No sabemos si tendrá éxito, pero una nueva iniciativa a la hora de vender películas destaca por el formato en el que llegarán: ni en DVD ni en Blu-ray: en una llave USB, un sistema que podría servir para almacenar películas en alta capacidad y que ya tiene una primera protagonista: “Los cazafantasmas”.

El modelo de PNY consiste en una llave USB de 2 Gbytes en el que la célebre película estará incluida. La industria musical ya trató de utilizar este medio como una forma más de distribución de álbumes y canciones, pero la idea no cuajó, y ahora este fabricante se ha lanzado a la aventura con este nuevo proyecto.

De momento se desconocen las características técnicas de la compresión de audio y vídeo, pero lo que sí que existirá es un mecanismo DRM que impedirá que podamos reproducir la peli sin conectar la llave USB. Podremos copiarla al disco duro, sí, pero no será posible reproducirla si la llave, que actúa de “Token”, está conectada. Una idea singular, desde luego.

I'm on a "house-cleaning" mission this weekend, trying to cross-off some items on my too-long to-do list.

On boot I was getting the message:

> usb 1-1: device not accepting address 2, error -71

According to this post, I needed to re-order the way two modules loaded, and load ehci-hcd before uhci-hcd.

It appears the simple way to do this is to first blacklist both modules in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist:

blacklist ehci-hcd
blacklist uhci-hcd

And, next add them to be loaded in /etc/modules:

Both those files will probably have other stuff in them, of course. I like to comment these things pretty well because they are easy to forget.

This seems to work fine, but it is worth noting that some people offer up different solutions for this message, like adjusting APIC in the BIOS and so forth, so you might want to search further if this doesn't work for you.

Chargin' your blackberry...

If you find yourself without your charger for your blackberry and just run down your battery after a lengthy phone conversation with your partner or client, you could be SOL. Well if there is a PC connected to the internet and a USB cable available, your in luck!

Unfortunately, just plugging a BlackBerry into a PC's USB will not charge it. You need to get Window's to turn on the juice by installing the USB driver for BlackBerry.

Through Microsoft Update Catalogs (which most security firewalls allow ;-) ) you can install the Research in Motion driver update for BlackBerry Device. After installation, simply connect the BlackBerry with USB to the PC and it will happily start charging.

Step-by-Step...

Browse to Microsoft Update Catalog.
Search for: Research in Motion BlackBerry Device
Click on Add next to Research In Motion driver update for BlackBerry Device
Click view basket (upper right corner under the search button)
Click of the Download button.
Another window will open and you have to select a location to download the file to using the Browse button. Unfortunately, you can not just type in the Folder text space.

If all goes well you will recognize the "charging" indicator on your BlackBerry!

Universidade

Dia 01 aqui foi feriado (tudim fechado!). Então na terça-feira as aulas na universidade começaram---quero dizer, pra quem está pegando aulas... hehehehe Fui para o campus Macdonald láááá em Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue! Tem um shuttle bus entre o campus do centro e o de Ste-Anne (de graça para alunos que pegam aulas no Macdonald Campus) que leva cerca de 45min---ou 60min se o trânsito estiver muito ruim...

Lá encontrei com a minha supervisora, que é super gente-boa! Muito atenciosa! E participei da orientação para os alunos da School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, que foi muito útil. :-) Tinha uma brasileira que vai começar o mestrado, mas logo que acabou a orientação ela sumiu! Então... deixa pra lá.

Hoje já voltei lá de novo para mais uma orientação, dessa vez dos alunos de pós-graduação do campus Macdonald. Foi bem legal e ainda deram um USB flash drive (1GB) super invocado! Espia só:

A idéia é economizar papel! Ao invés de distribuir aquele montão de manuais e flyers, colocam no flash drive diversas informações importantes como sobre a universidade, o programa de pós-graduação, departamentos, manuais, integridade estudantil, Montréal, etc. Bem legal! E ainda podemos usar para documentos!

O verão aqui ainda está firme e forte! Hoje fez 29C!!! Com certeza que a sensação era de mais, porque aqui venta bem menos que em Saskatoon. Lá em Saskatoon a previsão já está em torno de 10C! Diferença bem grande né.

Nós achamos O MÁXIMO! Porque estávamos ODIANDO ficar lá (tb história longa!).

Tal vez parezca paranoia, pero guardo la costumbre de no utilizar "jump drives" ajenos en mi laptop, aún cuando el antivirus lo escanea al insertarlo; lo considero una práctica de "salubridad cibernética". Luego de leer el post de mi colega Jesús de OMGHacks, me reafirmo más en mi práctica, pues resulta que hay un programita llamado USB Switchblade que, una vez insertas el "jump drive" que lo contiene procede a copiar información, como contraseñas y cookies. Gracias a Jesús po esta valiosa información.

Todo quien me conoce bien, sabe que soy mega fan de los Cazafantasmas (Ghostbusters), la película ochentera de comedia con un giro paranormal. Hoy me entero de que Sony Pictures Home Entertainment ha licenciado a PNY (una compañía de memorias y otros accesorios de computación) la pelicula para ser distribuida precargada en una Memoria USB de 2 GB.

El lanzamiento es parte de la celebración de los 25 años que cumple la pelicula y podrá ser comprada en linea en Argos por £ 29.99. Por los momentos este producto estará disponible solamente en el Reino Unido.

Creo que es la primera vez que una película es distribuida en este medio, y me da un enorme gusto que haya sido una película tan querida ... ¿¡a quién vas a llamar!? :-D

Demi keamanan, Anda bisa mencegah komputer menyimpan data ke USB drive, caranya :
• Klik Start lalu pilih Run. Ketik “regedit” (tanpa tanda kutip) lalu klik OK.
• Cari alamat HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control.
• Pada panel kanan, klik kanan dan buat kunci baru (New Key) dengan nama “StorageDevicePolicies”.
• Pada panel kiri, pilih StorageDevicPolicies yang baru dibuat tadi. Buat DWORD value baru dan beri nama “WriteProtect”.
• Ubah nilai value menjadi “1”. Tutup Editor lalu restart komputer.

NewtMail: Newton MP130 connects to OS X

I did a search about Newton and I ended up on your great article. I have just bought an old Newton 130 (above) and I was wondering how you have it sync/connect with Mac OS X 10.5.4? I want mine to work with my MacBook and I think I need a USB serial adapter and the serial cable. None of that came with my Newton. Do you have any recommendations? How do you do it? Would be great to hear from you.

Hi Marcus,

Sad to say, I haven't actually connected my Newton with OS X - I can't because it's a MP110, and runs Newton OS 1.3. You need at least OS 2.x to connect.

I found my USB serial adapter (for hooking up with OS 9) on eBay, so that's the first place to try. A serial cable might be harder to come by, however. Luckily mine came with my Newton, but you could try some online sellers like J&K Sales or, again, eBay. I'm working on getting an updated Newton so I can actually try it out.

Thank you for answering! I went ahead and I got 2 serial cables and a Belking USB to serial adapter for Mac (for OS X). I found on Sourceforge that someone wrote a OS X version for this series of adapters, so I HOPE it might work. I don't intent do get a classic Mac just to sync my 130.

I also found out my backlighting wasn't working. I saw on eBay someone selling 2 screens for it, new, for $19.95. Already have taken my Newton apart multiple times, but it is scary!

I don't think I got it to work. I spent all afternoon looking for drivers and trying to hack the existing one. Problem is I did not even find the sourcecode of it on the Sourceforge project page, it's gone. The F5U003 refuses to run with the Sourceforge driver under 10.5. I think it only works up to 10.3.

I know someone did make it work with Intel and Mac os x 10.3.4 using the driver for the F5U103 (really identical inside), but the hack he did to the kext can not be found anywhere. And since I have Intel and Leopard that solution is out of the question. I just have the instructions, but they are useless without sourcecode.

So now I went ahead and got a Prolific chipset USB to serial adapter, I know they have Mac OS X drivers for Leopard actually that are current on their website. I should have it by end of the week and will give it a new try. Wish me luck! This just might work. If I get it working I will put up something on my own blog. By the way, this is my site and blog. In the meantime my 130 is sitting on my table waiting to talk to my new world MacBook, I still have hopes.

Hello Dave,

I have managed to connect my Newton 130 to my MacBook Core 2 Duo via USB! I have attached a few pics of my wiring setup. Works like a charm.

I will probably do a blog entry with nicer photos about this when I have some time. The USB to Serial 232 adapter has a Prolific chip inside, and that driver they are providing for Mac OS X works like a charm. There is a Sourceforge generic driver for all kinds of other adapter brands, but OS X wanted me to remove the generic one and the prolific driver does the job very well. The first software I tried and that works just like the old Apple OS 9 Connection Kit is NCX 1.2. I will try Escale and the others ones as well.

Just thought you liked to know how it is going.
