F-Script is mostly latently typed and, as such, could benefit from a type inference system. Among other things, type inference can be used to detect a number of programming errors at compile time (which is nice) without cluttering programs with explicit typing.

Creating such a system for F-Script can draw from techniques already in use with some latently typed languages. Beside, in the case of F-Script, there is a way to improve the efficiency of these techniques to produce a powerful and effective type inference system. The key point is that while F-Script code is largely exempt of explicit typing, most methods invoked from F-Script are actually Objective-C methods for which explicit typing information is often available. This means that we have a massive amount of type information we can feed the type inference system with, making it easier for it to infer new type information in F-Script code and, ultimately, to detect potential programming errors (or to help with automatic optimization, etc.)

This interesting approach is presented by Andrew Weinrich and Ben Liblit, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in « Type Inference in Mixed Compiled / Scripting Environments ». In particular, they describe how it is implemented in
flint
a type checking and static analysis tool for F-Script under development.

Summary:
Programs written in statically-typed languages are commonly extended with scripting engines that manipulate objects in the compiled layer. These scripting environments enhance the capabilities of the program, at the cost of additional errors that would be caught by compile-time type checking. This paper describes a system for using type information from the compiled, statically-typed layer to perform type inference and checking on scripting code. To improve the quality of analysis, idiomatic rules based on common programming patterns are used to supplement the type-inference process. A proof-of-concept of this system is shown in
flint
, a type-checking tool for the language F-Script.

Mark Driver, an analyst at Gartner, has an just published an interesting article noting the resurgence of interest in Smalltalk. He says that developers owe a tremendous debt to Smalltalk but the language itself has been relegated to a small niche of technology elites for several years now. He reasons that this was because it introduced so many new concepts that the developer community is only now coming to appreciate.

He suggests a number of catalysts for the sudden revival of Smalltalk:

Open source Smalltalks encouraging less vendor lock-in.

An understanding of the importance of Smalltalk to the designers of Python and Ruby.

And of course, the excitement that Seaside has sparked.

Dominique Dutoit has released an F-Script action for Automator. It lets you add custom F-Script code within your Automator processes. You can get it here.

The input of the action (i.e., the output of the previous action) is automatically bound to a variable named "input" in the F-Script workspace. Usually, it is an NSArray object. The output of the action is the value of the last F-Script expression executed in the custom F-Script code (automatically boxed in an NSArray if needed).

You'll need to have the F-Script framework (download here) installed in
/Library/Frameworks/
or
~/Library/Frameworks/
.

Enjoy!

What's new you might ask? Well, besides my fabulous-wonderful-exciting new job, lots of stuff!

First, just like the Phoenix, Dolphin Smalltalk came back from the dead! This is good news, exciting news in fact! You can read about it here! I haven't bought that professional license for nothing finally!

Lots of action in the Smalltalk world. Squeak's popularity grows exponentially (Seaside helps let's say!) and more and more people are coming to the Squeak IRC channel, day after day! There's also a new Squeak fork called Pharo and looking at who's on the Pharo team, you can be sure this thing will succeed (sans l'ombre d'un doute monsieur Ducasse)!

Yep, still working on that baseball project of mine and doing lots of MySQL and benchmarking various stuff (I've been working on some rather heavy and complex ORDER BY optimizations lately, so much that I think I could write an article about it... This is on the could-be-possible list). My hard disk is busy 24/7 these days! While I'm on the database subject, those of you needing some funky SQL stuff might want to buy the excellent book, SQL Hacks. I'd also recommend Baseball Hacks: Tips & Tools for Analyzing and Winning with Statistics to all serious baseball fanatics.

On the pleasant surprise side, I recently came across an excellent DB2 podcast. Even though it primarily targets DB/2 for z/OS, this stuff is excellent, funny, entertaining, really informative and those two experts know their DB/2 stuff inside out. The 2 series of podcasts focus on real solutions to real problems for real-life applications! Emphasis is on performance and it's really educative! Really! A must-hear !

In the musical department, for some reason unknown to myself and to my brain, I keep switching from Death Magnetic (Metallica) to Hard Candy (Madonna). Don't know if that helps coding by it keeps me happy all day long! And let's be honest, anything that is not Hannah Montana related would keep me happy... Three little girls listening to the same songs over and over ain't something you can tolerate for too long, especially when they decide to sing the songs they listen to! On the serious side of music (I'm a HUGE Rush fan!), I can't wait for the DVD of the Snakes & Arrows tour!

Finally, looking at some mathematical stuff for... fun. I have been looking at the "Resta" integer sequence lately and I'm thinking about ways to expand the sequence and discover new terms and how I'd do it algorithm-wise.

On a final note, Trailer Park Boys rules! ;)

P.S. Yes, we do have an election in Canada coming but ours is sooooooooooo boring that we follow the US campaign with a lot more interest! Eh!?! Can we vote?!?!

You can now download F-Script 2.0 alpha 6. It contains the latest developments, including:

Better error detection and reporting when defining new classes

Support in the runtime for subclassing F-Script classes in Objective-C

A literal syntax for hexadecimal numbers (finally!). Standard Smalltalk syntax; e.g.,
16rFF5A
.

Support for using the
~~
message with
nil
as a receiver

Various internal improvements

In addition, there will be a couple of language adjustments in F-Script 2.0, and this alpha contains one of them, as described below.

In F-Script 1.x, equality and inequality operators (i.e.,
=
and
~=
) are provided for all objects. They are implemented in a category of NSObject, and rely on the standard Cocoa
isEqual:
method to determine equality.

This is convenient but leads to a small amount of added conceptual complexity in a few situations related to array programming. Since life is better when even the slightest unneeded complexity is taken away, F-Script 2.0 changes this (remember that F-Script integrates array programming and Cocoa together and we want to do it with zero impedance mismatch). In F-Script 2.0,
=
and
~=
are no longer provided at the NSObject level. The standard generic method for testing objects equality in Cocoa is
isEqual:
, and you can use it with F-Script too.

Of course, just removing
=
and
~=
and be done with it would horribly break compatibility between F-Script 2.x and code written for F-Script 1.x. In addition, we would really miss these nice operators...

Well, don't panic. While these operators are no longer provided by default for all objects, they are implemented for a number of objects, such as NSString, NSNumber, NSDate, NSValue, FSBoolean... This covers the vast majority of current and desirable usage and you can also implement them for your own classes if that make sense.

In addition, F-Script 2.x comes with the magic needed to maintain backward compatibility with existing code in the few remaining cases where your F-Script 1.x code might send
=
or
~=
messages to objects that relied on the default implementation provided by the NSObject category in F-Script 1.x. In such cases, all will work as usual and F-Script will log a warning suggesting you change your code to use
isEqual:
.

If you want to, you can turn off this magic backward compatibility system by using the
MaintainFScript1EqualityOperatorsSemantics
user default, on an per application basis. For instance, to turn it off for the F-Script application, type the following in the Mac OS X terminal:

defaults write org.fscript.fscriptapp MaintainFScript1EqualityOperatorsSemantics NO

To reactivate it, type:

defaults write org.fscript.fscriptapp MaintainFScript1EqualityOperatorsSemantics YES

For the last month or so since the International Smalltalk Developers Conference, I have been busy w

For the last month or so since the International Smalltalk Developers Conference, I have been busy working on the Single Session per VM project trying to get to the point were I can validate the approach. It was straightforward to make the necessary changes to Seaside, but I literally spent more time trying to figure out how to get session affinity to work with FastCGI in lighttpd.

Once I had the basic prototype working I needed to really hammer the server, but neither siege nor jcrawler does a good enough job (siege doesn't crawl a site and jcrawler sends concurrent requests for the same Seaside session) so I started work on a Seaside-aware load testing tool called scrawler. Scrawler needs a a real good HTTP client and the HTTP client (HyHTTPClient) in the latest version of Hyper from Bruce Badger is perfect - which explains why I was porting the latest versions of Sport and Hyper to GLASS last week.

Over the weekend Dario Trussardi reported a problem with MAFileDescription which turned into Bug39648 and a few other GemStone-specific issues related to MAExternalFile model. By Monday, I'd resolved Dario's problem and I figured what the heck, while I was in the neighborhood I might as well merge in the latest Magritte code from Lukas. And while I'm merging code from Lukas, I might as well pick up the latest code for Scriptaculous and Pier.

The ink wasn't even dry on my Pier merge, when I received mail from Doru, announcing Pier 1.0.17. Talk about synchronicity. Had events (spanning the globe) been conspiring all month long to converge at this moment in time?....Nope, but we do have a pending final release for GemStone/S 64 version 2.3, so I got my giddy up on and updated to Pier 1.0.17.

After the smoke cleared, I ended up including a number of new packages in the GLASS package:

Pier-Design-tg.5, Pier-Documents-lr.7, Pier-Google-lr.5, Pier-LightBox-dc.6, Pier-Randomizer-lr.4, Pier-TagCloud-lr.11, Pier-Titles-tg.1, Pier-Twitter-lr.7 Pier-Setup-tg.30 to conform with Pier 1.0.17.

XML-Parser.g-dkh.14 for Pier-Twitter support.

The following bug fixes are also included in this update:

Bug39648 - FileDirectory>>forceNewFileNamed: doesn't ensure creation of subdirectories.

Bug39357 - appliance 1.0 beta10 gems get commit conflicts on first startup.

Bug39413 - 'Magritte implements #description: which interferes with subclass creation'.

fixed duration string generation (RSRSS2) from Philippe Marschall.

MAFileDescription upload problem reported by Dario Trussardi.

The update is published as GLASS-dkh.122 (2.2.5) and GLASS.230-dkh.162 (2.3 beta 2 or 1.0beta10). These two versions can be used with GemStone-jgf.291 (Squeak client) or later. All of the versions can be found in the GLASS project on GemSource. If you are running with a version of the GLASS package that is earlier than GLASS-dkh.118 or GLASS.230-dkh.146, then you need to follow these instructions first. After loading the GLASS package you should evaluate the following two expressions in a workspace:

MADescriptionBuilder initialize.

PRDistribution new register.

The first expression picks up some new initialization code and the second expression installs Pier 1.0.17 as a Seaside application.

In GemStone-obi.293 Gerhard Obermann changed the layout of the Transcript Window to allow more buttons, added a Find Substring button, and arranaged for SHIFT-click on the Debug button to empty the Object Log. Personally, I've moved to this version of the Squeak client as I think it is an improvement.

If you are running in 2.3 beta 2 or 1.0beta10 then you only need to load GemStone-obi.293 into your Squeak client, save the Squeak image and you are done.

If you are running in a 2.2.5 repository then you have a couple of options:

Download the single-click Squeak client for 2.2 (download) from GLASS downloads and then load GemStone-obi.293. RECOMMENDED.

Update your existing Squeak image (presumably using GemStone-dkh.283)

start the Squeak client image.

load GemStone-obi.293.

save the image and exit.

copy (or use a symbolic link) the GCI library (location in top pane of the Login Window) to a file named gciForLinux.so, gciForMacintosh.so or gciForWindows.dll, depending upon your client platform.

restart the image and log in to GLASS.

Keep an eye out for the announcement of the final release of GemStone/S 64 version 2.3 which should be coming soon.

I'm using Wink to create a demo of my new new Squeak/Seaside application that connects talent agencies with advertising agencies. Here is a link to the my demo of how to use our search functionality. It took me about an hour to get used to the demo software (make the mouse movements match up with my desired actions & record audio that matched). I am planning on doing several demos like this one to show users how to perform various actions on the site.

Today evening I attended a conference in Milan. In the aula of the CEFRIEL Liddy Nevile was going to speak about tagging and metadata for social networking, accessibility and spreading the knowledge of both children and teachers basing on the semantic web (starting from tomorow she attends as speaker and as chairman the International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications in Berlin). She spoke about all this and more, also discussing the modalities of the communication today using the English language all over the world. In her opinion -she's Australian- the language spoken in the USA today is particularly difficult and complex, being actually 17th century English :-)

She is also involved in Mitchel Resnick's Scratch project at the MIT Media Lab. Scratch is an interesting visual programming environment written in Squeak, and so in pure Smalltalk, and based on Alan Kay's Etoys. Etoys is pre-installed on all the 100$ laptops of the One Laptop per Child association, and is written in Squeak as well.

Let's hope the new generation of young programmers coming from Etoys or Scratch will be able to return to Smalltalk!

CS4 kommt.

It's going to be brilliant!

C++

SQL
SELECT @munición:=bala FROM pistola WHERE gatillo = ‘JALAR’;
INSERT INTO pierna (pie) VALUES (@ammo);

Perl

Cobol
Usando una PISTOLA COLT 45, APUNTAR arma a PIE.IZQUIERDO, ENTONCES colocar BRAZO.MANO.DEDO en PISTOLA.GATILLO y APRIETA. ENTONCES regresa PISTOLA a FUNDA.

Scheme
(define (disparo arma pie)
(if (null? pie) ()
(disparo arma (car (cdr( pie)))))

Basic

Unix
% ls
pie.c pie.h pie.o dedo.c dedo.o
% rm *.o
rm: .o: No such file or directory
% ls
%

Paradox

Tres Años despues, tu pie vuelve frito.

I mentioned something called a particle accelerator in my message on Sunday, but didn’t have much time to explain it so here you go…

(Just so you know, I only know about this stuff cause I read a lot - I am no expert so don't go citing me in your thesis - I am not a rocket scientist)

Sometime next month, a ring-shaped super-gadget called the Large Hadron Collider will begin shooting particles at each other at just under the speed of light (they started it up last Wednesday). Now at first glance, that might sound like boring science to your average video-gaming youth minister – but I actually think this is kind of an interesting event for Christians. Here are some facts:

1. The LHC is a 17-mile-long circular space-age looking “tunnel” of magnets, metal, wiring, and computers that has been built underground near Geneva on the France/Switzerland border. It took around 20 years to build and the price tag is estimated to be around 5 billion dollars (so far).

2. Its main function is the aforementioned shooting of beams of particles at each other and observing the results… tiny explosions!!! Possibly small black holes?! (this does sound like fun).

3. We have a smaller one in Illinois that does the same thing.

4. Studies have had good benefits and practical applications in the medical field and other places.

5. They are going to try and “recreate” a miniature “big-bang”…

6. They are hoping to prove the existence of the “Higgs boson” particle that they believe gives matter mass (in other words, what makes stuff real).

7. They are looking for additional dimensions (seriously).

8. They are looking for many other unknowns that would point to why and how we exist.

Now normally I wouldn’t be interested in this stuff – science is not my strongest subject – but this is definitely interesting; I’m convinced that science is looking for God and doesn’t know it. Now obviously I don’t believe the same way they do, but I’m happy that they are looking into creation. People want to know where they come from. People want to know why we exist and what makes us who we are. People are curious. And I think that’s a good thing.

Many Christians may be offended by all of it (ever think we get offended to easily?); but I personally can’t wait ‘til they discover evidence of the Creator’s touch in the studies they conduct – even if they call it something else. I just hope and pray they will follow the evidence wherever it leads… And I hope that at the end of it all some scientists will find that it’s a “Who” that holds the universe together rather than a “what.”

Colossians 1:17

I also hope that the thing doesn’t blow up France.

Big thank you’s all around for those that helped with the Fall Kick-Off. Now, no more lock-ins ‘til 2014; I may recover by then :)
