THE HAGUE, The Netherlands — Having run the polite-but-grim gauntlet of Dutch government security to gain access to Geert Wilders, I finally understood what the 24-hour security requirements of the man's continued existence really mean: To make the survival of Western-style liberty in the Netherlands his political cause, this Dutch parliamentarian has to live under high-tech lock and key.

This stunning paradox, with no end in sight, illustrates how far political freedom in the West has already eroded. Think of it: For writing about the repressive ideology of Islam, for arguing against the inequities of Sharia (Islamic law), for making a video ("Fitna”) to warn about Islamic jihad, Wilders lives in his own non-Islamic country under a specifically Islamic death threat.

If it is politically incorrect to notice this, it is also indisputably true. True, too, is that, sans state security, this death threat could conceivably be carried out anytime, anywhere — from the picturesque streets outside the Dutch parliament, to the house Wilders hasn't slept in since 2004. That, of course, was when, on an Amsterdam street, a Muslim assassin plunged a knife into Theo van Gogh's corpse, thus attaching the Islamic manifesto threatening both Wilders and his then-parliamentary colleague, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, with death.

Not long ago, political debate in the Netherlands met with, well, more political debate. Now, however, with a growing Muslim minority — and it's politically incorrect to notice this, too — political debate sometimes meets with Islam-inspired political assassination. At least it has, traumatically, twice in recent years: once, with the 2002 murder of the anti-Islamic-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn by an animal rights activist who claimed Fortuyn was scapegoating Muslims; and the following year with the ritualistic Islamic murder of Van Gogh, director of "Submission,” a short video made with Hirsi Ali about Islamic mistreatment of women. In all, such Islam-inspired violence has been enough to chill Islam-inspired debate.

And that's just the situation at home. This week, even as Amsterdam's chief public prosecutor, Leo de Wit, announced that no charges would be brought against Wilders for "discrimination” or "incitement to hatred” related to Wilders' writings or video, Jordan announced it is bringing a "Fitna”-related criminal case against the Dutch parliamentarian.

In other words, Jordan will indict a Dutch politician according to Jordanian (read: Islam-inspired) law. "Jordanian authorities are not aiming to arrest” the Dutch leader of the Freedom Party, Radio Netherlands Online reports. "They say the decision to prosecute was taken in order to send a signal to the Netherlands.”

A "signal”? How about a gag? Of course, like other Western peoples, the Dutch seem content to censor themselves, happily mouthing multicultural platitudes that effectively rationalize their own culture's Islamization. Not Wilders.

I recently asked the 44-year-old Dutchman what was stronger in his country: Islam or multiculturalism.

"Unfortunately, they are both strong,” he replied, seated in his lightly furnished but heavily guarded office. "But cultural relativism is the biggest problem.” He went on to explain: "Multicultural society would not be that bad — I don't really believe in it — but it would not be that bad if, at least, we would be strong enough to say that our culture is better and dominant. But when you combine multicultural society with a dominant sense of cultural relativism, you are heading in the wrong direction. You are committing suicide when it comes to your own culture.”

Hoping to preserve the primacy of Western culture in this Dutch corner of the West, Wilders advocates a halt to Islamic immigration. "I'm not saying that every Muslim in the Netherlands is a criminal or a terrorist,” he explains. "We know the majority is not. Still,” he continues, "there is good reason to stop the immigration, because the more we have an influx of Muslims in the Netherlands, the strength of the (Islamic) culture will grow, and the change of our societies will increase.” He sees his efforts as "a fight against an ideology that I believe at the end of the day will kill our freedom, kill our societies and change everything we stand for.”

He's right — and, yes, it's politically incorrect to say that, too. Everything the West stands for, starting with freedom of speech, is already changing as our institutions, up to and including, for example, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, increasingly proscribe critical references, or indeed, any references to Islam. While it's clear that the European manifestation of Islamic ideology has already killed Wilders' personal freedom in the Netherlands, the general impact on freedom throughout the West has yet to be fully appreciated.

"I have a mission,” Wilders said. "I believe very strongly in what I say, and my party fortunately shares this view. And nobody in the Netherlands is doing (what I do). And somebody should. And I pay a high price for it.”

What is the expression — freedom isn't free? This is literally and acutely the case when it comes to this heroic Dutchman.

And therein lies the catch. The late, great Dutch Social Democrat leader Joop den Uyl once famously said that 'the margins are narrow', meaning that there wasn't much at all he could change; there isn't that much room to manoeuvre in politics. Once you're running the show, you'll discover that it's a game of compromises, leaving behind a seriously watered-down version of your big promises.  That is especially true in a multi-party democracy where a clean one-party majority is practically impossible, but let's not fool ourselves into believing that a President of the United States or a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom have unlimited possibilities. Their compromises are forced upon them by huge, internally not very homogenous party machineries - and by special interest groups of course.

Especially for populists this is a highly vulnerable position to be in. Another famous Dutch politician, Pim Fortuyn, murdered in 2002 right before the elections, said: "I say what I think and I do what I say." That may well be every populist's motto. Of course, he couldn't possibly have done exactly what he said and he knew that. But straight talk is what the people want to hear instead of the double talk from Washington, London, The Hague or Rome. However, once you're in, straight talk is out. Populism therefore, in the long run, is doomed to fail - even the greatest populist of our times, new Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi, talked about unpopular measures that were necessary - after he bagged the election, of course.

So where does our love affair with change in politics come from? Surely it's a good thing to clean out some offices here and there every four or eight years - but at the end of the day that doesn't change much at all. You need a revolution to really change things, and there aren't many voters in the Western world prepared to vote for anything revolutionary. And so it's not really about great, sweeping changes.

Let's look at Sen. Obama. He may be able to push his country into a slightly different direction, but after four or eight years people will call for - you've guessed it - change, thereby effectively robbing the man and his party of any possibility to really make a difference. The country then gets nudged back in the other direction and in the long run that makes for a pretty stable and above all unchanging course. Which leads to the conclusion that our desire for change breeds the opposite.

In unserer Disneyland-Version von Multikulturalismus ist es Häresie, aber die Europäer verstehen allmählich, dass Gemeinschaften von Einwanderern Brutstätten der Intoleranz sein können.

Nichts verdeutlicht die Lage besser, als eine Waffe an Ihrem Kopf.

Die Waffe befand sich in diesem Fall in den Händen eines jungen Arabers. Der Kopf war meiner. Und die Lage sieht so aus, dass Bedenken über Einwanderung in Europa nicht nur das Ergebnis von weißem Rassismus sind, sondern dass sie in vielen Fällen eine kluge Antwort darstellen auf steigende Zahlen intoleranter, gewalttätiger junger Männer in Gemeinschaften von Einwanderern. Es ist eine Lage, die wir in Kanada besser erkennen sollten, nicht nur, um zu vermeiden, gedankenlos europäische Ängste vor Einwanderung als Engstirnigkeit abzutun, sondern auch, um die Probleme zu vermeiden, die Europa heimsuchen.

Das war keines der Probleme, die ich bei meinem Besuch in Holland vor einigen Wochen aufgreifen wollte. Ich war in den Niederlanden, um die holländische Drogen- und Prostitutionspolitik zu untersuchen; eine Arbeit, die mich eines Samstag Nachts in eine Tippelzone - eine Straße, in der Prostitution unter geregelten Bedingungen erlaubt ist - der Stadt Utrecht führte. Als ich Passanten interviewte, kam ein Auto langsam näher. Ein Fenster wurde herunter gekurbelt. Die beiden jungen Männer darin schrieen mich an: „Flikker! Flikker!"

Ich hatte keine Ahnung, worum es ihnen ging, aber dann blieb das Auto auf dem Bürgersteig ein paar Fuß vor mir stehen. Der Fahrer schrie, „Flikker!" und richtete eine Handfeuerwaffe auf meinen Kopf.

Ich duckte mich schnell und tief nach unten. Aber das nächste Geräusch, das ich hörte, war das Auto, wie es wegfuhr.

Wie ich später erfuhr, ist „Flikker" das holländische Äquivalent zu „Schwuchtel". Diese Männer hatten angenommen, dass ich ein Prostituierter sein musste, weil ich auf dem Bürgersteig stand, und darum ein Schwuler.

Ich war geschockt. Ich war schon in mehreren riskanten Ländern ohne einen Zwischenfall gewesen, aber hier, im friedlichen kleinen Holland, hält man eine Waffe in mein Gesicht. Unmöglich.

Glücklicherweise arbeitete ich diese Nacht mit einer jungen, holländischen Journalistin und sie hatte eine Erklärung. „Das waren Marokkaner", sagte sie mit einem Achselzucken.

Als ein netter, liberaler Kanadier fand ich es ein wenig schockierend, Volkszugehörigkeit geradeheraus als Erklärung für Kriminalität genannt zu bekommen. Aber meine holländische Kollegin ist eine nachdenkliche Feministin und eine Linke, nicht irgendein rassistischer Reaktionär.

Noch war dies einer der dutzenden Holländer, mit denen ich über diesen Vorfall in den folgenden Tagen sprach. Angesichts der Thematik, die ich in Holland untersuchen wollte, hatte ich mich in der Amsterdamer Innenstadt einquartiert - die Welthauptstadt der Toleranz, ein Ort, an dem jeder willkommen ist und die einzigen Regeln lauten: Tue niemandem weh und weiche Fahrrädern aus. Doch überall wo ich hinging, ließ die bloße Erwähnung von Kriminalität die Unterhaltungen in Richtung Einwanderer gehen, und vor allem Marokkaner (die, zusammen mit Türken und Indonesiern, die größte Einwanderergruppe des Landes darstellen).

„Junge Marokkaner sind das größte Problem", sagte mir der Besitzer eines Coffee-Shops im Rotlichtbezirk. In Holland sind „Coffee-Shops" Kneipen, die Marijuana verkaufen, und der Besitzer, ein Holländer in seinen 30ern, sortierte gerade seine Waren, als er sprach. Er und seine Frau waren genauso ultraliberal, wie man das von Coffee-Shop-Besitzern im Rotlichtbezirk erwarten könnte, aber sie regten sich furchtbar über marokkanische Männer auf, und vor allem über die Kinder der zweiten Generation marokkanischer Einwanderer - die Variante, die Schwule in holländisch anschreit, und nicht in arabisch. Viele sind religiöse Eiferer und gewalttätig, wie sie versicherten, und für so etwas gibt es keinen Platz in einem Land, das für seine Toleranz bekannt ist. „Wenn Migranten hier leben möchten, dann müssen sie auch tolerant sein", sagte er.

Ich habe ähnliche Kommentare wieder und wieder gehört. Frauen sagten mir, dass sie die Straße überquerten, um jungen marokkanischen Männern aus dem Weg zu gehen. Prostituierte fürchten sich vor Marokkanern und akzeptieren sie oftmals nicht als Kunden, egal wie dringend sie das Geld brauchen. Holländische Homosexuelle sind ebenso verängstigt. Und wütend.

Ich sprach eines Abends in einer Kneipe mit einer Gruppe schwuler Männer und erzählte ihnen, wie ich mit dem Wort „Flikker" vertraut wurde, obwohl ich vorsichtig war, die Volkszugehörigkeit der jungen Männer nicht zu erwähnen. Sie waren entsetzt. So etwas passiert einfach nicht in Holland, wie sie versicherten. In kleineren holländischen Städten, sagten sie mir, akzeptieren die Menschen Homosexualität vielleicht nicht, aber sie würden niemals einen schwulen Mann anschreien oder angreifen.

Dann sagte ich ihnen, dass die beiden Männer Marokkaner waren. Es gab ein kollektives Augenrollen. Ah. Das erklärt die Sache. Obwohl das Verprügeln von Schwulen äußerst selten in Holland sein mag, so ist es eine Art Spezialität junger marokkanischer Männer, von denen es viele für einen großen Spaß halten, in Parks zu gehen, wo sich Schwule treffen, und sie willkürlich anzugreifen.

„Viele Marokkaner, nicht alle, aber viele von ihnen, machen eine Menge Probleme, nicht nur wegen Schwulen, sondern wegen allem", sagte mir ein schwuler Mann. Er und seine Freunde hatten gerade darüber geredet, bevor ich eintraf.

Tatsächlich redet ein großer Teil Hollands über das Thema, und zwar schon seit Jahren. Nur dass es bis vor kurzem ausschließlich im Flüsterton erwähnt wurde. „Jeder sprach darüber, aber nur wenn die Tür geschlossen war", sagte mir eine Frau in einem Coffee-Shop - ein Kommentar, das ich immer wieder vernahm. Doch so ist es nicht länger. Die Holländer sprechen offen darüber, sogar eifrig, dank eines politischen Wirbelsturms namens Pim Fortuyn.

In Nordamerika haben wir nichts über Herrn Fortuyn gehört, bis ihn ein Tierrechts-Fanatiker in jenem Frühjahr ermordete. Die Todesanzeigen waren nicht nett. Einige Kommentatoren behaupteten, der politische Neuling, dessen stark ansteigende Popularität die holländische Politik in Aufruhr versetzte, sei ein „Faschist" gewesen. Andere warfen ihn einfach in denselben Topf wie rechtsradikale Politiker vom Schlage eines Jean-Marie Le Pen aus Frankreich oder Österreichs Jörg Haider. Fortuyn, so erzählte man uns, war Teil eines Trends, der Europa heimsuchte, eine Anti-Einwanderer-Gegenreaktion, die von ausländerfeindlichen, sogar rassistischen, Demagogen geführt wurde.

Das war äußerst unfair. Pim Fortuyn hasste Herrn Le Pen und seinesgleichen. Als ehemaliger Universitätsprofessor war er ein Befürworter der Legalisierung von Drogen, ein schwuler Lebemann, ein Wilde'scher Gecke (1) - ein echter Laissez-faire-Liberaler. Er spottete über den Islam als eine „rückständige Religion", aber diesen Kommentar muss man im Kontext eines Mannes sehen, der mehr Provokateur als Politiker oder Professor war - ein Mann, der sich gegen Vorwürfe des Rassismus verteidigte, indem er auf die nicht-weißen Männer zu sprechen kam, mit denen er geschlafen hatte. Man sollte sich auch daran erinnern, dass er seine anti-muslimischen Kommentare zum Besten gab, als holländische muslimische Kleriker krasse Bemerkungen gegen Schwule von sich gaben und als muslimische Männer „Flikker" zu Brei schlugen.

Und dass ist das Paradoxon von Pim Fortuyn. Indem er für ein Ende der Einwanderung in das kleine, dicht bevölkerte Holland aufrief, verteidigte er die Offenheit. Indem er „holländische Werte" gegen Multikulturalismus verteidigte, unterstützte er Pluralismus und Vielfalt. Seine Partei zog eine erschreckende Zahl von Sonderlingen und Verrückten an und die Kommentare von Herrn Fortuyn waren oft verantwortungslos und aufrührerisch, aber der Mann glaubte ehrlich, dass er die Intoleranz bekämpfte und sie nicht bewarb.

Das ist nicht leicht zu verstehen für Nordamerikaner. Auf diesem Kontinent ist Toleranz etwas, das wir von im Lande Geborenen erwarten. Intoleranz ist eine Sünde der weißen Mehrheit. Und Feindlichkeit gegenüber Einwanderer ist die schlimmste Form von Intoleranz, die man sich vorstellen kann.

Der Gedanke, dass Einwanderer selbst auf erschütternde Weise intolerant sein könnten, ist dem nordamerikanischen Verstand fremd. Zum Teil liegt das daran, dass die Einwanderung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nach Nordamerika ein überwältigender Erfolg war. Einwanderer in Kanada und in den Vereinigten Staaten haben zum Großteil wenigstens den Gedanken akzeptiert, dass wir zumindest Menschen tolerieren müssen, die nicht wie wir sind - das ist das Kernelement der Kultur liberaler Gesellschaften und der Schlüssel für das Funktionieren des Pluralismus.

Aber es gibt noch einen anderen Grund, warum wir annehmen, dass Gemeinschaften von Einwanderern gegen Engstirnigkeit und Hass immun sind: Radikaler Multikulturalismus. Das ist nicht der Multikulturalismus, der einfach menschliche Vielfalt würdigt. Es ist vielmehr der Multikulturalismus, der darauf besteht, dass alle Kulturen wunderbar, erhaben und gleich sind, dass alle Traditionen gepflegt und akzeptiert werden müssen und dass alle Kulturen Seite an Seite in süßer Harmonie leben können. In dieser Disneyland-Ideologie besteht die schlimmste Sünde, das eine, unentschuldbare Verbrechen, darin, eine andere Kultur zu kritisieren (von westlichen Kulturen abgesehen, deren Kritik nicht nur ermutigt, sondern vorgeschrieben wird).

Dies ist der Multikulturalismus, der sich weigert zu sehen, dass die meisten menschlichen Kulturen, heute und seit jeher, von Tribalismus gesättigt sind, von Engstirnigkeit und von antiliberalen Bösartigkeiten. Er weigert sich zum Beispiel zu sehen, dass ein brennender Hass auf Homosexuelle in vielen muslimischen Kulturen tief verankert ist, dass es kein Zufall ist, dass der offen schwule Bürgermeister von Paris von einem fundamentalistischen Muslim erstochen wurde, oder dass so viele junge marokkanische Männer sich dabei amüsieren, holländische „Flikker" zu verprügeln.

Leider war diese Strömung des Multikulturalismus in Europa sehr ansteckend. Manchmal breitete sie sich in wahnsinnigen Formen aus. Als eine norwegische Zeitung berichtete, dass eingewanderte muslimische Männer eine unverhältnismäßig große Zahl von Vergewaltigungen in Norwegen begingen, bestand ein Professor darauf, dass norwegische Frauen zumindest teilweise dafür verantwortlich waren. Er schrieb, dass ihre Kleidung für muslimische kulturelle Standards provokativ war. „Norwegische Frauen müssen erkennen, dass wir in einer multikulturellen Gesellschaft leben und sich dieser anpassen."

Jahrelang erstickte diese Form von Multikulturalismus eine Diskussion über die Probleme, welche die Menschen mit ihren eigenen Augen sahen. In Holland besteht zum Beispiel die Hälfte der Gefängnisinsassen aus nicht-holländischen Nationalitäten, aber bis Pim Fortuyn auftauchte, weigerten sich die Mainstream-Parteien, über Einwanderung zu diskutieren, und schrieen selbstherrlich die Wenigen nieder, die öffentlich das sagten, was jeder privat sagte. In dieser erstickenden Atmosphäre war es vielleicht unausweichlich, dass viele Europäer sich denjenigen zuwenden würden, die nur allzu gerne von „Einwanderungsproblemen" sprachen - Demagogen wie Jean-Marie Le Pen.

Jedoch liegt die Schuld nicht nur bei der europäischen multikulturellen Linken. Für Jahrzehnte bewarb die Rechte politische Maßnahmen, die eine große Zahl von „Gastarbeitern" und ihre Familien nach Europa brachten, aber hielten sie absichtlich auf Abstand mit abgetrennten Wohnungen und mit Gesetzen, welche es schwierig oder unmöglich machten, eine Staatsbürgerschaft zu erhalten. Das Ergebnis dieser brutalen Ausbeutung lässt sich zum Beispiel an den sowjet-artigen Sozialwohnblöcken am Rande französischer Städte beobachten - verbarrikadierte Ghettos, die mit der Armut, Entfremdung und Wut von Algeriern der zweiten und dritten Generation pulsieren.

Natürlich trafen Al Quaeda und andere radikale muslimische Gruppen ein, um die bittere Ernte einzusammeln. Fünf holländische Marokkaner wurden beschuldigt, terroristische Anschläge geplant zu haben. „Eine gewalttätige Strömung des radikalen Islam schlägt heimlich Wurzeln in der holländischen Gesellschaft", erklärte vor kurzem ein holländischer Geheimdienstbericht.

Früher in diesem Jahr warnte der belgische Geheimdienst, dass Al-Quaeda-Netzwerke in Brüssel und Antwerpen „eine ernsthafte und unmittelbare Bedrohung" darstellen. Im November suchte ein Aufstand arabischer Jugendlicher die Straßen von Antwerpen heim (er begann, als ein geistig kranker weißer Belgier einen muslimischen Mann aus unbekannten Gründen tötete); Belgische Behörden sagen, dass der Aufstand von islamischen Radikalen organisiert und angeführt wurde, die wollen, dass Muslime in Belgien in abgetrennten Gemeinschaften unter islamischem Recht leben.

Die Lage ist nicht völlig düster. Der türkische Geheimdienstbericht besagt, dass die Extremisten zwar bei den Marokkanern Erfolg hatten, aber dass es ihnen weitgehend nicht gelungen ist, Hollands türkische oder indonesische Gemeinschaften für sich zu gewinnen. Das stimmt mit Wahrnehmungen des Kriminalitätsproblems und der Meinung der meisten Holländer überein, die sich speziell über Marokkaner Sorgen machen, nicht über alle Muslime. Er besagt auch - zusammen mit zahlreichen weiteren Belegen - dass Einwanderung in Europa funktionieren kann, darunter auch die Einwanderung von Muslimen, wenn man genug acht gibt auf Integration.

Die holländischen Mainstream-Parteien fangen auch damit an, die Probleme offen anzuerkennen und über Möglichkeiten zu reden, wie man Immigration ermöglichen könnte - eine große Veränderung, welche durch die spektakuläre politische Karriere von „Pim" Fortuyn angespornt wurde. In anderen europäischen Ländern bahnt sich dieselbe Veränderung an.

Ein Teil dieser Veränderung beinhaltete Auflagen auf Einwanderung, die nordamerikanische Kommentatoren unfairerweise als simple Intoleranz angegriffen haben. Natürlich sind in Europa sehr reale ausländerfeindliche und rassistische Strömungen am Werk. Aber es gibt auch einen legitimen und notwendigen Versuch zu verstehen, was mit der Einwanderung falsch gelaufen ist und wie sie sowohl für Einwanderer, als auch für im Lande Geborene funktionieren kann.

Und indem sie das tut, schnappt das politische Zentrum den Ausländerfeinden das Thema weg und schickt die antiliberale Rechte zurück in die Wildnis. Jörg Haiders Unterstützung in Österreich ist bereits zusammengebrochen.

Für Europäer und Nordamerika gleichermaßen gibt es daraus eine wichtige Lektion zu lernen: Gleichgültig, wie explosiv ein Thema sein mag, es ist immer gefährlicher, so zu tun, als würde es nicht existieren, als offen und ehrlich darüber zu reden. Es wäre schön, wenn man annehmen könnte, dass dies für jeden in einer Demokratie offensichtlich ist. Aber es scheint, als bräuchten wir dann und wann eine Waffe am Kopf, die uns an diesen Punkt erinnert.

Fitna and the international community

The 15-minute video, which was denounced by the several governments (including the Dutch parliament of which Wilders is a member) before anybody had even seen it, has led to a worldwide discussion on freedom of expression in a world where, to put it bluntly, pissing off the Muslim community is not a good idea. Several Muslim governments warned that the Dutch would be held responsible for any insults toward Islam depicted in the film, 53 member of the Jordanian parliament have signed a petition calling for expulsion of the Dutch ambassador and an end to diplomatic relations with the country, the Pakistani government blocked its country's access to YouTube when what was claimed to be a trailer of Fitna appeared on the site, due to an error YouTube was unavailable worldwide for about two hours. The film was denounced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the European Union and several European governments, while these authorities acknowledged that Dutch law cannot halt its publication.

The review

The short film basically focusses on everything bad the muslim community has done over the last decade or so. Split up in three parts; the first depicting videos of terrorist attacks and their victims, the second focusing on punishments performed within the Muslim community under Sharia law and the strong anti-adultery and anti-homosexuality policies of the Islam faith, and the final part of the film dedicated to the Islam in the Netherlands and some of the controversy that has surrounded the issue. The film mostly seems to rely on shock value; bodies with severed limbs strewn across the street, videos of the 9/11, 7/7 and other attacks and depictions of beheadings, shootings and other generally gory stuff. These violent scenes are slotted together with quotes from the Qur'an, newspaper headlines and radical speeches by Muslim leaders and convicted terrorists.

In this reviewers opinion, Fitna is just another hate video, portraying Muslim society as a bunch of terrorists by using scare tactics similar to those in Mel Gibson's medieval style Christian film The Passion of the Christ. In my eyes, the film essentially calls for a Jihad style war on Islam and 'Islamisation' in the western world. Though interesting enough if you have been in an eight year coma and missed every speck of media attention Islam extremism has been getting over the last decade or so, the film doesn't really say anything new and instead just goes ahead and pisses off the entire Muslim community without really adding anything.

The future of Fitna

As the video becomes more accessible, it seems like two things are happening. Firstly the Islamic world is starting to notice that the film isn't as offensive as expected since it doesn't depict the predicted burning of the Qur'an or any other new directly offensive content. It seems like Wilders avoided the obvious insults, sticking to politically incorrect statements and suggestions that the religion is causing trouble. The second effect increased availability may have is an increase of threats from those who see the film and actually take it seriously (I know the makers consider the film serious but its obviously just a way to get media attention and right-wing support). We doubt that the film will actually cause or help cause an international war against the Islamic community, especially since everybody has heard its message already. The main question remains: Will Fitna cause Geert Wilders to follow in right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn and radical filmmaker Theo Van Gogh's footsteps and become the victim of The Netherlands' third political assasination in less than a decade?

Som det er set så mange gange før (bl.a. drabene på Theo Van Gogh og Pim Fortuyn), formår vold og trusler at sejre over rationaliteten og ytringsfriheden. Dette er et hårdt slag, og selvom Wilders' film var middelmådig, er det vigtigt at den er tilgængelig for så mange mennesker som muligt. Som jeg ofte siger, er mis- og disinformation ofte kilde til de største problemer, og hvis blot nogle af de store konflikter rundt omkring i verden skal løses, er det en nødvendighed at information kan flyde frit og uhindret. Se blot her: "Iran, Indonesien og Pakistan fordømmer den islamkritiske film 'Fitna'. Medier i Jordan tror, at Geert Wilders er dansker og opfordrer til boykot af danske varer." Har de nogensinde hørt om Wikipedia eller Google? Det er altså medierne i disse lande, ikke en eller anden bondemand uden kontakt til omverdenen. Sørgeligt!

Wow, wow, wow. I am utterly blown away about this book. I read it in two evenings and obviously couldn't put it down. I was so engrossed in this other world. And let's be honest she came from an entirely different world that Westerners like myself could hardly dare imagine.

There are a zillion reviews of the book so I'm not going to bore anyway with the same review, here's the NY Times review. I actually don't want to talk about the usual things that a reviewer might such as genital mutilation, refugees, immigration politics, islamic fundamentalism or honor killings.

I do want to talk about something that stuck out to me, the almost total lack of coverage in the U.S. of what was happening in the Netherlands over the last 5-7 years. We have been wall-to-wall coverage of WMDs and Iraq and Iran and Iraq and Britney Spears and Iraq and Eliot Spitzer and Britney Spears and Iraq and the 2008 elections. During all of this there was this major shift in Dutch politics, political upheaval surrounding Islam and a significant and growing muslim population in the Netherlands.

For years, the Dutch supported (and continue to support) a large refugee population, many from muslim populations. The Dutch went out of there way to accomodate the muslim faith of these refugees, but in that accomodation and tolerance they also facilitated the same isolation and lack of integration that inevitably plagues a large immigrant population. Even worse this immigrant population harbored a cultural hatred for the very country and Western culture that was signing their welfare checks. Here's a rather lengthy quote from the book,

In those days, especially in Labor Party circles, people were always positive about Islam. If Muslims wanted mosques and separate graveyards and ritual slaughterhouses, such things were built. Community centers were provided. Islamic fundamentalist ideas were swelling in such centers, but Labor Party people usually dismissed this as a natural reaction. These immigrants had been uprooted, they said; they were clinging temporarily, to traditional ideas, which would gradually fade away. They forgot how long it had taken Europe to shake off obscurantism and intolerance, and how difficult that struggle was.

When Somalis told me they didn't want to live in gaalo neighborhoods, I knew they wanted to avoid contact with the ungodliness of Holland. But Dutch officials always saw it as a natural desire to form a community. When Muslims wanted their own school, I saw it as forcing children to obey ideas unquestioningly; the Dutch saw no harm in funding them. When satellite dishes began bristling from every apartment in municipal housing projects, tuned to Moroccan and Turkish TV, my Labor Party colleagues saw this as a natural desire to maintain contact with home.

But with the dishes came preaching, indoctrination. There were door-to-door preachers passing out cassettes in most Dutch cities... Most migrant neighborhoods had shops selling traditional clothes and carpets and tapes, DVDs, and books on how to be a good Muslim in infidel territory. When the number of women wearing headscarves on the street became impossible to ignore, my Labor Party colleagues thoght it was only recent immigrants, who would soon abandon the practice. They failed to realize that it was the second generation, who were rediscovering their "roots," brainwashed by jargon I recognized: tawheed, kufr, the evil Jews.

Unfortunately at the same time that the U.S. was bombing Iraq back into the Stone Ages, the Dutch people were being confronted with a culture seemingly still stuck in the Stone Ages right in their backyards. And Ayaan Hirsi Ali played a significant role in bringing this other culture into the light, and to borrow the metaphor, evil cowers from the light.

I won't go into the details but Ayaan tried to convince the Labor Party that there were things happening in this muslim population that were completely and utterly outside of the moral values of the Dutch culture that harbored them. Ayaan eventually got herself elected to the Dutch parliament where she was able to bring these issues into the public square.

One issue that Ayaan wanted to bring to the light were the honor killings that were taking place in Holland every year. And here's the important lesson, instead of posturing, politicking or going on an endless "trust me it's happening" campaign she did what any good scientist or skeptic would do. She was able to get 2 of the 25 Dutch police precincts to simply document how many murders were considered "honor killings". This was significant because previously the police weren't allowed to document that information for fear of "stigmatizing" a population. After a mere 6 months or so, 11 girls, many teenagers, were documented as having been killed as a result of an honor killing. 11 girls in 6 months from only 2 of 25 precincts. This horrified the Dutch people.

The Dutch people were being confronted with the reality that their religious tolerance which had worked so successfully with the native Catholic, Protestant and Secular populations was utterly failing them. In one respect they were maintaining the value of religious tolerance while unwittingly withholding the value of individual liberty and freedom from women and children.

Ayaan Hirsi realized that the only way to bring freedom to half this immigrant population was for the Dutch to actually pursue integration. Not necessarily forced integration but at least stop funding so many of the self-segregationist policies that the Muslim community was creating, such as separate Muslim schools. She also later on convinced the Liberal Party (which could be loosely compared to Republicans here in the States but that would be unfair to the Liberal Party) to provide separate residence papers to women brought to Holland by legal immigrants, it wasn't easy but she sold it by,

"...talking about the women themselves brought to Holland by men they barely know, after arranged marriages, beaten until they ended up in the hospital, but who cannot file for divorce because if they did, they would have to leave Holland and return to their families, where they would be punished. The motion was passed by a majority of the parties in Parliament, although we had to do without the Christian Democrat's vote. (So much for brotherly love.)"

Ok so that last part might have been a cheap shot but they so deserved it. I admire her restraint.

 And perhaps most disturbing of all is that there was little if any coverage of any of this here in the States. I remember Pim Fortuyn being shot and killed but he was portrayed as some kind of xenophobic, right-wing, neo-fascist. That guy was more liberal than Hillary Clinton. I am sorry I didn't know any of this was going on. I am the typical Ameri-centric citizen after all.

I could go on and on (and it looks like I already have) but I did want to leave you with some more information.

In 2001 legde Grillo, als oud-boekhouder, Italië uit dat er iets mis móest zijn met de boekhouding van Parmalat. In 2004 ging het bedrijf net niet ten onder in het grootste boekhoudschandaal uit de Europese geschiedenis.

Hij dwong premier Prodi zich op TV te verdedigen tegen de aantijging dat hij zo slaapverwekkend is als valium (een aantijging die ik uit eigen waarneming overigens alleen maar kan onderschrijven).

Beppe Grillo, de komiek die het Pim Fortuyn-gevoel van Italië op Howard Dean-achtige wijze kanaliseert, heeft dan ook een van de populairste blogs van Italië.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, but a second after I awoke, I was filled with a feeling of dread, as if I'd been drenched with a bucket of cold water. And the terrible thought struck me: Ad Melkert won't be around anymore.

It's a sign of the times that the name will mean something to half a dozen of my readers, instead of none at all, as before. Melkert is, of course, the head of the list of the PvdA in the Dutch elections, who was unceremoniously booted up the arse by the collective clogs of a nation. On the evening of the result Melkert resigned, although nobody yet has been able to tell me what his position actually was.

He owes his fame to Pim Fortuyn, who is the reason why the world's media were in Holland last Wednesday to cover elections none of them had even known ten days before.

That was before Pim was murdered, achieving in a stroke what generations of Dutch politicians were unable to achieve in their entire careers: world recognition. He was following in the footsteps of the likes of Jim Morrison or James Dean, by dying before his potential could prove to be a disappointment. Pim lived fast, died (relatively) young and though he didn't exactly leave a beautiful corpse, he did leave one that was plastered all over the newspapers' front pages.

And so a legend was born; but the Dutch weren't content just to visit his grave (he's been buried once, and he's soon to be buried again in his mausoleum in Italy) and leave angst-filled graffiti. No, they had to go and bring down Ad Melkert.

My second thought on that fateful morning-after was: "What the bloody hell do those stupid cloggies think they're playing at?" The Lijst Pim Fortuyn (LPF), took 26 seats in the 150-seat Parliament, up from a total of, er, none at all in the last elections, or indeed ever. The list moved into second place, above the party of Prime Minister Win Kok. Which means that the Dutch electorate came within a hairsbreadth of electing a dead man as their leader.

That's no exaggeration. Although the list was stuffed with living people for appearance's sake, Fortuyn dominated it in every way. In the nine days after Pim's murder, I saw two list-members mentioned by name on the TV, but only once each. I couldn't tell you what the names were, and I'm convinced the Dutch voters couldn't, either. And yet they've sent 26 of these shadowy, faceless, anonymous creatures to Parliament. It's hard to imagine anything more dim-witted.

So the world is asking the pressing question: is the rise in stupid voting a threat to democracy? Never mind the menace of the far-right. The voters in France showered Le Pen with votes in the first round to send a rocket up the establishment, then two weeks later elected Smilin' Jack Chirac with a landslide that would have given Saddam Hussein a red face. Now the Dutch, boiling over with grief for a flamboyant dandyish homosexual with two lapdogs and a bug up his butt about Islam, have expressed their sorrow by voting into government a bunch of nobodies.

The threat to democracy is clear. The values of Big Brother have entered the political arena, and I'm not talking about George Orwell's creation. A new recipe for political success has been created: take one outrageous media-savvy personality, preferably with some outlandish character traits. Put into his mouth some saloon-bar platitudes so the man in the street will feel his voice is being represented. Have him dominate his party completely, leaving everyone else in his shadow. Then, at the last minute before polling, arrange to have him whacked (animal rights nutters are cheaper than Sopranos-like hitmen, I hear). And hey presto! Your placemen are inside the gates of power with never a moment's scrutiny being aimed at them.

For obvious reasons I'm not too amenable to becoming such a figurehead myself, although I have some of the media profile. But if you think you have what it takes to lead a new popular movement to electoral success, get in touch and we'll install you at the head of the Sour Grapes List in time for next summer's Belgian elections.

The lights are going out in voters' heads all across Europe, and a wave of bone-headedness threatens to engulf the Continent. It'd be a shame not to ride the wave for fun and profit while we can, don't you think?

‘Wat je zegt ben je zelf': op niemand is dit gezegde meer van toepassing dan op Geert Wilders, de kersverse politicus van het jaar 2007. Dat bleek opnieuw toen hij eindelijk eens stevig werd aangepakt door HBO-voorzitter Doekle Terpstra. Kritiek vat hij meteen op als een belediging: precies datgene wat hij zijn ergste islamistische vijanden verwijt. Ineens was het parlement heilig voor onze nationaal-populist, die altijd doet alsof hij een buitenstaander is die schijt heeft aan de kletspraat van het Haagse zootje. Híj voerde het debat waar het thuishoorde, in het parlement, terwijl Terpstra erbuiten ‘schandelijke partijpolitiek' bedreef. In plaats van een normale en welkome uiting van maatschappelijke betrokkenheid was die ‘buitenparlementaire tegenbeweging' volgens Wilders een belediging voor de PVV-kiezer ‘en dus voor de parlementaire democratie'.

Dezelfde schijnheiligheid klonk door toen hij Terpstra verweet ‘op de man te spelen'. Merkwaardig dat ook progressieve (?) journalisten als Pauw en Witteman, de Volkskrant in zijn redactioneel commentaar en de hele Tweede Kamer van Halsema tot Van Baalen dat Terpstra kwalijk leken te nemen. Maar al zou je het willen, in dit geval is het onmogelijk om niet op de man te spelen. Geert Wilders valt immers samen met zijn partij. Hij is daarvan de Leider en enige bestuurder. De statuten van de PVV bevorderen ‘het uitdragen van de politieke en maatschappelijke standpunten, zoals deze door de heer Geert Wilders zijn uitgedragen en in de toekomst zullen worden uitgedragen.' Terwijl hij zelf zegt nooit individuen aan te vallen, noemde hij Vogelaar knettergek en beschuldigde hij eerder Aboutaleb, Albayrak en Arib zo ongeveer van landverraad.

Veel parlementariërs leken gepikeerd door het impliciete verwijt van Terpstra dat ze te weinig tegen Wilders ondernamen. Maar het hardnekkige beeld is dat de Kamer zich met de man geen raad weet. De Kamerleden lijken te denken: Geert is een rotzak, maar het is wel ónze rotzak. SP'er Harry van Bommel meende aan tafel bij Pauw & Witteman dat Terpstra de Wildersstemmers door zijn tegenbeweging ‘niet serieus nam.' Vist hij soms in dezelfde electorale vijver van boze en bange autochtonen als Wilders zelf? Die achterban bestaat voor een groot deel uit mensen uit witte wijken en dorpen die nog nooit een islamiet hebben gezien behalve op tv, en die juist via Wilders en De Telegraaf het idee krijgen dat ons land naar de knoppen gaat. Het wordt tijd dat we die ongelukkige mening eens gaan tegenspreken in plaats van respectvol te begrijpen - zonder de terechte kritiek op de nare kanten van de islam buiten de orde te verklaren.

De filosoof Voltaire zei: ‘Ik kan uw mening nog zó abject vinden, ik zal uw recht verdedigen om die te uiten'. Pim Fortuyn viel hem daarin bij. Maar tegenwoordig mag je niets meer zeggen wat ooit tegen Fortuyn werd gezegd, wat dat is ‘demonisering', en we weten dat Fortuyn het met de dood moest bekopen. Dus toen Terpstra zei dat het tijd werd voor ‘een breed gedragen nee tegen de kwade boodschap van Wilders en de zijnen', en De Telegraaf dat rellerig simplificeerde als ‘Wilders is het kwaad dat moet worden gestopt', dan mag je dat niet zeggen omdat dat een directe oproep zou zijn tot gebruik van geweld. Maar zelf sprak Wilders onbekommerd van ‘een abjecte brief van een gevaarlijke man'. We herinneren ons dat Gerrit Zalm niet zo lang geleden Pim Fortuyn ‘gevaarlijk' noemde: een frase die door Volkert van der Graaf dankbaar werd herhaald ter rechtvaardiging van zijn daad.

Niemand mag Wilders het recht op het vrije woord ontzeggen. Als hij de koran wil vergelijken met Mein Kampf, Mohammed met Hitler en de islam met fascisme: hij gaat zijn gang maar met zijn verbale agressie. Als hij wil relschoppen op wereldschaal, en een film wil maken die de Deense cartoonaffaire moet doen verbleken, zien de meeste van zijn kiezers hopelijk in dat de belangen van het goede vaderland hiermee volstrekt niet worden gediend. Maar de Voltaireaanse vrijheid van meningsuiting heeft natuurlijk twee kanten. Ook al verdedigen we het recht van Wilders om dit te zeggen en te doen, dat hoeft ons niet te beletten om zijn standpunten abject en zijn optreden minderwaardig, onbeschaafd en gevaarlijk te noemen.

Zelfs zijn vergelijking van de islam met fascisme slaat als een boemerang op hem terug. Niet lang geleden meende de schrijver Marcel Möring dat Wilders een klassieke fascistoïde retoriek hanteerde toen hij de uitingen van minister Vogelaar bestempelde als ‘verraad aan de Nederlandse cultuur'. Inderdaad was het een geliefde redenering van radicale volksnationalisten zoals Mussert dat andersdenkenden eigenlijk niet bij het volk hoorden en buiten de nationale cultuur moesten worden geplaatst. In HP/de Tijd (14.12.07) pleit Wilders zelfs voor deportatie van hele moslimgezinnen als een lid ervan problemen veroorzaakt: 'gewoon verwijderen!'

De klassieke fascisten waren anti-democraten die het parlement wilden afschaffen en de leidersstaat wilden vestigen. Wilders is een volksnationalist die, mede gezien zijn nieuwe liefde voor het parlement, vooralsnog als een democraat moet worden beschouwd. Maar het is op het randje. Het is beschamend en verontrustend dat een politicus met deze fascistoïde denkbeelden anno 2007 kan worden verkozen tot de beste politicus van het jaar.

 Something keeps pestering me months after watching Theo van Gogh's '06/05'-May6th .  Sure, the foreign Dutch docu-drama has all the grab and controversy I would expect of familial lines connected to the revered Mr Vincent.  But there is this peculiar analogous simmering I see unfolding here in the states, and at the same time distinct mirror opposites- the world is changing yet staying the same = stupor, stagnation... fill in the blank.

The film highlights the assassination of the outspoken Dutch politician-"Prime Minister-in-waiting"  Pim Fortuyn by a zealot animal/environmental rights activist and how photojournalist, Jim De Booy gets entangled into the mix.  This would be perhaps enough to keep most audiences gazing.  Some like myself, even more than lightly engaged and questioning- wondering.

And there is so much more to this indi-film piece- circuital ironies, clandestine politics, and the surrerptitious triangulation of Fortuyn, van Gogh, and the ever increasing obscurity of the lightning rod that is Ms Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

Theo was no stranger to controversy, creative iconic adulation, and livid abomination by some, especially heightened with the collaborative work done on Submission with Hirsi Ali, that some say was the ultimate nail in his coffin leading to his brutal and horrifying murder while riding his bike though the Dutch neighborhood streets.

I was surprised not to find the amount of discussion and varied review of 06/05 that seemed timely after some years of distance and perspective, but even further jarred at finding myself looking at some current socio-political divides and similarities that some in the US seem almost too comatose to pay attention to.

Mevrouw Verdonk heeft zich laten inspireren door het gedachtengoed van Pim Fortuyn. Ze raakt daarmee een gevoelige snaar, zelfs bij mij. Want: kúnnen we trots zijn op Nederland? Hebben we zoiets als een nationale identiteit? Weten we nog wat ons mensen aan elkaar bindt in Nederland?

Los van de nationale gekte bij internationaal voetbal - omgeven door commercie, stemmig oranje en veel kabaal -  staan we niet snel op de kop voor Nederland. Over de grens schromen we er niet voor om misstanden breed uit te meten, tegenover elke Fransman of Spanjaard met wie we een beetje vertrouwelijk worden. Vaak gaat dat gepaard met een grenzenloos positivisme, over de zegeningen van het vakantieland wel te verstaan. Buitenlanders vatten meestal het compliment wel, maar begrijpen het gemis aan trots niet.

Ik begrijp het ook niet. Enkele voorbeelden:

• We hebben prachtige spreekwoorden en gezegdes: Hoge bomen vangen veel wind. Doe maar gewoon, dan doe je al gek genoeg.  Je moet je kop niet boven het maaiveld uitsteken...
• We hebben zojuist via televoting een prachtig nieuw volkslied gekozen ter vervanging van het Wilhelmus: "Mijn vaderland" van Frans Bauer!
• We hebben de satire van Kooten & De Bie ver achter ons gelaten en kunnen nu dagelijks kijken naar de shows van Paul de Leeuw waarin iedereen en niets de ruimte krijgt: platte humor als democratisch principe.
• Nederland heeft bovendien een sterke traditie op het gebied van de zurige journalistiek, de geschreven variant van de afzeiktelevisie. De Volkskrant beheerst als de beste dit vakkundig neersabelen of fileren van producties, persoonlijkheden en imago's.

Zonder ironie: als je in een land met de paplepel krijgt ingegoten dat elk principe relatief is, dat afkammen wel grappig is en dat kleineren van verstand getuigt, wat verwacht je dan?

Ik ben niet trots op mijn land, niet trots op mijn buurt, niet trots op mijn huis, misschien niet eens trots op mezelf. Met dank aan Rita die ons wijst op wat we kwijtgespeeld hebben begin ik eerst maar bij mezelf en mijn directe omgeving. Het is een lange weg te gaan, maar de beweging die ik nodig heb.
