Enero 30th, 2007

Continuing the thread of blog posts related to disabling/un-annoyifying (yep, I made that up) Windows Vista and it's UAC, here's a way to really, really disable the UAC nag and get yourself real Administrator access like in Windows XP prior versions:

Open "gpedit.msc"
(I've already followed these steps on my computer, so notice that the Run dialog has the note "This task will be created with administrative privileges.")

Once in Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following tree item:
Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options

Open the item "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode" and choose the option "Elevate without prompting"

Click OK and close Group Policy Editor.

You should be able to run programs with Administrator privileges by default. Granted, this is less secure, but that's the way Windows has always been. ;-)

Along the same lines as the last post, here’s how to run a shortcut as Administrator either on

Along the same lines as the last post, here's how to run a shortcut as Administrator either on-demand, or by default.

1. On-Demand

This one is pretty straightforward - right-click on any shortcut and choose "Run as Administrator"

2. By Default

A little more complicated, but only just a bit...

Open the shortcut's properties dialog.

Choose the shortcut tab, then click "Advanced..."

Check "Run as administrator"

Hit OK on each of the dialogs to close them.

Now, this shortcut will always run in an Administrator role, similar to su or sudo on Unix/Linux.

There ye be. =)

Now that I’ve finally made the leap to install Windows Vista on my home computer, I thought it

Now that I've finally made the leap to install Windows Vista on my home computer, I thought it might be useful to dig through some old (and new) guides to keep Vista from annoying me as much as it did when I first tried it out in beta. Luckily, things are going much more smoothly this time. Here's a helpful tip from the How-To Geek about how to run a command as an Administrator from the Vista Run box.

FYI: The Run option is not enabled by default on the Start Menu. You'll either need to open it by using the Win + R key combination or by enabling it through the Taskbar Properties, using the steps below:

Right click on the taskbar, then choose properties.

Once in the "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog, click the "Start Menu" tab, then click "Customize..."

Scroll down to the "Run command" option, and check it.

Close the dialog.

Now, you'll have the "Run..." command back in your Start Menu, but it's worth noting that the newer Vista "Start Search" bar is a lot more versatile than the older "Run..." command. In either case, from "Start Search" or from "Run...", the following steps will help you to run a command as an administrator (from How-To Geek):

To try this out, go to the run box and type in something (cmd, for example)

Now instead of hitting the Enter key, use Ctrl+Shift + Enter. You will be prompted with the obnoxious User Account Control dialog… but it will then open up a command prompt in Administrator mode.

As luzes acendem, a poluição fica mascarada, a brisa geladinha chega e fica aquele silêncio... E a lua estava cheinha pra ajudar!

Visitar o Edifício Itália e ver a cidade lá do alto do terraço... Não tem preço! hahahaha

O Edifício Itália fica na Av. Ipiranga 344 e fica aberto ao público das 15 às 16 hs. ( Mas a gente foi ontem à noite e nem pagou nada... Só o estacionamento... Então vai saber...)

Didn't Apple learn anything from the previous Safari-installing debacle (besides that the market share of Safari increased from that tactic)? Apparently, anyone who has iTunes in Windows installed now also has a MobileMe panel in control panel. More malware from Apple. If MobileMe is as buggy in Windows as it was on Mac when it was first rolled out, I wouldn't want it there without my permission; I wouldn't want it there without my permission in any case

[caption id="attachment_325" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Microsoft says demand for Vista is strong: 180 million licenses sold"][/caption]
Redmond (WA) – There was a small number hiding in Microsoft’s FQ4 (CQ2) quarter release – a number we did not catch initially: The company said 180 million Windows Vista licenses have been sold so far and that demand for the operating system has been growing over the past year. However, if those numbers are right, and if previous sales numbers provided by Microsoft are right as well, then demand may actually be slowing.

Microsoft’s thriving business and balance sheet is the envy of every business man. Over the past 12 months, the company had sales of $60.42 billion and a profit of $17.68 billion. You just know that the company is ready to expand further: Microsoft’s war chest currently holds more than $23 billion.

Looking a bit closer at the most recent quarter, the company said that “revenue growth was primarily driven by increased Windows Server and SQL Server revenue, increased licensing of the 2007 Microsoft Office system and Windows Vista, and increased Xbox 360 platform sales.” The terrible dollar exchange rate also helped to drive up foreign sales: Foreign currency exchange rates accounted for a $542 million or four percentage point increase in revenue during the quarter.

Windows Vista sales were said to have been particularly strong. Vista OEM revenue increased $420 million or 13%, driven by 22% growth in OEM license units. Revenue from commercial and retail licensing of Windows operating systems increased $138 million or 22%, primarily from Enterprise Agreements and anti-piracy efforts in emerging markets. OEM premium mix was 72% for the three months ended June 30, 2008. According to Microsoft, total worldwide PC shipments from all sources grew approximately 12% to 14%, driven by demand in both emerging and mature markets.

For the full year, Microsoft said that Vista OEM revenue increased $1.7 billion or 13%, driven by 16% growth in OEM license units. Revenue from commercial and retail licensing of Windows operating systems increased $209 million. Client software revenue (which also includes Microsoft Office) was only 28% ($16.86 billion) of Microsoft’s total revenue, but it delivered the lion’s share of profits - $13.05 billion.

Microsoft said that 180 million Vista licenses have been sold since the operating system’s launch in late January 2007, which is a huge number by any measure. But given the criticism the software lately has received we were wondering whether demand for Vista in fact is increasing or whether it is stable or perhaps even decreasing.

Microsoft said that it sold 20 million copies of Vista in its first month, 40 million copies in its first 100 days and 60 million in six months. We have to be a bit careful with these numbers as they actually include Express Upgrade sales – a program that was available since October 26, 2006 and allowed Microsoft to take advantage of the Christmas season and sell Vista while it actually had no product available.

This current number of 180 million units is not directly comparable as it includes all Vista sales, including licenses via various volume-licensing deals. There was only one number we could find that more directly compares to this new information: In late October of 2007, or just after the 1-year sales anniversary of Vista, Microsoft said that it had sold 88 million copies plus an additional 40+ million licenses, which adds up to about 128 million units total. Divided by 12, this gave Vista a sales pace of about 10.6 million units per month. Nine months later, Microsoft apparently has sold an additional 52 million units total, indicating a pace of just 5.8 million copies and licenses per month since October 2007.

This number, which includes retail copies and volume licensing is actually below the performance of sold retail copies in the first few months after Vista launch: By July 31, or slightly more than nine months after sales begin, Microsoft had sold 60 million retail copies – about 6.7 million units per months.

Clearly, only Microsoft knows the details about its real performance, some numbers reported are more than wishy-washy and let’s not forget that Microsoft deferred Express Upgrade revenue, which blurs sales and unit shipments estimates even further. But if the reported Vista sales numbers are close, we are actually a bit surprised that the figures are not higher, especially since Microsoft said that PC sales in fact are increasing, which should show unit growth on a per-month basis.

So, we are taking these numbers with a grain of salt, but we still can’t help but feel that the Vista picture isn’t quite as rosy as Microsoft is painting it. However, it still brings in the cash, no doubt about it.

Microsoft has recently announced that it has sold over 180 million copies of Windows Vista. Let's be honest: for a OS that is supposedly full of fail, that is pretty good. In fact Vista's market share has risen by 355% in the past year. Now compare that with Apple's 32% increase. I think it's time people stopped bashing Vista as a failure and accept that it's just as good as any OS out there.

Are you tierd of windows? Do you want to try something new? Something with no “blue screen of

Are you tierd of windows? Do you want to try something new? Something with no "blue screen of death" and no crashes, a cool system that just works! Try UBUNTU!

What is Ubuntu?

Ubuntu is a linux distribution that is currently rated as the best distro on Distrowatch.

Why Ubuntu/Linux?

Apart from the fact that ubuntu is the best linux distro it is very stable and easy to use. Linux has been improving a lot in the past years and now it is at a point where it could be used as desktop system. Long back linux was only used as servers and still is because of its stability and security. It is very secure and stable. A lot of you have experienced whats called the "blue screen of death" when your computer just goes blue and restarts. You can find out more about it here. If you haven't already you might sometime in the future. It doesn't mean you will but you might. It occurs when a hardware or software error occurs and to prevent further damage it gives you a blue screen and restarts your computer. This is very annoying and happens a lot on Microsoft Windows OS such as Vista. Why not use something that is easier to use, more stable, and more secure. What more can you ask for in an operating system.

A lot of people complain that it is not as easy to use as it is said. Look again when these were posted. Years ago! Now, linux systems are very useable and give a very good performace. One of the biggest issues people run into is installing programs. It has now become easier than ever and so easy you that you can't complain. If you want to find out more on how to easily install applications on linux click here. Applications are also called packages in linux systems.

The reason I suggested ubuntu is because it is designed for new comers to easily get used to. But don't get fooled by the ease. It is just as powerful as the any other distribution such as Novel SUSE or Redhat.

How Do I Get Started With Ubuntu?

First you need to go download a copy of the OS which is completely free because it is an open source distro and you can customize it as much as you want. To download a copy click on the following link. Download Now!
Ubuntu gives you the option of downloading a Live CD or a text based install. Using the live cd you can just pop it in your drive and try it out without even installing. To install just click on the install icon on the desktop. A text based install is where you don't get to try out the OS but it is used to only install the OS. Just follow the simple steps and you will have a running Ubuntu Desktop in no time!

Why is it not very visually appealing?

Ubuntu is based on a human theme and so brown is its theme. You will be seeing different themes on the next version. The current version is 8.04 codenamed Hardy Heron. This is where you options get very wide. Ubuntu is so customizable you can make it look exactly like you want. Finally you get to feel a desktop of your own! You can download more themes at art.gnome.org or www.gnome-look.org. I forgot to mention there are two desktop enviornments. KDE and Gnome. You can also have both but only use one at a time. Click here to learn more about desktop environment. There are a lot more desktop managers but gnome and kde are the most widely used ones.

Once you are done installing and setting it up with your favorite themes you can install more applications. Your desktop is then finally ready for everyday use. Believe me you are going to have an amazing experience with it. If you want to add more eye candy with desktop effects you can enable compiz which comes installed by default on ubuntu. You think Mac OSX looks cool, try compiz. There are plugins you can install to get more effects.

Enjoy your Ubuntu installs!

Cheers,

Aslam

Personally I use Gadwin PrintScreen to make my screen captures. They offer a freeware version that works great. It doesn't do certain things the Snipping Tool does but it does many other things better. They also offer a professional version, that does more of the things the Snipping Tool does and then some. I just don't really need all that.
