Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story....in six words. He boasted that he could do it without a problem. His story?

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

I must admit, this is a powerful story. The images and emotions that it evokes are enormous. Wired Magazine challenged several of our contemporary authors to try to do the same. Here are a few examples:

Machine. Unexpectedly, I’d invented a time
- Alan Moore

Easy. Just touch the match to
- Ursula K. Le Guin

Epitaph: He shouldn't have fed it.
- Brian Herbert

For the complete list, you can go to this link at the Wired website. Here's my go at it :

"It's Monday again. Weekends barely exist." Heidi L.

Can you write your own six-word story?

Thanks to the October 2008 edition of WIRED magazine, I’ve discovered another website that is boun

Thanks to the October 2008 edition of WIRED magazine, I’ve discovered another website that is bound to get us all into trouble at home and at school. Luckily, only a few dozen people a week visit this blog, so the word will not get out as quickly as it might elsewhere. Anyway, if you’ve never heard of Hulu.com don’t feel bad. I consider myself a little more than an internet novice, and I hadn’t heard of this one until the article by Frank Rose discussing how Hulu was born through a deal between FOX and NBC (strange bedfellows indeed).

It seems that the old media giants who fought against the age of clandestine file sharing that began in a college dorm with Napster, fought against copycats like Kazaa and Limewire, and are still fighting against the explosion of YouTube, have come around to realizing that media is a digital genie … once it’s out the bottle, it’s almost impossible to contain (and therefore, difficult to collect royalties). So Hulu represents the beginning of another stage of online media. And yes it’s FREE.

So what will you find at Hulu.com? Think of it as YouTube with better quality videos and commercial interruptions. Or think of it as television on the internet. And not just old shows like they used to have on AOL.TV (Sorry AOL) when it first started – but current hot shows like Heroes, 30 Rock, the Office and Saturday Night Live. For someone like me, who doesn’t watch any primetime programming on the old networks any longer, this was a great find. I don’t have a DVR, TiVo or satellite television, but with a wireless broadband connection to the internet and Hulu, I can now see what everyone else seems to be talking about (when I care).

Unfortunately, you’ll have to endure the ubiquity of bad programming (you know I’m talking about you, Family Guy), but you can also find gems such as full length feature films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Inherit the Wind, Of Mice and Men, and the documentaries Split: A Divided America and Hoop Dreams.

Thank you for stopping by and keep your Hulu viewing at home. See you all on Monday.

Viacom wants the data to prove that infringing material is more popular than user-created videos, which could be used to increase Google's liability if it is found guilty of contributory infringement.

Viacom filed suit against Google in March 2007, seeking more than $1 billion in damages for allowing users to upload clips of Viacom's copyright material. Google argues that the law provides a safe harbor for online services so long as they comply with copyright takedown requests.

Although Google argued that turning over the data would invade its users' privacy, the judge's ruling (.pdf) described that argument as "speculative" and ordered Google to turn over the logs on a set of four tera-byte hard drives.

The judge also turned Google's own defense of its data retention policies -- that IP addresses of computers aren't personally revealing in and of themselves, against it to justify the log dump.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has already reacted, calling the order a violation of the Video Privacy Protection act that "threatens to expose deeply private information."

The order also requires Google to turn over copies of all videos that it has taken down for any reason.

Viacom also requested YouTube's source code, the code for identifying repeat copyright infringement uploads, copies of all videos marked private, and Google's advertising database schema.

Those requests were denied in whole, except that Google will have to turn over data about how often each private video has been watched and by how many persons.

If you have never read Wired, I suggest you buy a copy sometime. It is the best source of general information that I have found in all the print media I have read, its kind of like a Readers Digest for a new millenium. For example, a few months ago they had a story about an US mother who posed as a terrorist on the internet and had brought quite a few American terrorists to the police.

This month they had a fantastic article about Neal Stephenson and his new book, Anathem (I wonder why he dropped the extra a...). If you've never read any of Neal Stephenson's books, then you really need to stay in more. Stephenson is an excellent Science Fiction writer, whos worlds span from Near Future dystopia's like the world behind Demolition Man to philosophical escapades in the Baroque period. Apparently his new book is going to be centered around a interstellar society which is split between hyper-indulgent cosnumerists(Which in fact seems to be bordering on hedonism), and the Avaunt, a group of intellectuals who live monasterial lives cloistered in their own cities for huge amounts of times (Think years, decades, centuries and even millenia).

Interesting stuff, I'll report back when I eventually buy the book (And yes, I did scavenge most of this information from Wired; I didn't want to check Wikipedia because it usually has a very poor synopsis) :)

I don't know how familiar you are with Chris Anderson and the Long Tail, but he was the editor of Wired Magazine when he published an article on the Long Tail. That spawned a massive blog / discussion where, in a similar spirit to open source software, people contributed to the evolution of the idea. In due course (if I recall correctly about 12 months) Anderson wrote an instant best-seller book and went on a global speaking tour!

A tangential idea I have seen in the music industry, but also in various other uses, is the concept of crowd funding. In principle, you enlist the support of crowds/fans/advocates/customers etc to help you fund the project. In return they get special priveleges such as a signed first edition, editorial input, exclusive information etc (whatever is appropriate for the project).

The first step with both of these ideas is to capture the imagination....

For the last few weeks Wired magazine editor and writer Jason Tanz has been previewing the magazine's upcoming Charlie Kaufman profile on their Storyboard blog. Basically, in true meta-Kaufman style, Tanz has made the entire writing process (or most of it, at least) transparent to the reader, showing us what goes into an article like this from initial conception, editorial emails, contacts with Kaufman's publicist, the full audio interview with Kaufman himself, and all the rest. Tanz got a hold of me via email a few weeks ago and interviewed me as well... though it doesn't look like I made the final cut. Perhaps there will be more about Kaufman and his directorial debut in the actual hardcopy issue of Wired when it hits the stands in a few weeks. Or not.

Meanwhile, here's the official trailer to Kaufman's new film Synecdoche, New York which opens in the US on October 24:

VP contender Sarah Palin hacked

The internet activist group 'anonymous', famed for its exposure of unethical behavior by the Scientology cult, has now gone after the Alaskan govenor and republican Vice-Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

At around midnight last night some members affiliated with the group gained access to governor Palin's email account "gov.palin@yahoo.com" and handed over the contents to the government sunshine site Wikileaks.org.

One of the family photos from the account

Governor Palin has come under media criticism in the past week for using private email accounts to avoid Alaskan freedom of information laws. The contents of the mailbox show this to be true and also hold clues of at least one other Yahoo based mail account held by Palin, "gov.sarah@yahoo.com".

The zip archive made available by Wikileaks contains screen shots of Palin's inbox, two example emails, address book and a couple of family photos. The list of correspondence, together with the account name tends to re-enforce the earlier criticism of Palin's email use.

The list of emails include an exchange with Alaskan Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell about his campaign for Congress. Another screenshot shows Palin's inbox and an e-mail from Amy McCorkell, whom Palin appointed to the Governor's Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse in 2007.

The e-mail, a message of support to Palin, tells her not to let negative press get to her and asks Palin to pray for McCorkell, who writes that "I need strength to 1. keep employment, 2. not have to choose."

According to Kim Zetter of Wired Magazine, McCorkell confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin.

Subsequently tests by Wikileaks reveal that both Palin's "gov.palin@yahoo.com" and her unrelated "gov.sarah@yahoo.com" account have now been deleted, almost certainly by Palin herself.

According to the Guardian, who has looked at the Wikileaks data, among the emails in Palin's account were several from addresses belonging to her aides, including a draft letter to California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a discussion of nominations to the state court of appeals, and several bearing "DPS", the acronym for the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

DPS supervises the Alaska state troopers. Could the e-mails in question be relevant to the brewing ethics storm over Palin's push to sack her former brother-in-law from the force?

The contact list included also holds accounts for other official representative's private email accounts, including those of Alaska's Kris Perry and Sharon Leighow.

The headline of this article is by all accounts a pretty bad reference to the film Adaptation, but if you get it...well, you're cool as hell. Don't look to me to explain it. Instead, I'm going to point you towards 2.5 hours of Kaufman related audio. That piece of sweetness is HERE. It seems that Wired did an interview with Kaufman about his next film Synecdoche, New York (Synecdoche, by the way, is not Schenectady, but rather an obscure term about the whole of something being used to refer to a piece of that thing or vice-versa).

Anyway, the interview is chopped up into 5 sections for easy digestion. Enjoy.

The DJ Girl Talk has been recently profiled by the New York Times for pending lawsuits regarding his most recent album "Feed the Animals," which consists of songs using short clips from various songs (mostly in the hip hop/pop/rock catalogs). It's rather curious since the "sampling wars" happened in the late 1980s, but they are not revisited with Girl Talk's music for reasons seemingly different than the immense litigation wrought by old bands like the Turtles who were suing for copyright violation. Now this is all old news so I won't go into it but I did spot something pretty cool from Wired Magazine's website. It is a visual rendering of the various samples used in a single Girl Talk song. Pretty dope.

What I find to be interesting is not so much Girl Talk's recent new found legislative popularity but the image above. It is quite a radical difference looking at something like that as opposed to standard music notation aka sheet music. Now one major difference between sheet music and Wired's transposition of Girl Talk's "What's It's All About" is how you read it. Though "What It's All About," like most music is composed in a linear fashion, in linear time, Wired chose to render it in a circle of layers.

Not only is it quite brillian but I think also indicative of the state of musical visualiziation. What happens when music itself in all of its complexity--from how it is conceived of, composed, produced, reproduced, and thus distributed--changes radically through new technologies? I think, as this Wired image suggests, music's visual representation must be upturned as well. I would venture to guess that this has somewhat always been the case in the history of the visual representation of music. Technologies have always codetermined how that process works. Sheet music, for example, is a piano-centric musical language since the piano (a percusso-melodic technology) was seen as the privileged compositional instrument during the classical era in Europe. In other words, if you were a composer, you composed on piano. And of course, there are several reasons for this, the most important being that the piano is polyphonic, meaning you can play more than one tone at a time. It's difficult to do that on a cello or saxophone for example(though it's not impossible. Listen to Coltrane if you want some evidence of this--it's called playing "overtones"). The instrument (a technology that has congealed into a singular culturally and historically specified function) has always determined the regime of the visual representation of music.

The question today and the future is:what is the "instrument" of digital music? In Girl Talk's case, it's the laptop, which defies the defintition of "instrument" that I gave just above. It is, in effect, a meta-instrument--an instrument that can be any other instrument. Does this mean our children will not have to suffer the cruel torture of quarter-notes and half-notes? Yes, but it is to be replaced with the just as complicated language of 0s and 1s.

Wired Magazine catches up with the "blogs-to-riches" super-snarky celebrity blogger.

Then he had what his idol, Ms. Winfrey, would call his a-ha moment: He realized that it was easier to be a famous blogger than a famous actor—all you needed was an oversize persona to stand out from the keystroking horde. In September 2004, he set up a free site using Blogger, chose a bland beige template, and began tapping out his musings. Over the course of a year, they evolved into what is now the hot-pink PerezHilton.com. (The site's original name, PageSixSixSix.com, had to be changed after the New York Post, home to the "Page Six" gossip column, filed a lawsuit.)

Snarky celebrity-focused news sites were nothing new, but Hilton delivered his as childlike graffiti scrawled over photos. Even in Hollywood, his vicious, eye-clawing approach stood out. (Two of the site's more benign entries: "L. Ron wuz here," scribbled over a shot of Tom Cruise, and the word "Fake" branded on the breasts of actress and reality show regular Brigitte Nielsen.) He also became known for having the juiciest pictures, most of them pilfered from other sites. The result was a lot of traffic and a few lawsuits from photo agencies. "Perez is the outsider—the gay, the Latino, the interloper," he says of his persona. "And Hilton is the mainstream—Hollywood, pop culture. So I'm this outsider commenting on this wacky world of celebrity who managed to become an insider but is still, in many ways, the ultimate outsider."

The September 2008 issue of Wired Magazine features a small interview with the famed French designer, Philippe Starck. The interview focuses on Starck's latest creation, the Mr. Impossible plastic chair.

Originally, Starck said it simply couldn't be made. The challenge was the weld. Polycarbonate chairs are typically formed using a single mold, but Starck's translucent design required two: one for the legs, one for the seat. Fusing the parts using existing methods would mean an unsightly seam, so the engineers at Italian furniture maker Kartell had to forge a new technique. The key was a very big laser. Trained at specially formulated polycarbonate, it left a seam smooth enough to create the illusion Starck had imagined: a chair that appears to levitate.

This got me thinking. How many times have you sat down with someone in the digital and design space -- a producer, designer, account manager, technologist -- who tells you something can't be done. Or said another way, 'it's impossible.' And yet, somehow your work is produced with the same flare, fashion and magnificence it was conceived with. It simply required foresight, vision, fortitude and a touch of diplomacy.

Many of the agencies doing the best work in our business -- firms like Big Spaceship, Campfire, Deep Focus, First Born, North Kingdom, Projector, Inc., Schematic, The Barbarian Group, and a host of others you may not have heard of yet -- are daring to dream and getting their clients to dream with them. In the process, they're taking us all on a wonderful ride to a place called, Imagine.

So what's their secret? I'm sure they have quite a few, but you can bet one of them is never muttering the word, impossible.

Szostak's protocells are built from fatty molecules that can trap bits of nucleic acids that contain the source code for replication. Combined with a process that harnesses external energy from the sun or chemical reactions, they could form a self-replicating, evolving system that satisfies the conditions of life, but isn't anything like life on earth now, but might represent life as it began or could exist elsewhere in the universe.

I read with great interest the cover article “Driven” by Daniel Roth in Wired Magazine (16.09 Sept. 08, page 118). The cover says: The Future of the Electric Car” and that seems just about right. In the worldwide future, design is more than just coming up with a product or service. Design must consider the entire scope, enterprise and life cycle of a designed solution. A designer of a product or service must consider the entire enterprise, or how it connects with the entire infrastructure of society. Consider how the world has changed since Edison invented the light bulb: even improving on the original design (for example: compact fluorescents) brings about a whole new set of problems (questions about the actual lifespan, the use of dangerous chemicals, disposal, environmental costs of manufacturing vs. incandescence, the list goes on. (My quote from teaching design: Design is what you do when you don’t know the answer…or the question).

The electric car is a case in point. Zero emissions are a noble goal, but how much will that car cost the consumer, or the environment? What chemicals will have to dealt with in manufacture; or in disposal? What do you do when your battery quits taking a charge? How much will a replacement cost? How much will it cost to build the infrastructure to support electric cars? I really would like to know the answers to these questions, especially from GM, who has been advertising its ephemeral Chevrolet Volt for some time already as if it already exists.

Shai Agassi, a young entrepreneur, has come up with an idea for building a sustainable (key word!) business (Better Place): an electric network that will support a new age of smart electric cars. Agassi’s idea is that you essentially lease the car and battery, and pay for its use through metered electricity. (Like the free cell phone paid for by usage or, going way back to that prime example of Chris Anderson’s Zero Economy, the King Gillette’s disposable shaving blade). The benefits are that you don’t have to buy an expensive car or more importantly, an expensive battery that will need replacing after so many charges. The car is provided to you, you pay for it by paying for the consumable portion: the electricity. The company develops the charging stations and the retailing infrastructure. If you need a fresh battery for a long trip, you just go to the charging station where they swap in a new battery in 10 minutes. You don’t need to worry about the cost of ownership and replacing worn out batteries. You pay for what you use, which is the way everything should be.

The idea is there, and Roth’s story outlines the process Agassi has been going through in finding a place to do trials, and a manufacturer to produce the vehicles and stations. A single car has yet to be produced. Brought to my mind our own (Canada) home grown electric car that is sold through out the world by the Toronto based Zenn Electric Company. Seems to me Agassi, you have a solution…Zenn already has the cars, and better yet the world wide license to develop electric vehicles using EEStor’s innovative high capacity battery system (three times the storage capacity of lithium ion). And, Transport Canada has finally allowed (just barely...they do need a kick in the ass) the use of these cars here in Canada.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="470" caption="The Zenn: Zero Emissions No Noise"][/caption]

Agassi…meet Zenn. Is this the solution we have been waiting for?

this weekend in portland oregon...

i wont be able to say that again after this weekend. we are headlining the second annual juice jam and im pretty stoked about it all in general. if you are in the area you should drop by and check us out... ITS FREE!!

in other news i just havent been on my blog at all and thats just not right. i mean ive been doing very blogworthy shit but its just like i dunno. its alot easier for me to blog when im in my apt in nyc. but being in oakland and san franciso, hell on the road in general doesnt make me feel like sitting down to type.

so that poses the question of what the hell have i been doing? well... let me tell you...

so EARLY in the tour i dont remember who but somebody in the souls camp mentioned that they had completed an album with prince paul a while back and were gonna be getting a copy of it in new york. fast forward to the nyc show and when i saw prince paul leaving the venue i knew the eagle had landed.

so last night we went to opio's myspace show to catch up with the homies and after WEEKS of begging a plus to let us hear a few tracks off of the rumored album we finally convinced im to play us a few tracks. we went to pick him up and on the ride over to the DNA room we got to hear a few tracks and man o fucking man... shit sounds like its gonna be kinda amazing.

later that night i ended up at PST thanks to the homie sake 1 and bumped into trackademics and mike baker (honor roll was in the BUILDING) then proceeded to dance until the lights came on. it was cool but those gin and tonics kinda hurt your head the next day :/ (how do i always end up drinking? ... touring is bad for resolve)

prior to that we spent the ENTIRE day running around with our publicist doing press. wired magazine, EQ magazine, imeem and xlr8r to be exact. but thats the reason i havent been blogging... most days my days are just kinda work and while it may sound kinda cool its just another day and i cant remember any of the random shit i see so i end up not bloggin about it.

today is just gonna be mainly spent getting the set ready for this weekend... and i may try to make a beat today but i will DEFINITELY memorize my major chords :)

By embracing small, lightweight cars with hyper-efficient engines, alternative fuels and hybrids we can cut our fuel consumption 30 to 50 percent by 2035, say researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Improvements in vehicle design and engine efficiency, hybrid technology and the inevitable electrification of automobiles will go a long way toward slaking our thirst for gas, they say, but the biggest benefit will come when people realize they don't need the fastest car or biggest truck on the block to slog through our daily commutes or run to the store for a quart of milk.

In this month's Wired Magazine, there is an awesome article about a man named Leland Chee. Leland is the "continuity database administrator for the Lucas Licensing arm of Lucasfilm". Basically, he "spends three-quarters of his typical workday consulting or updating the Holocron. He also approves packaging designs, scans novels for errors, and creates Talmudic charts and documents addressing such issues as which Jedi were still alive during the Clone Wars and how long it takes a spaceship to get from Dagobah, where Yoda trained Luke Skywalker, to Luke's homeworld of Tatooine."

Star Wars is my favorite movie series of all time, so this guy's job sounds awesome to me. This is just a fantastic article that I feel like sharing.

I came across a statistic in Wired Magazine that says 77 percent of women would prefer a new plasma TV to a diamond necklace. Amen sister! I totally agree.

The article reported that according the Girls Gone Wired survey of 1,400 women and 700 men aged 15 to 49, conducted by market researcher TRU, when given the choice, women opt for tech items rather than luxury items like jewelry or vacations.

More interesting facts from the study further prove that women love their gadgets as much as men:

• 56 percent would opt for a new plasma TV over a weekend vacation in Florida
• 86 percent would prefer a new digital video camera to a pair of designer shoes
• Over the next five years women see themselves increasing their activities in six tech areas: digital cameras, cell phones, e-mail, camera phones, text messaging and instant messaging
• Women on average own 6.6 technology devices while men own 6.9
• Four out of every five women are comfortable using technology
• 46 percent of women do their own computer trouble-shooting

Since women are running neck and neck with men on technology ownership and savvy, it would be wise for tech product marketers to increase their focus on this growing target audience.
