So where do I begin?

By my post on June 13th, the second year of Uni and our exams had finished, and I was focusing on getting a thrid year work placement secured as soon as possible. After having two successful interviews and passing with "flying colours", I secured a ~60 week (June 08- ~End Sep09) placement at appius (http://www.appius.com). I have been working there since mid-june and have been very successful and working on a number of projects, while adhering to excellent standards. So far I have worked on projects for DLR (Docklands Light Railway), Sunseeker Charters, CTC Wings, Greenwich WHS and Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, to name a few :] I enjoy working there, and I'm hoping that I'll soon be able to help encourage the move over to the use of ASP.NET C# as opposed to Classic ASP (A case of code reuse there :) )

I moved to my new house in mid July and photos of the place are in the previous post. I have been living in the Winton area for about a month and a half, and am happy with the location. It's close to Uni (although I won't be visiting there as much this year) and very close to shops and every takeaway you can imagine. It's a half hour walk from town, which I often take twice a day, to and from work. If I don't fancy walking, I take the bus home which costs a modest 50p (student fair). I refuse to take the bus in the mornings as the price of a single is about £2.20 and the price of a return is £2.70. Considering it used to cost me £1.50, I wasn't impressed. Student fairs saw me paying even less at 50p single, 80p return. I can't get a student ticket before 9am, hence the price of the tickets is a lot more.

I am doing a good job of controlling my finances this year. I have taken out an ISA, as well as a credit card to aid my purchasing power and increase my savings. The credit card is mainly for online purchases where the protection may not be as high, or I am dealing with a site or company I have not dealt with before. The "CCA" (I think) agreement protects you against fraud, whereas a debit card does not. I am doing well with my ISA - saved over £150 and will be over £300 in a few days.

Ah yes, now. A couple of days ago, I was talking to a colleague and the subject of being a student, etc. came up. Student loans were a part of this conversation and this got me thinking. So later on I paid a visit to my SLC (student loans company) website, logged in and totted up. So far, I have accumulated over £17,300 in loans. Yup, over £17,300 in 3 years of education, with another £7000 or so for next year (~£3000 tuition, £4000 maintenance loan).

I am not going to be getting all worried about it, however. A) The money will be deducted from my wage packet in future, adhering to the minimum payments (whereby my wage is over the minimum threshold of £15000 (it most likely will be). B) The interest on the loan, increases by the rate of inflation each year. To counter-act this, I will be opening multiple ISAs and investing the maximum I can. The rate of an ISA is generally higher than the interest rate of my loan, so any money I would have used to pay off the loan would make me more interest, and in turn more money, by sitting in my bank. And finally C) The debt is written off after 25 years (as of 2006)

In other news, I have a new graphics card - The XFX GTX 280 1GB. More to come on that later (Including pictures).

Apparently some guy in 2nd year was telling people I hooked up with him at the last pub crawl. I know I was really drunk at that pub crawl, but I'm pretty sure I'd never spoken to him in my life. Ranga.

Study time before going to stuff my face with pasta.

Over the past few weeks I have started a second job and been working an extra 20 hours a week. For the moment the extra cash I am bringing in is a huge help and the extra work load is also a plus because it keeps my mind busy and keeps me on my toes.

I have also been thinking long and hard about the direction my future is headed. The job I am currently in is the caretaker of a TAFE in northern NSW. It’s a pretty strange system the government education system and unless you’re actually working in the industry it may not make sense.

I started the job in the beginning of February as a temporary. 7 months later I’m in the same position. With a private sector position logic would kick in and you would give the guy doing the job the full time position. Not in the public sector though. I have had to apply for my own job and I am waiting to go through a round of interviews to get the job that I am already doing and that every one is happy with me doing. Frustrating and confusing!

Any way I digress. I have been thinking of where I want to be in the future and what would make me happy. I have thought about the things that I enjoy and the things that stimulate me into enjoying life. Given the answers to the above it has taken some time to come up with a suitable future option that I would be happy doing. I have been looking through TAFE courses and Uni courses and trying to find something that would match my wants and needs.

I stumbled across a brilliant website and system that makes starting a uni degree so so so simple! It took 5 minutes on the phone to enrol in the course I wanted to do and that was it, my course is posted to me and the rest is available online.

The concept is designed around distance education made easy. You don’t need to sit entry exams, English competency exams or anything. It is left up to you to decide if you’re capable of studying a uni degree. If you’re at all interested in studying at uni, no matter which state you live in or almost any degree you wish to study you can set this up online. The website is below – Have a look!

I have signed up for a bachelor’s degree in Community Development. The course outline struck chords with me and I’ve been excited to get stuck into the study since I first saw the course structure. There are no set careers at the end of the degree but you are able to specialise in certain subjects later in the course to guide you into a career. It also gives you the freedom to take the degree and mould it into the career you want to make. This is very appealing at the moment and my mind is boggling with options and directions I want to take.

It will take around 5 years to complete the course if I study at a steady pace. A long anxious 5 years! I am more excited to get my brain back into gear and actually challenge myself and be able to put forward thinking into practice then to actually finish the degree.

The number of options I feel I have opened for myself through just enrolling in this degree has lifted a weight off my shoulders and I’m starting to feel better where life is heading. It is a strange feeling and one that I have not felt in a long long time also one that I do not wish to relinquish any time soon.

My mind is ticking over and thoughts are flowing, expect another batch of posts to show up in the next couple of weeks.

I'm currently battling against the accommodation office at soon-to-be my new university.  Their organisation is utterly useless. You'd think that at this time of year (between results and the start of uni) that they'd employ more people to deal with all the incoming calls and emails instead of sticking a crappy unhelpful answer phone message on the end of a telephone and ignoring countless emails. I know I'm not on my own in the frustration I feel towards these people! I have spoken to lots of people, all reporting they've heard different things and all left uncertain of where they're going to live in 3 weeks time!

I get the feeling that if I hadn't perservered and kept emailing them then I wouldn't have got any kind of response.

Today I got a response via email. A negative one line response, telling me that places were extremely limited and was I still interested in having a room. It's funny that, I could've sworn I'd emailed them at least 4 times in the last 2 weeks (after getting no response) and attempted to call them multiple times...BECAUSE I WANTED A ROOM.

I wouldn't really care if it wasn't for the fact that this wasn't my first choice, I still have bad feelings surrounding that that I'm trying to shake off and then the fist impression I get of the university is this crappy office full of imcompetant people.

I'm sure I could do a better job. I'm a total idiot for organising things and I absolutely love problem solving in a really stupid kind of way,

I'm going to get onto the student union when I get there and make sure the same thing doesn't happen next year. I also want to see if I can get involved with them and maybe do some student advice...or give-me-a-problem-and-I-will-solve-it sort of things.

I'm also going to look for a job once I move. In childcare again because let's face it, there are lots of kids running around and there's always going to be a demand for people to look after them while their parents are at work .

I'm also about to get this, I hope it's a good one.

Nach einem ellenlangen trockenen Begrüßungsteil in einer beeindruckenden Aula, einem schlecht gemachten Promo-Film über die BUAP und einem etwas besser gemachten Film über den Staat Puebla (Tú estado ideal!) wurden wir endlich ans Buffet im Innenhof geladen. Hier gab es dann Cemitas, eine Art Sandwiches mit interessanten und unbeschreiblichen Dingen darin und dazu mexikanischen Tanz. Eine Tanzgruppe führte diverse traditionelle Tänze vor und wir, die Ausländer, durften sich so poco a poco kennenlernen. Insgesamt sind in der BUAP momentan 150 ausländische Studierende, was eher wenig ist. Der Großteil kommt aus Lateinamerika, Spanien und Frankreich - aus Deutschland sind 17 Stundenten da und ein Prof von der FU Berlin. Ich habe zwei Deutsche kennengelernt und bin eher mit Luciana und Enora über das Fest gestreunt, dass bereits nach einer Stunde schon wieder vorbei war. Immerhin, man hatte uns mit ganz besonders chiquen BUAP-Beuteln ausgestattet mit Infomaterial und einem darin und einem Stadtplan darin.

Ansonsten läuft die Uni eher ruhig weiter. Der ein oder andere Kurs fällt aus, weil der Prof nicht da ist, und andere Kurse beginnen mit einstündiger Verpätung. Aber das ist eben Uni in Mexico. Man wird schon fast komisch angeschaut, wenn man pünktlich vor dem Seminarraum steht. Aber das werd ich mir sicherlich auch noch abgewöhnen.

Anonsten muss man ganz schön viel zu Hause machen. Die Kurse drehen sich immer um irgendwelche Lektüre, die zu Hause zu lesen ist, und die man in einem Papel dann zusammenfassen muss. Für die mexikanischen Studenten sollte das bei der Schwere der Texte eigentlich kein Thema darstellen, allerdings nehmen sie die Hasuaufgaben nicht ganz so ernst. Ich brauch dafür allerdings noch eine ganze Weile und es ist sicher nicht immer einfach, die Texte dann in eigenen Worten zusammenzufassen. Aber glücklicherweise bleibt ein kleiner Ausländerbonus, den einem die Profes einräumen. Und außerdem bin ich sicher, dass mit jedem Text das ganze auch ein wenig einfacher wird.

It has taken me two weeks (arggh!) to get my first draft out. Many many late nights and early mornings of reading, getting my head around it and then crafting it out in words. The next two days will require ALOT of editing, so help me God. I've most cleverly gone way beyond my word limit and that's not counting the mid summary and conclusion I've yet to write *cringe*! Nevertheless, I am just so thankful the draft is out considering my weak background of stats and epi. Thank you God! Thank you friends. 

But wait... it gets better! I have another assignment that needs to be completed by next month week and I've not even started!

Vertreter der WWU, der Niederlassung Münster des BLB NRW und der mit der Ausführung beauftragten Ibbenbürener Bauunternehmung markierten heute den Baubeginn mit einem offiziellen "Ersten Spatenstich". Das neue Gebäude wird viergeschossig, ohne Keller, errichtet und mit dem Mathe-Hochhaus im ersten Stock durch einen Verbindungsgang verbunden. Ähnliche Verbindungen bestehen bereits zwischen dem ersten Stock des Hauptgebäudes Mathematik und dem benachbarten Hörsaalgebäude und dem Zentrum für Informationsverarbeitung. Damit wird es künftig möglich sein, sich in allen vier Gebäudetrakten auf dem Eckgrundstück Einsteinstraße-Orleansring zu bewegen, ohne die Gebäude verlassen zu müssen.

Der Anbau mit einer Hauptnutzfläche von 1.300 Quadratmetern wird sich mit einervorgehängten Aluminiumfassade der Nachbarbebauung anpassen. In dem Gebäude werden unter anderem Flächen zur Verbesserung der Lehre im Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik bereit gestellt. Darüber hinaus ist nach Angaben der Universitätsverwaltung die Unterbringung weiterer Hochschuleinrichtungen vorgesehen, die unter akuter Raumnot leiden und "aus allen Nähten platzen", wie Prüfungsämter, EDV- und Verwaltungsabteilungen. Der Neubau wird schlüsselfertig für drei Millionen Euro errichtet und soll bereits in gut einem halben Jahr Mitte Februar 2009 der Universität Münster zur Nutzung übergeben werden.

Von uns gibts dafür ein "Daumen hoch". Hier weden Studiengebüren sinnvoll eingesetzt und kommen den Studenten zu gute.

Ich hab endlich meinen Einschreibebogen für Leicester fertig ausgefüllt (der zugegebnermaßen schon seit gut zwei Monaten bei mir rumlag) und samt der dazugehörigen beglaubigten Scheinauflistung abgeschickt. Dafür hab ich auch am Mittwoch einen unglaublichen Tatendrang entwickelt, weil ich genau wusste, dass Mr. D., unser Erasmus-Berater der Anglistik nur Mittwoch Abend Sprechstunde hat und es ab nächste Woche schwierig sein könnte, da hinzugehen. Nächsten Mittwoch hab ich nämlich bis 16.00 Uhr in Stuttgart Didaktik-Seminar und das wäre dann doch etwas knapp.

Jedenfalls hab ich mir am Mi Mittag als rasch einen Text für die dubiose Kategorie "Practical Experience" ("Please give information about any relevant practical experience to support your application" - keine Ahnung, auf was sich das beziehen soll) zusammengeschustert, der sich zum großen Teil auf Debating-Erfahrungen, mein Praxissemester (das ich im Moment ja noch nicht gemacht habe) und meine kurze und eigentlich nicht weiter sensationelle Tätigkeit beim ISP bezog. Auch an anderen Stellen hat sich das Einschreibeformular als etwas schwierig zu handhaben erwiesen. Für die im letzten Semester belegten Kurse gab es nämlich nur fünf freie Linien, ich hatte aber mindestens die doppelte Anzahl an Veranstaltungen und hab auch noch mühevoll alle Seinartitel auf Englisch übersetzt so gut das eben ging. Nicht mal die Kurse, die ich in Leicester machen will, gingen da anständig drauf...

Letztendlich hab ich folgendes gewählt (ich muss vier Kurse als erste und vier als zweite Priorität angeben):

1. Priorität:

English Language - English Pronunciation (Sprachwissenschaft, auch wenn es nach Ausspracheübungen klingt; mit Schwerpunkt auf britischen Dialekten)

English Literature - Evolution and Entropy: Changing Representations of Sciences in Victorian Literature (selbsterklärend? Jekyll & Hyde und Frankenstein lässt grüßen ^^ und wer weiß, was da sonst noch so wartet)

History - Ireland under the Union (Irische Geschichte 1800 bs heute oder so)

History - Madness, Monarchy & Politics in Georgian Britain (ich hab aber noch nicht rausgefunden, welcher der 5 Georges gemeint ist... irgendeiner zwischen 2 und 4 vermute ich *schäm* - ich versprechs zu recherchieren)

2. Priorität:

English Language - English Language & Literary Studies (das klang interessant, weil es einen großen Umfang an Werken abdeckt und gleichzeitig großen Wert auf sprachliche Ausdrucksfähigkeit zu legen scheint)

English Literature - The History of the English Language

English Literature - Before Homosexuality? Same-Sex Desire from Smollett to Dickens (^^ for the sake of it)

History - Political Satire 1681 - 1792 (damit ich nicht nur 19. Jhd. mache ^^)

So... die Frage ist jetzt nur, was ich davon auch tatsächlich bekomme... Schwierig ist das deshalb, weil ich nur einen Literaturkurs belegen kann, weil die sehr stark nachgefragt sind. Ich hab trotzdem drei angegeben, vielleicht bekomme ich ja wenigstens einen. Und wenn nicht, such ich mir eben was anderes. Es ist nicht so, dass es nicht noch genug andere interessante Kurse zur Auswahl gegeben hätte... ^^

Bei meinen sonstigen Fragen war Mr. D. sehr nett und hat mir auch ein ausgesprochen positives und nettes Gutachten geschrieben ("she seems well-organized and positively minded" ^^), besonders da er mich da grade seit 5 Minuten kannte. Aber das macht nichts, die Hilfskraft hat mir versichert, dass das sowieso mehr eine Formsache ist. Das mit der Anrechnung von im Ausland gemachten Kursen (eigentlich die Grundidee von Erasmus) funktioniert anscheinend auch noch nicht so optimal, beim Lehramt sowieso. Egal. Jetzt muss ich nur noch warten, bis ich eine Antwort bekomme... Und bis zur Grenze kann ich meinen per Einschreiben aufgegebenen Brief sogar im Internet verfolgen, hat mir die Dame auf der Post versichert... Eigentlich eine lustige Idee.

Na ja, jetzt ist der Eintrag dann auch lang genug und ich kann mich mal wieder meinen anstehenden Hausarbeiten widmen (jetzt wo ich beschlossen habe, die Potter-Arbeit doch noch in diesem Jahr zu schreiben - wenn Fr. F. mich noch lässt)

1. Themenfindung - wer Visionen hat, soll ins Archiv gehen

Dieser Ratschlag wäre bei mir wohl nicht sehr fruchtbar gewesen. Zum Thema Web 2.0 und Weblogs hätte ich Archiv wohl eher nichts gefunden. Ich empfehle daher KOMMUNIKATION. Reden. Mit Leuten. Lesen. In Zeitschriften oder Büchern. Inspiration kann durch viele Quellen kommen. Auch bietet es sich an, eine Arbeit anknüpfend an ein besuchtes Seminar zu schreiben. Da weiß man dann zumindest sicher, dass das Thema einen fesselt und spannend ist.

2. Teil: Literaturrecherche - Fachliteratur statt "Feuchtgebiete"

Der Autor der Artikels rät von Populärliteratur ab. Klar. Muss er ja. Aber für einen ersten Einstieg in das Thema eignen sich einfach geschriebene Artikel oder eher populärwissenschaftliche Artikel durchaus ganz gut. Vor allem ist das ja alles eine Frage der Definition. Was ist den schon populärwissenschaftlich? Nur weil etwas verständlich geschrieben ist, heißt das nicht, dass es unbrauchbar ist. Ich finde ja sowieso, dass es die eigentliche Leistung ist, einen Sachverhalt so darzustellen und zu kommunizieren, dass ihn eine möglichst große Zielgruppe verstehen kann.

3. Teil: Betreuer finden - Termin beim Abschlussarbeitsamt

Dazu kann ich sagen, dass wir bei unserem relativ überschaubaren Studiengang MuK eigentlich immer recht genau wissen, welcher Betreuer die Arbeit übernimmt. Die Gutachter wissen auch, was in ihr Gebiet passt und leiten den Kandidaten ggf. an den besser geeigneten Professor weiter. In Absprache mit dem Erstgutacheter findet sich dann meistens auch recht schnell ein zweiter, der die Arbeit begutachtet. Das mit dem Prüfungsamt ist hier in Augsburg (ausnahmsweise) auch recht unkompliziert, von daher halt ich mich in diesem Punkt zurück.

4. Teil: Anfangen - Konsultation beim Facharzt für Prokrastination

"Prokrastination" - dieses Wort scheint in Mode gekommen zu sein. Der Hang zum Aufschieben von Dingen. Ich persönlich kämpf ja eher mit dem Problem, dass ich Dinge sehr gerne erledigt habe. Eine E-Mail, die mich zwei Tage lang unbeantwortet anblinkt - nein, das ist nicht schön. Und so halt ich das auch mit meiner Masterarbeit. Einfach machen. Wird schon werden. Wer nie den ersten Schritt tut, kommt schließlich nie an.

5. Teil: Schreiben - und besser nicht in der Bibliothek wohnen

Ja, schreiben. Darum geht es hier doch schließlich, oder? Man sollte sich einen Arbeitsplatz suchen, den man über längere Zeit lieb gewinnen kann, der nahegelegene Möglichkeiten zur Ablenkung (Cafete vs. Skype/Telefon) und dem Stillen der menschlichen Bedürfnisse bietet (d.h. Mensa vs. eigener Kühlschrank). Es ist reine Typsache, ob man lieber in der Bib oder zuhause arbeitet. Ich bevorzuge letzteres. Aber das muss jeder selbst entscheiden.

6. Teil: Abgeben - jedem Ende wohnt ein Zauber inne

Da kann ich bisher nur von der BA-Arbeit sprechen. Ja, war ein tolles Gefühl! Und man sollte auf gar keinen Fall die Arbeit danach in die Hand nehmen. Mit 100%iger Sicherheit entdeckt man auf der ersten Seite, die man aufschlägt einen Fehler. Obwohl man genau die gleiche Seite mindestens eine Million Mal gelesen hat. So ist das. Aber eine Feier muss sein. Das hat man sich schließlich verdient. Und wenn man gewissenhaft gearbeitet hat, dann weiß man auch, dass es sooo schlimm ja nicht werden kann.

Wie Sandra bereits angesprochen hat, dürfen wir ja zwei Abschlussarbeiten schreiben. Allerdings kann man die BA als Pflicht und die MA als Kür sehen. Irgendwie fühlt man sich wohler beim Schreiben. Die Unsicherheiten, die man bei seiner ersten Abschlussarbeit hatte, sind spürbar geringer und man weiß, dass das, was man da monatelang macht am Ende auch einen Sinn hat.
