Saturday at Forecastle was a constant assault of great band after great band & for those that missed Saturday, in my eyes, you missed Forecastle. Leading up to Forecastle, when JK asked me who I was most excited for, without a moment of hesitation I replied Snowden. For me, this was a no-brainer. With Jordan leading vocals, and Corrine diverting everyone's attention, these kids make some incredible dance rock, and, as it is far and away my favorite genre of music, it made for an incredible show. If you're a fan of VHS or Beta, and since you're probably from Louisville, then you most certainly are, you need to know Snowden. Virtually every song is an dance anthem....and when Black Eyes starts out....in my eyes, it's impossible to not start moving. Of course, ever to my astonishment, kids in Louisville refuse to dance to dance music, so in the end, one of the best bands of the festival played to a small group of kids with their arms crossed and bobbing their heads at best. How I miss the days of Bedrock @ Metro in London, where kids weren't too cool for the music they liked. In the end, so long as you could detach yourself from the awkwardness of it all, it was a great performance and I hope they'll come back again soon...

Louisville's People Noise was up next & put on a very strong performance. Sadly, this was my first time seeing these guys, but was glad to see a decent few people turned out to see them perform. As everyone knows, these guys do the shoegaze rock thing, and that they do it very well. I sat down with Zeke & Luke afterwards and chatted about life on the road and where their going to next. I think that every band in Louisville needs to look to People Noise as a model for success. In the ever-shifting music industry, the staple is live performances. While every band understands that the most important thing in the beginning is becoming known, whether it means giving your music away or playing for free, few bands have gone to the lengths that People Noise have (Snowden being an exception, actually). People Noise tour relentlessly, which is in large part the cause of the constant shifting line-up. Never content to stay in one place too long, or oversaturate any market, these guys launch full scale tour after full scale tour, and they're getting to play with some pretty incredible bands as a result of it.

Extra Golden was another of the real surprises of the festival. Although I had heard they simply dominated Pitchfork, I had no idea what to really expect. Half from Kenya and Half from America, and having only toured the US once before thanks to Obama, these guys put blues, benga, and americana together and create incredibly fun dance music (at least the hippies dance). Every moment spent playing gave me the impression that they truly felt God was blessing them because they appeared so thankfuk and so happy and alive. It was infectious, and reflected the sense of goodwill, love and hope that Forecastle is all about.

After spending some time in the fountain, we headed off to see Tortoise and their dueling drum kit brand of progressive/post rock. The first thing one notices and appreciates is the two drum kits set up similar to the way a Man Man stage is, up front & facing one another. Mixing kraut, electronica, jazz, and good old fashioned rock, these guys put on an experience for Forecastlers that would be impossible to forget. Louisville has a deeper connection with these guys through our cult heroes David Pajo and Will Oldham, each of whom have spent some time working with Tortoise.

Z Trip, for many, was the culmination of the day. Our friend, Andrew, from Azns n Bnzs, told us that, in large part, Z Trip was the reason he got into DJing. I had heard the mixtapes, but until I saw Z Trip perform his sets live, I hadn't seen or heard anything. The man mixed Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine, Madonaa, Michael Jackson, Johnny Cash, Alice in Chains, Journey and DJ Kool seemlessly. Z Trip was like Girl Talk, but first, and personally, I thought better. Mixing dark and light beats, never more haunting than with Alice in Chains, and never more fun than teasing us with snipets of Michael Jackson or giving audio-strobe effects to Journey which invariably reminded me of the cut of "These Boots are Made for Walking" at thte opening scene of the film Go. The highlight of the performance for me though, was when Z Trip took a moment to acknowledge what JK was doing, and what everyone who showed up was doing, which was taking time to think about the environment and arts. In appreciation of that, he spun one of my favorite Saul Williams tracks "Not in Our Name: The Pledge to Resist" and to hear those kindered spirits out there chanting "not in our name will you erode the very freedoms you have claimed to fight for"...it was a magical moment for me. As he finished his set, the copyright guy in me laughed because he mentioned how he had mixtapes with all of his mash-ups available for free download because he just wanted to give back. Of course, what I heard was that he was sampling tons of other artists and if he tried selling it, they would not be too happy about it. Nevertheless, the performance was incredible, everyone was bouncing and dancing and having an awesome time.

Closing the night was the Disco Bisciuts who seemed to belong more to Sunday than Saturday. For me, along with many of our friends, the transition was too drastic and for all intents and purposes the night ended with Z Trip. I think that it might have financially been the right decision to have Disco Biscuits close the show, because for a lot (and I mean a LOT) of people, these guys were just the cat's PJs, but for me...well, my mother taught me that if I have nothing nice to say, then say nothing at all....

Currently opening up for the great indie rock band Snowden are Colour Revolt (great name!). College kids from Mississippi come together to create quite a nice ebb and flow of chaos with three guitars and a uniquely styled vocalist. Plunder Beg and Curse is the new album — watch the video below for a sample. I love the grotesque artwork that accompanies the album cover and video sampler. Weird shit.

I was going to review Treasure Fingers' remix of Fergie's Glamorous, but then I realized I've been pissing you off enough. And btw, that was funny in two ways.

If you can guess why that was funny in two different ways, then put the answer in the comments section, and stick your e-mail in there. And I'll send you a copy of The Knife's Deep Cuts, I'll just acquire your address from you.. So I can stalk you later, if you be woman. No, but srsly, I'm not joking about the competition.

It's a sort of a riddle, so take good time figuring it out... Okey, it's not THAT hard.

Snowden has a place in my little heart. When everybody was listening to Interpol and Editors, and couldn't really decide which side they were on, I decided that Snowden was better that the two combined.
And come oooon Editors, Joy Division had nothing to with your musical approach?! Oh really?, in that case my mother had nothing to do with giving birth to me.

I have to thank José for recommending this band. It was a good addition to me enjoying the summer. With beer and such.

Snowden has confirmed for Forecastle 2008. This, for me, is the band I may be the most excited for at this moment. I only learned of Snowden last year, and I've been dancing to them continuously ever since. Snowden plays a very danceable sort of disco post-punk, and so I imagine they'll be set for Friday night's performance of Forecastle. Tracks like Black Eyes from their most recent album Anti-Anti are the perfect example of what they can do, putting lyrics like "you didn't have much to say, but you were beautiful anyway" over good dance rock beats makes for the kind of show you want to get sweaty and dance with the girl you want to be with. Due in large part to the heavy touring, Snowden hasn't had a chance to get an album out since their debut Anti-Anti album, but I've heard rumor they've spent a little bit of time in the studio and that we might be able to expect something not too far out. Who cares though, so long as we have anthems like "Anti Anti" to scream out lyrics like "One time we believed, but now it's passing and cliche." Fans of Interpol or VHS or Beta are likely to fall in love with Snowden...as that same dark flavor and fuzzy distortion of Interpol (only not so dark), and the same dance vibe and The Cure influence as pervades VHS or Beta releases...every song from Anti Anti is the type of concert anthem that most bands manage to get one or two of in their career....which makes you understand why Snowden invests so much time into their live shows. In the end, it's dance rock that is incredibly accessible to both the electro kids, and indie rockers...and Louisville has a lot to look forward to with Snowden coming to visit us this summer.

Snowden is known for the incredible effort that they put into touring. Although Atlanta based, people often mistake them for being from any number of cities, considering the number of times they've played everywhere. That includes Louisville. Snowden has come to town at least twice, and played with our friends The Photographic at Uncle Pleasants on August 29, 2006 (with an In-Store Ear X-tacy earlier that same day), and one other occasion at Headliners. Also, another more attenuated connection is that on Snowden's remix album, Fuel of the Celebration, was featured Le Castlevania...who blew up Louisville's Fuzion New Years party this year. Their touring has paid of in recognition from fans, as well as other major musicians, touring with Arcade Fire, The Unicorns, Claps Your Hands Say Yeah, and Kings of Leon. IF all that isn't enough to make you see them...there's a hot girl in the band. Get ready to dance Louisville.....

Pick Anti Anti up from iTunes, Amazon or Jade Tree.

So...yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting D. Solrac for the very first time! She is such a sweetheart & oh so very pretty! We took a trip to Atlanta, GA to see Snowden. A nice man named, Dawit was our cab driver for the evening. This ^ is not a pic of Dawit's cab, but it was a cab that was parked in front of the venue. How very appropriate that we should see a cab with the name, "Morgan" on it. Although, it would have been way cooler if it would have read: "Solrac & Morgan!" We had a fabulous time! There were 2 opening bands that played before Snowden. The first band was called Twin Tiger, and they had a certain shoe-gazer sound going on which is always a good sound to have in my book. They were really, really good, and we gave them the Solrac & Morgan seal of approval. We are thinking of signing them to our up-and-coming record label. Hahaha! Snowden sounded incredible! The show was sold out, but we managed to grab a spot on the front row until...the 3 tallest guys at the show squirmed their way in front of us! Luckily, that didn't last too long, and they were soon on their way back to the bar. Solrac & I anxiously awaited hearing Jordan (lead singer) announce the song Ugg had asked him to dedicate to us, but it didn't happen. I'm sure he probably just forgot (yeah, right). For those of you who don't know, Ugg & Jordan are on e-mailing terms. He even refers to her as "honeychile." So, back to the show...the bass player was on fire! I have never seen a girl play bass quite like she did. She & the lead singer totally went the fuck off a few times, & it was really entertaining to watch. Each member of Snowden are truly talented musicians. This band is well worth checking out if they ever come to a venue near you. Anyway, fun times were had! Click more to see & hear the sounds of Snowden:

Conditions of scarcity often produce more creative results than conditions of abundance.

Men what the ...

- Act-sense-respond
- Look for what works instead of seeking right answers
- Take immediate action to reestablish order (command and control)
- Provide clear, direct communication

Ok I'll try and I'll be back!

Since I bought my laptop in February 2007 I have been adding a lot of new music to my digital collection. I discovered most new music through myspace, bands linking eachother, and via myspace's of labels. With most of these artists I created a crush on one special song of them, this is the list of the 50 most amazing songs I first heard in 2007!

1. Of Montreal – the past is a grotesque animal
2. Snowden – black eyes
3. Laura Veirs – spelunking
4. Keren Ann – lay your head down
5. You Say Party! We Say Die! – opportunity
6. Night Canopy – boom! it’s spring
7. Blood Red Shoes – it’s getting boring by the sea
8. Inara George – fools in love
9. Oh No! Oh My! – I love you all the time
10. St. Vincent – your lips are red
11. Alela Diane – pieces of string
12. El Perro Del Mar – this loneliness
13. Electrelane – in berlin
14. Envelopes – it is the law
15. Scanners – lowlife
16. Jesca Hoop – havoc in heaven
17. Susanna & The Magical Orchestra – love will tear us apart
18. Alina Simone – saw-edged grass
19. Erase Errata - cruising
20. The Tiny – dirty frames
21. Operator Please – just a song about ping pong
22. The Gossip – standing in the way of control
23. Broadcast – corporeal
24. M83 – a guitar and a heart
25. Division Kent – monsterproof
26. The Bastard Fairies – we’re all going to hell
27. De Novo Dahl – dinosaurs!
28. April March – chick habit
29. The Oohlas – across the stars in blue
30. Good Shoes – morden
31. The Long Blondes – only lovers left alive
32. Midnight Movies – oh twilight
33. Autolux – here comes everybody
34. Pony Up! – what’s free is yours
35. The Chalets – feel the machine
36. Dave Gahan – kingdom
37. The Pleased – we are the doctor
38. Two Ton Boa – cyanide
39. The Bird And The Bee – I hate camera
40. Wendy McNeill – such a common bird
41. The Ditty Bops – nosy neighbor
42. Silversun Pickups – common reactor
43. Peter Bjorn and John – young folks
44. Marissa Nadler – bird on your grave
45. Women And Children – virginia creepers
46. Mommy And Daddy – a good deal
47. My Latest Novel – when we were wolves
48. The Willowz – what’s wrong is right
49. White Rabbits – the plot
50. The Victorian English Gentlemens Club – stupid as wood

I think most songs don't originate from 2007 releases, but that wasn't the point, was it? This is in my opinion one of the most remarkable list of songs I've ever put together, mostly because I'm loser at choosing best songs. Luckily my musical memory helped me a bit in finding out which song it was of certain artists that appealed most to me. Recently discovered music was a bit of a hassle, like White Rabbits, The Pleased and Marissa Nadler, that's also why they're lower on the list.
I'm now going to think if I can possibly think of even more music lists for 2007, maybe of certain genres... Though that would require me to find out the genres of all those artists, which won't be easy for many of them. Ah well, I can always try.

Pointless editorial-White Christmas, both the song and the movie, hold a special place in my heart.

Pointless editorial-White Christmas, both the song and the movie, hold a special place in my heart. I hate musicals. When I'm cajoled into watching one, it inspires in me nothing but pure violence--I have visions of leaping onto stage, punching chorus members in the face until they stop belting their insipidly cheery little hearts out as security tries to take me down. The only existing exceptions to the musical red flag rule--White Christmas (1954) (and The Sound of Music-1965) and then only in film, never in live performance. So....

In hopes of a White Christmas, here are a few versions of the song Bing Crosby made famous including the version by the man himself. (Setting aside, of course, the fact that the man was an ultraconservative freak...uh...and that the song first came to prominence in Holiday Inn.)

Aimee Mann-her timing, delivery, and tempo come together to produce something with a melancholy, slightly ominous bent. me likes.

The Flaming Lips-an odd combination of whimsy and macabre i don't entirely dislike

Bright Eyes--it's bright eyes...i have visions of little children in christmas sweaters seated around her.

Snowden-for those out there trying not to be despressed...but not really caring if they fail. love it.

The Pipettes-the candy coated vocals usually appropriate for this time of year are wet blanketed by an overbearingly obtrusive organ. i never thought anything could make me hate this song. this does the trick.

traditional-it amazes me each year I dig these out...that no, it really doesn't ever get old.

Otis Redding

Patti Smith

Michael Buble

Diana Krall

Ella Fitzgerald

and finally, the version that inspired them all...(listening to bing's voice is like watching fred astaire dance).

:-) :-)

So, even though Christa is usually the one dropping the Deerhunter name in half of her posts, I just wanted to take a moment to direct people to the show tomorrow night at Variety Playhouse. It's probably going to be awesome. However, due to the fact that I am officially 9 months pregnant, I think I'm going to have to skip it.

The show is a celebration for Stomp and Stammer's 11th Anniversary, and the bill is pretty awesome. Of course, it is all of Atlanta's darling bands: Deerhunter, Black Lips, Snowden and The Selmanaires. Pretty serious stuff if you ask me. And the tickets are cheap, only $15 before you get slammed with the dumbass Ticket Master fees. The show is at 8:30 tomorrow night, and I'm sure it will be awesome. Maybe people will be wearing some of American Apparel's new line of gold lame crap. Or even the hot pink tight jeans I saw at Urban Outfitters. Here's some ideas to get you going (camel toe is optional):

Amsterdam.

"So, Nicko. What have you been listening to?" Good question. I've been listening to all of these songs. All at the same time on multiple audio players while drinking lysol. Really clears the senses. Now time for another audio overload. Later I might throw some underground hip hop classics down, seeing that I have my hard drive back up again.

Shinichi Osawa, you've made quite a name for yourself. You're my favorite Japanese producer. You are all over my iTunes, but for some reason you've never had your own focal-point post. That's ok. Everybody else has done it already, so I'll save that one for your next release, or for some big news.

Soulwax - Miserable Girl (Shinichi Osawa Extra Hard Edit)

Shinichi Osawa - The Patch

Plaid - Whites Dream (Shinichi Osawa Remix)

Where has "Saloperie de Minimale" been hiding? Right from the beginning it sounds like it might be mislabeled. Humble and minimal until that first drop. Toxic Avenger creates a dreamy, fist pounding electro banger here with tiny periods of narcolepsy throughout. A very interesting piece. The Snowden & Dragonette tracks had to be included. You could take a Snowden track, lower the quality, reverse it and send it to me and I'd still gush over it. Thank you, KissAtlanta.

The Toxic Avenger - Saloperie De Minimale

Dragonette - Take It Like A Man (The Toxic Avenger Remix)

Snowden - Kill The Power (The Toxic Avenger Remix)

Gorilla.

Back to Australia. ZZZ caught my ear a little bit ago. If it's not heavy keyboard intros with "Lion" it's super-choppy schizophrenic edits with Surkin and Mehdi. The Beats for Beginners mixup is another winner. I really dig the artwork they use, too. There's something unique about the sound & style that they orchestrate.

ZZZ - Lion

Beats For Beginners - Lazer Beams For Eyes (Beats Vs ZZZ Remix)

Surkin - Ghetto Explosion (ZZZ Remix)

Lies In Disguise is everywhere, on the internet and geographically. Multiple dates in select countries all over the map. And with only one track, I'm surprised how quickly it's spread around here. I had no idea that Le Castle Vania was so popular (alongside Blake Miller of Moving Units- what a combo). Can anybody else see Beavis & Butthead headbanging to this one in front of their TV? It's also tight that they circulated a 320 bitrate copy. Now I have to give a little love.

Party Shank - Penis VS Vagina (Lies In Disguise Remix)

Moving Units - Crash 'N' Burn Victims

Crookers.

Crookers are exploding like a volcano, and I'm standing at the base of Mt. Vesuvius ready to be frozen in time spazzing. I'm not quite sure what that means. But I know that I mean it. They hang with The Bloody Beetroots. And they're dope. If you read my posts frequently enough, they need no introduction by now. And they have a cool little drawing that explains everything. They're like punk rock pirates with turntables or something. I don't know.. Honestly, I've been on my computer for too long. I need a smoke break.

Bumblebeez - Dr. Love (Crookers Remix)

Carnifull Trio - Song For Guido (Crookers Crunk Mix)

Crookers - Lick My Lennon (The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

And here's a little wind-down. If you haven't been able to tell by now, I'll eat up any Bloc Party remix/edit/whatever that I find. The Final Fantasy track is great, and there is an awesome video on youtube of him covering "This Modern Love". Look to the comments and watch these guys begging for an MP3 of it. Haha. So talented. The originals get a lot of justice here. And I feel the same way about the Smashing Pumpkins cover, too, though you won't ever find me listening to Kweller otherwise. Enjoy & have a great day.
