Microsoft's Craig Mundie (pater familias of the Institute for Advanced Technology in Governments), is on a college tour across the nation.  The trip is something of a reprise of jaunts Bill Gates famously made over the years, when he would string together visits to campuses partly to evangelize, partly to recruit, and mostly to get new ideas from bright young (and contrarian) minds.  The Seattle paper today labels these tours as filling the role of Microsoft's "chief inspiration officer" ("Mundie gives campuses peek at tech's future").

What's he telling this generation of future technologists, at Princeton, NYU, University of Michigan, UC Berkeley and UC San Diego? Here's a telling quote from Craig in a much longer interview just posted with Knowledge@Wharton:

Many of the failings -- not just of our software but of all large software -- is that the security problems, the lack of reliability, the difficulty in maintenance, the difficulty in testing, all of these things are symptomatic of software still being too much of an art form and too little of an engineering discipline. I believe that over the next 10 to 20 years, you're going to see a dramatic shift in the way people write software...

Software will be built through the composition at every scale of a lot of distributed, asynchronous services. The question is: How can you specify, compose and operate those services?"

What will such software enable - since "a lot" = billions of distributed, asynchronous services?  The future may look a lot like what Kevin Kelly laid out in a mind-tripping TED talk at the dawn of 2008 ("Predicting the Next 5000 Days of the Web").  But Kevin's conclusions were predicted in a pathbreaking 1997 article for Microsoft Research by Gordon Bell and Jim Gray, "The Revolution Yet to Happen."  And their writing appropriately cited Vannevar Bush's archetypal 1945 Atlantic Monthly article "As We May Think" for its vision of the globally networked uber-library, Memex.

And for a peek into how we're beginning that "changed way of software," I've written before that we're using Robotics as an exemplar, a testbed, and it is proving to be a remarkable environment in which to test the power of marrying "Decentralized Software Services" (DSS) with a "Concurrency and Coordination Runtime" (CCR) framework.  It's really powerful, check out this detailed technical report - lots of cool pictures, too :-)

**Update** I've seen now that Tanjay is actually a product range, which as well as the CX700 also includes the LG-Nortel 8540. I'm sure there will be more to follow too..

I heard about the Tanjay a while back but it's taken me some time to track it down in it's new incarnation and for that I must thank Frankarr. This thing is seriously cool in my opinion..

First off, it includes a "fully embedded Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 Client" allowing access to all the features via it's built in touch screen!!

You can "Click to Call" from the user list via the touch screen.

You can set /change your presence status through the touch screen and the LED on the front shows your presence status too.

It includes a biometric fingerprint reader for recognition and to provide personalized preferences.

I'm not 100% sure if this is available in the UK yet..I'll check with Polycom at work on Monday. For now, here's a pic:

Fue el rector Gutiérrez-Solana quien abrió la rueda informativa para agradecer el esfuerzo de investigadores y profesores que han intervenido “sumándose así a otros equipos de la UC que han llevado a cabo investigación humanística y contribuido a que conozcamos mejor la historia de Cantabria”.

Durante estos últimos años, “el esfuerzo colectivo de profesores de la UC y de las Universidades de Zaragoza, León, Salamanca, Murcia -informó Gutiérrez-Solana- han dado como resultado la actualización del conocimiento que teníamos de los cántabros en la antigüedad, basándose no solo en fuentes clásicas, básicamente literarios, sino en lo que hoy puede obtenerse de disciplinas auxiliares de la historia como la arqueología, la epigrafía o la numismática.

Todo ello ha permitido ofrecer hoy una obra experimental, analítica y aplicada”. En su intervención quiso el rector de la UC matizar que la obra es una visión científica, que se corresponde más con la historia que con el mito “porque la investigación de la Universidad se hace desde el desapasionamiento, desde el rigor y la neutralidad que toda investigación requiere en cualquier área de conocimiento.

Como sugiere su título, “Los cántabros en la antigüedad. Del mito a la Historia” pretende hacer una actualización y revisión crítica lo más rigurosa posible de la historia de los cántabros, desde la llamada IIª Edad del Hierro hasta la época de transición entre la Antigüedad Tardía y la Alta Edad Media. Así lo explicaba el profesor Ramírez Sábada, en nombre de los coordinadores del libro y del resto de profesores e investigadores que lo han hecho posible, todo ello respondiendo “a la necesidad de actualizar y revisar críticamente bastantes cuestiones históricas referidas a la historia de la Antigua Cantabria que, o bien se encontraban sin actualizar desde hace décadas o bien se encuentran exacerbadas o sobrevaloradas en su importancia”.

La obra además responde a una necesaria actualización de este periodo que abarca el libro que hoy se presentaba: La Antigüedad tardía de Cantabria una época que, según Ramírez Sábada, “no debe verse como la época final, decadente, oscura, conflictiva del mundo romano, sino como una etapa histórica autónoma a partir de la cual se hizo la transición entre el Mundo Antiguo y el Medieval”. En ella cabe destacar aspectos que provienen del mundo romano anterior, aspectos que serán germen de otros que brotaron plenamente en el mundo Medieval y aspectos propios, peculiares, que no existieron antes en el mundo antiguo y no existirán después en el medieval. “todo ello contribuye al interés y la relevancia histórica y cultural que tiene el análisis y estudio de esta época”.

Destinado a investigadores y al público en general “que pueda disponer de una visión actualizada, con un tratamiento crítico de los tópicos que se viene repitiendo por convicción o comodidad", el profesor Ramírez Sábada fue enumerando los resultados o aportaciones que se derivan de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo y recogidas en la obra, destacando principalmente la inexistencia de un sustrato lingüístico vasco y sí la predominancia de una población indoeuropea. También describió como invento la “figura poética de Laro" y matizó la apropiación infundada del personaje de Corocota.

La obra ha supuesto, así mismo, un estudio de la arqueología de los pueblos cántabros no como un simple listado de Castros, de cronología imprecisa, sino dentro de las líneas investigadoras que para la misma época cronológica se están llevando a cabo en el resto de España.

La obra también marca la inutilidad de las fuentes literarias por si solas, para recomponer el escenario y los frentes de las guerras cántabras. También se marcan indicios de que los cántabros no ofrecieron un frente común, unido, compacto ante el invasor romano durante las guerras cántabras, sino que cada pueblo tuvo su estrategia y su interés frente a Roma.

Otras conclusiones muy interesantes apuntadas por los coordinadores de la obra en la presentación fueron la creación y potenciación de una red viaria, fundamental para una buena comunicación, el peculiar desarrollo de “ ciudades”, cuya característica era su escaso desarrollo urbanístico , solo destacando Julióbriga, de carácter estrictamente civil y desaparecida en el siglo III DC o el análisis sobre el verdadero extensión territorial del Ducado de Cantabria y, antes de él, la verdadera extensión de la presencia visigoda en el territorio de la antigua Cantabria.

La obra incluye también aspectos como el cristianismo y, como epílogo, los inicios de la ordenación del territorio y de la nueva sociedad emergente tras la invasión árabe y la destrucción de Amaya.

No se quiso finalizar la presentación sin el agradecimiento de autores y coordinadores al Servicio de Publicaciones de la UC que mostró, a iniciativa de sus antiguos directores, Andrés Hoyo y Gonzalo Capellán, y con la continuidad de la actual responsable, Belmar Gándara, su pleno apoyo para hacer realidad esta importante obra de investigación.

El catedrático de Historia Medieval de la Universidad de Cantabria, Jose Ángel García de Cortázar y Ruiz de Aguirre, fue investido ayer doctor honoris causa por la Universidad del País Vasco, en una ceremonia celebrada en Vitoria en el Aula Magna de la Facultad de Letras del Campus de Álava.

El acto coincidió con la inauguración del curso académico presidido por el lendakari Juan José Ibarreche. La investidura corrió a cargo del rector de la UPV Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias. El discurso de laudatio del doctorando corrió a cargo del profesor José Ramón Díaz de Durana, catedrático de Historia Medieval de la Universidad del País Vasco.

El profesor García de Cortázar (Bilbao 1939) es catedrático de Historia Medieval de la Universidad de Cantabria desde 1978, habiendo ejercido la docencia con anterioridad en las universidades de Valladolid, Salamanca y Santiago de Compostela. Con esta investidura se reconoce y premia su larga y brillante trayectoria como docente e investigador que ha marcado con su impronta la evolución de la historia medieval en España.

Desde la realización de su tesis doctoral en 1966 sobre 'Vizcaya en el siglo XV', sus trabajos de investigación se han centrado en el estudio de las sociedades rurales y la organización social del espacio especialmente en el norte peninsular incluida Cantabria.

Cortázar es autor de numerosos publicaciones y manuales de Historia Medieval con los que se han formado varias generaciones de estudiantes españoles y ha dirigido 25 tesis doctorales de discípulos que, en su mayoría, son ya catedráticos y profesores titulares de diversas universidades españolas. Por ello, su nombramiento como doctor honoris causa representa un alto honor y refleja el prestigio de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Cantabria donde ha ejercido la mayor parte de su docencia e investigación.

Presencia cántabra

Al solemne acto desarrollado en la capital alavesa asistió una nutrida representación de compañeros en la Universidad de Cantabria del profesor García de Cortázar, encabezados por los vicerrectores de Calidad e Investigación de la Universidad de Cantabria, Beatriz Arízaga y Jose Carlos Gómez Sal, respectivamente.

Asímismo estuvieron presentes el decano de Filosofía y Letras, Fidel Gómez Ochoa, otros catedráticos de Historia como Ramón Teja, Ignacio Fortea, Pablo Arias, José Manuel Iglesias, y profesores titulares del propio centro donde ejerce García de Cortázar. También asistieron otros docentes e investigadores desde Cantabria de las facultades de Medicina, Derecho o Ciencias, como el ex rector Ortiz Melón.

En su brillante intervención García de Cortázar recordó su infancia, sus vínculos con Bilbao, su formación universitaria y estableció la relación entre la sociedad medieval que tanto ha estudiado y la de su época.

Investigadores del Instituto Max Planck y de la empresa Sony demuestran en un trabajo de investigación publicado en la revista 'New Journal of Physics' que es posible desarrollar superficies capaces de doblarse y funcionar como dispositivos para emitir imágenes.
Según sus autores, los resultados de su trabajo hacen viable el diseño de ordenadores que pueden doblarse y guardarse en el bolsillo, televisiones con pantallas moldeables o incluso de periódicos con una tecnología que permite a los lectores actualizar las noticias diarias en un dispositivo fácil de llevar.
Los científicos explican que estos dispositivos, denominados dispositivos 'UC' están basados en materiales transparentes y flexibles a los que sus creadores se refieren como 'orgánicos'.
Sony anunció en 2006 el desarrollo de pantallas con dispositivos OLED (diodos emisores de luz orgánica) pero problemas técnicos como el tamaño y las limitaciones en resolución y la dificultad de estructurar los
componentes orgánicos de manera que no se deformaran cuando se doblaban, ha impedido la salida al mercado de estos diseños. Según sus desarrolladores, esta nueva tecnología de dispositivos no presenta estos problemas y ofrece más oportunidades para nuevas aplicaciones.
La investigación indica que mediante el uso de nuevas estructuras y combinaciones de los componentes orgánicos en una matriz polimérica viscosa no deberían existir limitaciones de tamaño o resolución para las nuevas pantallas.
Los científicos concluyen que han demostrado por primera vez la viabilidad de un dispositivo UC flexible completamente orgánico y transparente con colores versátiles y que tienen una luminosidad excelente.

UNA ILUSIÓN DESDE LA BANCA

Tímido, de pocas palabras y reservado. Un Sex symbol, para las más jóvenes. Un ídolo que sobrepasó las clases sociales. Que no cuenta con el esteriotipo de provenir de un barrio humilde, como Iván Zamorano, Arturo Vidal o Gary Medel. Es un futbolista de clase alta, criado en Lo Barnechea y que nunca jugó una pichanga en el barro de una población. Se ha ganado el cariño de la gente en base a buenas actuaciones en el ámbito deportivo. En el último Mundial Juvenil demostró que tiene las condiciones para ser el mejor. Aún así, mientras José María Buljubasich esté en Universidad Católica, es prácticamente imposible que pueda ser titular.

Domingo 25 de noviembre de 2007. Diez de la mañana. Christopher Toselli es interrumpido por el molesto sonido del teléfono de su casa, ubicada en la comuna de Lo Barnechea, mientras toma desayuno. Es Manuel Suárez, el entrenador de arqueros de Universidad Católica. Éste le dice tres palabras. Las que, el ex-arquero de la Sub-20, había estado esperando durante mucho tiempo: “Te toca jugar“.

"Me dijeron que al “Tati” (José María Buljubasich) le dolía la guata y que había posibilidades de que yo lo remplazara, pero que no era nada seguro. Yo estaba muy tranquilo. Fui y le conté a mi papá. Recién ahí me di cuenta que iba a debutar”.

Desde los 17 años que entrena con el primer equipo y nunca había tenido la posibilidad de jugar. Recién este año comenzó a ser nominado para los partidos, luego del éxito que logró en el Mundial Juvenil con la Selección Chilena. Hoy, a sus 19 años, tiene que soportar desde la banca, con impotencia, la irregular campaña de Universidad Católica.

Manuel Suárez, ha entrenado a Christopher Toselli desde que éste llegó al club a los 13 años y asegura que “cumple con todas las condiciones que un arquero debiese tener a su edad y quizás más en algunos casos. Mucha potencia de piernas, muy valiente y seguro de manos. El tema de su suplencia pasa por la experiencia de no haber jugado en primera división”. A esto agrega que: “Él tiene claro que está en un club súper grande que tiene un tremendo arquero adelante”, haciendo referencia a José María Buljubasich

Son las 21:30 horas, del mismo día. Acaba de terminar el partido. Universidad Católica le ganó 3-0 al descendido Coquimbo Unido. Toselli es felicitado por sus compañeros y por Fernando Carvallo, su entrenador. Está Feliz. Cumplió su sueño y mantuvo su arco sin goles, al igual como consiguió el record histórico de 492 minutos invicto en el Mundial Juvenil de Canadá. Está conforme, pero no del todo.

Sabe que pudo jugar sólo por la enfermedad de Buljubasich, el mejor arquero de los últimos tres años del Fútbol Chileno, el que fue capaz de estar en más de 1.352 minutos sin recibir un gol en su valla, récord que lo puso en el cuarto lugar a nivel mundial. De estar bien, no lo dejará jugar más durante el resto del año.

Ser el mejor

"Quiero ser el mejor arquero del mundo”. Es la frase que acompaña al nombre de Christopher Toselli en Msn -medio de mensajería instantánea en Internet-. Es su objetivo. Es su meta, y sabe que tiene la capacidad para lograrlo. “Tengo las condiciones y puedo jugar en cualquier equipo. Hay que trabajar mucho. No es fácil. Estoy entrenando y me saco la cresta todos los días para romperla cuando me toque jugar”, asegura.

Es el arquero con más proyección del Fútbol Chileno según declara su entrenador, Fernando Carvallo. “Hay un capital enorme en él y ojalá que lo pueda conservar, porque es un chico con grandes proyecciones. Si a eso le agregas que es una persona muy equilibrada para su edad, esto le da una ventaja por sobre el resto”, declara el Director Técnico.

Llegó al club a la categoría Sub-13 y “desde el principio demostró tener grandes condiciones”, según cuenta Manuel Suárez. Aún así, su primer acercamiento a Universidad Católica fue en una prueba…como delantero.

"Cuando era chico iba rotando de puesto, entre delantero y arquero. Pero luego de salir goleador del Campeonato Interescolar Copa Copec, con el Colegio Lo Castillo de Las Condes, se dio cuenta que era realmente bueno haciendo goles por eso se fue a probar a Universidad Católica en esa posición”, cuenta José Ignacio Fonseca, amigo de la infancia de Toselli.

Al final del entrenamiento, el entrenador de juveniles de aquella época los llamó a todos al círculo central de la cancha. Uno a uno iba diciendo quienes pasaban a la siguiente etapa de prueba. Toselli no estaba entre los nominados. Agachó la cabeza y se fue hacia los camarines. Sin decir ninguna palabra. Frustrado. Comenzaron las dudas. Pensaba en si todos los elogios que recibió en el colegio eran reales y no exageraciones, llegando a cuestionar, incluso, sus habilidades. Aún así, no se rindió.

Un año después volvió a Católica, esta vez a probarse como arquero. No tuvo problemas para ser seleccionado. Avanzaba sin inconvenientes las distintas etapas de examinación. Aquí nacen los primeros indicios de que el arco representaría su futuro en el fútbol.

Ya en las inferiores comenzó a tener un rápido ascenso. El buen nivel que mostraba en el club le sirvió de vitrina para llegar a la Selección Sub-17, siendo una de las figuras en los sudamericanos y posteriormente en la Copa Mundial Sub-20, junto a Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal y Hans Martínez.

Éste último, su mejor amigo en el fútbol, asegura que “Chris” como le gusta llamarlo, “tiene todas las condiciones para ser un jugador que llegue a rendir bien acá en Chile y afuera, en el fútbol internacional. Es un gran arquero que hay que pulirlo bien, para que se consagre. Su único impedimento para lograrlo, es que en Católica está el ‘Tati’”.

Precisamente José María Buljubasich, a pesar de que asegura tener una buena relación con Christopher Toselli, es el principal crítico del joven arquero. “Adelantarse a procesos no es bueno para nadie. Él sólo jugó un mundial sub-20, no es lo mismo que jugar a nivel adulto. Puede que sea bueno, pero todavía no ha demostrado nada”, aclara.

Además, sobre el deseo de sus fanáticos para que “Chris”, tenga una oportunidad para ser titular asegura que: “Yo en el club no escuché a nadie que diga eso. Los plazos se tienen que cumplir. Ahora estoy jugando yo ¿Por qué tiene que salir el que está jugando, si tiene mejor rendimiento?, es un deseo de gente que no está involucrada en el tema”.

Toselli se toma su titularidad con calma. Con humildad y sencillez. Sabe que recién está empezando. Alaba las condiciones y la experiencia internacional del “Tati”, y cree que puede aprender mucho de él. Aún así, asegura riendo que “cuando se me presente su oportunidad saco cagando al viejo y no juega más”, haciendo alusión a los 36 años que tiene José María Buljubasich, lo que para un futbolista significa estar a un paso del retiro.

Sus expectativas son claras y no se impone mayores límites. “Me gustaría jugar en España o en el mejor equipo de un fútbol competitivo. Me veo ahí en cinco a seis años. Si estoy en católica es para ser el mejor y obviamente en un tiempo quiero verme en el extranjero. En un equipo que me asegure la posibilidad de pelear títulos y de hacer cosas importantes”.

El más “BKN”

Viernes 16 de octubre de 2007. 23:30 horas. Es el momento de elegir al deportista más BKN, en los premios BKN awards que transmitió el canal Megavisión, para premiar lo mejor del año en distintas categorías. Entre los nominados está Christopher Toselli. Compite contra consagrados como Fernando González o Marcelo Salas, quienes pasan desapercibidos para los espectadores ante el arquero de la sub-20 chilena en el mundial juvenil. El público prácticamente enloquece, al escuchar su nombre, lo ovaciona. "Mijito Rico", es uno de los gritos favoritos de las mujeres presentes. Él, tímido, mira hacia abajo. No está acostumbrado al reconocimiento de la gente. No le gustan las decenas de Club de Fans que le han dedicado sus admiradores. Le avergüenzan. Quiere mantener el mismo bajo perfil que lo ha caracterizado desde que se hizo conocido públicamente.

Minutos más tarde, se dan a conocer los resultados. Los actores Fernando Larraín y Javiera Contador, quienes entregaban el premio, lo llaman al escenario. Ganó gracias a la votación telefónica. Sube al escenario mirando hacia abajo. No da un discurso. No dice nada polémico. Aplausos y silbidos adornan la escena. Él sólo agradece a la gente por el cariño que le demuestran. Tartamudeando. Quizás excesivamente. En ningún momento mira a la cámara. Vuelve a su ubicación en el público con el trofeo en la mano. Se recuesta en el asiento. Parece que se estuviera escondiendo.

Christopher Toselli se ha convertido en un verdadero Sex symbol, para las más jóvenes. Un ídolo que sobrepasó las clases sociales. Tanto así que desde julio, de este año, tiene un Fan Club, con sede en Valdivia, integrado por niñas y adolescentes de 11 a 17 años. Son cerca de 250 personas a nivel nacional, las que forman parte de sus fanáticas más acérrimas. Éstas al pedirle una autorización a Christopher, para crearlo, se encontraron con una persona tímida, a la que le daba vergüenza verse involucrado en eso.

"La primera vez que lo vimos estaba nervioso. Es súper tímido y serio, aunque se le puede sacar fácilmente una sonrisa. Al contrario de los otros futbolistas es súper humilde y amable. Se dio el tiempo de recibirnos, incluso esperarnos, cuando supo que nos habíamos atrasado. A pesar de eso, nos recibió de la mejor manera”, cuenta Carolina Mera (17), moderadora y organizadora del Fan Club de Christopher Toselli.

El arquero de Universidad Católica forma parte de la que pareciera ser una nueva moda entre los deportistas nacionales. Esta vez alejados de la farándula, dedicados exclusivamente al fútbol y haciendo noticia sólo por méritos deportivos, la que tiene como máximos exponentes a Matías Fernández y Alexis Sánchez. Este grupo además cuenta con el mismo prejuicio: Su timidez les pasará la cuenta a la hora de jugar en un fútbol más competitivo.

"Christopher es súper tímido. Pero esto no lo afecta en lo deportivo. Dentro de la cancha es muy distinto. Le gusta gritar y putear a sus compañeros para motivarlos. Tiene una personalidad increíble en el área y lo transmite al resto”, asegura Hans Martínez.

José Luis Villanueva, quién también llegó a ser asediado por la farándula a temprana edad, estuvo entrenando en Universidad Católica el semestre pasado, luego de un frustrado paso por el mediocre Fútbol Koreano. A él la sobreexposición terminó por cortarle una carrera que prometía mucho, a pesar de que tiene sólo 26 años. Se desvió del fútbol y reconoce que se le subieron los humos a la cabeza luego de ser nombrado como el “Beckham chileno”.

En el último tiempo, se ha acercado a Christopher y lo ha aconsejado. Aún así, reconoce que la mayor virtud del portero, es que está conciente de que es sólo un jugador más del equipo.

“Entrena igual que el resto y no veo en él actitudes de superioridad o de relajo. Hay que dejarlo tranquilo para que siga entrenando y madure para que pueda ser titular. La sobreexposición es desgastante para él, pero se ha mantenido ajeno a los programas de farándula que lo acosan. Esa es una virtud poco vista en nosotros, los futbolistas”,

Tutito”, como llaman a Christopher sus amigos, aclara que: “Pasé de no ser nadie a ser famoso. No tengo porqué cambiar sólo porque ahora soy conocido. Nunca me ha gustado la farándula y no me preocupa. La gente que me conoce, lo que más me destaca es eso, que no se me van los humos a la cabeza. No me meto en la farándula porque no me llama la atención. Lo mío es el fútbol y es lo único que me interesa

El entrenamiento terminó hace una hora. Periodistas profesionales y otros en práctica, admiradoras con posters con la foto de su ídolo y con cámaras fotográficas en la mano lo esperan. Christopher Toselli, no les presta mayor atención. No es por soberbia. No es de antipático. Sigue entrenando para ganarse una oportunidad. Tres compañeros prácticamente lo fusilan con la pelota de fútbol. Intentando, sin éxito, hacerle un gol.

“Profe, ¿vio la atajada de Toselli? ¿Qué espera para hacerlo jugar?” Le grita un fanático a Fernando Carvallo, mientras observaba la escena. Este último lo mira y le responde riendo: Si lo pongo a él, ¿qué hago con el Tati?

Christopher Toselli sabe que será difícil jugar en Universidad Católica. Qué es difícil que Fernando Carvallo le de la responsabilidad de ser titular. Es por eso que ha tenido que replantearse sus objetivos. “Mis expectativas dependen de si salimos campeones o no. Si es así, es una buena opción quedarse, ya que clasificaríamos a la Copa Libertadores y, con dos torneos, hay más opciones de jugar”.

Going to the hairdressers highlighted very clearly the improvement I have made in seven days.  Last Friday I walked around the town for 30 minutes, then sat in a cafe for 30 minutes and then had to go straight home to bed, I was absolutely exhausted.  I was also still on Diclofenac three times a day (having only come off dyhydrocodeine two days previous).  This Friday I was only on Ibuprofen as and when needed (normally morning and night) and I had the energy to walk around town for an hour and sit in the hairdressers for three hours.

Whilst in the hairdressers I had a few moments of revelation.  The first being the most exciting! I realised that for the first time in YEARS I was sat in the hairdressers with no anxiety as to whether I was going to have to dash off mid cut for the toilet, this was amazing.  For the last year or so I had had a home hairdresser for this reason (but it was not as nice as the whole salon experience).  I realised that I was just sat there very relaxed - bliss.  I did have a few moments of new experience...

After walking around town for a while I realised that I would in fact need to empty my bag before I went to have my hair done.  This wasn't an issue as we have a centre with toilets which are never used so I just headed there (they are also really, really nice toilets just a little off the beaten track).  I then had a bit of anxiety about having to empty my bag in the hairdressers, but whether by fate or subconscious purpose I happened to choose a hairdressers with a toilet in a next door building (shared by a few little shops) which is barely used.  I have air freshener but it doesn't matter what people say the smell from emptying the bag is rather more potent that the average poo! Still, I got on with it and my God it was a million times better than worrying about or actually having to dash off to spend 20 plus minutes on the loo with UC!

My next challenge is to dance with my bag.  I am a little nervous about this but I am going to go to a venue in my town, with my husband and take it very easy.  If it doesn't work out I shall know why, be able to come home and reassess the situation.  I hope to do this next week but N wants me to wait for another two weeks just to ensure I really am much better, so we shall see.  I managed to walk the mile to school and back this week so my fitness is much better.

Walking is still a little uncomfortable as I am still getting quite a lot of cramping in my back passage.  I am beginning to think this is due to some muscle damage as it seems to ease off if I walk and feel better throughout the day if I have a good walk in the morning.  The good thing is that it is definitely improving so I can see that it will, one day, disappear.  Another minor issue is that my posture has definitely been effected. This is not so bad as I aware of it and am working hard to improve it (dancing will help a lot too) but it is annoying to have lost my core strength.

All in all, I can see the light and as I embark on a more normal life I am starting to appreciate the enormous benefits of not having UC anymore.  My husband was delighted this morning when I got up with him and the children at 8am and proceeded to make us all breakfast - it is a good few years since I have managed that on a weekend as normally getting up and having to spend an hour on the loo was such a chore - now I practically bounce out of bed :-)

It would seem that hope is working out *clap clap*

Every year we go through the same game.  USC blows out a couple nonconference opponents and once again they turn invincible.  The rest of the conference is portrayed as dwarfs to USC's giant stature on the college football landscape.

However, as terrible as the conference is portrayed, it is the only consistent thorn in the side of a team that has beaten Oklahoma, Ohio State, Auburn, Arkansas, and lost only once in nonconference games, to Texas, in a nail-biter at the Rose Bowl.

Cal.  Oregon State.  UCLA.  Stanfurd.  Oregon.  Oregon State.

The Pac-10 has chalked up 6 wins against the Men of Troy while the rest of college football has amounted to a lone win by Vince Young.  Point being, while the Trojans have reigned supreme winning conference title after conference title, nothing is guaranteed.

As it stands, Cal, Oregon, Arizona, and Arizona State sit atop the standings and each of the control their respective destiney.  And, last I checked Cal's the only team that has yet to lose to a non-BCS team.  I'm not forcasting Cal breaking its Rose Bowl drought, but even at 2-1, Cal is as much of a threat as any other team in the Pac-10's top-half.
