Amazingly, some people still use OS X 10.3, and a couple are whining because of last Thursday's announcement. I don't know why they expect Panther support when pretty much every piece of software for OS X released in the last couple years or so requires 10.4, if not 10.5. Not to mention the fact that Panther users make up a quarter of a percent of logins.
At least Windows 2000 is still supported ;)

Today, I came across one of the coolest apps I have found so far in the iTunes App Store. It's a VNC client called Mocha VNC Lite, and it allows you to control your computer from your iPhone or iPod Touch.

If your using a Mac, this is really easy to set up. Just enable Screen Sharing on your Mac, then with VNC Lite on your iPhone or iPod Touch connect using your IP Address or Computer Name, and enter the password. If your using Windows, you will first need to install a VNC server on your PC.

Here are couple of screenshots:[gallery]

I am sure some of you will have heard of Psystar. They started selling OS X machines earlier in the year.

Claims - broken copyright and trademarks, also violating unfair competition rules. The EULA disallows people to modify OS X, and selling it pre-installed. Especially relevant since they obviously needed to patch it.

To quote -

"As alleged more fully below, by misappropriating Apple's proprietary software and intellectual property for its own use, Psystar's actions harm consumers by selling to them a poor product that is advertised and promoted in a manner that falsely and unfairly implies an affiliation with Apple,"

"Psystar's actions also have caused, and are causing, harm to Apple and constitute a misuse of Apple's intellectual property,"

I highly doubt anyone will try to sell these computers in future, if Apple wins. If it loses, then the market will almost certainly become a free-for-all. I wonder if Psystar bought the licenses? If they didn't, then the result will be obvious.

If you have recently upgraded to 2.0 from a jailbroken iPhone and miss Capture, the app that let you take screen shots of your iPhone, then you'll like this little trick.

Press the Home button and the Power button at the same time (just click them down and release, don't hold them down or you'll restart your iPhone) the screen will flash white and then return to normal.

If you have an iPhone the screen caps will appear in your camera roll, if you are like me and tried this on an iPod Touch you'll have to connect your iPod to your Mac (or PC) which will automatically open iPhoto and prompt you to import new photos.

Thanks to Andy Ihnatko for discovery this little trick.

[UPDATE] Actually if you do this on an iPod Touch the pictures will appear in the Photos app that came with your iPod.

Don't look at me like that, I KNOW this should be a no-brainer. But I've just spent 30 minutes on the phone to Apple Care technical support, with a man paid to be confused about this sort of thing, as he flipped through pages and pages of "so your caller appears to have found something which is fundamentally broken with our OS" help-me files, so you can rest assured it's not just me having a blond moment (even though I'm naturally brown haired). LOL, you said 'having a blond'

The problem is to do with auto-fill - a feature of OS X which is another of those features that, when you first come across it, reminds you why you love Mac - but which you never bother to figure out how to use or adjust and so are completely in the dark about when it behaves unexpectedly.

Auto-fill remembers information like your postal address, mobile number and email address so that, when you fill in a form on, say, amazon.co.uk, all you have to do to automatically enter all your details is hold down Command + Shift + A and Safari will securely paste your info into the form fields for you.

The e-mail address part was the sticking point for me, because having recently done a complete erase re-install of Leopard, I was at a complete loss as to how OS X had managed to retain any of my personal information - when I was registering an install of Photoshop and the "click here" box already 'knew' my email address (which was actually incorrect).

I hunted high and low on every Mac help forum there is and no one seemed to have encountered the problem before - it was as if I was the only Mac user in the world who didn't know how to change the default system wide e-mail address.

Here's how it's done..

Open Safari and open preferences.
Click 'AutoFill' and next to 'Using info from my Address book card', click 'Edit'.
Your own V-card will open in Address book.
Change your details and quit Address book.

Sounds simple, right? And it is - and I feel really dumb for not knowing already how it's done - but hey - it's just reminder that even we hardened Mac heads sometimes need a refresher on the basics.

Just look at those headlines. If that isn't a PR nightmare for Apple, I don't know what is. This after they did such a super job before the iPhone 3G was announced.

Fortune talked about the perils of "event marketing" - how, yeah, a big huge event like this is fun and draws attention, it's catastrophic when something breaks down. As it did on Friday. Apple is an expert at drawing press attention. That only makes the scrutiny laser beam that much hotter.

Despite everything that happened, it could've been worse. But I'm starting to wonder how. Just from personal experience, this week has been a bummer with my Apple gear. First, I updated my Airport Express base station's firmware. Afterward, the thing crashed, and now I can't use my external USB hard drive.

The update must have damaged my USB drive somehow, because I had to repair the thing in Disk Utility and now iPhoto crashes every time it tries to load my library from the disk. Even worse: my iBook and Airport Utility won't even recognize the base station:

So much for a helpful "update."

Then, after I thought MobileMe was actually giving me a chance to try it out (I set up my account, and could log in online), I find out that OS X 10.4 has issues connecting with MobileMe. In fact, the .Mac icons won't even change over:

Just when it looks like MobileMe (or .Mac, or .Whatever) is going to sync my contacts and calendars and whatnot, I get this:

At least this is just the 60 day trial. If I were paying for this, I would not be a happy Apple customer.

And that's just it. Even amidst Friday's hellbroth during the iPhone 3G launch, I still played the dedicated Apple soldier. Most of the folks in line with me understood, too, that these things happen, and we were still a part of Something Special. But when the nuts of bolts of Apple's operation start to come undone, that's when you get people angry. People will stand in line for hours for the iPhone, no matter what activation issues are taking place, with a gritted smile on their face. That smile soon disappears, however, when basic things like Airport and "Exchange for the rest of us" (more like, "for the most patient of us") start breaking down.

Apple has got a mess on its hands, it seems, and I wouldn't want to be their PR department for the next week or so. The least they should do is offer some sort of apology, admit their mistakes, and fix their damn software. Those are the basics.

Do that, and we might forget our USB drive crashing through Airport Disk Utility. Might.

While Apple is the famously fruity iPod and Mac company, a small upstart named Psystar has sought to steal a small amount of Apple's thunder by producing clones of the famous Apple computers. Psystar took advantage of Apple's recent conversion of all of its personal computers to use Intel microprocessors, the same microprocessors at the heart of ordinary PC's, to make clones that (mostly) run Apple's OS X software operating system. Of course, Psystar is not doing this out of benevolence, as its website proclaims:

Why spend $1999 to get the least expensive Apple computer with a decent video card when you can pay less than a fourth of that for an equivalent sleek and small form-factor desktop with the same hardware[?]

Psystar seeks to charge a markup on generic PC hardware with a specially modified version of Apple's software that will run on a normal PC (OS X normally refuses to load on anything but Apple hardware). Apple has responded with a law suit alleging, among other things, that Psystar violated the copyrights on OS X.

Apple's complaint has apparently not been published as of this post, but Psystar is likely not accused of outright piracy, because it does purchase a copy of Apple's software for each computer it distributes. Rather, Psystar is most likely charged with distributing an unauthorized derivative work. Apple's OS X (like all software) is protected under copyright, and when Psystar took steps to "hack" (modify) the software to run on generic PC's, it likely created a new derivative work that it is now re-selling. Without Apple's permission, this too may violate copyright law.

While Psystar may attempt to argue doctrine of first sale (which generally does not apply to software) it stands little chance of success in court. Aside from the doctrine of first sale, Psystar might attempt to fall back on a "fair use" defense arguing that even though it infringes Apple's copyright, that the infringement should be allowed. However, Psystar is modifying OS X with practically zero transformative purpose other than to disable Apple's own software protections, adding nothing of creative value, and it is then reselling the software in an effort to undercut Apple's own business model (which centers around hardware sales, not software sales). While Psystar may craft press releases full of heady bluster, expect Apple's legal department to take the wind out of its sails very soon.

So its not the slimmest or most elegant piece of kit in the world, but it plays music (thats why we all wanted these things in the first place, right?), videos and has more than enough storage.

Great.

Problem is, I'm also a fairly dedicated Mac user. I have a Macbook running Leopard. I didn't really think about it and assumed there wouldn't be any problems. The naivity of youth. Are these compatible? Does the Pope shit in the woods?

No, no he doesn't.

What would be really nice would be for Creative to release a handy little iTunes plugin for the Zen series, to introduce all of the integration and flexibility of the iPod to this platform.

Ahahahahahaha. But seriously. It is a little annoying.

So yes, I have reluctantly dual booted XP for those essential windows tasks, this seemingly one of them. But wait, help is at hand. Enter Richard Low, saviour of the meek. In terms of platform compatibility issues anyway. His open source XNJB application really does a good job of getting audio on and off your mp3 player. Videos and pictures are a bit hit and miss* but in essence, I can't fault it.

Head over to his page to download it.

*As far as I know. I haven't looked into it in detail because I don't really feel the urge to watch films on a 2.5" screen. But if you really can't bear to be separated from your tiny TFT porn, use the Windows apps.

In OS X Leopard, we have something called a "stack". Basically, this is just a quick, accessible way to specific folders in the dock. Within this there are a couple view options including a list or grid. In the grid view, you are greeted with a plethora of chaotic info thrown at you (assuming you have a large amount of files in that folder) and its hard to find the exact thing you want.

Apple has included a highlight feature that works when you use either the arrow keys or press command and the letter the item begins with. To turn on this feature permanently to use with your mouse, all that is required is to open up the OS X Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) and type the following italic words: (note they are two separate lines)

defaults write com.apple.dock mouse-over-hilte-stack -boolean yes

killall Dock

That’s all there is to it. Check out your stacks and see the newly-added highlight feature in grid view.

To undo this feature just type the same commands as above in the terminal and replace "yes" with "no"

Apple can be seen as, without a doubt, a rising power in the computer industry. It was found recently at two survey firms, Gartner and IDC, that the manufacturer has risen to the number three spot on the list of U.S. computer manufacturers following number one, Dell and number two, HP. This comes as no surprise after the product releases we have seen in recent months. At this year's Macworld Expo fans saw the release of a new generation of Macbooks, Macbook Pros, iMacs and, of course, the industry shocker, 'Macbook Air'. Along with these new products came the new and improved OS X Operating System, code-named 'Leopard'. Also, in the last week Apple released the world renouned iPhone 3G and took in over 300 Million Dollars in sales in just three days. One could also claim the release of Microsoft's problematic upgraded OS Windows Vista as a reason for the rise of the Mac. The rise of Apple could be a warning sign that Microsoft needs to improve their products. While Apple releases new products every year Windows Vista was Microsoft's first major product release in nearly eight years. If Microsoft wants to keep up with Apple it will need create some new ideas instead of following Apple, such as with the release of the Zune after Apple already released the 5th generation iPod. The most successful companies create new products, not tag along behind. I have high hopes for the software giant while enjoying Apple's winning streak.

Before I forget, I really need to consolidate my music library. Right now I have three different music libraries sitting on a desktop, my macbook, and on an external hard drive. Most of this music, I will never hear again in my life. Some of it I want to keep just in case I'm in the mood. The rest I want to listen to it all the time. I don't want to lose my iTunes ratings and album covers! Hopefully I'll learn how to do this soon and post it right here.

I work for an email service provider, and our development platform is Java and Flex. Our development machines are Macs. I have a really nice 2.8Ghz 24" iMac with 4GB of memory. The company just bought us all OS X Leopard, so I decided to do the install this morning. A couple of my co-workers have already done the install, with mixed results. One seemed to have performance issues after upgrading. Another one did a complete wipe of his machine with a brand new install, as opposed to upgrading. His worked nicely. My boss upgraded his notebook, and gained some performance boosts. So, with all these mixed results, I was a little hesitant to upgrade mine. But, I took the plunge.

I'm happy to say that, so far, things look good. The install took a little over an hour. It would have been less if I realized I could skip the DVD consistency check prior to the install. But, for some dumb reason, I didn't see the "Skip" button on that window. The upgrade was smooth, and when the system came back up, everything looks pretty much as it should.

I'm literally just 15 minutes into using Leopard, so I have nothing really to report, good or bad, except that my experience with the upgrade process was flawless. One minor thing to note is that the installer will install all the printer drivers. This takes up a whopping 1.6GB of hard drive space. If you're low on space, you can limit the install significantly. I think it was the EPSON drivers that took up the most (769MB). I installed all of them 'cause I have plenty of space to spare. You might choose differently.

So I was checking my log, and noticed Tux Machines had put me in their leftovers list:

(BTW, thank you Tux Machines, you guys are awesome)

But in the list I noticed CNET's "The Open Road" comparing operating systems to houses, and couldn't help myself from redoing the Windows one:

Mine:

You paid a lot of money for it, the contractor says you'll get a great house, he then subcontracts to a group of fly by nights (in my case, Gateway) who build it using the cheapest materials they can get away with.

Once you move in, you notice there's a roach infestation, you call the exterminator, but they leave for a while and keep coming back, so you have to pay a recurring fee to keep getting rid of them.

While thats going on, you notice that your kitchen (RAM) isn't as big as they said it would be, they had to shave 25% of it even though you paid for it, so it would be backwards compatible with all their other houses.

You try to ignore this and move on, but then the roof caves in (motherboard failure), you get a repair man out and he fixes it, but then when you come back home from work the next night, the house has locked you out and there's a note from the builders that said in fixing the house's components, you have built a new house, thus violating the license agreement, and therefore you must buy a new house.

Ok I’ve had my Black Macbook for about 2 months now, and I love it. So here’s my list

Ok I've had my Black Macbook for about 2 months now, and I love it. So here's my list of my favorite apps other than the included apps from Apple. They are in no particular order. A lot of these are free, or shareware.

1. VMWare Fusion: A great way to run your Windows apps on Mac.

VMWare Fusion, is similar to the Virtual Machines used in their VM's on Linux and Windows. What's so special about Fusion? You can enter "Unity" mode and the Windows of Linux Desktop is hidden, yet you can run the guest system's apps with a native look! For an example start up Internet Explorer, and it looks like any other window running on your Mac.

This is a nice alternative to Boot Camp... There's no need to reboot!

Price: $79 (Search for the Beta Version and get it for free)

2. Anxiety: A quick and dirty "Getting Things Done" application.

If you are are fan of the GTD philosophy I find this to be a nice quick way to enter tasks. Most of the other GTD apps I've tried are beyond bloated, or have a steep learning curve. This one is simple and easy to use.

Price: Free

3. Quicksilver: Keyboard shortcuts; quick launch and so much more... A must have app. Will change your whole computer experience if you exploit all of its features.

This is my favorite piece of software, like I said before it changes the your whole experience using the computer. What's so great about it you say? How about starting an app in a few swift keystrokes? How about easily finding music in your iTunes library? Looking up contacts in no time flat. Sending off a quick email, I can go on and on and on.... Install it and play away, become one with your Mac.

Price: Free

4. DeliciousSafari: A plugin for the Safari browser for the del.icio.us bookmark manager. Not as nice as the Firefox extension, but if you prefer Safari it's a must have.

Price: Nagware, $10 to get rid of the nag pop up...

5. MacVim: A native Mac interface to my favorite editor ever. Not for the faint at heart or highly impatient... Once you become proficient at Vim it's like a moment of Zen... I would say you will be at least 4 times as efficient...

Price: Free (open-source)

6. Transmit: A fabulous FTP client.

Price: $29.95 and well worth it.

7. Cyberduck: Another full featured FTP client, and unlike Transmit it's free!

Price: Free

8. Senuti: Import music off of your iPod to your Mac. This should be a feature of iTunes but it's not. This is the best of the numerous import apps I tried. Will also import from a Windows formated iPod.

Price: Free

9. Growl: A notification manager. Works with most apps. Nice notifications when a file finishes uploading, or a new track starts on iTunes.

Price: Free

10. WebnoteHappy: Ok the name is lame but it's a cool app to cruise and edit del.icio.us tags.

Price: Free

11. Mythfrontend: If you are running a MythTV server this is a must have, and it works with the Apple Remote.

Price: Free (open-source)

12. VLC

Price: Free

13. NetNewsWire: Great RSS Reader. The best RSS reader out there. A must have.

Price: Free

14: Coda: HTML editor suite. The most expensive app on the list but well worth it. Everything is intergrated, editor, FTP client, Terminal. For those of us you still love hand coding HTML, CSS, etc..

Price: $79

15. JollysFastVNC: VNC viewer. Leopard has one built in, but I prefer this for the amount of options.

Price: Free

16. Isolator: Nice little app that blacks-out all other windows on your Desktop except the one in focus. Great for trying to keep your focus on one task...

17. Insomniac: Run your Macbook with the Lid closed, without having a keyboard and mouse attached. Great for running as a media server or connecting via VNC.

Price: Free

Right umm well currently I am working on a OS X (leopard only) Talking Book player. its still in the early stages of development but you can now open Daisy 2002 and 2005 spec books and play them with full level navigation.

Its written in Objective-C and Cocoa as a framework so hopefully this should make it more usable in other projects. The gui is part of the project and I will look at separating them later.

It is open source under GPL V3.

You can find the project link in the sidebar

the source is not yet available but will be soon.

If anybody is interested I would like to hear about it.

1. Have a broadband connection:

I agree totally, most dial up modems are controllerless, meaning that they don't have an onboard digital signal processor, which means that it's unlikely that any Linux will support your modem, it happens, but for the most part, I wouldn't even want to use the internet without broadband, if I didn't have broadband, I would get rid of the computer, stop paying for the internet, and walk to the library to get my emails.

In fact, I *really* wish PC makers would quit putting dial up modems in, because it just means that you have to pull them out later to make room for a wifi card.

There are internet fax services, so you don't even need a modem for those anymore anyway.

Ethernet is almost always guaranteed in Linux, and wifi can always be made to work with minimal effort, if it doesn't work to begin with, WPA support is there no matter what you use and this makes your network *very* secure, why a user would go out and buy new hardware just for WPA 2 (or even care that WPA 2 exists) is beyond me, any router or wifi chipset that does WPA 2 can fall back to WPA if it needs to, and it doesn't really make you any less secure.

What you want to avoid is WEP, which was deprecated but still supported on most wireless equipment, WEP is very week, and any 12 year old with a copy of Aircrack can break into your network in well under a minute.

I use one Intel wifi chipset, two Broadcom BCM4318's, and a Ralink 2560, they *all* have native Linux drivers, but the broadcom needs you to download the Windows driver and cut the firmware micro code out of it with b43-fwcutter, it takes about 2 minutes and a reboot. All of these chips support WPA and WPA2.

2. Need video drivers and multimedia codecs:

If you live in any civilized country, Ubuntu actually helps you break the law and continue using proprietary formats, without even telling you about the moral implications or legal ones of doing so.

I don't have a problem with *doing* this, hell, I use the same packages from Livna (an extras repo for Fedora that includes legally encumbered stuff), but Fedora stongly encourages you to use unpatented formats like Ogg Vorbis and Theora, which I do, they replace mp3, AAC, MPEG 2 or 4, DIVX, whatever completely, the problem is the assholes people on Windows and Mac that are morons ignorant, or fanboys don't know better alternatives exist.

In other words, I can choose the formats I encode, not the ones I get, I don't agree with the way proprietary companies keep YOUR data in handcuffs to keep YOU handcuffed to their products, if I liked that I would use Windows or Mac.

So essentially, Ubuntu is breaking the law and passing out non-free crap with a one click installer, makes no good attempt to tell the user why having this can be a bad thing, and no option to just choose the parts you absolutely need, I noticed that the user ends up with Microsoft fonts even though Red Hat made Liberation Fonts (metric equivelents) freely available, it passes out Sun Java, even though Red Hat's Iced Tea project is completely Java compatible, and even gstreamer plugins for audio formats that are not widely used.

The reason they don't just include this is because some people object to having it there, people like me have no need for more than half of it...it's some good old fashioned horse trading on the part of Mark Shuttleworth, and it's on the same moral level of Bram Cohen popularizing BitTorrent by seeding pornography, this one click proprietary crap installer is the difference between an OS that is basically liberated, and an OS that you really had no reason to switch to looking for freedom. (Just like Linspire, only you aren't forced to pay for it.....yet, though I imagine Ubuntu users will run for the hills when Shuttleworth gets tired of dumping Ubuntu and actually expects to start seeing the moolah)

Nvidia drivers, I use those, I'm not happy about relying on an invasive driver that replaces a third of my X Server with undocumented crap that may or may not work, but until ATI gets a good free/libre 3d driver, and believe you me, they are very close (My laptop runs with that driver and even does Compiz Fusion and some video gaming), I will ditch Nvidia and avoid them like the plague, again, if you *need* it, Livna is right over meh.

But Pirillo is wrong about needing the machine hooked up to the internet while installing, it's perfectly possible to download the DEB (Ubuntu) or RPM (Most distros that are not Ubuntu) installers and save them on a thumb drive or a CD, and after that, you can have a system that never ever connects to the web, Linux distributions are not necessarily anchored to an internet connection, despite how Pirillo makes it sound, it's just much more convenient to have a connection and the repository set up, and the process can be surprisingly point and drool with most any distribution.

At the risk of angering the *some* Linux users that like Richard Stallman, if the Free Software Foundation's list of drivers that Linux includes is maintained as poorly as most of the projects they work on (They have a good compiler collection and C libraries), it's as good as worthless and the kernel is years ahead of the FSF's list, and since every kernel driver is a module, your distribution may very well support lots more, or they may have even removed some, the only way to know is to build a kernel yourself, install driver RPMs, or fall back to make and make install to build and install a module provided you have source code, failing that Fedora is often times a year ahead of Ubuntu, as far as devices that work out of the box.

I should note that suspend and hibernate (ACPI) have *never* worked right in Ubuntu, on any system I've had it on, but have never had a problem with Fedora.

If there's something to be said for FreeBSD, at least they don't have Stallman coming up to them and telling them they need to rename their OS.

Yes, I'll have Fedora GNU X GNOME PERL PYTHON OPENJDK SGI IBM blahblahblah so on so forth LINUX.

(It's Linux, now zip it!)

As far as a network bridge....why do it?

I mean, as far as that goes, anything that plugs into a working ethernet port will work in any OS that has drivers for the ethernet port, but maybe that section should have been labelled "If you're too much of an idiot to get your wifi to work, buying a $70 router to use as an overglorified antenna will work".

3. Games:

There are a lot of free games.

Many games will work in Wine.

DirectX 10 is bullshit, and as long as Windows XP has 80+% of the Windows market, most games that aren't built by Microsoft, that you played and beat on XBOX in 2004 *cough*Halo 2*cough*Halo 2 XP patch*cough* are still made with DirectX 9, there's also no reason why a DirectX 10 game can't fall back to DirectX 9 shader model *cough*Crysis*cough*

Most of what holds Linux gaming in Wine back is the SecuROM or StarFORCE copy protection virus/rootkits that of course Linux does not allow to fuck with it (even if they were written for Linux, SELinux or AppArmor would likely stop them, even if you had given them root access)

I play dozens of games (Command and Conquer series, World of Warcraft, Ultima Online, anything from id Software, Sauerbraten, Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Morrowind, etc.) just fine, although Bethesda is using SecuROM 6 on Oblivion Game of the Year, don't buy it.

DirectX 9 has been pretty much independently implemented, and if you need Microsoft's version, you can install the redistributable under Wine and then run overrides for any files you need them on.

Pirillo also mentions ActiveX in gaming, ActiveX is a Microsoft plugin architecture for Internet Explorer that has nothing to do with gaming (but lots to do with allowing viruses to automatically install in Windows when you visit the wrong sort of website in Internet Explorer)

4. Printers, scanners, copiers, doodads.

www.linuxcompatible.org

This site will give you a good idea, the one good piece of advice from Pirillo thus far.

I can speak from experience, BUY HP PRINTERS, preferably and all in one because that way you can bet on it working, other models, I don't know, I do know that Lexmark makes shitty printers anyway, and that a lot of them (including some branded Dell) don't work at all.

And let me say that Dell's Ubuntu models are a ripoff and don't even have any good hardware you can choose from, if you want to get a good system that you know supports Ubuntu, get a System 76, I won't post a link cause I don't want any accusations of me trying to get a cut of anything, look em up, or build your own PC, most people starting out in Linux just convert an existing Windows box, so make sure everything (except accelerated video) works on the Live CD before installing to your disk. (Print a test page from your printer too)

So what distribution is right?

Well, for me it's Fedora, for you it may be Ubuntu, or Sabayon, or Mandriva, or even FreeBSD (Not Linux, but based on the UNIX design as well).

www.distrowatch.com

Remember, just cause a lot of people use something, doesn't mean it's the best, for you.

If you need any help, my chatrooms are #fedora or #tenforward on irc.ipocalypse.net/6667, if you need an IRC chat client, and are on Windows, I recommend Silverex's build of Xchat.
