Google Chrome is a browser that combines a minimal design with sophisticated technology to make the web faster, safer, and easier.

The browser uses WebKit as the rendering engine and has Gears integrated into it.

A word of advice, it looks much better on Windows Vista and when it is maximised. You might also want to enable the Home button and keep the bookmarks toolbar visible at all times.

Like this:

One thing I absolutely hate is when you install the product, it adds a startup entry of GoogleUpdate.exe. So each time your computer starts it runs the exe and it never shuts down. It also does not install in the Programs Folder like normal software programs, but instead at C:\Users\\AppData\Local on Windows Vista.

I know that this is beta software, so this may change when the final product is out, but Google don't add files or services to our startup list, no matter how small. You don't see Mozilla Firefox doing that.

Overall, it is a very good web browser, but too simple for my liking. It's hard to keep lots of bookmarks and it doesn't support RSS yet, but it is very fast. It is also supposed to be more efficient then other web browsers in the way it handles processes and threads. I would not recommend it for daily use just yet. A lot of sites that use advanced JavaScript functions have problems e.g. the new Facebook, so many features to do work, like joining a new group or deleting a comment.

Read the Comic Book to get a better insight into the ideas and features behind Google Chrome.

Something that came up recently at work was the need to programmatically convert a web page (rendere

Something that came up recently at work was the need to programmatically convert a web page (rendered, not raw HTML) to PDF. Since I was less than impressed with the documentation I found on the web explaining how to do this in a Windows enviroment, I thought I'd post how I did it to make it easier for the next person.

Let's start with the overall architecture. The first thing I did was install PDFCreator on a server on our network. PDFCreator is a free "virtual printer" that allows you to print documents to it and writes them out as PDF documents. While I use CutePDF on my own computer for this purpose, PDFCreator has the advantage of having a "batch print" capability, meaning it's possible to print to it without a print dialog, and the files are automatically saved to a specific location. To do this, I installed PDFCreator as a service (instructions here). I then created a console application (using VS.NET 2005) that grabs the web page I'm interested in, renders it, and sends it to the PDF printer. I set this application up as a Scheduled Task in windows so it can run weekly.

Now let's take a look at the code. (All code snippets include the relevant "using" statements.) Here's my Main method (leaving out the exception handling for brevity's sake):
using System.Windows.Forms;

[STAThread]
static void Main(string[] args)
{
    Application.Run(new CustomApplicationContext());
}
Now, I know that two aspects of that code seem unusual for a console application. The first is the [STAThread] attribute, which I'll explain later, and the second is the call to Application.Run(). That call is there because I need the console application to handle events and to continue executing until I explicitly tell it to quit, which means it needs a message loop (or message "pump"). In this regard, it acts more like a GUI application but without the overhead of creating forms I don't need.

NOTE: Although I used a console application, the same code will work in a Windows (GUI) application by changing the call to Application.Run() to run a form rather than an ApplicationContext.

Next, here's the majority of my CustomApplicationContext class definition:
using System;
using System.Windows.Forms;

class CustomApplicationContext : ApplicationContext
{
    WebBrowser _browser = new WebBrowser();
    Int16 PRINT_ARGS = (
        Constants.PRINT_DONTBOTHERUSER |
        Constants.PRINT_WAITFORCOMPLETION );

    public CustomApplicationContext()
    {
        _browser.DocumentCompleted += _browser_DocumentCompleted;
        _browser.Navigate(Constants.TARGET_URL);
    }

    void _browser_DocumentCompleted(object sender,
        WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e)
    {
        if (_browser.ReadyState == WebBrowserReadyState.Complete)
        {
            try
            {
                string defaultPrinter = WrappedNativeMethods.GetDefaultPrinter();

                if (NativeMethods.SetDefaultPrinter(Constants.PDF_PRINTER_NAME))
                {
                    object pvaIn = PRINT_ARGS;
                    object pvaOut = Type.Missing;
                    ((SHDocVw.IWebBrowser2)_browser.ActiveXInstance).ExecWB(
                        SHDocVw.OLECMDID.OLECMDID_PRINT,
                        SHDocVw.OLECMDEXECOPT.OLECMDEXECOPT_DONTPROMPTUSER,
                        ref pvaIn, ref pvaOut);
                        NativeMethods.SetDefaultPrinter(defaultPrinter);
                }
            }
            finally
            {
                Application.ExitThread();
            }
        }
    }
}
Here's the relevant code in my Constants class:
using System;

class Constants
{
    public const string PDF_PRINTER_NAME = "PDFCreator";
    public const Int16 PRINT_WAITFORCOMPLETION = 0x02;
    public const Int16 PRINT_DONTBOTHERUSER = 0x01;
    public const string TARGET_URL = @"http://url_of_web_page_to_print";
}
Lastly, here's the relevant code in my NativeMethods class:
using System;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
using System.Text;

class NativeMethods
{
    [DllImport("winspool.drv", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)]
    public static extern bool GetDefaultPrinter(StringBuilder pszBuffer, ref int pcchBuffer);

    [DllImport("winspool.drv", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)]
    public static extern bool SetDefaultPrinter(string name);
}
The above Win32 function declarations were obtained from pinvoke.net.

If you're wondering why I didn't post the code for the WrappedNativeMethods class, it's because there's only one method in it: a method that wraps the above GetDefaultPrinter method. To get that code, click here and copy the "Sample Code" on the page.

Now I'll explain the [STAThread] attribute above the Main method. The attribute is there because in order to instantiate an instance of the WebBrowser control, the current thread must be running in a "single-threaded apartment" state. Click here for a short explanation of what that means.

Now to explain a few quirks of printing with the WebBrowser control (i.e. Internet Explorer) and how I worked around them. First, the WebBrowser control has a single Print() method that takes no arguments. As a result, you can't easily do the following: (a) send the output to any printer other than the system's default printer, (b) suppress Internet Explorer's "print" dialog (it's displayed as though a user clicked "File => Print"), and (c) execute the print call synchronously (i.e. cause it to block until completion rather than firing off a thread and then returning).

To solve the default printer issue, I had to make Win32 API calls to get the current default printer, make my PDF printer the default right before printing, and reset the default printer right after printing.

Next, to work around the print dialog issue, I bypass the web browser's Print() method and call ExecWB directly (which Print() calls under the hood) with my own arguments. Note that to call ExecWB, the web browser must be cast to a COM interface of type IWebBrowser2. To include that interface (and a few constants) in my code, I added a reference to the "SHDocVw.dll" file (found in the "C:\WINDOWS\system32" folder). The OLECMDEXEOPT_DONTPROMPTUSER value passed to ExecWB tells the browser to suppress the print dialog. Likewise, the pvaIn parameter contains a reference to PRINT_ARGS, which includes a "don't bother the user" flag.

By the way, both flags in PRINT_ARGS are documented here on MSDN. Likewise, the IDM_PRINT command (which is what calling ExecWB with the OLECMDID_PRINT argument maps to) is documented here. If you read the docs you'll see that the IDM_PRINT command takes a VARIANT of type VT_I2 for the pvaIn argument. In .NET, that maps to an object holding a reference to an Int16 structure (see this page on MSDN).

Lastly, you'll see that PRINT_ARGS includes a "wait for completion" flag. This is what tells the ExecWB call to block until printing is completed. Why is this important? Because we don't want to reset the default printer and exit the application until we've actually printed something. In fact, exiting too soon can cause the print job never to happen.

I hope this post was helpful. Even if you're not printing to PDF, I hope knowing a little more about how the WebBrowser controls prints in general will help make it easier to use.

People seem to find alot to hate in the default Firefox 3 theme. First off is the default “Key

People seem to find alot to hate in the default Firefox 3 theme. First off is the default "Keyhole" navigation buttons, something everyone seems to hate. The first question everyone asks is "Why, on this good earth, do you, Satan, think that the back button should be in any way highlighted?" Well maybe its because it gets used much more than the forward button. Seriously, how often do you find yourself going forward? as often as not you hit back, and if you need to go forward you just reclick the link that got you there in the first place.

However, utility aside, its inconsistent with the style used in practically every other application and operating system out there, and inconsistency is ugly. Its an easy fix, you just right click on the menu bar, select "Customize..." from the drop down menu, and check "Use Small Icons" there at the bottom. I don't know why these buttons are not the default, or more importantly why you can only get them with Small Icons, a possible problem with people of taste and poor sight. Oddly, no matter what the icon size, all other windows use the Small Icon navigation buttons.

Another Point of Contention is that of OS integration, namely its broken in XP, Vista, and OSX, while being simply unsightly in Linux. The clearly "Firefox" navigation buttons sort of break the otherwise OS integrated appearance of the Browser, and in Linux, where the Icons are lifted directly from the underling GUI theme, its just uninteresting and crude. Granted the latter is less the fault of the Firefox Crew, and more the fault of the window Manager its running on, but they still should have seriously considered it. So now you have a Firefox that is somewhat unattractive across three platforms, and unrecognizable on one.

A personal Gripe of mine is that you open the "Library" by clicking on "Organize Bookmarks..." in the Bookmarks menu. Why not just call it Bookmarks? Why not have the option be to "Organize Bookmarks Library..." or simply "Organize Library..."? Why does something so minor seem to bother me so much...

Now for the good news, its just a theme people, you can change it out. The new Firefox is faster and lighter than the last, includes a bundle of Anti-fishing and security features, still supports all kinds of third party add-ons, and is completely free. Personally I'm just suffering the default until either HaikuFox is updated (the developer says that's coming soon) or I find another that catches my fancy. At the end of the day a bad default theme, on a theme-able application, is like a bad haircut. Sure its a bit unsightly at first, but you can always grow it back out. Grow little fox, Grow....

Microsoft nennt in seinem Hinweis keine technischen Details.

Only a couple of years ago, Firefox was the little browser that could — an open-source program created by thousands of contributors around the world without the benefit of a giant company like Microsoft to finance it.

Skip to next paragraph

Mitchell Baker is the Mozilla Corporation’s chief executive.

Since then, Firefox, which has prospered under the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation, has grown to be the largest rival to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, with 15 to 20 percent of the browser market worldwide and higher percentages in Europe and among technology devotees. It is the most popular alternative browser since Netscape, with about three times as many users as Apple’s Safari.

Part of Firefox’s appeal was its origins as a nonprofit venture, a people-powered revolution involving the most basic Internet technology, the Web browser. Also, because the core code was open, Firefox could tap into developers’ creativity; they are encouraged to soup up the browser, whether by blocking ads from commercial Web sites, a popular add-on, or by creating “skins” to customize the browser’s appearance.

But in trying to build on this success, the Mozilla Foundation has come to resemble an investor-backed Silicon Valley start-up more than a scrappy collaborative underdog. Siobhan O’Mahony, an assistant professor at the School of Management of the University of California, Davis, calls Mozilla “the first corporate open-source project.”

The foundation has used a for-profit subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation, to collect tens of millions of dollars in royalties from search engine companies that want prominent placement on the browser. And by collecting that money as a war chest to compete against giants like Microsoft and Apple, the foundation has, at least temporarily, moved away from the typical activities of a nonprofit organization.

“The Mozilla community has been a bit hybrid in terms of integrating public and private investment all along — its history is fairly unique in this respect,” Professor O’Mahony said.

So far, the many contributors to Firefox seem pleased with its financial success. The bigger question is what Mozilla will do with all its money.

According to Mozilla’s 2006 financial records, which were recently released, the foundation had $74 million in assets, the bulk invested in mutual funds and the like, and last year it collected $66 million in revenue. Eighty-five percent of that revenue came from a single source — Google, which has a royalty contract with Firefox.

Despite that ample revenue, the Mozilla Foundation gave away less than $100,000 in grants (according to the audited statement), or $285,000 (according to Mozilla itself), in 2006. In the same year, it paid the corporation’s chief executive, Mitchell Baker, more than $500,000 in salary and benefits. (She is also chairwoman of the foundation.)

Ms. Baker, a lawyer who has worked for Silicon Valley companies since the mid-1990s, said her compensation “is yet another example of Mozilla as a hybrid,” adding that it made her “a poor stepchild, not even,” compared to the leaders of other equally influential Silicon Valley companies.

Ms. Baker says it was the community, not Google’s money, that made Firefox a player in the field. “Mozilla is successful because we have this giant set of people who care about it,” she said. “The fundamental infrastructure piece that keeps Mozilla independent from even a single source of income like Google is the diverse set of people.”

She added: “No amount of money would have allowed us to be as successful as we are.” Then, referring to Microsoft, she said, “We cannot outspend them.”

The rise of Firefox can be seen as an extension of the Netscape-Microsoft battle of the mid-1990s. After Microsoft largely wrested control of the market, Netscape decided in 1998 to release its code to the public, and immediately developers took up the challenge.

By 2003, AOL, which had acquired Netscape, released the browser code to the newly created Mozilla Foundation, and by November 2004, the first version of Firefox was released. At the time, it was promoted as pursuing the goals of being user-friendly, able to work on different operating systems and more secure. The corporation was created in 2005.

The browser’s other, unstated advantage, shared with other open-source projects, was A.B.M.: Anybody but Microsoft.

“Firefox is able to tap many different audiences. Not everyone cares about keeping Web standards open, but a significant part of the contributing population fears that if Firefox loses share, then Web standards could become the purview of Microsoft alone,” Professor O’Mahony wrote in an e-mail message.

Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft’s general manager for Internet Explorer, noted that the market still showed a marked preference for Explorer, but he did concede that Microsoft, for structural reasons, could not show the enthusiasm Firefox developers have.

“We are much more reserved about thinking out loud as we make the browser better,” he said. “I can go through and talk about all the innovations we have made, but we don’t talk about them until they are done. People make very important decisions based on what Microsoft says; we have a responsibility about what we say out loud.”

Looming over Mozilla’s future, however, is its close connection with Google, which has been writing most of the checks that finance the Firefox project through its royalty contract.

When the connection with Google was revealed more than a year ago, the question on popular tech Web sites like Slashdot.org was whether Mozilla was acting as a proxy in Google’s larger war with Microsoft and others.

The foundation went so far as to directly address the issue, writing recently, “We do not vet our initiatives with Google,” and adding that it made sure that Google “understood the separation between a search relationship and the rest of our activities.”

Yet lately, the concern among Firefox users and developers about the Mozilla-Google relationship focuses more on what would happen if Google were to walk away, create its own browser or back another, like Safari. This discussion of life after Google represents an unexpected twist: the fear is that instead of being a proxy for Google, Mozilla may have become dangerously reliant on it.

Wladimir Palant, a longtime contributor to Firefox and developer of the popular Adblock Plus add-on that removes ads from Web pages, said he was pleased that the foundation had so much money saved up. And while he rattled off a number of priorities that he was glad the foundation had been pursuing, including improving the infrastructure and hiring more staff, he said No. 1 was, “Save some of the money for later.”

He said, “This will keep them independent of market tendencies and companies like Google.” If Google were to make an unreasonable demand, he said, “Mozilla will still have enough time to look for alternative money sources.”

Ms. Baker said that while she tried “to stay away from” that kind of speculation, “I take the view that we are doing something fundamentally important, and as that becomes clear, there could be other entrants.” She added: “Google is on everyone’s mind, but it could come from China, who knows?”

A Google spokeswoman would not comment on any of the issues raised by the Google-Mozilla relationship, but issued a statement: “Mozilla is a valued business partner because many users utilize Firefox to access Google products and services. We will continue to work with a variety of technology providers, including Mozilla, to ensure our mutual users have the best experience possible with our products and services.”

To an outside observer like Tim Wu, a law professor at Columbia who focuses on the Internet, the alliance still makes a lot of sense.

“We’re living in a cold war between open and closed systems, and Google is happy to lend support to entities that it sees as allies,” he said.

While acknowledging that he does not know the secret terms of their contract, he said, by way of analogy, “No one is surprised that Turkey would get aid from the U.S. during the cold war.”
