Hormones are classified based on their chemical structures. Peptide hormones are chains of amino aci

Hormones are classified based on their chemical structures. Peptide hormones are chains of amino acids. Insulin and glucagon, which help control blood sugar, are peptide hormones, as are the hormones of the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. Steroid hormones are lipids (fatlike molecules) whose structures are derived from cholesterol. Hormones of the sex organs and the adrenal cortex (part of the adrenal gland) are steroids. Monoamine hormones are made by modifying amino acids. These hormones include adrenaline and noradrenaline made by the adrenal medulla, thyroid hormone (thyroxine), and melatonin from the pineal gland in the brain.

Hormones also differ in where their receptors are found in the target cell, and the type of effect they cause when they bind to their receptors. The receptor for thyroxine is located in the nucleus, while the receptors for steroid hormones are found in the cell's cytoplasm. In both cases, the hormone binds to the receptor to form a complex, and then the hormone-receptor complex activates specific genes within the nucleus, leading to synthesis of new proteins.

Adrenaline, noradrenaline, and the peptide hormones do not enter the target cell. Instead, they bind to a receptor on the membrane surface. The receptor extends through the membrane, and when the outside portion binds to the hormone, the inside portion of the receptor undergoes a conformation change. This change sets off a cascade of reactions inside the cell, ultimately leading to an increase in concentration of one or another internal messenger molecules. The most common of these so-called "second messengers" (the hormone is the "first messenger") are calcium ion and cyclic AMP (cAMP), a type of nucleotide. The second messenger then triggers other activities in the cell, depending on the cell type. In muscle, adrenaline causes cAMP buildup, which causes breakdown of glycogen to release glucose, which the muscle cell uses to support increased activity.

Hormones that bind to external receptors and work through second messengers affect pre-existing proteins within the cell. Because of this, they typically cause much faster effects than those that bind to internal receptors, which influence creation of new proteins. For example, adrenaline's effects last from minutes to hours at the most, while testosterone's effects last from days to months or more.

I’ve been up all night juggling these ideas and perspectives in my head. It is only recently

I've been up all night juggling these ideas and perspectives in my head. It is only recently that I've thought about this and for the most part my thoughts are vauge and incomplete. It all started when I watched a short documentary on Turkey, despite being secular, and the issue of hijab for women being mandatory or optional. I've been thinking about it a lot ever since I the Beijing Summer Olympics and the emergence of the hijab in atheletic wear for many muslim women. I didn't understand it much then, and to some extent, I don't understand it much now. But it was empowering to see that image. I suppose the next few designs I've been working on is simply a way for me to sort out my thoughts. Please don't hesitate letting me know what you think.

Hijab or ħijāb (حجاب, pronounced: [ħi.ˈdʒæːb]) is the Arabic term for "cover" (noun), based on the root حجب meaning "to veil, to cover (verb), to screen, to shelter".

In some Arabic-speaking countries and Western countries, the common meaning of hijab currently is of "modest dress for women," which most Islamic legal systems define as covering everything except the face and hands in public. Since the 1970s, hijab has emerged as a symbol of Islamic consciousness "and an affirmation of Islamic identity and morality" in opposition to "Western materialism, commercialism, and values."

Okay, so it's from Wikipedia, but it brings up some interesting points. Modesty, identity, morality in opposition of Western materialism, commercialism. Fair enough, then I saw this short fashion web pod about street styles and fashion trends in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

So I guess my first piece is about the contrast between middle eastern culture and western culture with the. It depicts a woman wearing a hijab. However, the hijab is patterned with the famous Burberry Check. While there are religious implications, I wanted to focus more on the ideas of materialism versus modesty.

The other thought I've been juggling with are muslim women who wear the niqab. The niqab is the veil that covers the face that is part of the hijab. I recently read a story about a muslim journalist who wanted to wear a niqab for day in London. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2006/oct/17/gender.religion Again, I think it's that dynamic between middle eastern and western cultures that intrigue me. I tend to believe western culture is more tolerant of differences (I should know better, but that is how I feel.) I can't really justify it. However, the journalist, Zaiba Malik, got nothing but babies crying, hate and fear. I started playing this scenario in my head. How would I react if I saw a woman in line voting for the presidential election (one of the most American, democratic, actions)?" Would I be gripped with fear or would there be a sense of empowerment believing that only this can happen in the United States? Would people scream "terrorist"?

It's a rough draft that I am still working on, but I'd appreciate your views and opinions on the subject and design? I'm trying to make her look less NINJA - so we'll see what kind of solution I can come to.

On another topic, I'm still stunned by Sarah Palin and not in a good way. However, in a surprising turn of events, she inspires and motivates me to WANT to vote just cause I sick of sitting and watching her wink at me. So I hope this inspires one other person out there to want to vote as well!

The report below comes from the Christian Telegraph and describes the discovery of a bowl that ‘scientists’ so called are speculating all manner of theories on. It seems the discovery of any object can be used to push an agenda of any type – in this case an agenda that will stop at nothing to nullify the claims of Christ.

The footage below was found on YouTube regarding the discovery of this bowl:

The report from the Christian Telegraph now follows:

Scientists find ancient bowl that may call Jesus a magician

In what is certainly to be a controversial speculation too hard for many Evangelical Christians to swallow, scientists claim they have found an ancient bowl that refers to Jesus Christ as a magician, reports Michael Ireland, chief correspondent, ASSIST News Service.

A team of scientists led by renowned French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio recently announced that they have found the bowl, dating to between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D., that is engraved with what they believe could be the world's first known reference to Christ.

In an online article by Jennifer Viegas of the Discovery Channel posted to the MSNBC website, scientists say the engraving reads, "DIA CHRSTOU O GOISTAIS," which has been interpreted to mean either, "by Christ the magician" or, "the magician by Christ."

The MSNBC article says that if the word "Christ" refers to the Biblical Jesus Christ, as is speculated, then the discovery may provide evidence that Christianity and paganism at times intertwined in the ancient world.

"It could very well be a reference to Jesus Christ, in that he was once the primary exponent of white magic," said archaeologist Goddio, who is co-founder of the Oxford Center of Maritime Archaeology.

In her article, Viegas says that Goddio and his colleagues found the object during an excavation of the underwater ruins of Alexandria's ancient great harbor. The Egyptian site also includes the now submerged island of Antirhodos, where Cleopatra's palace may have been located.

Viegas says that both Goddio and Egyptologist David Fabre, a member of the European Institute of Submarine Archaeology, think a "magus" could have practiced fortune telling rituals using the bowl. The Book of Matthew refers to "wisemen," or Magi, believed to have been prevalent in the ancient world.

According to Fabre, the bowl is also very similar to one depicted in two early Egyptian earthenware statuettes that are thought to show a soothsaying ritual.

"It has been known in Mesopotamia probably since the 3rd millennium B.C.," Fabre said. "The soothsayer interprets the forms taken by the oil poured into a cup of water in an interpretation guided by manuals."

Fabre added that the individual, or "medium," then goes into a hallucinatory trance when studying the oil in the cup.

"They therefore see the divinities, or supernatural beings appear that they call to answer their questions with regard to the future," he said.

Viegas writes that scientists theorize the magus might then have used the engraving on the bowl to legitimize his supernatural powers by invoking the name of Christ.

Goddio said, "It is very probable that in Alexandria they were aware of the existence of Jesus" and of his associated legendary miracles, such as transforming water into wine, multiplying loaves of bread, conducting miraculous health cures, and the story of the resurrection itself.

Viegas explains that while not discounting the Jesus Christ interpretation, other researchers have offered different possible interpretations for the engraving, which was made on the thin-walled ceramic bowl after it was fired, since slip was removed during the process.

Bert Smith, a professor of classical archaeology and art at Oxford University, suggests the engraving might be a dedication, or present, made by a certain "Chrestos" belonging to a possible religious association called Ogoistais.

Klaus Hallof, director of the Institute of Greek inscriptions at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy, added that if Smith's interpretation proves valid, the word "Ogoistais" could then be connected to known religious groups that worshipped early Greek and Egyptian gods and goddesses, such as Hermes, Athena and Isis.

Hallof additionally pointed out that historians working at around, or just after, the time of the bowl, such as Strabon and Pausanias, refer to the god "Osogo" or "Ogoa," so a variation of this might be what's on the bowl. It is even possible that the bowl refers to both Jesus Christ and Osogo.

Fabre concluded: "It should be remembered that in Alexandria, paganism, Judaism and Christianity never evolved in isolation. All of these forms of religion (evolved) magical practices that seduced both the humble members of the population and the most well-off classes."

"It was in Alexandria where new religious constructions were made to propose solutions to the problem of man, of God's world," he added. "Cults of Isis, mysteries of Mithra, and early Christianity bear witness to this."

The bowl is currently on public display in the exhibit "Egypt's Sunken Treasures" at the Matadero Cultural Center in Madrid, Spain, until November 15.

I've spent a significant amount of time in France. And I miss it. I miss it beaucoup. So I thought that maybe a weekly homage to all things français might be in order -- and might help me cope a bit better with my withdrawal. Stop the twitching and cold sweats and stuff like that.

And it might help you too, because let's face it: French things rule.

Case in point: boulangeries. Nothing is more withdrawal-worthy than a baguette. Screw the Louvre. Screw the Eiffel Tower. GIVE ME BAGUETTES OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!!

Vive les boulangeries!

After last year's post of Lebanese Graffiti in 2007, the streets of Beirut were filled even more with new lebanese arabic graffiti. Below are some of the nice graffiti tags in the "Karantina" & "Gemeyzé" regions in Beirut.

I do not have credits info for the street artists that did the tags, but it is always a pleasure for me to go around and spot the new tags and take photos of them.

Ma7rousa ya 3arousa entry in the Mulsaq Project.
Cargo trucks in Lebanon and the Middle East are usually painted with Arabic calligraphy using vernacular Arabic words. The Arabic word “mahrousa” is literarily painted on every cargo truck in Lebanon mostly on the back of the trunk or above the back wheels. Alongside this word, there is always an eye figure drawn next to it or a baby shoes hanging from beneath it. The word and figures are meant to bring good luck to the truck and prevent it from the envy and jealous eyes. The words “mahrousa ya ‘arousa” is typeset using “Alef Caps” type, which is one of my fonts originally designed for Alef Magazine, chosen for the “mcharabiya” arabesque star-shaped pixel pattern, emphasizing the Middle Eatsern flavor of the design. The baby shoe can be stuck hanging from the mirror or directly from the arabesque letters.

This is when type is most beautiful. When it is being created in pencil and appreciated for every curve and turn and treated more like a piece of art. I love hand-drawing type and when I saw this from Doyald Young today it reminded of the basics.

These sort of beginnings lead to such beautiful designs as these:

[caption id="attachment_49" align="aligncenter" width="500" caption="The skills of lettering legend Doyald Young."][/caption]

Although Home Run Script is my least favorite font at this point (*wink), everything else is absolutely beautiful. I love hand-drawing custom logos and lettering, creating a completely unique design.

I have this great "essay" that I wrote, but I don't feel like typing it all up right now.
I'm just so pissed off in general right now, I think.
I can't really tell.
I was crying earlier.
Because my dad was being mean.

And so ya.
That is my life right now.
Sorry too not post lately.

Too just EEEEKKKKKK to do it.

Letters are as much about the inner spaces as about the printing part. No new thought to anyone familiar with type, of course. It's about the tension between outer and inner contours, sometimes fragile, sometimes bold. Good type, when enlarged, gives me the same breathtaking shiver as good sculpture. Just as woodblock printing, type design has more affinity with sculpting than with drawing. Cutting mass away, bringing light in the black. Not adding form but revealing it.

In my sketchbook I sometimes play with the anatomy of lettering, not making actual letterforms. Abstract lettering? Maybe I will place one here now and then…
