Hmm. Alot of indie junk. I guess I've been listening to alot of Interpol lately. I've never really been an Interpol fan until recently. I guess I like how they express both despair and hope very flatly. Like, they despair, but they are not passionate about it. They just describe it. Similarly, they hope, but they do so without expecting much of anything at all to happen. Jenny Lewis' new album is good. I'm quite impressed with her songwriting. Rilo Kiley is another one of those bands that expresses the very ordinary, unspectacular despair that is made all the more desperate because it is so mundane and universal. All My Friends, LCD Soundsystem, similar kind of feeling. Threads, by Portishead. Pure dread. Of course, none of these New York bands would be around without the Velvet Underground. And you can never go wrong with Radiohead.

À un moment un peu sombre de mon adolescence, je m'étais fixé le but (absolument random) d'entretenir une conversation complète en n'utilisant que des paroles de chansons (et idéalement que mon interlocuteur n'y voie que du feu!). Il va sans dire que j'ai rapidement laissé tomber l'idée...

Anyways, j'étais toute chose en tombant sur cette entrevue du Guardian réalisée avec Mike Skinner, aka The Streets. Quelques questions posées à m'sieur Skinner à partir des paroles de ses propres tounes. Enfin, ze réponse à la question qu'on se pose tous depuis deux ans, « How the hell am I supposed to do a line in front of complete strangers when I know they've all got cameras? » J'aurais aimé qu'il réponde aussi avec des paroles de ses chansons, mais bon. Ça aurait été trop beau!

Autre trouvaille chouette au hasard des Internets, via Basement Beatz : le collectif The Noise/Floor Crew qui remixe, au complet, l'album Third de Portishead, en lui injectant une p'tite dose de rentre-dedans. Et le résultat est curieusement trrrès intéressant! Ça s'écoute ici.

Un dernier truc, encore volé sur un blogue, cette fois-ci à la belle Melly Mel sur Sweet & Dandy : les jeudis Dare to Care / Grosse Boîte. Quatre jeudis d'octobre, deux bands par soir, et un Divan Orange qui sera sûrement toujours plein à craquer. Et un nom, en particulier, qui retient mon attention : les Frères Goyette! Ça sent le « match » entre les Goys et Dare to Care, et j'avoue que je trouve ça particulièrement cool. À suivre...

C’est sorti cet été mais j’ai completement passé à coté.  Noise/Floor Crew, un trio composé de Lady Four Square, Angel Alanis & de Local Hero ont réinventé chacunes des tracks du dernière album de Portishead.  Ya d’la bass méchante, des drums pesants et surtout, pas de pitié pour les petites oreilles fragiles.

At a certain point, I feel like every post is pretty repetitive "Still job hunting, blah blah blah, man, unemployment sure is boring..." and so on and so forth.  There is nothing new to report.  And me whining certainly isn't entertaining.  So if I don't write as often, thats why. I don't need to subject more people to that. BTW, today is Day 52.

A really good website to find out about new musicians you may like: Pandora.  I have found out about a bunch of new artists that I ended up REALLY liking from them; The Hush Sound, Hurts To Purr, and Katie Todd.  I also started giving other artists who I had heard OF, but never listened to, a chance, and was pleasantly suprised, like with The New Pornographers, Petra Haden, The Kinks, Portishead and The Pierces.

Oh, Katie Todd.  I adore you, and yet you insist on being so low profile.  I keep trying to upload her music on Imeem, and for some reason it won't allow me to (perhaps because I bought her albums on ITunes?).  Anyways, she is great.  the couple performance videos aren't anything too spectacular, but her sound is so incredible.  The guitar riffs are amazing, and her piano playing reminds me of...running.  It's hard to explain.

The sound quality isn't great, and sadly, there isn't a ton of stuff online to hear. Your best bet is CDBaby.com and just type in her name (she also goes under 'Katie Todd Band'), and you can hear some samples there. Or just go to her MySpace page, and you can hear some stuff there. But she is really excellent, with a slightly different sound.

Another artist I just learned about, from Perez (which is where I learned about Katy Perry, Bo Pepper, AlphaBeat and Robyn.), is Marit Larsen.

There is another video shot the same day of her walking around the train station singing the song, and then one of her (same outfit, same day) standing in front of a produce stand. All videos are of her singing "If A Song Could Get Me You". All her other songs (I listened to them on imeem) do not disappoint. And look at her! She's so cute! She's like a little Norwegian fairy!

New (to me) music I'm having a loud and repeated love affair with. A handful of them I've mentioned in an older post. Probably some of the names aren't accurate too, as I'm still an old Limewire twit...

Ella está cansada de depender de Cupido y decide entregar su corazón a las mujeres, al "otro bando", a un relacionamento profundo por el cual se siente identificada y hace tiempo que está tentada a explorarlo.

este ultimo trabajo llamdo llamado "Third" , que esta excelente lo recomiendo para que lo  escuchen ......

The main difference is that the samples and origins of the songs are more hidden than before. On the first Portishead album you could hear the sample base for a track really clearly, which wasn't a bad thing. But on Third, the songs sound like the product of an actual band. The opening track "Silence" is a good example of this, with it's clattering drums and distorted guitar line. "Machine Gun" is maybe the biggest departure from Portishead's trademark sound, all harsh beats and juddering synth stabs. "Small" oscillates between a kind of 60's proggy rock and psychedelia but the effect is jarring.

A dark and somewhat muted atmosphere is prevelant throughout the album; "Hunter" and "Nylon Smile" have a woozy melody and muted drums. "Plastic" is pretty hard going, with Beth Gibbons vocals especially icy. "We Carry On" is especially mechanical and harsh sounding, until it fizzes into life with a echoing guitar riff. Sometimes, it's a little hard to see through the murk, but there are some comparatively lighter moments. The end of "The Rips" has a warm burbling synth line towards the end which rescues the song from bleakness. The ukelele and barbershop vibe of "We Carry On" is a little silly though.  Third isn't a bad album, but it's not engaging me right now. Previous Portishead albums were all growers too, but parts of Third feel unessicarily heavy and dirge like.

1. Dismember -Combat Fatigue

Combat fatigue could likely refer to the infinite studying during this winter and summer. An excellent song, one of the best songs out of Sweden for many years. It sets of with a riff that could only be written by Sarcofago of the INRI era! It continues with a simple and steady heavy beat and an old school Dismember riff. The chorus is massive. and for the final lines a totally new enthralling riff enters with Karki's transfixing interpratation eventuating in the initial sarcofago-riff. Confusion-Angst-Fear-Tiredness and drums-monotonous riff-vocals tear the place apart.

2. Hail of Bullets - Advancing Once More

The album about war this year is the one released by "Hail of Bullets", even though Dismember is about war as well. Martin Van Drunen leads this all-star band. Gebbedi, of "Thanatos" fame, is on guitar and Ed Wardby, of Goreferst, on drums. The song, as the album in general, reeks of Gorefest. The heavy Gorefest riff in the begining leads slowly to an impressive old scholl outbreak in the middle of the song. The riff reminds of "Death", of the Leprosy era. Van Drunen's vocals make me feel like time has stopped in 1995.

3.  Deicide - Horrors in the Halls of Stone

Probably the best song in the new Deicide album. I liked this album more than the previous one, which I found ok but shallow. This song is hellish and heavy in the beginning, not similar to anything Deicide have done in the past. The riff in the 1:48 and the grinding part however, is 100% early Deicide! A riff so simple and old fashioned, but no new band could pull off. Benton is repugnant.

4. Tiamat - Until the hellhounds sleep again

Even though because of songs like 'The equinox...' the new Tiamat album became so loved, my favorite and the one I listened more was this one. Scary atmosphere and a great chorus.

5. Portishead - The Rip

Maybe the song I listened more from the new album. I am ashamed to speak about it. It speaks for itself.

6. Hellacopters - I just don't know about girls

The final Hellacopters album is unfortunately their worst because it is comprised of cover songs. However, almost all songs are very good. My favorite ones are the one from Asteroid B-612 (this one) and the amazing cover of Dead Moon's 'Rescue'. 'I just don't know...' is perfect for Nicke's voice and has an amazing chorus.

7. Disfear - Testament

One of my favorite records this year is the new Disfear. That song is among the ones which blew me away. See past post for more (i.e. Who's who? About Disfear and others).

8. Disfear - Get it off

The killer opening track of the new Disfear. It signposts the period when I indeed had a lot to get off my back.

9. Unleashed - The greatest of all lies

A perfect song from the new Unleashed album, in order to get back to death metal. Death the way ONLY Unleashed know how to play. I dare anyone to point me towards another band that does what they do.

10. Benediction - Dripping With Disgust

PROBABLY THE BEST SONG FOR THIS YEAR. Benediction released a fuel injected death metal masterpiece. Nevermind the drum machine (I don't know for sure but it sure sounds like one). Pure inspiration and early 90s feeling from one of Britain's finest! The singer has gone mad in this album. I don't think death metal has been more honest and furious for a long time. The best intro ever, best chorus ever!

Yo venía escuchando a mi querida Alanis Morissette cantando “You oughta know” y me negaba a creerle. No puede ser, los ’90 con nada de música? Counting Crows, Portishead, Rage against the Machine, Stereophonics, Silverchair, Queens of the Stone Age… ufff, muchas!

Charlando con otros amigos, me decían que escuche Tool (otra banda formada en los '90) y tengo que confesar que me resistí un poco. Pero mis amigotes son buenos y lindos, asi que me convencieron. Ale me mandó a leer algo que escribió él (léanlo y sufran colapso freak) en otro blog y Fran me dijo que escuche el tema “Lateralus” del disco homónimo.

Bien. Hice la tarea: me bajé su primer disco “UnderTow” de 1993. Muy lindo disco. Sobre todo el tema “Prision Sex”, la verdad es que sorprende. Comenté con Federica que tenía una onda Pearl Jam que me gustó. El tema “4 Degrees” también me llamó la atención.

Confieso, no me vuelven loca, al menos por ahora. Lo cual es lógico porque no me gusta mucho el trash metal y además por respeto a la música voy a dejar pasar algunos días antes de volver a escucharlos.

El gran "pero":  “Lateralus” me gustó y mucho. Se ve el laburo de la banda a lo largo de los años, la verdad es que es admirable.

Otro amigo me recomendó los videos Ænema,  Prison Sex,  y Parabola.

La nota:  A partir de los discos “Lateralus” y “10.000 days” la banda cambió de rubro musical, pasan del trash metal al rock progresivo y de ahí al art rock. Te veo la cara lector! “¿¡el art que!?”. Art Rock: no es para cualquiera (al menos eso dicen). Es una mezcla balanceada del arte en expresiones diferentes usando la música como principal pegamento. Lo digo al paso: Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band… Pero creo que eso ya es material de otro post.Concluyo: amigo que dice que en los ’90 no se hizo música. Carajo, que mal estamos.

De oído: ¿Escuchar la discografía de Tool en una tarde, es perjudicial para la salud?

今聴いてみると、なんというか昔ほどの感動がない1枚。すごく良いものであることは間違いないのだけれど、生の音の中にDJがいるって構図が今現在、想像以上に陳腐化したせいか、美化された記憶が現実に直面した心地。皆ベスのヴォーカルに気を取られがちだけど、結構ギターがいいと思うんですが。思わない？　サンプリングを生でやりました的な試みだったら、これより『PNYC Roseland New York』の方が聴いてて未だに感動できるかも。ライブ盤とは思えない張り詰めた感じは凄いですよね。世間的にも名盤ということいなってるらしいです。

そういえば今年はPortisheadだけじゃなくて、Tirckyもニューアルバムをリリースしたりと、「トリップホップ」って文脈で括られていた中でも、ロック方向で人気のあった人らが懐かしいことになってますね。Massive Attackも含めた3者の中なら、僕は断然Portisheadでしょうか。なんでこのあたりの暗い音って定期的に支持されるんでしょうね。Radioheadとかの流れなんですかね。申し訳ないけど僕トム･ヨーク気持ち悪くて駄目なんですが。あと、気になるのが、高校の頃行きつけだったレコード屋のおっちゃんが「bjork好きな奴にはロリコンが多いな」って言ってたんですが、だとするとPortishead好きは熟専なんですかね。

最初の話に戻すと、Portisheadが次のアルバム出すまでに10年かかったわけですが、ちょっと長すぎたと思うんですよ。TrickyもMassive Attackも注目度は落ちて、どんどん停滞して。売れるのが正義ってわけじゃないですが、今でもこの音に引っかかる人はいるだろうし、そう考えると勿体なかったんじゃないかな。
