ISTANBUL, October 10 (Compass Direct News) – An Egyptian Coptic Christian woman has been sentenced to three years in prison for failing to uphold her Islamic identity – an identity she didn’t know she had for over four decades.

Sisters Shadia and Bahia Nagy El-Sisi, both in their late 40s and residents of the small east Delta town Mit-Ghamr, were arrested and tried for claiming their official religious identity as Christian. Unknown to them, their religious identity officially changed 46 years ago due to their father’s brief conversion to Islam. Both are illiterate.

Shadia El-Sisi was tried for stating her religion as Christian on her marriage certificate and sentenced to three years in prison on Nov. 21, 2007. She was released two months later. Last Sept. 23 a judge also sentenced Bahia El-Sisi to three years in prison for “forging” her marriage certificate by stating her religion as Christian.

Their father, Nagy El-Sisi, converted to Islam in 1962 during a brief marital dispute in order to divorce his wife and potentially gain custody of his daughters, the sisters’ lawyer Peter Ramses told Compass.

Egyptian law is influenced by Islamic jurisprudence (sharia), which automatically awards child custody to whichever parent has the “superior” religion and dictates “no jurisdiction of a non-Muslim over a Muslim.”

If Bahia El-Sisi’s identity as a Muslim stands, then her religious status could potentially create a domino effect that would require her husband to convert to Islam or have their marriage nullified. Her children, too, would be registered as Muslims. Both women are married to Christians.

“All of their children and grandchildren would be registered as Muslims,” Ramses said. “[The ruling] would affect many people.”

Other sources said it is too soon to determine the fate of the sisters’ marriages and families, as neither of their cases have been finalized.

‘But I Am a Christian’

A few years after his conversion, Nagy El-Sisi returned to his family and Christianity. He sought the help of a Muslim employee in the Civil Registration Office, Ramadan Muhammad Hussein, who agreed to forge his Christian identification documents. Reversion back to Christianity for converts to Islam has been nearly impossible in Egyptian courts.

The daughters discovered they were still registered as Muslims when Hussein was arrested for forgery in 1996 and confessed he had helped El-Sisi obtain fake documents three decades earlier. El-Sisi was later arrested.

When the two daughters visited him in prison, they were detained and accused of forging their Christian identification documents, according to national weekly Watani. A criminal court gave them each a three-year prison sentence in absentia in 2000.

Shadia El-Sisi was arrested in August 2007, three days before her son’s wedding. Her first hearing was on Nov. 21, 2007 at the Shobra El-Khema criminal court; she asserted that she had no idea of her so-called conversion to Islam. Judge Hadar Tobla Hossan sentenced her to three years in prison.

Confronted with the sentence, Shadia El-Sisi kept repeating, “But I am a Christian. I am a Christian,” according to Watani.

She was in prison until Jan. 13, when Prosecutor-General Abdel Meged Mahmood retracted the sentence because she was unaware of her conversion by proxy and due to legal technicalities that voided incriminating evidence.

The advocacy group Egyptians Against Religious Discrimination also pressured the judiciary through a signature drive to release her from prison.

Bahia El-Sisi went into hiding following her sister’s imprisonment, but came out after news of her release. Legal experts believe that when Bahia El-Sisi’s case comes before the Supreme Court, her sentence will be retracted as her sister’s was, as their cases have no legal foundation.

Early in the morning of May 5, however, police arrested Bahia El-Sisi and held her in jail until her hearing on July 20, after which she was released pending the verdict.

On Sept. 23 she was sentenced to three years in prison for “forgery of an official document,” as her marriage license states her religion as “Christian.” Bahia El-Sisi was married years before learning of her father’s brief conversion.

Ramses will appeal to Egypt’s Supreme Court in next week. He said he worries the case could further erode the precarious situation of religious minorities in the Muslim-majority country of 79 million.

“How can the government say to [someone] who has lived 50 years in a Christian way that they must become a Muslim and their children must be Muslim and their whole family must all be Muslims?” he said. “This is very important for the freedom of religion.”

Egypt’s constitution guarantees freedom of belief and practice for the country’s Christian minority, which makes up 10 percent of the population. Islam, however, is the official state religion and heavily influences the government and court system.

The case is an example of the social pressure put on Egyptian non-Muslims to convert when one of their parents embraces Islam, despite the constitution guaranteeing equality, said Youssef Sidhom, editor-in-chief of Watani.

“This is a sick environment that we struggle to change,” Sidhom stated. “According to what is taking place here freedom is protected and provided for Christians to convert to Islam while the opposite is not provided.”

Egyptian courts have continued to discriminate against Christians who have one Muslim parent, according to human rights reports, as the judiciary gives them no choice but to convert to Islam.

On Sept. 24 an Alexandria court awarded custody of 14-year-old Christian twins to their Muslim father even though the twins said they were Christians who wanted to stay with their mother. Egyptian civil law grants child custody to their mothers until the age of 15.

ISTANBUL, October 9 (Compass Direct News) – A Pakistani pastor and his family in Punjab province have been living in fear for months after death threats from a murder suspect and repeated attacks on their house by police squads.

Pastor Christopher Manzer, 55, of Jhugian Baja Singh, told Compass by telephone that a Muslim man blames him for the loss of his wife and unborn baby and has enlisted extremist Muslim groups to mount a wave of attacks on him.

“I’m a Christian pastor, and in Pakistan you know it is a trend to hurt the Christians,” said Manzer, pastor of Pentecostal Church of Jesus Disciples, by telephone from Jhugian Baja Singh, 26 kilometers (16 miles) southwest of Lahore. “Most Christians are suffering very much.”

Mohammad Nawaz considers the pastor responsible for his divorce and the subsequent deaths of his ex-wife and unborn baby following an abortion. Nawaz’s uncle, a man identified only as Makha whom Nishter Colony police are seeking in connection with the murders of two Christian men in the past three months, has called the pastor twice telling him to leave town or die.

Manzer said he received the first death threat from Makha on Sept. 21, and then again on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m.

“Be careful, I’m going to kill you – you have only a few days left in the world … your days are numbered,” Makha told Manzer on the phone last month.

“He is still receiving death threats,” said Shahzad Kamran of Sharing Life Ministry Pakistan (SLMP). “Makha is giving life threats to Pastor Christopher and telling him to leave the area and go to another place, otherwise they we will kill him and his family. They are afraid.”

Seeds of Grudge

Nawaz and the daughter of a member of Manzer’s church converted to Islam in order to elope, hoping that Islamic law would shield them from their families, who were opposed to their marriage.

Convinced that his daughter, Sana Bibi, had been kidnapped, Anwer Masih sought help from Manzer and others to get her back. Soon after Nawaz and Bibi were married, Nawaz became increasingly Islamic in his views, prompting her to seek help from her family to find a way out of the marriage.

Manzer stepped in to help reconcile Masih to his daughter, forgive her and take her back. On July 16, 2007 she filed for divorce, which was approved on March 28. In January, Nawaz had opened a dispute case against Manzer and Masih. A Pakistani court dismissed the case.

Bibi returned to her Christian faith and practices with the encouragement of Manzer. On April 7, however, members of the Liberty police station in Lahore broke into Manzer’s house, kicked him and beat him with sticks for an hour, verbally harassing him and his wife as well as their four children, ages 8 to 21.

Manzer was able to identify the police station because of the van that officers drove and parked near his house. The officers handcuffed him and took him to his church, where believers were gathered for a prayer meeting, and continued to beat him.

This was the first of five beatings and arrests by officers of police stations from other townships around Lahore. Each time friends came to Manzer’s rescue with a bribe, police relented and claimed to have caught the wrong man. The pastor said that paying police to keep them from beating him has exhausted his and his parishioners’ finances.

He said the beatings, which occurred twice in the middle of the night at his home, twice at the church and once at the police station, took place between April 7 and July 5. On two occasions Manzer was able to identify the responsible police station as Model Town Lahore.

The police station of his area, Manga Mandi, supports the pastor but cannot take action against other police stations, a station officer reportedly told the pastor.

On Aug. 26, Nawaz opened a second court case in a First Incident Report (FIR) at Manga Mandi police station against Manzer, Masih and seven other individuals, accusing them of forcibly entering his house in January, physically attacking him and his family and kidnapping Bibi. He further claimed that they threatened to kill him and stole 10,000 rupees (US$125) and gold objects.

“It is a fabricated story,” said Kamran of the SLMP.

Masih told SLMP staff, “Nawaz has relations with some Muslims who support him; he already has implicated us in a false case of quarrel … Now he again implicated us in a murder case of my daughter.”

In May, about five months after Bibi left Nawaz, she was admitted into the hospital with a high fever. She was treated by a midwife but died on May 27. SLMP staff confirmed that she had been pregnant and had had an abortion. According to her medical report, she died due to septic shock.

Manzer said Nawaz enlisted the help of extremist Muslims and his uncle out of anger over his ordeal and because Manzer was acquitted in the first court case against him in January.

“When Muslim groups saw the local police’s good behavior toward me, they approached Liberty and Model Town Police Stations in Lahore to take action against me,” he told the SLMP. “Police from both stations raided my house unlawfully.”

The pastor bears marks of the torture he underwent, while both his wife and eldest daughter have undergone psychological treatment after the attacks on Manzer in their home.

The first hearing in the case opened against Manzer, Masih and the other community members is scheduled for Oct. 19. Manzer said his faith has imbued him with a deep sense of charity toward Nawaz.

“We are praying for protection from God, and that God blesses Nawaz, because I am thinking of him,” said Manzer. “I don’t want to do anything to Nawaz, because I love him.”

The first two words are key as they sum up the elements that the areas of research I will be looking at are anchored by. In other words you can always relate the subject areas, I am interested in, back to one of these words if not both.

We usually think of shapes as pre-defined areas of outlined space that have specific names. We'll grow up knowing that these named shapes have properties that allow the shapes to be classed within certain gropus of shapes too. So a square is made of of 4 right angles at each corner and 4 sides. A triangle with three sides and of various angles and combinations of these.

But can a shape alway be defined? And should it be defined? And how about those shapes which have properties or characteristics that are overlooked? And which characteristics should we look more closely at because they've been overlooked in the past?

The second key word is space. My use of the word implies many senses of space including the mathematical and the scientific (these I believe overlap in some sense), as well as the physical, perceptual and conceptual. I cannot restrict my meaning at this point. I have no reason to restrict until I have conducted more research and found a reason to do so.

What about white space? Is it real? Does it mean something to everyone? What is it's role? Is it intentional? Should it be identified in more places?

An area of study that connects to this idea of space around shapes (and here I wonder - is this space not then a shape too?) is that of Geometry. These shapes are formed from vertices (easier to think of as dots in an invisible grid of any size). These vertices may then be connected with a line from one to another. these lines will be joint in such a way to form a shape. Various shapes are then placed together to form a larger formation. They could arguably be described as a system of shapes. This system could be called a pattern. these patterns can then become quite complex and due to their placement, repetition and possibly the ability to tesselate them - they can be endless and seem to go on for infinity.

One of my biggest aims in my project is to look into the history of Geometry - how it was developed and how it has been used over the centuries (more specifically in art work).

Then there is the branching off of Geometry in nature. I think this is a highly important and interesting subject to delve into. Not only because it entails many mysteries and brings into question the secrets of the Universe. But also because there is a tie with religion and sprirituality which is something that I can relate to on a personal level. Believing in God means that when I see the beauty of nature and proofs of perfection in nature (such as the way the body works and the structures and symmetry in plants and flowers to name a couple) I link it to Divine Creation. This is another aspect I would like to look into further. Especially as belief in this isn't restricted to just one religion.

These main topics then branch off into other areas but are still anchored by the main theme of shapes, space and I guess now geometry too. By always having my main question along the lines of ' the place of geometry in the world around us' I will have something to refer back to. Is that what I am looking at? Am I any closer to finding the answer? Am I looking into something that is relevant or have a veered off too far down a small cobbled street?

Outcomes for project: My background has been predominantly in expressing some form of communication and his has been mostly interactive. I would like to continue this by producing work that compels the user/viewer to become involved with it. I believe that the most interactively creative works are those that captivate the viewer and involve them within a process. This can be in many forms such as when using sensors to trigger some kind of behaviour or change in the work (lighting, sounds etc). This could be on an abstract level too where triggering thoughts and movements in people and influencing these is enough of a form of interaction. Only that this can be more difficult to measure.

However, my interpretation of an interactive work would be using multimedia as a possible option. My work has always been either viewable of a computer screen (short video clips), graphics, websites. Or viewable on some form of small physical and traditional media such as paper or canvas. I would really like to create some sort of installation to take my experience and work to the next level or beyond for this project. This installation would be my blank slate. Possibly like a box or container that allows a person to fully submerge themselves within it - literally or mentally. The key is for it to be thought provoking. I would want the person to question their surroundings, the purpose of the installation and investigate it too. Possibly manipulate their thoughts by pre-determining the factors the could influence their senses and perceptions related to the space around them.

And that is the end of my notes from my journey to Uni. Yes I am one of those people who can write loads of notes whilst travelling on the tube/bus/camel :)

We had a sort of informal feedback session after one of the Critical Framework lecture where we were required to write in one sentence what our project was about. I knew it would be a bit crazy to even attempt this so I decided to use the key words to form almost a sentence. I came up with 'Shapes and space - the place of these and geometry in the world around us' using my notes from the journey in. It could be the closest I've got to a working title yet so I just let that be discussed in the group.

After some discussion with Andy (course leader) and some feedback and questions from fellow students it would seem that perhaps I should narrow my field of research down a tad bit so that I can concentrate on finding the niche in which my project would excel. Something no one else is questioning, expressing or even addressing. Or maybe they will have but I'll be doing it from a different angle? a unique p.o.v?

Only time will tell.

2. One thing that struck me as missing from this article in the discussion of Qutb was the idea of Occidentalism. And mostly, that Qutb's demonizes the United States as a culture without moral character. In his view, the West is only a blind, inhumane dedication to applied sciences and not rich, substantive culture of original thought. Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit wrote a book called Occidentalism that points out that this belief — the U.S.'s lack of a moral compass — does not originate in Islam or Sayyid Qutb. It was a definite school of thought in Japan pre-WWII and Nazi Germany. Buruma also brings this up in his book "Murder in Amsterdam." I would have liked to have seen some of this context to help break down the identification of extremist thought with Islam.

اطَّلَعَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نَتَذَاكَرُ. فَقَالَ: مَا تَذَاكَرُوْنَ؟ قَالُوا: نَذْكُرُ السَّاعَةَ. قَالَ: إِنَّهَا لَنْ تَقُوْمَ حَتَّى تَرَوْنَ قَبْلَهَا عَشْرَ آيَاتٍ. فَذَكَرَ الدُّخَانَ وَالدَّجَّالَ وَالدَّابَّةَ وَطُلُوْعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا وَنُزُوْلَ عِيْسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَمُ وَيَأَجُوْجَ وَمَأْجُوْجَ وَثَلاَثَةَ خُسُوْفٍ خَسْفٌ بِالْمَشْرِقِ وَخَسْفٌ بِالْمَغْرِبِ وَخَسْفٌ بِجَزِيْرَةِ الْعَرَبِ وَآخِرُ ذَلِكَ نَارٌ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ الْيَمَنِ تَطْرُدُ النَّاسَ إِلَى مَحْشَرِهِمْ
Rasulullah melihat kami ketika kami tengah berbincang-bincang. Beliau berkata: “Apa yang kalian perbincangkan?” Kami menjawab: “Kami sedang berbincang-bincang tentang hari kiamat.” Beliau berkata: “Tidak akan terjadi hari kiamat hingga kalian lihat sebelumnya sepuluh tanda.” Beliau menyebutkan: “Dukhan (asap), Dajjal, Daabbah, terbitnya matahari dari barat, turunnya ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam, Ya’juj dan Ma’juj, dan tiga khusuf (dibenamkan ke dalam bumi) di timur, di barat, dan di jazirah Arab, yang terakhir adalah api yang keluar dari Yaman mengusir (menggiring) mereka ke tempat berkumpulnya mereka.” (HR. Muslim no. 2901)
Di antara tanda kiamat kubra yang termaktub dalam hadits di atas adalah keluarnya Dajjal. Pembahasan masalah keluarnya Dajjal merupakan pembahasan penting disebabkan beberapa faktor yang disebutkan Asy-Syaikh Al-Albani rahimahullahu:
1. Banyaknya orang yang menisbatkan diri kepada ilmu dan dakwah meragukan akan turunnya Nabi Isa ‘alaihissalam dan terbunuhnya Dajjal.
2. Kebanyakan manusia tidak terbiasa membicarakan masalah keluarnya Dajjal dan turunnya ‘Isa bin Maryam ‘alaihissalam.

Dajjal
Secara bahasa:
Disebutkan oleh Al-Imam Al-Qurthubi rahimahullahu dalam kitab beliau At-Tadzkirah bahwa lafadz Dajjal dipakai untuk sepuluh makna. Di antaranya: Kadzdzab (tukang dusta), Mumawwih (yang menipu manusia). Asy-Syaikh Ibnu ‘Utsaimin rahimahullahu mengatakan: “Dikatakan demikian karena dia adalah manusia yang paling besar penipuannya.”
Dalam istilah syar’i:
Asy-Syaikh Ibnu ‘Utsaimin rahimahullahu mengatakan: “Seorang laki-laki pendusta (penipu) yang keluar di akhir zaman mengaku sebagai Rabb.” (Syarah Lum’atul I’tiqad)

Peringatan akan Keluarnya Dajjal
Para nabi telah memperingatkan akan keluarnya Dajjal. Diriwayatkan dari Abdullah bin ‘Umar radhiyallahu 'anhuma, dia berkata:
قَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي النَّاسِ فَأَثْنَى عَلَى اللهِ بِمَا هُوَ أَهْلُهُ ثُمَّ ذَكَرَ الدَّجَّالَ فَقَالَ: إِنِّي أُنْذِرُكُمُوْهُ وَمَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلاَّ قَدْ أَنْذَرَهُ قَوْمَهُ، لَقَدْ أَنْذَرَهُ نُوْحٌ قَوْمَهُ وَلَكِنْ سَأَقُوْلُ لَكُمْ فِيْهِ قَوْلاً لَمْ يَقُلْهُ نَبِيٌّ لِقَوْمِهِ، تَعْلَمُوْنَ أَنَّهُ أَعْوَرُ وَأَنَّ اللهَ لَيْسَ بِأَعْوَرَ
Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berdiri di hadapan manusia, menyanjung Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala dengan sanjungan yang merupakan hak-Nya, kemudian menyebut Dajjal dan berkata: “Aku memperingatkan kalian darinya. Tidaklah ada seorang nabi kecuali pasti akan memperingatkan kaumnya tentang Dajjal. Nuh ‘alaihissalam telah memperingatkan kaumnya. Akan tetapi aku akan sampaikan kepada kalian satu ucapan yang belum disampaikan para nabi kepada kaumnya: Ketahuilah dia itu buta sebelah matanya, adapun Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala tidaklah demikian.” (HR. Ahmad, Al-Bukhari, Muslim, 2930/169)
Dari Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu 'anhu, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
أَلاَ أُحَدِّثُكُمْ حَدِيْثًا عَنِ الدَّجَّالِ مَا حَدَّثَ بِهِ نَبِيٌّ قَوْمَهُ؟ إِنَّهُ أَعْوَرُ وَإِنَّهُ يَجِيْءُ مَعَهُ بِمِثَالِ الْجَنَّةِ وَالنَّارِ فَالَّتِي يَقُوْلُ إِنَّهَا الْجَنَّةُ هِيَ النَّارُ وَإِنِّي أُنْذِرُكُمْ كَمَا أَنْذَرَ بِهِ نُوْحٌ قَوْمَهُ
“Maukah aku sampaikan kepada kalian tentang Dajjal yang telah disampaikan oleh para nabi kepada kaumnya? Dia buta sebelah matanya, membawa sesuatu seperti surga dan neraka. Yang dia katakan surga pada hakikatnya adalah neraka. Aku peringatkan kepada kalian sebagaimana Nabi Nuh ‘alaihissalam memperingatkan kaumnya.” (HR. Al-Bukhari dan Muslim no. 2936)
Dari Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu 'anhu, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
مَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلاَّ وَقَدْ أَنْذَرَ أُمَّتَهُ اْلأَعْوَرَ الْكَذَّابَ، أَلاَ إِنَّهُ أَعْوَرُ وَإِنَّ رَبَّكُمْ لَيْسَ بِأَعْوَرَ وَمَكْتُوْبٌ بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ ك ف ر
“Tidak ada seorang nabi pun kecuali memperingatkan umatnya dari Dajjal. Buta satu matanya, pendusta. Ketahuilah dia buta. Adapun Rabb kalian tidaklah demikian. Tertulis di antara dua mata Dajjal: ك ف ر -yakni kafir.” (HR. Al-Bukhari dan Muslim no. 2933)
Dalam riwayat lain:
يَقْرَؤُهُ كُلُّ مُؤْمِنٍ كَاتِبٍ وَغَيْرِ كَاتِبٍ
“Bisa dibaca oleh semua mukmin yang bisa baca tulis ataupun tidak.” (HR. Muslim 2934/105)

Kejadian-Kejadian Sebelum Keluarnya Dajjal
Banyak kejadian telah dikabarkan oleh Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam menjelang keluarnya Dajjal. Di antara kejadian-kejadian tersebut:
1. Banyaknya yang tewas ketika kaum muslimin melawan Romawi
Diriwayatkan dari Yusai bin Jabir: Bertiup angin di Kufah, datanglah seorang pria yang ucapannya hanyalah: “Ya Abdullah bin Mas’ud, kiamat telah datang.” Maka beliau duduk dan bersandar kemudian berkata: “Sesungguhnya kiamat tak akan terjadi hingga tidak dibagikan lagi warisan dan tidak bergembira dengan ghanimah.” Beliau berisyarat dengan tangannya ke arah Syam seraya berujar: “Akan ada musuh yang berkumpul untuk menyerang kaum muslimin maka kaum muslimin pun berkumpul untuk melawan mereka.” Aku katakan: “Romawi yang anda maksud?” Beliau menjawab: “Ya. Ketika itu akan terjadi peperangan yang dahsyat. Majulah kaum muslimin siap untuk mati (membela agama), tak akan kembali kecuali dalam keadaan menang. Bertempurlah kedua pasukan tersebut hingga terhalangi waktu malam. Maka kembalilah dua kelompok tersebut tanpa ada pemenang dan pasukan yang siap mati telah tiada. Kemudian maju sekelompok kaum muslimin yang siap untuk mati, tidak pulang kecuali dalam keadaan menang. Mereka bertempur hingga sore kemudian kembalilah dua kelompok tersebut tanpa ada pemenang dan pasukan yang siap mati pun habis. Di hari keempat majulah sisa pasukan kaum muslimin. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala berikan kemenangan kepada mereka. Mereka membunuh musuh dalam jumlah yang tak pernah terlihat sebelumnya. Hingga ada seekor burung yang terbang ke arah mereka mati sebelum bisa melintasi semuanya. Ketika itu ada orang-orang yang mencari keluarga bapaknya hanya mendapatkan seorang saja padahal sebelumnya mereka berjumlah seratus orang. (Kalau begini keadaannya) dengan ghanimah seperti apa dia akan gembira? Atau warisan seperti apa dibagikan? Ketika dalam keadaan demikian, mereka mendengar sesuatu yang lebih besar dari itu. Datang seseorang yang berteriak (bahwa) Dajjal telah mendatangi keluarga mereka. Maka mereka pun membuang ghanimah dari tangan-tangan mereka, dan mengirim sepuluh pasukan berkuda sebagai mata-mata. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata: ‘Sungguh aku tahu nama-nama mereka dan nama-nama ayah mereka serta warna kuda-kuda mereka. Mereka adalah pasukan berkuda yang terbaik di muka bumi ketika itu atau di antara pasukan berkuda yang terbaik di muka bumi ketika itu’.” (HR. Muslim no. 2899)
2. Banyaknya kemenangan diraih kaum muslimin
Dari Nafi’ bin ‘Utbah radhiyallahu 'anhu: Kami bersama Rasulullah dalam satu peperangan. Datang kepada Nabi satu kaum dari Maghrib memakai pakaian dari wol (bulu domba). Mereka bertemu Rasulullah di sebuah bukit dalam keadaan berdiri sedangkan Rasulullah duduk. Batinku berkata: ‘Datangilah mereka dan berdirilah antara mereka dengan Rasulullah agar jangan sampai mereka menculik Rasulullah’. Kemudian aku berkata (dalam hati, -pen.): ‘Mungkin beliau ingin berbicara khusus bersama mereka.’ Aku pun mendatangi mereka dan duduk di antara Rasulullah dan mereka. Aku hafal dari beliau empat kalimat, aku hitung dengan jariku. Beliau berkata: ‘Kalian akan berperang melawan jazirah Arab dan Allah berikan kemenangan kepada kalian. Kemudian memerangi Persia dan kalian pun menang. Kalian memerangi Romawi kalian pun diberikan kemenangan oleh Allah. Dan kemudian kalian berperang melawan Dajjal, Allah juga memberikan kemenangan untuk kalian.” (HR. Muslim no. 2900)
3. Kaum Muslimin menguasai Konstantinopel (Istanbul, red.)
Dari Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu 'anhu, Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata: “Tidak akan terjadi hari kiamat hingga orang Romawi datang di A’maq atau Dabiq (dua tempat di Syam). Keluarlah pasukan dari Madinah untuk menghadapi mereka. Mereka adalah di antara penduduk bumi yang terbaik ketika itu. Ketika mereka telah berhadapan, orang Romawi berkata: ‘Biarkanlah kami memerangi orang-orang yang telah ditawan dari kaum kami.’ Kaum muslimin berkata: ‘Tidak, kami tak akan membiarkan kalian memerangi saudara kami.’ Akhirnya mereka pun bertempur. Larilah sepertiga pasukan yang Allah tak akan memberi taubat kepada mereka, sepertiga pasukan muslimin terbunuh dan mereka adalah syuhada yang paling afdhal di sisi Allah, sepertiga pasukan lagi yang tersisa mendapat kemenangan dan mereka tak akan terkena fitnah (ujian) selamanya. Mereka menguasai Konsthantiniyah (Konstantinopel, dahulu merupakan ibukota Romawi Timur, red.). Ketika mereka tengah membagi rampasan perang dan telah menggantungkan pedang mereka di pohon zaitun, berteriaklah setan: ‘Masihid (Dajjal) telah mendatangi keluarga kalian.’ Mereka pun keluar, padahal itu adalah berita batil. Ketika mereka sampai di Syam, keluarlah Dajjal….” (HR. Muslim no. 2897)
4. Dajjal keluar ketika telah sedikitnya orang Arab
Dari Ummu Syarik radhiyallahu 'anha, beliau mendengar Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
لَيَفِرَّنَّ النَّاسُ مِنَ الدَّجَّالِ فِي الْجِبَالِ. قَالَتْ أُمُّ شَرِيْكٍ: يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ، فَأَيْنَ الْعَرَبُ يَوْمَئِذٍ؟ قَالَ: هُمْ قَلِيْلٌ
“Sungguh manusia akan melarikan diri dari Dajjal ke gunung-gunung.” Ummu Syarik berkata: “Ya Rasulullah, di mana orang-orang Arab ketika itu?” Beliau menjawab: “Mereka sedikit.” (HR. Muslim no. 2945)
5. Sebelum keluarnya Dajjal, manusia tertimpa tiga paceklik yang dahsyat sehingga mereka mengalami kelaparan. Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala memerintahkan langit di tahun pertama untuk menahan sepertiga hujan, memerintahkan bumi untuk menahan sepertiga tumbuhannya. Kemudian Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala perintahkan langit di tahun kedua untuk menahan dua pertiga hujannya dan memerintahkan tanah untuk menahan dua pertiga tanamannya. Selanjutnya Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala perintahkan langit di tahun ketiga menahan semua hujannya, tak ada yang turun satu tetespun dan memerintahkan tanah untuk menahan semua tumbuh-tumbuhan. Sebab Keluarnya Dajjal
Sebabnya adalah karena satu amarah. Ummul Mukminin Hafshah bintu ‘Umar radhiyallahu 'anhuma berkata kepada Abdullah bin ‘Umar radhiyallahu 'anhuma: “Tidakkah kau tahu bahwasanya Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
إِنَّمَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْ غَضْبَةٍ يَغْضَبُهَا
“Dia keluar hanyalah karena satu amarah yang ia rasakan.” (HR. Muslim no. 2932)

Tempat keluarnya Dajjal
Diriwayatkan dari An-Nawwas bin Sam’an radhiyallahu 'anhu: Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pernah menyebutkan perkara Dajjal pada satu hari. Beliau merendahkan dan kadang mengeraskan suaranya hingga kami menyangka dia ada di pojok kebun korma. Beliau Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
غَيْرُ الدَّجَّالِ أَخْوَفُنِي عَلَيْكُمْ إِنْ يَخْرُجْ وَأَنَا فِيْكُمْ فَأَنَا حَجِيْجُهُ دُوْنَكُمْ وَإِنْ يَخْرُجْ وَلَسْتُ فِيْكُمْ فَامْرُؤٌ حَجِيْجُ نَفْسِهِ وَاللهُ خَلِيْفَتِي عَلَى كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ إِنَّهُ شَابٌّ قَطَطٌ عَيْنُهُ طَافِئَةٌ كَأَنِّي أُشَبِّهُهُ بِعَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ قَطَنٍ، فَمَنْ أَدْرَكَهُ مِنْكُمْ فَلْيَقْرَأْ عَلَيْهِ فَوَاتِحَ سُوْرَةِ الْكَهْفِ، إِنَّهُ خَارِجٌ خَلَّةً بَيْنَ الشَّامِ وَالْعِرَاقِ فَعَاثَ يَمِيْنًا وَعَاثَ شِمَالاً، يَا عِبَادَ اللهِ فَاثْبُتُوا
“Selain Dajjal lebih aku takutkan (menimpa) kalian. Karena jika Dajjal keluar dan aku masih ada di antara kalian niscaya aku akan menjadi pelindung kalian. Jika dia keluar ketika aku telah tiada maka setiap muslim akan menjadi pembela dirinya sendiri. Allah yang akan menjaminku membela setiap muslim. Dia adalah seorang pemuda yang sangat keriting, matanya tidak ada cahayanya, aku mengira dia mirip dengan Abdul ‘Uzza bin Qathan. Barangsiapa di antara kalian mendapatinya bacalah awal surat Al-Kahfi. Dia akan keluar dari jalan antara Syam dan Irak, berjalan ke kiri dan ke kanan. Wahai hamba-hamba Allah, istiqamahlah.” (HR. Muslim no. 2937)

Dajjal adalah Cobaan yang Terbesar
Dajjal merupakan cobaan paling besar yang menimpa manusia di dunia. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda:
“Wahai manusia, sesungguhnya tidak ada makhluk di muka bumi ini sejak Allah menciptakan Adam sampai hari kiamat yang fitnahnya lebih besar daripada Dajjal.” (HR. Muslim no. 2946)
Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
مَا بَيْنَ خَلْقِ آدَمَ إِلَى قِيَامِ السَّاعَةِ خَلْقٌ أَكْبَرُ مِنْ الدَّجَّالِ
“Tidak ada antara penciptaan Adam dan hari kiamat makhluk yang lebih besar dari Dajjal (dalam satu riwayat: fitnah yang lebih besar dari fitnah Dajjal).” (HR. Muslim no. 2946)

Negeri yang Tidak Dimasuki Dajjal
Tidak ada satu negeri pun di bumi ini kecuali akan didatangi dan dikuasai Dajjal, kecuali Makkah dan Madinah. Anas bin Malik radhiyallahu ‘anhu menceritakan bahwa Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
لَيْسَ مِنْ بَلَدٍ إِلاَّ سَيَطَؤُهُ الدَّجَّالُ إِلاَّ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةَ وَلَيْسَ نَقْبٌ مِنْ أَنْقَابِهَا إِلاَّ عَلَيْهِ الْمَلاَئِكَةُ صَافِّيْنَ تَحْرُسُهَا فَيَنْزِلُ بِالسِّبْخَةِ فَتَرْجُفُ الْمَدِيْنَةُ ثَلاَثَ رَجَفَاتٍ يَخْرُجُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْهَا كُلُّ كَافِرٍ وَمُنَافِقٍ
“Tidak ada satu negeri pun kecuali akan didatangi (dikuasai) Dajjal kecuali Makkah dan Madinah. Tidak ada satu celah pun di negeri tersebut kecuali ada malaikat yang menjaganya. Kemudian Dajjal datang ke suatu daerah -di luar Madinah- yang tanahnya bergaram. Bergoyanglah Madinah tiga kali, Allah keluarkan dengan sebabnya semua orang kafir dan munafiq dari Madinah.” (HR. Muslim no. 2943)
Di antara negeri yang tidak didatangi (tidak dikuasai) Dajjal adalah Baitul Maqdis dan bukit Tursina. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata: “Dia akan tinggal selama 40 hari mendatangi semua tempat kecuali empat masjid: Masjidil Haram, Masjid Madinah, Bukit Tursina (Palestina), dan Masjidil Aqsha (Palestina).” (HR. Ahmad dan lainnya. Asy-Syaikh Al-Albani rahimahullahu berkata sanadnya shahih. Lihat Qishshatu Al-Masihid Dajjal wa Nuzul ‘Isa)

Lama Tinggalnya Dajjal di Bumi
Dalam hadits An-Nawwas bin Sam’an radhiyallahu ‘anhu disebutkan:
قُلْنَا: يَا رَسُوْلَ اللهِ وَمَا لَبْثُهُ فِي اْلأَرْضِ؟ قَالَ: أَرْبَعُوْنَ يَوْمًا، يَوْمٌ كَسَنَةٍ وَيَوْمٌ كَشَهْرٍ وَيَوْمٌ كَجُمُعَةٍ وَسَائِرُ أَيَّامِهِ كَأَيَّامِكُمْ
“…Kami berkata: ‘Ya Rasulullah, berapa lama Dajjal tinggal di bumi?’ Rasulullah berkata: ‘40 hari. Satu harinya seperti satu tahun, kemudian seperti sebulan, kemudian seperti sepekan, kemudian hari-hari lainnya seperti hari kalian sekarang…’.” (HR. Muslim no. 2937)

Yang membunuh Dajjal
Setelah Dajjal tinggal di bumi 40 hari, Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala pun menurunkan Nabi ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam. Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berkata:
يَخْرُجُ الدَّجَّالُ فِي أُمَّتِي فَيَمْكُثُ أَرْبَعِيْنَ يَوْمًا فَيَبْعَثُ اللهُ عِيْسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ كَأَنَّهُ عُرْوَةُ بْنُ مَسْعُوْدٍ فَيَطْلُبُهُ فَيُهْلِكُهُ
“Dajjal keluar di antara umatku selama 40 hari, kemudian Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala mengutus Isa bin Maryam ‘alaihissalam yang mirip dengan ‘Urwah bin Mas’ud. ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam mencarinya dan membunuhnya….” (HR. Muslim no. 2940)
Dalam riwayat lain:
فَيَطْلُبُهُ حَتَّى يُدْرِكَهُ بِبَابِ لُدٍّ فَيَقْتُلُهُ
“Dajjal dikejar oleh Nabi ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam hingga mendapatkannya di Bab Ludd (satu negeri dekat Baitul Maqdis –Palestina, red.). Beliau pun membunuhnya.” (HR. Muslim no. 2937)
Dalam hadits lain:
فَإِذَا رَآهُ عَدُوُّ اللهِ ذَابَ كَمَا يَذُوْبُ الْمِلْحُ فِي الْمَاءِ فَلَوْ تَرَكَهُ لَانْذَابَ حَتَّى يَهْلِكَ وَلَكِنْ يَقْتُلُهُ اللهُ بِيَدِهِ فَيُرِيْهِمْ دَمَهُ فِي حَرْبَتِهِ
“Ketika musuh Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala (yakni Dajjal, -pen.) melihat Nabi ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam, melelehlah (tubuhnya) sebagaimana garam meleleh di air. Seandainya dibiarkan niscaya akan meleleh hingga binasa, akan tetapi Allah membunuhnya melalui tangan ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam, memperlihatkan darahnya kepada mereka di tombak Nabi ‘Isa ‘alaihissalam.” (HR. DUBLIN, October 6 (Compass Direct News) – Militant Islamists in the southern island of Mindanao have stepped up their attacks on majority-Christian villages following the failure of a peace agreement that would have enlarged an existing Muslim autonomous region there.

With Muslim commanders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the southern Philippines yesterday saying ongoing support from the international community was necessary to prevent a full-scale war breaking out in Mindanao, both Muslim and Christian residents in the disputed territories were fearful of what the future might hold.

“The problem is that many people living in these areas don’t want to be part of a Muslim autonomous region,” a source in Mindanao who preferred to remain anonymous told Compass.

“The closer you get to these zones, the more nervous people are,” he said. “The town of Kolambugan, where most of the fighting took place in mid-August, became a virtual ghost town for a while. It had a population of 25,000. But people are slowly returning to their homes.”

A Christian family from the area said many people were afraid to sleep at night because they kept hearing reports that they would be attacked at midnight.

“When MILF forces attack Christian villages, Muslim neighbors are afraid that Christians will retaliate against them, even though they have nothing to do with the violence,” the source added. “This has happened in the past.”

He also explained that some moderate Muslims are drawn to support the MILF because the rebels claim the Christians have stolen their ancestral homelands. Communities in Mindanao often struggle with extreme poverty.

“If MILF is successful in gaining control over these lands, the people assume that their economic situation will improve,” he said. “So although they want the fighting to stop, they sympathize with the MILF.”

While the conflict is primarily political, religion plays a significant role. As a member of the Moro Youth League stated in an Aug. 5 national television interview in the Philippines, “As a Muslim, in order to live in a righteous way, you need to be living under sharia [Islamic] law and with an Islamic government. We believe we have the right to fight for this.”

Other Youth League members on the program agreed that sharia was a primary objective of autonomy, and that Islam was the only “real path of doing anything in this world.”

Violence Erupts

Some 2,000 MILF supporters yesterday held a protest march in Marawi city, Lanao del Sur, appealing to the United Nations and the Organization of the Islamic Conference to compel the Philippine government to revive the aborted peace agreement that would have enlarged the existing Muslim autonomous region in the south.

Breakaway MILF commanders on Aug. 18 attacked several majority-Christian villages after the Supreme Court prevented the Aug. 5 signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD). The agreement potentially would have given the MILF power to establish an Islamic state governed by sharia law.

Christian leaders in Mindanao appealed to the Supreme Court when they realized that if they voted against inclusion in the proposed Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE), their majority-Christian villages would become small islands in the midst of MILF-administered territory. As a result, they feared, they would be forced to move elsewhere.

Incensed by the 11th-hour stalling of the agreement, three MILF commanders on their own initiative led attacks against towns in North Cotabato and Lanao del Norte provinces on Aug. 18, burning homes, seizing livestock and killing at least 37 people. Another 44,000 residents immediately fled the area.

When some Christian residents armed themselves in defense, Secretary of Interior Ronaldo Puno warned that anyone carrying weapons would be disarmed.

The MILF has only 11,000 active fighting men, according to local estimates. But by Aug. 20, the National Disaster Coordinating Council had reported a total of 159,000 people displaced by the rebel attacks.

The Philippine army quickly retaliated, sweeping villages in an attempt to seize the rebel commanders.

After two weeks of violent clashes, the Philippine government officially abandoned the MOA-AD. Spokeswoman Lorelei Fajardo said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo would seek a new agreement based on consultation with legislators and local politicians rather than negotiations with the MILF.

Furthermore, the government would concentrate on the “disarmament, demobilization and rehabilitation” of MILF cadres, Fajardo said.

In response, MILF leaders rejected any renegotiation of the peace deal with Arroyo’s administration.

Overcoming Prejudice

An opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Aug. 7 stated that the MOA-AD would only reinforce prejudices between Christian and Muslim communities.

Under the agreement, WSJ claimed, the government would further divide Mindanao into Muslim and Christian enclaves, increasing the likelihood of territorial disputes. Separating Muslims from the rest of Philippine society, it stated, would encourage a vision already held by MILF to help create a pan-Islamic state covering several countries in the region, including Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.

Finally, the WSJ said, less Philippine control of Mindanao would “invite even more terrorist activity in an area that already has strong ties to al Qaeda.”

While there are proven terrorist leanings in groups such as the MILF and the Abu Sayyaf, not all area Muslims approve of or engage in such activities.

Camilo Montesa, a key figure in peace negotiations, in his blog on Aug. 30 described an encounter with a young man who believed that Muslim residents would readily seize property from Christians once the BJE were formed.

Others told Montesa that, “Muslims were scouting and marking the big houses of Christians in Cotabato and staking a claim over them in anticipation of the signing of the peace agreement.”

“The hearts and minds of the people are the battlefields, and not some hill or base camp,” Montesa concluded. “There is a limit to what arms and war can produce ... It is unfortunate that we are so divided as a people at this point in our national life.”

Reclaiming ‘Ancestral Domains’

As Islamic identity strengthened in the Middle East after World War II – and as many Philippine Muslims traveled to study in Middle Eastern countries – certain sectors of the Bangsamoro population became committed to reclaiming “ancestral domains.”

Their claims dated back to the rule of the Sultanate of Sulu, which existed prior to Spanish colonial rule in the 1500s, and the establishment of the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1935. When the last sultan died in 1936, the fledgling Philippine government refused to recognize his heir, effectively eradicating the traditional Bangsamoro power base.

When the Philippines became a republic in 1946, its constitution allowed for the establishment of an autonomous region in Muslim Mindanao. Initially the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) fought alone for this autonomous territory; in 1977, however, MNLF member Hashim Salamat – who had studied in Saudi Arabia – and his followers seceded from the movement and founded the rival MILF.

The Philippine government signed an agreement with the MNLF in January 1987, and territories were added to the resulting Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) through a series of plebiscites or referendums in 1989, 2001, 2002 and 2006.

MILF commanders later laid claim to a further 712 villages outside the ARMM.

Negotiations between the government and the MILF began in earnest in June 2001. Both parties were to formally sign the resulting MOA-AD on Aug. 5, a deal which could have led to the creation of the separate Bangsamoro Juridical Entity, or fully-functioning state, replacing the ARMM by 2010.

When details of the agreement were leaked to the press, however, Christian politicians in regions of Mindanao affected by the agreement appealed to the Supreme Court, which in turn issued a temporary restraining order on the signing of the agreement on Aug. 4.

One such relationship is that of the divine creation and the indications of this that are found in nature. It can be argued that the artists of the early Islamic art movement were trying to portray the perfection of God's creation through the use of geometry and without the use of imagery showing any living beings (reasons for doing this will be discussed in future - or you can nudge me to tell you sooner - any feedback or questions are appreciated). This is a plausible point as symmetry and geometry can be found in nature all around us including our very own bodies.

This then closely relates to the idea of the Golden mean. The ancient Greeks placed much importance on this and here is a quick explanation from wikipedia:

In philosophy, especially that of Aristotle, the golden mean is the desirable middle between two extremes, one of excess and the other of deficiency.

To the Greek mentality, it was an attribute of beauty. Both ancients and moderns realized that "there is a close association in mathematics between beauty and truth."

The Greeks believed there to be three concomitants of beauty: symmetry, proportion, and harmony. This triad of principles infused their life. They were very much attuned to beauty as an object of love and something that was to be imitated and reproduced in their lives, architecture, Paideia and politics. They judged life by this mentality."

Ok so now I've lost track of where I was going with this. I want to quickly mention the Golden ratio also known as Phi. As seen in the image below:

Ok so back to the point - I am going to concentrate on drawing a connection between the ideas presented in the theory of geometry and symmerty in nature, golden mean and ratio, the divine creation and symbolism that can be found in artistic interpretations of these ideas/theories. Am I taking on too much? well considering that I keep coming up with new topics to look into means that at least my thoughts are developing. Lets just hope they are sinking in and remain relevant to my project.
