Here we go...:

Virkelig rare!

last night was rough! nugget, ever the fan of routines, has taken to developing her own late night-waking agenda. i think the wakings might be spurred by nightmares. i'm fairly certain last night's was.

it starts with the wake up and is followed by the insistance that we exit the bed. she then drags me into the kitchen, usually with the request for tea. that's right, i said tea.

sippy cup in hand, she instructs me to sit on the kik-step, saying, "mama! mama! up!" while smacking the stool where i should sit. after a few swigs of tea, she's on to the next task. "mama. up! up!" she bellows while dancing around the kitchen near the cake dome. there are doughnuts under that dome. she knows. she wants them. now. up i pick her and she squeals, "do-duts!"

it's 12:30 or 2:15 or 3:45 am and i don't care what she wants to eat as long as she eats it quickly and we can go back to bed. soon. "mimmie! mimmie!" doduts must be eaten with her minnie mouse fork. i hope it's clean. we find mimmie and put her dodut on a plate. "mama! up!" back on the stool i sit and she eats.

"mama, up!" she runs into tiny apartment's living room and smacks the coffe table. this is where we should finish eating doduts with mimmie. "maaahmuhhh!" she coos lovingly. i thank her, but insist i am really not hungry for doduts at this hour. unacceptable! i pretend to eat bites of dodut.

"mama! mama! up!" she escorts me into tiny apartment's pantry/laundry room. it is time to graze. "hmmmm..." she ponders the many choices on the wire shelves. it's usually some organic, animal-shaped cracker or cookie that she chooses. after a few of those i beg to return to the bedroom.

some nights are better than others. this did not at all go well last night. there was screaming and crying and pleading. i think she was not only afraid of the earlier nightmare, but also had some horrible gas pains that were terrifying her. i finally got her to agree to sleeping on me in her nursing chair. i hope the neighbors got back to sleep quickly.

Sarah tagged me to do this meme, but I'm afraid I'm not very green at all!

What’s the Bible verse/passage that best describes the way you think the world should be?
I don't know if this counts, as it's not a description of particular circumstances in the same way that Sarah's chosen passage (Acts 2:42-47) was, but never mind.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the LORD has annointed me
to preach good news to the poor,
He has sent me to bind-up the broken hearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD's favour
and the day of vengence of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and to provide for those who grieve in Zion -
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise instead of a spririt of despair.

(Isaiah 61:1-3, New International Version)

If I could choose another one, which also doesn't quite fit the bill as the answer to the question, it would be this one (sorry, I know I'm cheating already):

Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

(Colossians 3: 12-14, New International Version)

When was the last time you rode a bicycle?
In 2001/2, not sure when, around the courtyardy bit in front of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. It was my friend's bike and I just rode it to see whether or not I could still ride one, as I hadn't ridden a bike for about 8 years before that.

Have you ever written to an MP or other ‘powers that be’ about a green issue? If so, what was it? If you do this often, what was the last one?
I can't remember whether I have or not. I used to do Superbadger, but alas I stopped writing to people. I'm not really sure why. I was probably feeling defeatist at the time. Bad Bookmouse.

What’s your favourite green product?
Recycled toilet paper!

What’s your favourite source of ‘green’ clothing?
Erm. I don't think I have any green clothing. If I did, it would probably be charity shops. I don't buy many new clothes. Does that help?

What’s your most unusual green handy hint?
I don't think I'm green enough to give anyone green handy hints! If I don't drink all my water I let the plants drink it instead of pouring it down the sink. Erm. We reuse all the Chinese take-away boxes, of which we have far, far too many. I have a compost bin. That's about it, I'm afraid. I don't have a car. I always felt virtuous about this, until I did a survey once about carbon or something and realised the fact that I don't drive doesn't really make that much difference to how environmentally friendly or not I am. Alas.

If you would like to do this meme, please do!

If you’re anything like me, one of your favorite reasons to read is for the story. Not for the character development and interaction. Not because of the descriptive, emotive powers of the writer. Not because of deep, literary meaning hidden beneath layers of metaphor. (Even though those are all good things.) No … it’s because you want to know what happens next?

Or, um, is it just me?

Well, um, it's just you. Lol, well, okay. It isn't me. I myself like the character development. In fact, I am so not into the story that I will almost always read the last two chapters (or more!) of a book first, even mysteries. I love to know where the characters end up, and then watch the way the author gets them there. A good story line doesn't draw me in nearly as well as good characters.

As an example, I recently read Quilt as Desired by Arlene Sachitano. The storyline was okay, somewhat contrived and predictable. The author is obviously new on the scene - way too much side material and underdeveloped themes and references. But her character development was good; she created interesting, believable characters (for the most part). I was left, by the end of the book, with a desire to know even more about these people in this world that Mrs. Sachitano had created. That is a true sign of good character development. In spite of the fact that the storyline wasn't all that great, I would read the next book in the series.

So, as for me, I'm definitely into the characters. The story is simply the characters played out.

Ten Years Ago: I was 12. I was starting to figure out that I would never live up to the expectations

Ten Years Ago: I was 12. I was starting to figure out that I would never live up to the expectations of my teachers and parents and decided it was easier if I just did my own thing and ignored all of them. It was the beginning of many detentions and groundings.

I wanted to be: A dancer. My mom had made me quit ballet to make time for Chinese tuition when I was 8 'until my Chinese showed improvement'. She finally realised it was never going to happen so she enrolled me back into ballet classes. I wanted to join a ballet school somewhere and train to be a professional dancer. My mom's family nearly had multiple cardiac arrests because dancing wasn't 'respectable'.

Five Years Ago: I was 17. It was the year of freedom because I was finally done with my 'O' Levels and I was going to college. Which meant that the threat of my parents making me move to China with them was finally over since unlike international schools, there was no college in China who would take me.

I wanted to be: A writer or a pastry chef. Well, I had to pick a college to go to. So it was either the UOL BA English program or I could take a Diploma at the culinary school. Of course, common sense (and a fear of needles, do you have any idea how many vaccinations you need just to attend culinary school?) ultimately prevailed and I went to University.

Now: I am 22. The year of moving and stress.

I am: An accounts executive. Also, taking part in the Mentor Access Project writing poetry. Cooking up a storm in my kitchen and most of all, an expatriate again. If anyone asks me now, I'll tell them that there is no way to escape the curse of being an expatriate kid. Once you're in the lifestyle, you're in it, better get ready to be moving around all your life.

In Five Years: I will be 27. And strangely enough, it doesn't sound very old to me.

I Want to Be: Co-Owner of a fashion label. Owner of my own green energy consultation firm or at least some kind of consultation firm. At least a Master's degree holder. Own a house somewhere. Settle down in one country (NOT Singapore) and STAY THERE for at least 3/4 of the year.

In Ten Years: I will be 32. Would I care? Erm, not really.

I Want to Be: Sane. Living in one country full time. Working on a PhD. Owner of at least one very successful business. A workaholic. (AHEM! Niblet, kindly take note) Spoiling my nieces and nephews completely rotten.

In Twenty Years: I will be 42.

I Want to Be: A workaholic. A published poet. A PhD holder. Maybe by then, we'll be ready to be parents and adopt a kid. Not having a mid-life crisis.

If I were currently employed, this weekend would have more significance. But since my husband is employed and I actually haven't really spent any q-time with him in like two weeks, I'm pretty happy we have three days together. Alone.

We've planned a trip to the Farmer's Market. I'll be making vegetarian stuffed peppers for my cousin and her husband tomorrow. Then there will likely be some Rock Band. And I'll get all swoon-y and happy because I think it's hot when he plays the guitar. Then I'll probably sing. I'm not good. But I have an incredible ear for mimicry. So that tends to impress him. Hopefully, the sun will shine so we'll get to swim one last weekend in the outdoor pool. And I'm sure there will be ice cream involved somewhere.

Its been raining for two days, and I've done nothing of consequence. So until I do all those things mentioned above and subsequently write about them, please be satisfied that I've answered James Lipton's Proust Questionnaire as if I'm Inside the Actor's Studio.

One of the Longwood Gardens cats. Might be Paulie but I'm not sure. Certainly at home amidst the visitors. Struck out today in terms of a Pickle cat photo. Rain, no light and Pickle cat just wanted sleep this morning when there was fair light. Not a total loss today though as I got a ton of things off my plate. Good things for me and the cat! I'll fill you in next week.

Welcome to Feline and Furball Friday!

Sorry about the late evening update, on with the cats and dogs! Last time we saw cat Kenz perched in a tree watching the world go by. Karen kept us up to date on the continuing adventures of Cayenne and Pepper! The damage is starting to add up as Cayenne destroyed a lamp. Training is ongoing. A great bunch of cats and dogs!

Drop off your links for next week. No time lines, just by next Friday. Show off your feline or furball for Friday cause it’s the day for those pets!

—

Of the top six stories on Yahoo, four are about Sarah Palin; the fifth was about the Obama camp's reaction to Sarah Palin; and the last one was comparing Obama to Sarah Palin. The McCain camp has wrapped the news cycle around its little finger. It's impressive.

Speaking as a moderate who is still sold on the Obama-Biden ticket, there's a lot to appreciate about Sarah Palin, on top of the fact that she brings let's-break-a-glass-ceiling mojo to Old Man McWhiteguy's ticket. Here, have some thoughtful analysis.

According to Young King Ours, the Hellsing manga is about to end.

I'm torn. I do want to see the series finish (not because I'm tired of it, of course, but because the alternative—in which it jumps the shark and limps on, worn-out and tired, for decades— is worse). On the other hand, it doesn't seem like there'll be enough time to wrap up all the loose ends Hirano has left, even with more of The Dawn still to come.

That said: readers of Shine, prepare yourselves for Plot.

I am… a woman, a girl, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a mother, … me.

I think… too much. I have constant scenarios wafting though my head. Stories, worries, concerns, wishes, ideas, dreams.

I know… absolutely nothing. There is the old saying that the older you get the less you know. I believe that to be true, because the more I learn the more questions I have.

I have… the most amazing daughter, and with her, the most amazing life.

I wish… for more. Mostly strength.

I hate… the word hate. There is nothing that I hate. I certainly have an entire list of things that I dislike, but I don’t hate.

I miss… the happy moments of life. I miss old friends. I miss my mom, who is still with us, but is not the same. I miss everything that is worth missing.

I fear… that I will make too many mistakes with my daughter. That I will fail her.

I hear… cicadas. I hear the amazing world around me. I hear my daughters voice, either non-stop talking or singing. I hear life.

I smell… coffee, fresh air, onions frying, and I smell all the wonderful scents that evoke marvellous memories.

I crave… the love of a good man.

I search… for myself and for my dreams.

I wonder… if I will ever stop dreaming. If I will ever feel that I have it all.

I regret… many things, but I try not to look backwards. I am who I am today because of the regrets of my life.

I love… babies, children, women, men, animals, life.

I ache… for arms to hold me.

I am not… alone, but the loneliness of my life can be overwhelming.

I believe… in karma … ‘nuf said. I also believe in dreams.

I dance… with joy when I am with my daughter, watching her, or listening to her.

I sing… in my heart when I realize just how lucky I am.

I cry… rarely now. When I do cry, it consumes me and aches my heart.

I fight… the urge to scream at myself.

I win… at life. Good or bad it’s mine, and it is amazing even with it’s empty spaces.

I lose… heart when I think about spending my life alone.

I never… want to hurt anyone.

I always… see the strengths in others, but the weaknesses in myself. I hope to learn to see my strengths.

I confuse… myself sometimes.

I listen… to all the sounds around me, wishing for more silence and peace.

I can usually be found… in my head.

I am scared… of being scared.

I need… very little, but I do wish and dream for more.

I am happy about… most things in my life. The things that are lacking are not so huge that it changes the way I live my life.

I imagine… having my dreams fulfilled.

…

I dream… of loving, living, writing, creating, providing, giving, doing, and so much more.
