forty books and still counting) is best known for his "Necroscope" series, a rich tapestry of vivid characters and complexity that begins by combining the unforgettable Harry Keogh, a man who can speak to the dead, with Cold War espionage and a race of vampires from another world.

Invaders (published by Hodder and Stoughton in the U. K. as E-Branch: Invaders), just out this spring from Tor, is the first of the "E-Branch" trilogy that will end the Necroscope-related titles at 13 books altogether. The first ten Necroscope books have sold 1,500,000 copies in the U. S. alone and they have been or are in the process of being published in nine other countries. (Lumley's total sales for Tor overall have now passed the 2,000,000 mark.) Comic books and a role-playing game have been based on Necroscope themes as well.

Lumley waited for two decades to write about vampires. "When I read Richard Matheson's I Am Legend (God, how many years ago?) it put me off writing my own vampire novel for the first 20 years of my writing career. It was THAT good," says the author." But what's in will out, so eventually I did write it...and as we've seen, the thing got to be like Topsy. But I was conscious that quite a few vampire tales were being written, and I wanted vampires that did a lot more than just suck. They had to have histories, they had to have an origin, there had to be a damn good reason why they hadn't long since taken over the world, and so on. It became very involved, and the more story I told, the more there was to tell." The complexity of the mythos he has created will, he admits, probably will be the death of it. "The big problem now is that while I used to do lots of historical, geographical, and political (if you will) research, now I have to research my own books! There are so very many threads running through them that if I'm not careful I might easily trip myself up. That's why the series will probably end with this trilogy. It's simply getting too complicated to continue."

A fan of horror and fantasy fiction since his teens, Lumley was almost thirty when he began writing in 1967. He was serving as a Royal Military Policeman in Berlin. "I was on Night Duty on the desk and had nothing much to do in the wee small hours. I read August Derleth-edited Arkham House collections." (Derleth and his small press, Arkham House, were noted for the posthumous popularization of H. P. Lovecraft.) "They saw me through many a night and shaped the style and contents of my first stories. I actually wrote some of those stories on duty, on that desk in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin. And I typed them up from my scrawly longhand and sent them to Derleth who bought them."

By then he was no longer a part of the fan scene, "I hadn't been since I was a kid, 13 or 14 years earlier. I didn't know a damn thing about professional publishers or publishing. And I definitely didn't know that Derleth was the dean of macabre publishers, the man who had first published Van Vogt, Bradbury, Bloch, Leiber, Lovecraft (of course), and so many others that they're literally a Who's Who of our favorite genres. So these stories of mine were single-spaced things on oddly-sized sheets, unnumbered pages, stapled in one corner, rolled up and stuffed into cardboard tubes, and posted surface mail to Wisconsin ... from Berlin! It's just amazing that they ever got there -- let alone that he read them! Can't you just see him trying to unroll them, and having to nail them to his desk top in order to read them? But it appears I was lucky then, and I've stayed lucky ever since."

Lumley returned to civilian life in 1981 and became a full-time writer. He produced --among many other titles -- the science fictional "Psychomech" trilogy -- Psychomech (1984), Psychosphere (1984), and Psychamok! (1985) -- in which a hero with enhanced psychic abilities fights bad guys with similar powers; Demogorgon (UK 1987, US 1992) features the spawn of Satan himself using his supernatural powers to fight his dark side and against his unholy father; four books in the heroic fantasy "Dreamlands" series, and, of course, the Necroscope books which began in 1986.

Lumley's early reputation was linked to his liberal use of Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos in both short stories and his earliest novels -- the "Titus Crow" series of the mid-to-late-1970s. Crow, an occult detective, tangles with Lovecraft's monsters in a fantastic extradimensional void in the series. "Without Lovecraft there would never have been a Titus Crow. All Mythos stories are dependent upon HPL, of course. But another big influence was the much-maligned August Derleth, the boss of Arkham House. He viewed the Mythos from a different angle, and if he could do it so could I. Burroughs was probably an influence, likewise Abraham Merritt, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, that whole bunch. But you know, I've read and talked Lovecraft until I really can't do it any more. Why can't we just say of him that he was an original, one of the greats, and that he influenced so many of us that he probably is the most important cornerstone of the weird fiction tradition today...and leave it at that?"

The Titus Crow and Necroscope books are also a Cold War metaphor. "The Necroscope books were guided by what was going on in the world while they were being written. The new trilogy is set in the future a couple of years, so it's pretty much guess-work. And it's mainly ecological as opposed to political. I've been lucky in my predictions so far; the Channel Tunnel I mentioned in the second Crow book (Transistion, 1975) is now a reality. But I really can't say if it's protected by star-stones from Mnar or not. I suspect not..."

Future worlds? Fantastic other dimensions? Star-stones? Politics? Was Lumley intentionally crossing genre boundaries to synthesize, horror, science fiction, and fantasy? "No, my crossing genres wasn't planned. It was just me trying to learn the business of writing, experimenting and finding out what I could do best and where it would take me. The first paperback book I did, The Burrowers Beneath, was a horror story "after Lovecraft". Its sequel, Transition, was a fantasy. The next two sequels were science-fantasy, and the last book in the series, Elysia, was pure fantasy. I was trying 'em all, that's all. But Necroscope? It has bits of lots of genres, but chiefly horror. Let's face it, the best of the "horror" movies do much the same thing. Is Bodysnatchers (original and remakes) horror or science fiction? Is The Thing, or Alien or Predator? See what I mean? On the other hand short stories I've done -- such as Fruiting Bodies and The Sun, The Sea and The Silent Scream -- are pure horror. So if you ask me what I am ... I'm a horror writer." Fruiting Bodies won Lumley a British Fantasy Award in 1989 and he was given a Grand Master Award at the 1998 World Horror Convention.

A couple of decades in the military, is not exactly common training ground for most horror writers. Although the author will agree that his first career has enhanced his writing career, he also feels writing offered him an escape from from his military career. "The army took me places, showed me a lot of things, let me meet a great many diverse people -- all grist for a writer's mill. But in places as dreary as Berlin was in 1967, writing did provide something of an escape."

The military also gave Lumley a taste for travel. He's visited or lived in the United States, Cyprus, Berlin, Malta, and more than a dozen Greek islands. He and his American-born wife, Barbara Ann, now live in Devon, but they still enjoy travel and Lumley particularly enjoys visits to the Mediterranean where he can indulge a bit in moussaka, and imbibe a little retsina, ouzo, and metaxa.

What would he do if he weren't writing? "There are lots of other things that I haven't done, places I haven't seen. So eventually I'll have to find time for those things while there still is time. We've got one life and the older we get the more we come to realize how short it is. I just like telling stories. Writers are in the entertainment business, and it gives me lots of pleasure to entertain my readers. But I'm no longer driven to write. Now I have to drive myself." Lumley's books have inspired music as well as reading. "There's a British heavy metal group called Necroscope; I've never met them. And in the States there are a handful of groups that have dedicated work to me. No mistaking the source of inspiration on tracks with titles like 'What Will Be Has Been,' or 'From Northern Aeries to the Infinite Cycle of the Unborn Lord.' Those are from a CD by a group called Epoch of Unlight. HEAVY!" One of his close friends in the U. K, is Keith Grant-Evans of The Downliners Sect. "Sect's been around all of twenty-five years and more; recently did a new CD called Dangerous Ground with yours truly doing voice-overs on 'Escape From Hong Kong' and 'Bookworm'."

But music's been an influence on Lumley as well. "Way back when I was 15 and 16, I had three main hobbies: Rock 'n Roll, the jive (the dance), and SF. I'm talking 1953, '54 here. I was a founder-member of NEZFEZ, the North-East Science Fiction group. We used to meet in a little town close to Newcastle at a pub called The Red Lion and talk books and like that -- you know the scene. I was doing artwork and "poetry" for fanzines (UK and USA) with titles like CAMBER, PEON, SATELLITE, etc. That was the, er, "intellectual" side of me. But I was also buying that vinyl and teaching the jive at a local dance hall. No, really -- at 16, yes! Hey, it was a great way to meet the girls!"

"So music has always been in me," he continues. "I suppose since I was ten and my big brother brought back all those 12 inch records from Germany with him in '48, after he'd finished his National Service. And was I ever into the big bands! Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Glenn Miller, the Dorseys, etc! Today, I have this really excellent Ray Charles collection that I started to put together in 1960 in Germany, and been at it ever since. I'm usually listening to Ray while I write."

And where will the future find Lumley? "The future is a devious thing. We're all time-travellers, albeit pretty damn slow time-travellers. We only go forward at a speed of one day per day, one step for every step. And maybe that's the right way to take the future: I'll just let it sneak up on me. I mean, it's been doing it for 61 years, so why try to change things now? More to the point: when the E-Branch trilogy is finished, I think I may return to short stories awhile, just to keep my hand in -- or even to get my hand BACK in! I mean, it's quite a long time since I did any short stories. And I think I'm looking forward to it..."

Statutory warning: This post is in no way related to the music track Lonely by Akon.

Loneliness is the worst fear most people can have. For people who deny it, let me ask you a question. What would you think will happen if you were to be abandoned in the middle of the sea on a deserted island with no traces of getting back to civilization? Of the many this question was asked to, many will answer that it would be the best thing that happened in their life. Think again. I agree, it might be very peaceful in the beginning, but as time progresses you will come to a startling realization that you are going mad. You will be talking to yourself extensively and also with many non-living things which might look like human figures.

Anyone who doesn't agree should and must watch the movie I am LEGEND starring Will Smith. The movie is based on a novel previously written by Richard Matheson. The acting done by Will Smith cannot be described by mere words. But I am not here to talk about acting. I wanted to tell you what loneliness can make you do and what it does to you. Anyone who was thinking about that deserted island bit should seriously reconsider.

Why not alone? Mainly because all living beings are social in nature. They need at least one other of their own species to survive. By survive, I didn't mean the survival of the species. I meant the survival of that particular living being itself. Ever heard of solitary confinement? Ever wondered what good it will do to punish a person by ordering solitary confinement? Well, according to me it is the worst form of punishment any human being can be put through. If it prolongs, it can make the person go insane and drive him to the extent of killing himself.

At last I come to the part which I really needed to write about. How do I counter loneliness? Simple, Talk to people around you. Have you ever felt you feel so lonely even though you are surrounded by many people? If your answer is yes, that is because you want to keep to yourself even if there are people who are willing to interact with you. Introverts tend to feel lonely very often. They expect something more(don't know what exactly) from the people around them.

Come on people, wake up! Life is not going to wait for you to open up at your own pace. Times change, people change. Try to make the best of what little time you have with the people in your life rather than waiting for something extraordinary to happen. I sign off today stating my favorite thought again; Live life like there is no tomorrow! Good day to all of you! Come out and enjoy.

Warner Bros. wants to create another 'I Am Legend' movie. Except there is one slight problem, Will Smith's character is kind of um...dead. So they're going to make a prequel instead, about everything leading up to this virus and how he starts solving Rubix's Cubes with this adorable little kid who likes a character from the Boondocks. Could I be confused with another Will Smith movie? Maybe. I would really like to say this is a horrible idea, but I honestly would go watch it. Just so I can site back and laugh at the fact that those CGI graphic zombie people look just like the iRobot, robots! Ah looked familiar huh!?

Final word? F*ck zombies.

So you know how the movie started, they found a cure for cancer, news cast, jump to panic and evacuating people. Well Warner Brothers have announced that they are going to start shooting for the prequel of it all. It's said tha the prequel will chronicle the final days of humanity in New York before a man-made virus caused a plague that left Smith’s character (Neville) the lone survivor among a mutated mob in the city. Im not really sure if the concept of what happens before people started turning into zombies is going to be interesting. But its Will Smith, theee Fresh Prince himself and he can make a $1.00 out of 15¢ if you give him a chance. No Date on when the movie is planned to come out

And not just in my own lunchtime either.

And not just in my own lunchtime either.

Actually I'm talking about the Wil Smith movie based on the novel.

The movie sucked.

OK, that's a little harsh. The movie has shades of greatness about it and I like how Wil Smith plays the Last Man On Earth (see also Bruno Lawrence) but the ending, boy, the ending sucked.

It sucked out loud.

SPOILERS:

Our hero, who isn't much of a hero (and that's the way I like them) blows himself up to save the girl and the boy and to destroy his Arch Foe the guy with the stretchy face.

Girl and boy drive off into the sunset taking his fix-um syrup with them to presumably some kind of post 28 Days Later life of happiness.

This was wrong on so many levels but mostly because it didn't let us see that the bad guy had become more than just a villain but was in fact capable of love and a great deal of humanity.

You see, the novel is all about the last human in a world of vampires. By the end of the novel, he has himself become the monster while the vampires build a new society around him. He is legend, because he's the creature that haunts their dreams, that takes their young, that drinks their blood (well, performs medical experiments on them) and so on.

The book ends with the hero realising what he has become and killing himself.

The movie version (Will Smith's version, which is the third) ends in a suicide but without the realisation and that really ruined it for me.

However, as the littlest Jedi once said, "There is another".

Another ending. One I missed because I watched the DVD and not the extras.

Here it is. I can't figure out how to embed it so you'll have to click through and follow.

Sadly, it seems they're going to make a prequel and given that I Am Legend is mostly flashbacks, that seems a tad pointless and money grubbing to me. But hey, what do I know?
