Question: What ultimately do we look for in a government?

This was not one of the questions that i brought to class, but it was a question that came up inthe class discussion. I found this question very interesting and something that i have never really thought about. For all my life i have never been concerned with politics and government. But now with the elevtion comming and with this topic brought up in class, i find myslef thinking about it more and more.

I believe that everyone could answer this question different and it would still be right, because they are entitled to their own opinion. But im not even certaian how i would answer this question. I think that a government should allow the people to run the country such that in a democracy, but should step in when things are taken too far, like when a company tries to form a monopoly. We need a leader who has a firm hand but will not takw things to far as to have the people live in fear.

This is a topic that i plan on looking further into.

It’s a weird dual-personality thing that happens when you have to manage a piece of private in

It's a weird dual-personality thing that happens when you have to manage a piece of private information around people who don't know you know, and especially around kids who don't know you know and especially especially when that piece of information was stumbled upon honestly rather than dug up secretly. The weirdness manifests itself as a 'you'-body that stands and talks and is, and as a superior 'you'-body that supervises and pulls you away from reveal. The result is ignoring what you know and life plays on in a land where everyone knows simply what they are supposed to and nothing more.

Last year, I was teaching a group of three and four year olds. Two girls were always shepherded to class by one particularly strange woman and I figured they were friends or cousins rather than sisters because they were the same age, not twins, and had different last names. The woman was the mother of one girl - Olivia - and always acted quite frantic and odd and her daughter always went to the wrong group. The friend - Dylan - was always crying and I could never make her stop and never did understand what her deal was - I even asked her dad, and he folornly said that she just missed her mother, which is the reason three quarters of children cry in class. And, most kids simply cry as a reaction to unfamiliar things.

So.

I'm teaching the same two girls in the group a level higher this year. Dylan no longer cries and is now rather joyful and connected and both her and Olivia make it to the proper class. Only, now, I know that the now four-year-old spent a year crying because her mother died and the psycho mom was taking care of four kids under the age of six while her children's friends' dad took care of his dying wife. It's all terribly sad. I have no business with this knowledge, I was only told this because I was writing report cards and Dylan hadn't been to class in a month, so all I do is play go-go-stop and draw lines in the circuits and act like a fool and all the kids do is follow and listen and have fun for an hour in a land where everyone knows what they are supposed to know.

And today Dylan called me "Mom" twice, which made me feel very sad and very responsible but also gave me an idea to write my personal statement about for my application to the program that I must write an incredible statement for in order to make it into the meniscus of people whose ability to write persuasively transcends the faulty course selections they made at age fourteen.

It's incredible knowing things!

(Also, please update because I know too much about my life already and I really don't want to keep coming back here and seeing my drivel on top of the page.)

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="192" caption="Dow drops 370 to go below 10,000"][/caption]

The dow dived again Monday, almost as if investors didn't know last week the president signed the $700 billion bailout plan. It would seem that investors are even more fearful that the $700 billion bailout plan will not fix the financial crisis fast enough if at all. The fear actually spreads to a world wide scale, having many believe a global recession is imminent if the U.S. markets are to be the cause for stock shockwaves in Europe and Asia.

Investors could have thought that it'll be a quick fix as the president illustrated to us in comments he made Monday. "It's going to take awhile to restore confidence in the financial system," Bush said. Well if no one believed him all they had to do is watch the Dow Jones Industrial Average throughout the day Monday. As the market bounced up and down, many analyst thought that there was a chance that we'd see an all-time low as it dropped as much as 800 points hours before the close of the business day. The good news is that it recovered and closed with a loss of 370. The bad news is that the dow fell below 10,000 for the first time in four years.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="192" caption="Dow drops below 10,000"][/caption]

We can only wait and see what happens tomorrow, but as for the near future we have to speculate. New polls suggest that the highest number of people ever say that the economy is in bad shape, and three out of four believe that it's getting worse. So as the general public losses their confidence, then so goes the investors as well. But as we see it doesn't end with the market. In the post $700 billion bailout signing America, we can begin to figure out what happened. But Wall Street business isn't the only place being affected. From the auto industry to the clothing industry are reporting new losses. And all of this has a reach that stretches around the world.

Not for nothin' this crisis was almost to seem to be only contained in the U.S., but it looks as most of the world tends to follow America's example, there's no difference here. The next president will have his work cut out for him. Not only will he have to repair our financial crisis, but he may also have to repair strained relations with country's who may start to feel that we dragged them down in this mess.

Jeff Jarvis has an interesting point here about the article no longer being the building block of news information. He believes topics could dethrone articles. On topics:

"...I want a page, a site, a thing that is created, curated, edited, and discussed. It’s a blog that treats a topic as an ongoing and cumulative process of learning, digging, correcting, asking, answering. It’s also a wiki that keeps a snapshot of the latest knowledge and background. It’s an aggregator that provides annotated links to experts, coverage, opinion, perspective, source material. It’s a discussion that doesn’t just blather but that tries to accomplish something"

I agree- It could operate as a sort of google search in reverse. Rather than a clean slate search, publishers find an issue and see where they can build outward, evolve the topic or point of view. The bigger idea is a story is never told and concluded, it changes and grows based on the interest of the reader. After all we know things are changing.

The Functional Impact of Mental Imagery on Conscious Perception

I had started out the month with this great idea; to make an active effort to learn something new ev

I had started out the month with this great idea; to make an active effort to learn something new every day. I know in general this happens without actually trying. Acquisition of information and knowledge just happens by being alive. But I figured I could go out of my way to look up and new an interesting things that I had either never heard of before, or was always curious about. I had planned to post something on the bulletin board on myspace and add a note to facebook to ask for people to help me brainstorm, but I never got around to it.

I started October strong and then quickly failed the following days due to work and school restraints, but I'm still trying.

You know how people say to think positively or that how you think about something affects the way you see the world? Like if you're grumpy and you bemoan the fact that you're having a bad day, thing just seem to constantly get worse? These are things that everyone, through the experience of human life, generally know to be true whether you can quantify it or not, but researchers from the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee have finally applied scientific laboratory research to see if this is true, and their results were fascinating.

"Letting your imagination run away with you may actually influence how you see the world. New research from Vanderbilt University has found that mental imagery—what we see with the "mind's eye"—directly impacts our visual perception.

"We found that imagery leads to a short-term memory trace that can bias future perception," says Joel Pearson, research associate in the Vanderbilt Department of Psychology. and lead author of the study. "This is the first research to definitively show that imagining something changes vision both while you are imagining it and later on."

"These findings are important because they suggest a potential mechanism by which top-down expectations or recollections of previous experiences might shape perception itself," Pearson and his co-authors write.

It is well known that a powerful perceptual experience can change the way a person sees things later. Just think of what can happen if you discover an unwanted pest in your kitchen, such as a mouse. Suddenly you see mice in every dust ball and dark corner—or think you do. Is it possible that imagining something, just once, might also change how you perceive things?

"You might think you need to imagine something 10 times or 100 times before it has an impact," says Frank Tong, associate professor of psychology and co-author of the study. "Our results show that even a single instance of imagery can tilt how you see the world one way or another, dramatically, if the conditions are right."

- Science Daily (July 4th, 2008)
-The Functional Impact of Mental Imagery on Conscious Perception

I had come across this article when I had been struck with the desire to see if there was anything written out there on the topic of how we see things in the world, at least in respects to reality vs. mental interpretation. For a while I have tossed around the issue in my head about how I can remember what friends of mine physically looked like before I met them and then how differently they appear to me perceptually after I get to know them. I'm of course talking here about the "mind's eye" interpretation, not true physical traits like they were heavier or had purple hair before I knew them and once we were friends they changed, but more projected applied mental creations of who those people are.

When we encounter someone we don't know, especially if its at a distance (as in even without verbal communication), you immediately begin grouping and categorizing, deciding things about who this person is, how this is important in relation to you, analyzing body language, etc... and all of these things culminate in creating a picture of who this person is in your head. Once you have had time to gain history and experiences with someone, all that added information begins to affect your mental image of them.

I find it interesting at times to compare and contrast the past versions of my friends and loved ones with their current versions I carry with me in my head. It helps you to see the potential flaws in the way you might judge others before you get to know them, seeing your biases. And for me personally it has helped me become better at giving people a chance, because I have seen first hand, based on my own experiences (empirical data!), how often I can be wrong about people, and that makes me feel like quite the fool.

I'm not sure yet whats up next on my research list, but I have a lot of work to do before November prepping for all the writing I'll be doing. I'm sure I will find something neat to read about!

Until next time,

Over 9/10’s of venture capitalists and other experts expect to see at least 10% investment increases in this sector. The optimists are looking for investment increases of 20%. Investments will be spread among the following sectors: Energy storage (fuel cells and batteries), Clean coal, Wind energy, Alternative fuels, and Solar

By region, investment in this industry will vary: West Coast 60%, Southwest 14%, Midwest 13%, Northeast 9%, and the Southeast 4%.

Are you moving into a foreign city? Are you looking for new apartment because you are newly wed? Whatever the case, its never easy to find the right apartment that matches all your needs. In fact, finding a nice and budget apartment requires plenty of research, time and money. Regardless of it is your first or fifth time getting an apartment, you must carry out plenty of research on a property before deciding whether to rent or buy your desired apartment. The general things to know about cheap apartments before getting one usually requires knowing the type of apartment, its location, costs, amenities available and other law related things.

A huge variety of apartment types are available on the market today. The range varies from the more affordable Housing & Development Board (HDB) flats to the more pricey executive flats and private condominiums. HDBs and luxury HDB flats are planned to have autonomous facilities such as supermarkets, playgrounds, schools and food centres located nearby. Condominiums offer more amenities such as swimming pools, tennis courts and security services. So, depending on your budget and preference for these facilities, you can choose from a wide variety of choices to choose from now-a-days.

Renting the apartments is generally more worth for money compared to buying if you are staying for short periods. This is the reason why you need to take into consideration your likely time period of stay, travel expenses and other maintenances fees that have to be forked out each month when doing your calculations.

Variety of Apartments can be found nearly everywhere. However, the further it is located, the more you will have to spend on transportation and waste precious time travelling. As such, the closer you are located to central locations like the city, the higher your rental or purchase price will be. Apartments with better ease of access to facilities like malls and clubs usually fetch a higher price.

Getting the right apartment can be done easily if you know what to look out for and the steps to take. Remember to ensure that your purchase or rental process falls within the legal limits and that you have applied for all the necessary licenses before moving in. You should visit the relevant authority sites to get information on the legal procedures to take.
