Recognition in the U.S., that is.

One idea I have as a dream job is as a Tintin scholar, and this would be the perfect time, he's everywhere...

"Tintin in Tibet" was given to me by my father when I was about 11 years old, and I've been a fan of Hergé (née Georges Remi) ever since. Tintin's adventures always involve international intrigue, solving obscure riddles, and outsmarting very cunning villains. According to Tom McCarthy in Tintin and the Secret of Literature, the twists of plot and characterization found in the Tintin stories are enough to lead us to a definition of Literature while having a lot of fun mining the depths of the psyche that created the stories. The seemingly light-hearted adventures starring Tintin and Haddock hide far darker, richer symbols and themes, many of which could not have been unknown to the author.

While I love the stories, it is probably the crisp, clean, ligne claire style that I enjoy most about these graphic novels (imitated to perfection by cartoonist Joost Swarte, among many others). As such an essential characteristic of the books, I'm interested to see how it is rendered in Spielberg's motion-capture film series, the first of which is due to be released in 2009. Andy Serkis, best known as Golem in The Lord of the Rings films, is confirmed to play Haddock - just check out his gruff portrayal of record producer Martin Hannett in 24-Hour Party People (2002) of which my favorite line has to be (paraphrased): "I'm a genius, you're all wankers, you'll never see me again...you don't deserve to see me again."

I pulled him into my lap to check it out and he squirmed around to watch the video on the laptop next to me. He watched the entire 10 minutes, 18 seconds, lying quietly in my lap. He sometimes watches TV, too. Fred was not interested in TV at all. If I let Rusty watch TV, will that hamper his intellectual growth or enhance it? Hmmm. Maybe we should buy a video on housebreaking your puppy.

I've never really appreciated Tintin too much. Perhaps I haven't spent enough time in Belgium to get it but I just don't have any real affection for the character, unlike for example Barbarpapa who I adore. Maybe it's a gender thing.

Anyway there is a small piece in The Irish Times today about a new Spanish book which Herge's estated have persuaded the publishers to withdraw as apparently it was creating a new racier older version of Tintin - more tabloid hack than intrepid fresh faced investigator. I can't really see what all the fuss is about! It reminds me of that recent issues that David and Achuka both picked up on about children's books writers been offered contracts which penalise them if their personal lives damage their book sales. It's that age old debate about whether you can separate art from artist and perhaps when I'm a ripe old age I'll be able to figure that one out!

This was the cover art for "Tintin in the new World" by Frederic Tuten.

But carping is absurd when dealing with a novel so richly inventive and so subtly textured. Who can resist a text that interpolates Snowy's thoughts and canine romances into the running narrative, that drops certain corny paragraphs into quotation marks in order to suggest their bogus novelistic tone, but that somehow remains -- dare I say it? -- sincere?

But on Friday at a hotel in Palo Alto, Calif., a pair of Bigfoot hunters say they will present what they contend is the most definitive proof yet of an animal that science says does not exist: DNA evidence and photographs of a dead specimen they say they found in a remote swath of woods in northern Georgia."It was very frightening at first," said Rick Dyer, 31, a former corrections officer who - coincidentally - runs a business that offers Bigfoot tours. "And it got even more frightening when you saw the others."

Indeed, Mr. Dyer said he and his partner, Matthew Whitton, saw three more of the beasts nearby as they dragged the body of said creature out of the woods. Moreover, Mr. Dyer says he has video clips and photographs to prove it.

One photograph provided to the news media showed what resembled a gorilla - or maybe an old sheepskin rug - lying twisted in a freezer, with a dollop of intestines protruding from its belly.

Jadi mengerti dong mengapa saya suka Asterix...demi Toutatis!

Soal tentang Manga favorit saya? nanti saya tulis kapan-kapan yah...

Life’s quite comical.

One day, seeing my colleague plunged neck deep into a Hindi comics, I had to borrow the lot.

Just to catch up on the stories I had missed in all those growing-up years, I suspended all my official activities. Before the day concluded, I had completed my whirlwind adventure into the once-familiar universe of characters.

Back then, two of my absolute favourites were - Chacha Chowdury, the common man’s genius, whose brain works faster than a computer; and Nagaraj, the shape-shifting snakeman, whose venomous breath can melt even iron. Of course, there was the dare devilry of Super Commando Dhruv, the scheming wit of Bankelal, the innocent simplicity of Billoo and Pinki, and many more loveable characters – each with their own magnetic world.

“Look, I got it first! The latest comics from Lajpat Nagar, its available nowhere else”, my best friend had teased me once. At that time, the defeat was difficult to digest. I remember spending rest of the week convincing him to lend me that comics. Atlast, a deal was struck – his one comics in exchange for three of mine. What a magical ‘read-till-you-drop’ era that was!

From class 7 through 10, my enviable collection of Hindi comics, stuffed mercilessly in a dilapidated green bag, was touching 300. Having re-read each one of them countless times, the juice in them had dried up.

Then studies caught up; with Biology and Physics taking over the chemistry of reading. My nephew inherited some of these priceless wonders. The rest of them were disposed by my mother to the kabadiwallah for a princely sum of 98 rupees. A big, moist chunk of my heart too went along.

Ahhh...A comics in hand is truly worth all the joys of the world.

Comics painted the canvas of my childhood with colours of curiosity. After a rollercoaster ride through the marvels of Indrajal, Enid Blyton, Amar Chitra Katha, Asterix and Tintin, I have now made friends with the enigmatic Harry Potter.

I wish to devour some delicious comics before this Independence Day, just to set free once more the imagination of the cute, charismatic child within!

Tintin and Snowy by Jeff Lemire, kicking things off with a bang

It's alive! My Tintin sketchbook was born at San Diego this summer -- I'd been wanting to start one for a while, jealous of Brett's Kirby book and Sean's Bowie book. Since they had those themes sewn up, I went for Tintin characters - a pretty safe choice, beloved by the highbrow critics but also by the inner ten-year-old in all of us, famous but also somehow underexposed in American comics circles. Reading Tintin albums from the public library was one of my formative early comics experiences, and probably shaped my conviction that comics can be truly populist and still good.

Since this was largely a business con for me, I didn't get the book into as many hands as I might have liked, but hey, that's what the next ten years are for. There's a natural preponderance of Top Shelf artists and friends, since they were readily at hand... but I never could get Andy Runton away from his adoring fans long enough to grace the pages. Next time, Runton...

Anyway, click here for the goodness.

Quel soldat me direz-vous ?

This week has been very busy.

Monday - Cycling at ECP with Tintin
(My ass still smarts from the stupid design of the triangular seat. WHY SO HARD?! WHY SO SHARP?!)
Tuesday - Friends of Juan gathering at school
(Finishing up Salsa Guy's goat)
Wednesday - Singapore Garden Festival with Tintin
(The festival ended today. Which was a pity, because the exhibition was quite marvelous. And cold.)
Thursday - Friends of Juan gathering at school
(We finished the vomiting goat! It looked pretty awesome)
Friday - Bix's birthday celebration at Cash with Shasha, Ruru, and Jo
(We brought in Pizza!!! AND WE GOT EXTENSION!!! ON A FRIDAY!!!)
Saturday - Shopping with Ade
(hopefully Ade will be doing the shopping while my purse remains unmolested)
(highly unlikely though XDD)
Sunday - Aero hunting with Senpai
(I really don't know what to expect. How come her job sounds so fun and un-job-like? Haha!)

Wah lau, My leg and back muscles already ache very much now. Msss (which stands for: mai siao siao sia)

Is this some kind of ploy to make me sink into fatigue right before the new semester starts?

BUT TOO BAD FOR YOU CONSPIRATORS, BECAUSE I HAVE NO SCHOOL ON MONDAY! HAR HAR HAR. Pleasedon'tjiomeoutonMondayplease.

I've been looking through the subjects offered in other universities for the exchange programme and the results are dismal. It seems like we won't be making full use of the time we spend there accumulating relevant credits, and would probably have to overload when we come back. Like that how. Very disadvantageous for art students ley.

No wonder the previous batch of exchange candidates did so much homework trying to find subjects that matched last semester. What a horrible waste of time <s>when I could be reading more manga</s>.

"When you look at me - because I'm wearing a singlet, do you think that I have an eating problem?" I asked Pa over Subway dinner.

He gave this serious look. I can't decide if it was a look of consternation or a mix of a sneer and... whatever it is when someone is about to chide someone else. Without missing a beat, he said yes. Twice.

And then he launched into a tirade of how skinny I was, and that I needed to build up my muscles by exercising, and to broaden my shoulders, and ended with a warning that if I didn't do that (exercise) a small illness would kill me.

......... OTL

My legs ached a lot today. It's probably due to the intense cycling Tintin and I did at East Coast Park yesterday (Covering in a record 105 minutes, the exact distance Ade, Puey and I covered the last time).

But it makes the dull aches more bearable if I think of it as growing pains XD

Men då ursäktar man verket.

I actually forgot about spending Sunday with Tintin because he said he wanted to go check out this place which sold old cameras. But I was duped. I thought he knew a shop which sold second-hand cameras. What he actually meant was that the place was full of second-hand booths and we would be searching for cameras among the various knick knacks. Haha!

Anyway, I never knew there was such a place in Singapore... China Square - It's like a mini Akiba.

But first, lunch. Lunch was in Chinatown. We had no idea what to eat so we took a gamble and went into this bustling eatery (a very active and bordering on obnoxious balding floor manager) for dim sum. The food was horrible. I kept laughing because this was the first time I'd tasted dim sum so horrible. The Har Gao was eww. Siew Mai was eww. Carrot cake was eww.

This week's guest blogger is Laurent Vernhes, co-founder of the travel Web site Tablet Hotels. Vernhes, who was born in France and lived in half a dozen countries before settling down in Brooklyn, founded Tablet in 2000 as way of helping stylish, culturally-attuned travelers find hotels to match. The site's tight edit of properties spans high and low, includes opinionated commentary and ratings, and is showcased annually in a hard-cover guide. Read Vernhes's previous posts here.

Perhaps yesterday's death notice for guide books is a bit premature. At the current rate of production, we’re probably killing off forests faster than we’re burying paper travel guides. To my continual amazement, new guidebook series are being created all the time. Just this year, in English alone, I discovered five that I had never heard of. I’m at a loss to explain it. Perhaps a general sense of the current vulnerability of guidebooks is driving entrepreneurs and writers to try to reinvent them. The upside of guide books’ resilience, in addition to a bit of job security for travel writers, is that even though there’s no fun at all in flying anymore, people’s appetite for travel still seems to be quite healthy.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the future of the guidebook is in the mobile internet. Guides are just filters of information, and in a world of guide overload, we need filters for our filters. Some day soon your iPhone will have a guidebook function — it has books in there already. A quick visit to Wikipedia from your smart phone will give you more historical background than any Lonely Planet book ever could — but will still leave you at a loss for recommendations. Google’s maps are fine for raw unfiltered data but aren’t much help in decision making, and sites like Citysearch or Yelp, with their conflicts between editorial and advertising, just aren’t trustworthy enough.

The great online guide of the future will have the integrity and the reliability of sources that the better guidebooks are already known for, and it will be more up to date. The hard part is compelling but simple functionality that goes beyond directory listings, the kind that makes you wonder how you got on with life before it existed — and nobody online is anywhere close to that yet. We have been working on our own online guides for nearly two years now and are getting close to a beta version. If it’s successful, Tablet Guides will be obvious and familiar to you in the first two minutes, and then I can finally move on from my obsessive love-hate relationship with the guidebook industry.

Whether or not that happens, I believe the day will come when the guidebook industry is absorbed by the internet. And I’ll still have my favorite guides — the Tintin stories. Those images are still imprinted on my mind, at a depth I don’t think the internet can ever reach. When I finally get to Greenland or Antarctica (the last of the Tintin destinations I haven’t yet compared with reality) my benchmark won’t be Lonely Planet, but L’Étoile Mystérieuse.

Enough of my rambling on this subject — now it’s your turn. As this discussion is hosted by the New York Times, let’s put our heads together on what would be the ultimate guide to New York City and how it would work. What places would you recommend and how would you make it more than just a directory?
Forfatter: Jeff Smith
Hylle: Tegneserier (andre etasje)
Antall sider: ca 1300 i komplett utgave
