Today I didn't eat enough, but I did have a couple of buckwheat pancakes that I made without the sugar and with an extra egg, and some vanilla added to the batter of a store-bought mix. They came out great, and I put a blop of Greek-style yogurt on top and some sliced kiwi, peach and banana. Normally I would either, a) skip the pancakes or, b) eat 3 or 4 of them with lots of butter and syrup. I'm learning the joys of compromise and moderation, and starting to leave behind my 'all-or-nothing' mentality. It's finally starting to become more natural for me.

I've also noticed I'm not as impulsive and I'm slowly shedding my unnecessary perfectionism. I washed my car today - normally I'd be scraping off every little dot of tar on the bottom of my doors with my finger nails and being compulsive about drying every last drop so I don't get spots, cleaning all the windows inside and out and also all the door frames... nevermind vacuuming, dusting, wiping down every surface... needless to say, it turns washing the car into an event of a few HOURS. Today I just soaped it up, rinsed and sprayed some tire foam on the tires after I scrubbed off my rims. I missed a spot or two here and there and had to stop myself and think, "it doesn't matter. Leave it..." and I did after a few deep breaths. lol

Now, if only I could get my ass to bed at a reasonable hour, everything else would just be easier... waking up, getting a full workout in before work and actually getting to work on time... I think now that I have my eating habits elevated to higher standards, it's time to tackle my sleeping standards. 6 hours does not cut it.... [and it's 12:48 am right now on a 'school night'... time to sign off!!!].  ;)

This is Puzzling to most. If this is puzzling to you too ? Here are some answers: the rest you need to discover: not ask:

1. Δ Google ( ie. change is Google ) = Relevancy + someone trying to trick Google.
2. Δ AOL can be explained by one line ( Powered by Google does not equal Google) + Latency
3. MSN's Live Search is still the same : WHY -> Answer: lies in the fact that Microsoft obeys Newton's First Law

What's the bottom-line? Well, a few -> and here they are:

1. Google is fast

2. Yahoo Catches Up

3. MSN is the dinosaur

4. AOL is powered by Google - but still powered by Intelligence doesn't make you intelligent. Or does it?

Now, whats the big deal ? you may ask: Well, here it is:

1. Its not a big deal. Its a few Billion Dollar Deal.
2. If everything minus Google = latency = time delay = Slow..Then what does the customer do? --> You don;t know? What? - You dont know that you have a remote control - its called Mouse?
3. What happens when you skip ? -> The engine stops making money. A few Billions is at stake.

Now, do you understand -> whay Microsoft wants to be Micro-Hoo? If its not clear. Then ask yourself the following:

1. What is your age ?
2. What does DELAY mean to you?
3. Can you Feel what delay means to you?  ( You = the user on the net = customer)
4. If you were a Kangaroo -> doing the daily Hop -> Skip -> Jump ( or Search -> Scan -> Click, how long would you like to keep on leaping?)

Here is the feeling - the vibrations for you. Now, next time, someone asks you to describe the WHY of the WHY of the WHy of the search wars : say two things: Latency + I = this video.. and you would be more right than any analyst or an MBA> yeah even an elite MBA: And if they force you to use a metaphor -> just say : " I am a Kangaroo -> who wants to lie low..and  then go.. :)

If you think coming up with the next million dollar is challenging, correct selection for the name of your business is not going to be any easier. A name formulates the foundational base of your entire business. It communicates what you do to your target segment, what differentiates you from the competition and is ideally meant to instigate curiosity to find out more. A logical argument often used against this methodology of thinking, is that names such as Google, Amazon and Monster do very little to reflect what they do, yet, they have become mega brand names. The fact of the matter is, the businesses mentioned above were pioneering companies which revolutionized internet search, online shopping and online recruiting. They are built on very sound business models and due to the sheer superiority of their products/services they have become household names today.

Getting the name game right is something I have been giving more time towards, in my more recent ventures. We named our first design agency "Synaptic Creations". I am not a biology student but picked up the word from a friend who told me synapses were the gap between two neurons, over which impulses lead to learning. It made sense at the time and we went with it. The word creations however, is too generic and reduced the ability for us to expand into other areas as well. It also confused some individuals who thought we may be some genetic based start-up. The name would fail several of the benchmarks I now have, for appropriate names for a business. It is important is to learn from mistakes made in the past to help you get it right the next time.

Most of the time, start-ups have to select their own name unless you have managed to secure some major early stage funding. If you have I would recommend NameLab or similar brand name consultants. If you are on your own, there are basic guidelines, namely, keep it short, keep it simple, avoid generic terms, the name should be easy to pronounce and spell and, should be unique. I do advocate a structured process to help you think in a more focused manner, which will in turn help you in deciding on a name which has been looked at from all angles, and has had major thought put into it.

Firstly, we need to think through the space we will operate in. Use questions to get your team thinking along the same wave lengths. These could include:

1. What would be the word you would want customers to associate your business with?

2. Who are you target customers?

3. What are the unique components of your business model?

4. How are you different from your competition?

5. What words best describe what your business does?

6. What emotions do you want your name to instigate in the customer?

Develop similar questions based on your business concept, and come up with as many permutations as possible by mixing and matching. Create a filtered list of names which passes the basic guidelines. If possible do a focus group or collect feedback from friends and family on the names you have shortlisted. This process will take a lot of time, so plan in advance for it so that there is no need to make a rushed selection. This is a name you are going to have to live with for a long time, you need to make it count!

The Japanese are particular about things; they understand the "soul" of things.

We aim to develop products with soul. The idea that products have soul is perhaps only understand by the Japanese, the French and the Italians. The reason why the Japanese understand it is, I think, because they have such a long history of tradition. There are Japanese craftsmen who spend years perfecting lacquerware. Others protect the 1,500 year tradition of using red dye from the safflower. Others still are attempting new experiments using 21st century technology with traditional colors. And there are many people who are called "living national treasures". The Japanese are particular about things. They like to embark on new adventures and think about the next idea while still retaining the soul of things. Of course, not all consumers are "living national treasures". But this kind of thing is understood at DNA level. The Japanese are sensitive to things. They understand the goodness of our products, beyond their appearance or brand image. And for that reason, I think they are an important market for us.

Japan is roughly the size of Montana in land area, and has about 127 million inhabitants (roughly one-third of the USA). And, they are obsessed with luxury goods. They consume 41% of the worlds luxury sales in 2006. Thus, when the Japanese customer is not satisfied with threads hanging from their newly purchased outfits, it makes sense for the luxury goods companies to pay attention.

The Japanese define quality in two ways - atarimae hinshitsu and miryokuteki hinshitsu. The first term atarimae hinshitsu, refers to the expectation that the item works the way it was intended. Miryokuteki hinshitsu means "bewitching" or "enchanting quality" and refers to the desirability or aesthetic appeal of the product. In essence, by focusing on both, you ensure your product works the way a customer wants and is also desirable to have (it has soul).

If your customers won't tolerate hanging threads, should anyone on your team? Learn from your most demanding customers, and ensure everyone in your organization is focused on exceeding those changing expectations. This is the only way I know to drive long term sustainability.

I put my name on it like the instructions said and I
started sending it out", says the clever 15-year-old.

The E-mail letter listed 5 addresses and contained
instructions to send one $5 dollar bill to each person on
the list, then delete the address at the top and move the
others addresses Down, and finally to add your name to the
top of the list.

The letter goes on to state that you would receive several
thousand dollars in five-dollar bills within 2 weeks if you
sent out the letter with your name at the top of the
5-address list. "I get junk E-mail all the time,and really
did not think it was going to work", the boy continues.

Within the first few days of sending out the E-mail, the
Post Office Box that his parents had gotten him for his
video-game magazine subscriptions began to fill up with not
magazines, but envelopes containing $5 bills.

"About a week later I rode [my bike] down to the post
office and my box had 1 magazine and about 300 envelops
stuffed in it. There was also a yellow slip that said I had
to go up to the [post office] counter.

I thought I was in trouble or something (laughs)". He goes
on, "I went up to the counter and they had a whole box of
more mail for me. I had to ride back home and empty out my
backpack because I could not carry it all".

Over the next few weeks, the boy continued sending out the
E-mail."The money just kept coming in and I just kept
sorting it and stashing it in the closet, barely had time
for my homework".He had also been riding his bike to
several of the banks in his area and exchanging the $5
bills for twenties, fifties and hundreds.

"I didn't want the banks to get suspicious so I kept riding
to different banks with like five thousand at a time in my
backpack. I would usually tell the lady at the bank counter
that my dad had sent me in to exchange the money and he was
outside waiting for me.One time the lady gave me a really
strange look and told me that she would not be able to do
it for me and my dad would have to come in and do it, but I
just rode to the next bank down the street (laughs)."

Surprisingly, the boy did not have any reason to be afraid.
The reporting news team examined and investigated the
so-called "chain-letter" the boy was sending out and found
that it was not a chain-letter at all.In fact, it was
completely legal according to US Postal and Lottery Laws,
Title 18, Section 1302 and 1341, or Title 18, Section 3005
in the US code, also in the code of federal regulations,
Volume 16, Sections 255 and 436, which state a product or
service must be exchanged for money received.

Every five-dollar bill that he received contained a little
note that read, "Please send me report number XYX".This
simple note made the letter legal because he was exchanging
a service (A Report on how-to) for a five-dollar fee.

I would add that pitching is not the only practice that should be updated or replaced, but isn't. On the internal side, there is a similar blind spot about several old favorites, notably the archetypal newsletter and ubiquitous "core values." (I'm not suggesting all these tactics be thrown out, but that any tactical plan be started on a blank slate and that suggestions be justified and probed.) This inertia is troubling given that PR - particularly the agency side - should be the profession that is leading the way, not hanging on for dear life and flirting with irrelevance. There is hope that the newer generations - already tech-literate and familiar with new social media tools - can bring a fresh outlook to the table, but that assumes their education and training is equally contemporary, and I'm not sure that's the case. But that's a topic for another  post....

As a student of military history, one of the many things that I find so fascinating about Sherman's march is that its destructive power encourages its consideration as "total war" a la Clausewitz. Can't wait to dig in to this one.

For those of you in the Chicago area, Mr. Trudeau's publisher Harper Collins, indicates that he will be publicizing his book at the following on Thursdays.

The backbone of evaluation in the United States academic system is based on letters, five of them to be exact.  "A" through "F" (most schools don't use "E").  The "A" stands for some sort of excellence, as the "F" merits failure.  The reason we don't use "E", is because "E" can be confused for something being excellent, when an "E" really means failure.  It was appropriately obtrusive so use the "F."

It's typically a very formulated system to achieve the grade of your choice.  I didn't say it was easy, but it is more or less systematic.  It includes memorizing a set of facts prior to examination taking advantage of short-term memory.  Cram it in, and spit it out.

Universities discriminate based on high school GPA, and corporations performing on-campus recruiting use similar procedures  It's a system that's generally beatable, which some attribute to their success.

What's wrong with it?  Nothing, I suppose.  The better question to ask is, what's missing?

It's the realization principle.  It's not what you memorize in a short time span to plug into a multiple choice exam.  It's what you take with you.

It's what you apply.  It's what you use.  It's what you reflect.  It's what you share.  It's what you think.

Anyone can take a few facts and spit them out.  Less can take a few facts and form their own opinion.  Realizing applicable information and loading it into your tool set isn't the same as memorizing information that you'll sweat out on your walk back from the exam.

So what do you actually know?  What do you think you know?  Probably a whole lot less than you can imagine.

In addition to this blog, I should at the end have 5 pages of text and examples of every tool and enough material for 1-2 hours training and 2-3 hours workshop on each topic.

I will start from Project management, since the very first thing I need to do is to fill in my first tool: 1 page project plan. And then follow it. If I will draft one best practice a week, I should have them all blogged before summer of 2007. But then I only have a draft for which I ask comments from my friends and colleagues - and from anybody interested, since this is a public blog! I plan to have the whole toolbox ready by summer of 2008 with the help of your comments.

Quoting Venezuela's naval intelligence director, Salbarore Cammarata, the newspaper Vea said four Russian boats would visit Venezuelan waters from November 10 to 14.

Plans for the naval operations come at a time of heightened diplomatic tension and Cold War-style rhetoric between Moscow and the United States over the recent war in Georgia and plans for a U.S. missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland.

Cammarata said it would be the first time Russia's navy carried out such exercises in Latin America. He said the Venezuelan air force would also take part.

Chavez, who buys billions of dollars of weapons from Russia, has criticized this year's reactivation of the U.S. Navy's Fourth Fleet, which will patrol Latin America for the first time in over 50 years.The socialist Chavez says he fears the United States will invade oil-rich Venezuela and he supports Russia's growing geopolitical presence as a counterbalance to U.S. power.

So, I will kick my brand New blog off with a couple of quick snippets of what you can expect!

The important insight for Start Ups and investors is this:

The boring stuff is almost always more profitable than the sexy.

Why: Because exciting, sexy stuff attracts lot's of competitors and people want to play there. They want to play there because it's fun, it's in the papers, it's featured in business forums and leverages over-riding social trends. Then it gets busy and the cream disappears - (read here abnormal economic profits) . It's no different to the house prices rising in popular suburbs and the yield declining. Simple economics discovered centuries ago.

So what? It's vital we know the difference between sustainable & exciting. The most important factor for survivial is profit - end of story. Sure, profits can be made in any industry, but chances are there's more profit in the areas everyone else forgot about.

Yesterday we looked at goals - have you decided what yours is yet?  Once you have a goal in place it i important to "get it out there" so that people can help you achieve it.  SHould you develop a networking strategy?  What exactly is a networking strategy? Why do you need one? Is networking really that important?

Consider these two scenarios and tomorrow we'll :look at the strategy behind effective networking:

Sally has just started her own business. She is convinced that she is too busy to network. She spends her time working in the business, not on the business – an age-old problem – and networking gets pushed to the bottom of her ‘to do’ list.

She finally makes time to go along to the local Chamber of Commerce function – just to show her face. She arrives late and flustered, in time to hear the speaker being introduced, and sits at the back of the room. After the event, aware that she only has a limited amount of time to network, she races around introducing herself to as many people as possible. The next day she spends a demoralising session cold-calling potential clients; and she never again hears from any of the people she met the previous evening.

Olivia manages a department within a large company and is well aware that networking has been critical to her success. She has been attending two networking events regularly and knows the hosts of each quite well. She chose her networking groups carefully, researching the events and the calibre of people who attend them.

One morning she arrived at a breakfast event early and met Jenny, a ‘first-timer’, over coffee as guests were registering. The two women spent quality time getting to know each other: Olivia learnt that Jenny had recently started her own executive coaching company and although she had no use for a coach (her company offers a coaching and mentoring program) she listened with great interest to Jenny’s story and took Jenny under her wing for the duration of the event. Olivia introduced herself and Jenny to the guests at her table and initiated a discussion on a news article she had read the previous day.  

At the end of the event, the host introduced another person, Karen, to Olivia. Karen had been attending for a while and the host had just learnt that Karen was in a complementary industry to Olivia and thought the two should meet. Olivia, Karen and Jenny had a great chat over coffee in a nearby café after the breakfast and agreed to meet up again at the next month’s event. 

The following day, Olivia received a call from Jenny to thank her for making the event so comfortable and enjoyable. Jenny mentioned that she had been speaking to a number of people about the great time she had at the breakfast and that many of them were interested in coming along to the next one. Olivia told Jenny that while she was speaking to her husband about the new friend she met at the breakfast, she discovered that his company is looking for a coach to head up a training program and asked whether Jenny would be interested in pitching for the business. 

The following month, Olivia, Karen and Jenny met at the breakfast along with Jenny’s four new guests. Over time, Karen and Olivia became alliance partners and grew each other’s businesses substantially. Jenny became an advocate for Olivia’s business and referred numerous potential clients. Jenny, Karen and Olivia continue to meet many new people at the breakfast events; business referrals bounce around between the three women and their contacts – and their contact’s contacts – on a regular basis. Olivia has not had the need to cold call a client in months.

Which scenario would you prefer?
