Not ready to commit to ripping out your entire parking strip or building a big raised bed? You can take baby steps towards colonizing this valuable growing space by putting out a few inexpensive half-barrel planters to catch the sunlight for a small selection of veggies and flowers.

Here is an example from my neighborhood:

This garden is also on a fairly decent slope, so perhaps the ground had to be dug out a tiny bit so that they would be level. Other than that, it looks like they were pretty much just plunked down and planted.

OK, I admit it. I will probably never need to know this again but in the off chance that I do here is how I repaired our ailing barrel planter.

You know those half barrels you can purchase at hardware stores? Well, my wife and I have two of the things. One is out back near our greenhouse with flowers planted in it. We haven't exactly found a use for the other one yet. It was beginning to fall apart from weathering and lack of use. I had put it on top of a tree stump we have in the back yard. This was a mistake! As the barrel sat there, the stump placed pressure under the bottom part of the barrel which eventually led the bottom to warp and come out of place.

That was my problem and here is the solution: I had to reassemble the barrel. How it works is rather simple, but you probably wouldn't know that just to look at one. It's basic physics - levers in fact. Here goes:

Disassemble the barrel. (Pull the pieces out until they all fall out.)

Place the metal ring on the group with the other metal rings (mine had 2 more) around it. You can't really get this step wrong since the metal rings are each a different size. Put the smaller into the larger. Repeat until you have all the rings in place.

Now take the base and lay it inside the innermost ring.

Jam your first side piece down between the innermost ring and the base. My side pieces had a groove at one end to hold the base in place.

Add some more right next to the first one.

When you have a few in place, place one on the opposite side from the others. This one will act as both a simple lever to keep pieces on the other side in place and a placeholder for future pieces next to it.

Now, simply continue to add pieces until they are all included. You may need a hammer.

The final step is to pull the metal rings up and into place on the barrel.

This should only take a fem minutes.Enjoy!

Ekstremt irriterende. Men tomater har jeg heldigvis. I lange baner.

(Sorry, gratuitous Salinger reference there…)

(Sorry, gratuitous Salinger reference there...)

In my previous (and very first) garden, the only patch of ground that was free of summer-long shade was on the street, in the parking strip. So, if I wanted a few veggies, herbs and strawberries to nibble, I had no option but to garden out there. Not being too handy, but feeling like a raised bed was the best way to contend with tree roots and crummy soil, I pondered the options. My mom ended up getting some friends to build me one as one of my all-time best ever birthday presents. I got a lot of fun and use out of it, and was really bummed to drive by our old house recently and see that the new owners had dismantled it for some unknown reason. Maybe I should ask if I can have the pieces back, to rebuild it (by myself, this time) in our current place...

Here are some links for building raised beds. I'm not going to reinvent the wheel here, just providing some options.

Sunset Magazine has a fairly simple design, and they claim it can be built with redwood or cedar for under $200. Does require a table saw, though.

Here's a really spiffy one, from This Old House. Pricier too, though, and probably needing someone pretty handy to put it together.

Prefer a video? This is kind of goofy (bonus for dog-lovers, cute labs co-star, chasing sticks and a frisbee), but shows how to make a planter bed with untreated 2 X 12's, coated at home with linseed oil. Tells you how to mole-proof, too.

This is a Texas A & M University (Ag school) article, " In Praise of Raised Beds," with advice about how big to build yours and how to prepare the ground, what soil to add, etc.

Treated wood is icky. Nobody knows for sure what it leaches into your soil, so try to avoid it if possible!

Here's an example of some raised planter beds in our neighborhood:

Small crosswise ones allow you to reach in and not have to step on and therefore compact the soil.

This one is a small square bed, great for a vertical crop like beans or peas plus whatever you want to plant around the edges.

You can also forgo wood altogether and make a bed out of paver bricks or broken concrete (scroll down in the latter link to see a nicely formed herb bed using this method). To be legal with the city, at least in Seattle, raised beds in the parking strip require a permit, and bricks or stones must be fixed in place, not removable for easy hurling.

Raised beds make root crops like carrots and beets much easier to grow, and in an urban setting, adding your own soil from a known safe source is a plus too. Before you set up your bed, be sure to double-dig or rototill the existing soil to help with drainage. And don't forget to add lots of compost! Anyone have a favorite? Mushroom compost? Something containing bat guano, perhaps? Or just home-grown?

One of the best parts of having a garden is that you

Types Of Hanging Outdoor Plants
by Rebecca Jane

One of the best parts of having a garden is that you can build up a wonderful array of foliage and flowers to brighten it up all the year round. From a lush green lawn, to wonderful vibrant flowerbeds and planters, there is a lot you can do to transform an otherwise lifeless garden into a stunning swathe of scenery to look at and enjoy all year round.

If you have an outdoor pergola or other structure that you want to liven up a bit, you might think that you are restricted to having a variety of pots scattered here and there, but don't forget the power of hanging plants to soften up the whole thing as well.

Hanging baskets make a great addition to any home, and you can use them in a number of ways to create different effects. The types of plants you use make a lot of difference to the final result, so choose carefully and plan the contents of each one before you begin.

Lobelia is a good choice since it comes in several different colours and trails profusely out of anything you put it in. The small bright flowers are quite stunning and if you put more than one colour in a single basket you hardly need anything else in with it to complete the look.

You may not think that geraniums are a good choice for a hanging basket but if you plant them in the centre of the arrangement they grow upwards and provide size and form as well as gorgeous colour. Vireya rhododendrons are another fine choice if you can keep them well watered, as they are a tropical plant.

If you want to bulk out the basket with some greenery hanging down for good effect, then don't dismiss the staple varieties of ivy that are available. These make a wonderful choice if you want to have that long trailing effect that looks so good in any kind or size of basket.

As a general rule pick plants that will either remain fairly small in size, or are known for their ability to grow over the sides of their containers. The secret to keeping them looking good at all times is to water them well. During hot weather you should water your baskets in the morning, before the sun has a chance to get really hot, and also in the evening once the baskets are out of direct sunlight. If you miss even a day doing this you will notice the difference.

It is also important to select plants that are native to and lovers of the particular climate in your local area. What may flourish in one garden could wilt and die in another, so make your choices carefully and ask for advice at your local garden center if you can.

With practice you will soon be designing stunning hanging baskets for your veranda that everyone will stop to admire. And you'll get months of enjoyment out of them too.

Having problem

Planter Wart Removal at Home
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Shank]Tim Shank

Having problems with planter warts is no walk in the park. They cause a lot of problems for those that suffer from them, from having difficulty in walking to the problem that they tend to spread once they get a stronghold on your foot. A planter wart is actually a benign tumor that is on the bottom of the foot, they grow in size until sometimes they are an inch or more in diameter, and at times they even spread out over the bottom of the foot into clusters. Whilel they are not really dangerous, they do generally cause some pain when the person is walking and they are undesirable. There are a few methods of planter wart removal, some of them are done at the doctors office and others are done at home.

Planter wart removal at the doctors usually is done by either freezing them off with a cold solution, burning them with a laser or sometimes they are even removed by outpatient surgery. The process is rather quick, but it can really be painful to have done. The wart itself does not have any nerve endings, so it does not hurt to remove the wart but when the removal process hits the flesh, where there are nerve endings it can be a rather unpleasant experience. There are also some ways to remove the warts from home. The freezing solutions are available now at drug stores and there are also some medicated pads that you can put on the warts to remove them. You will generally need to keep these pads on your feet for up to 2 or more weeks, which is a long time, and they can cause some additional discomfort while you are using them from the pressure on an already tender spot.

Natural home mole, tag and wart removal can be dangerous if you do not use all natural methods. Don't risk an infection and a scar that will last for the rest of your life. Visit our website for a special report on natural mole, tag and wart removal at http://www.moleswartstags.info/

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kenny_Yong]Kenny Yong

Selecting suitable garden planters for your home garden depends mainly on the type of plant you wish to grow. The quantity of space necessary for the roots and the plant’s fullness and height will suggest the right size. Your garden’s growing environment design will decide the best planter material.

In addition, keep in mind to consider the needs for relocating your garden planters or moving them permanently if you’re renting a home or you have a huge garden to arrange.

The bigger, the better, is one major rule in choosing garden planters. Small planters will soon seem to look much smaller when the plants grow maturely and you will need more garden planters to fill up the space of your garden. Moreover, bigger planters assist slower drying as those of smaller ones. If you’re thinking of perennial planting, then you can purchase the biggest planter that you can buy for you to accommodate more wear and growth years.

This article provides you a checklist to aid you choose the best garden planter for your home garden:

• A garden planter should have more space for a certain quantity of soil and must permit enough growth of roots but not too huge though.

• Each garden planter should contain drainage holes. You should ensure that the planter comes with bottom holes or it is crafted with materials which allow you to drill drainage holes in it.

• Make sure that the soil can breathe inside the planter. The roots of the plant require water for oxygen requirement, as well as nutrients.

• Metal, wood and concrete garden planters are absolutely great for winter seasons and regions. Terracotta or clay planters have both splitting and freezing vulnerability.

• Your garden planters group or your planter location must then be considered. There should be adequate support in your patio or balcony for the planter weight or planter group.

• Be stylish by thinking out the amount of space for your planter location and the look you would want to suggest. Cool colors like light yellow creates a much larger space look. Intense shades, on the other hand, create a tinier space look.

When it comes to taking care of your planters, such task will eventually provide you with much more benefits. Of course, you would want to grow healthier plants. This would be possible if you ensure the garden planter is free from pests and diseases. You should as well provide enough drainage and maintain structured sound.

Here are few other tips in caring for your home garden planters:

• Garden planters must be sterilized prior to their usage especially for terracotta and absorbent wooden planters.

• Provide in-between pot spaces for planter clean-up.

• Wooden and metal planters should be treated with non-toxic paint, stain or waterproofing stuffs.

• Lay the bottom of the planters above the ground to allow a good drainage and to keep the plant roots and planters away from water damage.

• Check on expanding plant roots. If you observe roots peeping through the planter’s drainage holes then there is now need for you to replant into a bigger pot.

• Remember to keep the planters insulated during winter to prevent thawing and freezing.

Having garden planters entails a lot of care and maintenance. This is one way to keep your home garden fun and kicking.
